This is probably the worst experience I have had with a PC component supplier in my 20 years building computers.Supposedly WD's flagship sku at the time of purchase last year, backed by a fancy 5 year warranty (which is terrible, read on) the 1TB Caviar Black died within a year of purchase despite light use (94% unused). I don't know about you but when one pays through the nose for a top end product, you expect it to last a little longer than this did. Btw, here's my rig: Corsair PS, 6GB Corsair tri-channel DDR3, i7 920/intel dx58so, Antec Solo case, Dual crossfire ATI 4870s. Bad **s, right? (I work in the industry, for a CPU chipmaker - not Amd!).It gets worse. I filed the RMA online with Western Digital, where one has to wait 7 days for pickup (can u believe!), and guess what, I am still waiting 30 days later for the pickup and still no word from WD. The moron at the call center asked me to wait till the RMA expires (after 30 days) and open a new one, wait another 7 days wait for pickup and further 3 weeks for the RMA process to complete, totaling my PC down time to 60 days! (Btw, the customer service manager refused to take my call when I asked for the matter to be escalated.)Can't believe these idiots stay in business. In summary, the Black's decent product performance was overshadowed by awful reliability, and even worse customer service. Never again will I buy or endorse WD. Save your time and buy Seagate or an Intel SSD. I will.

2TB capacity, large cache, high performance, for under $200...actually almost $150 these days? Hard to believe.I gave it a try and bought 2 of them. They seemed good for 2-3 months, then I started to get SMART monitoring errors...hrm, ok well, they were in a s/w raid1 array and western digital claims the drives should not be placed in any raid configuration.OK - reconfigure the drives to run as single units and follow best practices/etc. Drive 1 dies a few weeks later. WD replaces it easily with a newer version w/ a much higher serial number (the original was very low so I might have gotten some of the first production batches). That drive is now running fine, w/o any real issues, although the SMART load_cycle_count has been increasing faster than it should which could be fixed for most controllers, but not w/ the 3ware JBOD controller I'm using. Hrm...well, it might fail a few years down the line and I'll deal with it then. WD does have a 5yr warranty.Drive 2 fails about 6 months after purchase. Monitoring picks up huge numbers of offline uncorrectable errors. This drive also had a very low serial number so it could have been suffering initial production problems. RMA'd easily. However, WDC sent out a "recertified" drive with a modestly low serial number and this drive is reporting errors within days of install.I have 5 of the WDC enterprise RE4 drives installed for ~6months w/o any issues (smart reports show wonderful health) and the only drives I've had issues with are the caviar blacks which are tending towards 150% failure rate... I'm going to try upgrading the SATA cable of the current problematic drive.Going forward, for WDC SATA, I'll only be buying the RE4's. No more caviar black.

Nothing I can say against this drive, ~$100 for 1TB and a caviar black at that.I have this on an ASUS Server board's Marvell RAID controller in a RAID 1 with another (identical drive) I had purchased previously from Newegg. Been great so far as my main data archive.-----------UPDATE----------------I've now used this drive in several different configurations since June 2009 when I originally wrote this review, and I'd like to supplement what I previously wrote. I'll probably be duplicating a lot of what other have written, but so what - my unique experience might help you with your situation (contact me with questions if you wish)First, general notes:This drive is fast, cool, and quiet. The only time I ever hear it is when it spools up from being asleep, and when its crunching on a particularly large file (or large series of files). Usually, my velociraptor (or NAS) drowns it out.Next, Pros and Cons:Pros:32 MB Cache, w/ Dual CPU - minimal use of my xeons to run this drivePrice per TB - falling every day5 Year Warranty - I can see this drive still working in 5 yearshigher density platter design - improves seek timeCons:Spool Up Time from power save - if I wanted a power saver I'd have bought a caviar GreenRAID - does not work well in RAID arrays (WD trying to sell more expensive RE versions)Bottom Line:So long as you know that you're getting a bulk drive (no cables or OEM packaging) and don't intend to try and do RAID arrays without working firmware magic, then this is an outstanding drive. The performance, reliability, and warranty make it a no-brainer purchase. If you want to do RAIDs, look at the samsung spinpoint raid drives or the deskstars (or spend the money to get the RE drives). If you want a power saver, go for a Caviar GreenIf you want more speed, then you're looking at setting up a RAID0, using a WD velociraptor, or using SSDsIf you think that your planned useage fits with the functionality of this drive, then go for it! You won't regret it!-------------------Configs and Notes------------------Workstation:ASUS DSEB-DG Server BoardDual Intel Xeon 52XX Dual Core CPUs (not a production chip)8 GB FBDIMM ECC Memory (DDR2 800)WD Velociraptor 300 GB 10,000 RPM SATA2PNY GTX 265Creative X-Fi Sound CardCorsair 1000W Power SupplyThermaltake Armor CaseUses of Drive:Configuration 1 - Software RAID1 on Marvell Raid controller on ASUS DSEB-DG mainboardConfiguration 2 - Hardware RAID1 on Synology DS 209 NASConfiguration 3 - Data drive on my main workstation (I sold its older brother)Config 1 notes - I discarded this usage because I was worried about my ability to rebuild the RAID array if a drive failed (or my motherboard). I had troubles building the array with the Marvel software, and was worried that in re-building I might lose all my data. Thus, I switched to a Synology DS 209 NASConfig 2 notes - these drives do NOT work well in a RAID1. Many have had this issue. Unfortunately I purchased mine AFTER WD changed the firmware to not allow RAID in their non-RE3 drives. Now, I've heard of a colleague successfully flashing the RE3 firmware onto this drive, but I have no idea how he did it. But, I simply purchased (2) Hitachi Deskstar 2TB drives for my NAS, and sold my second caviar black to a friend to subsidize the project (see my separate review of the hitachis)Config 3 Notes - Operating by itself (internal drive) is essentially what this was designed to do, and it does it well. The only con is the spool up mentioned - although it saves power, it takes about 15 seconds, which can be annoying

I bought this Western Digital 750 GB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive for my MAC 21" Aluminum Intel. After 4-5 years of everyday use my old drive started going very WONKY on me. It wouldn't start up sometimes. It would take forever to do simple tasks, kept getting that dreaded beachball of death, etc. I did some research and realized my Drive was about to commit seppuku. I was already picturing my beautiful, trusted MAC on the curb by it's lonesome self waiting for the garbage truck! Someone said just install a new drive. I decided I wasn't going to pay somebody $100 to look at it, $300 for a new drive, another $100 to install it and wait 2 weeks for it to be done. I Youtubed it and learned how to install the drive myself and it only took a couple of hours to take out the old one and put the in the new. I also decided to up the RAM from 2 to 4 gigs and install a new internal clock battery.I figured I might as well do it since I don't want to take apart my MAC again. It works way BETTER and FASTER than the original drive that came with the machine. The drive is very quiet too. I feel like I have a new MAC for the price that I paid for the drive (free shipping too). People were complaining about the packaging of WD Drives but I think Amazon straightened that problem out with better and safer packaging. So far this Western Digital 750 GB Caviar Black works like a charm! If it lasts as long as my old one I will be very happy! Thanks Amazon, I've been buying from here for years now and I haven't had a single problem with you yet!

I bought 2 of these from amazon themselves, I have them on 2 machines and are working great. But, here is what i don't understand. i bought them from amazon for $85 a piece, and now each costs over $250. This is just a year ago and its four times the price. Looks to me people are being taken for a ride. This is bad business model. Hardware price and cost of manufacturing keeps going down due to technological improvements and delivery system. But here we see Amazon is taking people for a ride or has the products become so costly? can't figure it out.

The first FASS drive I bought from Amazon was dead on arrival in July, 2010. I contacted WD directly and they sent a replacement. Now it's Oct. 2011 and the replacement drive is about to die. I've noticed several other people say that their FASS drive died some time after the 1 year mark. WD just sent me the 2002FAEX drive instead of another FASS drive (thank goodness for the 5 year warranty). After reading some reviews it appears the drives have identical specs, but the 2002FAEX is a newer version of the FASS drive. I haven't installed the new drive yet so I can't comment on it. Based on my experiences I wouldn't recommend the FASS drive.FYI, if you don't know about Tom's Hardware please check it out. I purchased the 2 TB drive to put in my late 2007 model iMac. The original drive hadn't crashed, I just ran out of room and the original 320 GB HDD just wasn't cutting it.I ordered this from [...] because the price they were offering ([...]) was outstanding, along with free shipping and no sales tax. I find it worthy to note that less than 24 hours after I purchased this, the price dropped by $3. I contacted buy.com about this and they refunded me the $3 difference--excellent service (and ensuring repeat business, I might add). The HDD arrived four days after I ordered it, on the earliest possible day in the given shipping window. The drive was packed very securely, with plastic supports keeping the bagged drive safe in its small box; the small box was shipped in a larger box filled with polystyrene. I had no issues with poor packing, and the drive was completely fine.Following some guides online, I was able to replace the HDD in my iMac fairly painlessly; the entire process took about an hour. If I had to do it all over again, I could probably do the swap within 30 minutes or less. I used my Snow Leopard upgrade disc to format the new drive (which took about 10 seconds) and restore my computer from a Time Machine backup I made just before the operation. The backup took less than four hours to move 250 GB of data from the backup drive to the new drive, and after a restart it appears to be a flawless copy.(For those who are interested, I removed the plist from the backup file preventing the backup of certain directories so that all of the data on my computer was preserved. I keep most of the non-critical cache files cleaned out, so it only added an extra 2 GB or so to the backup size.)This drive offers substantial improvements over the previous. The speed increase is dramatic (64 MB cache vs. 8 MB) and the noise level is certainly quieter than I had expected. Although the drive is louder than the previous drive (the clicking of the drive is more pronounced), it is only really noticeable when the room is silent. It runs a bit hotter than the previous drive, but that's to be expected for the performance gain.Since I've only had this installed for a couple of hours, I can't really grade the longevity. My previous experience with WD drives has been generally good, and the previous drive was able to sustain more than two years of heavy use none the worse for wear. I can only hope this drive enjoys the same long life, but the 5 year warranty is very reassuring. As soon as things have settled down I'll be using Boot Camp to set up a new Windows partition; we'll see how that goes.

From my experience with Western Digital, I loved the way I could access my data really fast with MASSIVE 64MB data cache permitting fastest read/write cycles known, critical for data backup and retrieval.I also bought this brand and model because I am confident of the way WD drives are made and last: they work!BEST. I have had others and have problems some time after. No fuss, or hard drive platter noise here. If you have problems be sure to backup to another media (CD, DVD, Blue-ray, Net Storage, as after some time - and no testing or maintenance - some drives may fail. I can personally state I have had 5 Western Digital Hard Drives in my PCs and only two failed - because of lightning or electronic defect, over the ten years I have built or designed my PCs. Other than this...PERFECT. Call or email WD Support and within a week, they we will exchange your drive. They have very helpful techs. In Windows 7 a 2TB drive formats out to ~1.8TB (taking ~1 hour to get done).

I've only had this drive a month or so, so obviously I can't speak to long-term reliability or anything. Speed seems fine, but not awesome (really 7200PM is what most desktop drives were up until the "smartpower/intellipower" stuff came along, so this shouldn't surprise me). The 5yr warranty provides some comfort.I did encounter a problem with it already though, which is somewhat concerning, but may somehow be partly the fault of my system (a relatively new Core i7 desktop from Dell). Essentially it seems to have a problem waking up from a sleep state. I'm not sure if this has to do specifically with full-system sleep, or also selective sleep of the hardware (i.e. power down hard drives after 20 minutes of inactivity). I disabled the latter and stopped using the former and so far things are fine. But the drive would basically disappear often times after waking from full system sleep and only a full reboot would restore it. This would have affected by rating more but I'm not certain yet whether it has something to do with my system.Other than that issue it's been pretty solid, but it's a bit noisy. Certainly more so than my other drives (though not the loudest drive I've heard).Overall it's ok, and I think it accomplishes the goal for me which was to have a large amount of storage that was at least a bit faster than a "Green" drive. But I might buy a Seagate Barracuda next time...

I'm currently running 7 drives in my computer (a mix of 4 IDE's and 3 SATA's, using WD and Seagate among all of those). The latest of these is a 1TB WD Caviar Black hard drive running through a Vantec 6-port SATA II 150 PCi host card with RAID. After doing an exhaustive search of various Seagate and Western Digital drives in the 1, 1.5, and 2 TB range, I finally settled on this one because it appears to have the lowest failure rate out of most of the Caviar Green, Caviar Blue, and Seagate models I looked around at. I also took various reviews of the different models into account (on Amazon, TigerDirect, and NewEgg), not just technical specs.I was originally looking for one of the Seagate 1.5 TB drives, but after reading about the bricking issues with different models (Barracuda 7200.11, ES.2 SATA and DiamondMax 22 drives) which I believe has now been remedied with firmware fixes by Seagate last year?), as well as reading about a high number of failure rates (and thereby low ratings and quite low prices - I assume because of the high failure rates) for the 1.5 TB drives on TigerDirect, NewEgg, and Amazon, I finally decided to dig around for any kind of a more reliable drive. The 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black is certainly less in storage than 1.5 TB obviously, but the stability is what I needed with my work (audio mixing, graphics, and computer programming). I needed something that would hold up. And, when I saw the 5 year warranty, plus 399 reviews with 4.5 out of 5 stars here on Amazon, 4.5 out of 5 on TigerDirect (28 reviews), and 4 out 5 on NewEgg (2490 reviews!), that pretty well helped me make up my mind with this getting this drive. I've now had it over a month and it's doing good. Still wishing I could've gotten a 1.5 TB drive, but with the amount of problems I kept reading about with the Seagate drives right now (Seagate usually being my choice), I finally had to go with this one. I'm just not willing to trust the 1.5 TB's of *any* manufacturer right now for that matter. Info on this one is WD1001FALS, 1 TB, 3.0 SATA, Caviar Black, Western Digital.I also noticed that Western Digital has released a 6.0 SATA version of this drive, but I haven't read any reviews on it yet.

I've bought this drive (640G) in 2009 as an exchange for seagate 500G which originally came with mydell desktop(Seagate becomes somewhat noisy and I also wanted a little bigger capacity.denote, that despite the noise, Seagate worked fine for 3.5 years and I never had any data loss/correctness problem with it).It turned out it was a BIG mistake ( I should have bought another Seagate).WDC, which I bought, worked OK for 1 year then I couldn't boot from it.Since it was under warranty, I called WD and they send me a replacement drive.Luckily I was able to connect a bad drive as a slave and salvage all the important data.Today, the replacement drive (which I have had for less then a year developed the problems: "Timeout waiting for IRQ" per Dell Diagnostic Suite.I called WD again and they are sending me second replacement.Representative told me they sending "re-certified" drives to replace bad ones under warrantyHe assured me "re-certified" are as good as new.I am EXTREMELY disappointed in this drive quality - 2 replacements in 2.5 year, each time I need to spent hours on diagnostics, salvaging data, reinstalling OSs etc.(I understand one can get wrong but two in the row !). I am consider myself very luckythat in both cases I can connect bad drives as slave and at least access them to get the data out.I'll never buy their product again.P.S. I need to mention that their customer service is good, no waiting on the phone, replacementsare send quickly ( they need credit card if you want advanced replacement - getting a new drivebefore sending them back an old one, while cc is not actually charged, this amount is sort "withheld" from your balance). But id doesn't cover for such quality problems with the drive itself.

I bought one of these new in early 2009. A few weeks ago, just before Memorial Day, the drive died. The drive will not spin up and even keeps the computer from booting if it's plugged in (it was configured as the D: drive). After searching on the web, I found several posts of people who have had the exact same problem. Seems that the board mounted outside the drive gets too hot and self destructs. WD does warranty the drive - but you still lose whatever data you didn't have backed up. For me that meant reinstalling every program I had, plus over a week of restore (thank god for Carbonite!). Even with this problem, I would have given the drive a better rating if WD made replacement boards available for these drives, or offered to repair the drive for users. But they don't. This also explains why you see so many vendors carrying refurbished drives for this model.

Another word on the way AMAZON ships these drives...I am guessing that these little boxes they come in are the way AMAZON gets the OEM's from WD, probably giant pallets of them. Then the AMAZON people see brown boxes that look like they are ready to ship, so they send them out just like that. If you look at the boxes, there are stickers on them that will have you think these are just little boxes that Western Digital ship mass amounts of OEM drives in.NO WAY these boxes are ment to be stacked in a warehouse and shipped like that from these boxes, not with the minimal amount of bubble wrap they stick in there. THOSE 1 or 2 LARGE SIZE PLASTIC BUBBLES inside the box will be flat by the time it gets to you, and I'm telling you guys, if you think UPS or whoever is being used as shipper on these drives is being careful, your fooling yourself!...LOL!!!Call Western Digital yourself and ask them how high of a fall they build these drives to take, or the G-FORCE they are expected to withstand :) I sent 2 of these back to amazon because of this "SHIPPING PROBLEM", and went to NEWEGG insted, at least they understand that it's not ROCKET SCIENCE. I called and BEGGED AMAZON numerous times to get word to someone that these things are DELICATE, and please, if your going to leave them in those little boxes that AMAZON gets them in from Western Digital, at the very least PLEASE PUT THAT BOX INSIDE ANOTHER PROPERLY PACKAGED BOX FOR SHIPPING. All my calls and all my begging went unherd, and NO ONE AT AMAZON would get word to the shipping depts. of the various hubs they have, that you cant have a hard drive banging around in a box like that when UPS or is throwing these things around the way they do.I dont know about the rest of you folks, but let me tell you how I know when I get something at the front door from UPS....Take a book and throw it on the floor next to you, thats what I hear when UPS drops something off to me...lol! So, is it a surprise that you might get a DOA right out of the box?...NOPE!!! Should you be surprised if your drive works fine FOR A WHILE, then takes a dump? Shouldn't be surprised at all, not with the way AMAZON is shipping these and other hard drives.Look at it this way folks, if this were not an OEM, and it was inside a nice pretty colored box with print all over it, AMAZON would take that box and pack it inside another larger box, but since they are getting these drives already inside a small plain brown box, they pull them, slap a shipping label on it and off it goes to UPS's soccar feild...lolI love AMAZON most of the time, but this issue is really frustrating to me. If you don't want to take my word for it, then please call Western DIgital as I said. GO TO NEWEGG and buy your OEM drives from them, at least they wrap the darn things in 5 or so layers of PROPER BUBBLE WRAP. Otherwise, if you buy your new drive as an OEM from AMAZON, when it dies....DON'T SAY SOMEONE DIDN'T WARN YA :)

Its not often that I take the time to write a review on a product, but I had to do it for this drive. I have been in the IT field for over 20 years and though I have seen it all.I purchased 3 of the 2TB Black drives in the last month. One here on Amazon and the rest, somewhere else. Out of the 3, 1 was DOA, 2nd died in 3 hours and the last, had so many bad sectors that WD's own software ran for 13 hours and it finally gave up and errored out. This is completely unacceptable in this day and age. How can they be releasing 3TB drives when they have huge issues with the 2TB offerings. It almost seems like they are having problems with the latest batch reading through some review on other sites. I also purchased a couple of the 640GB drives and these Im extremely happy with. Even the 2TB Green drives have been good to me. Out of the 8 that I purchased this year, only one had to be replaced, which I consider acceptable.Thankfully, WD's RMA process is painless, but there is a catch. When you receive your replacement drive, it only comes with a 90-Day Warranty. WD, can explain this to me. How can you reduce the warranty on this drive from 5 years to 90 days when its your QC issues that are causing this high of a failure rate that makes the IBM Deathstar look good.If you are looking for 2TB drives that will not be used in a RAID environment, check out the 2TB Green drives, or even Hitachi.

Bought this drive April 20, '09. I first installed it in an upgraded Mac G4. Since the older G4 Macs used ATA-100 IDE drives, it required installation of a SATA card in one of the PCI slots, which was a Seritek 1S2. This allowed me to exceed the 128 GB size limit due to the G4's design and address the full capacity of this drive (larger IDE drives can be used in old Macs, but the extra capacity is not recognized). The combination of this drive and the SATA card was great and well worth it. Never a problem. The drive proved to be faster, and nearly totally silent. A couple of months back I pulled the drive from the G4 and moved it to a late model dual processor G5 PowerPC, with native SATA support on the bus. I had to do nothing except boot the machine, and I was in business. The drive has proven to be totally compatible, and continues to run quietly and fast. A great value for the price. I've seen other reviews here mentioning packaging: this is a valid complaint. Hard drives need to be handled carefully and packaged well. I'm thinking a lot of failures might be traced back to inadequate packaging and rough handling. Manufacturers are very specific about this. Foam (as described in their packaging instructions), not peanuts or air bags, or other approved shipping containers, must be used to maintain the warranty when shipping the drive.

So far I have used many hard drives from many manufactures including Seagate, Hitachi, WD, Samsung. When I first ordered my Gateway FX6801, it came with 1TB Hitachi hard drive. Although it had 700RPM speed, the disk access was slow, noisy and the booting time it used to take was more compared to Caviar Black hard drive that I am currently using. Post booting, I can now immediately access the Windows 7 desktop after Hitachi hard drive was replaced with WD Caviar Black. Otherwise, I had to wait for a minute at least.I wanted to tell this that after I did the above change, my PC is now fast enough to run CS4, Maya, Sonar8.5, Reason4, MS Office, Sony Vegas9.0 without any issues. No hang ups, no waiting nothing. I am very impressed with these hard drives performance. Last week when I had to order the hard drives for my new Synology DS410 NAS, I ordered two of these drives without even thinking any other drives. These are pricey but worth every penny that we pay. I stream blue ray quality movies (tried Grown Ups) over the network on my Vizio HD TV, Wow!!! I love the performance. If you want reliable, fast and quietest hard drive, go for these without any hesitation. You will never regret. Five stars *****

This hard drive came basically loose in a box and was rattling around. Upon opening the box I found another box. Inside the second box was a hard drive that was basically loose. The second box was constructed in a way that, if it had been made of quality materials may have held the hard drive securely. But because of the cheapness of the construction, it had completely failed (tiny cardboard tabs were supposed to be in tiny slots but weren't) thereby releasing the hard drive so that it could bounce freely around in every direction with every drop or bang.I will *not* consign 2 terabytes of data to a drive that has been shipped improperly and outside of Western Digital's shipping specifications. Hard drives consist of moving parts that must operate at high speeds for years with only microns of tolerance. The *last* thing a hard drive needs is to be banged about for days in a poorly packaged box. I will never buy a hard drive from Amazon again unless it is a retail drive that has been packed securely by the manufacturer.I have no choice but to return the drive in the same crumby box it came in. This means that Amazon, after they receive it, will then ship this drive which has traveled in two directions back to some customer (possibly you) for whom it will probably fail. There is a retailer (with two zs and an f in its name)that ships hard drives properly in a secure foam insert which surrounds the drive on all six sides. They are a little more expensive than Amazon, but at least if there is a problem with the drive..it won't be because of negligent shipping practices.BTW, almost *all* of the large online retailers participate in this folly. Anytime you read reviews of a drive and see lots of DOAs *and* complaints about the packaging you can put two and two together.Oh....also.....I have one of these drives I ordered from the retailer who ships them properly and it is a great drive!

I needed a new gaming drive, my last one (WD Caviar Blue) was full to bursting. This is now the fastest hard drive in my build. Loading screens are as short as they've ever been. I can't say how fast it loads normal applications though since I'm using this as a gaming-drive only. As any quick glance at the description will reveal, the drive has a 32MB cache and dual processors, these coupled with the disk spinning at 7200RPM makes this little puppy blazing fast. I'd say easily one of the best hard drives for the price. I can't say how loud the drive is since my case fans drown out all other noise from the case (and my room >.>) but I can definitely say there's been no clicking. This is a bare drive, so take note. You'll need to have a SATA power, which your PSU probably already has, and a SATA data cable, which can be had for a couple bucks right here on Amazon. The first one I received was DOA, I know very sad. Filled out an RMA and Western Digital sent me a new one right away. It was a tight fit what with my terrible wiring skills and love of over-sized video cards.I've been running this for a month now and have been loving it ever since. If you need plenty of storage at blazing fast speeds, get you one!

The WD1001FALS 1TB drive was just what I needed for my Non Linear Edit system. I needed to expand the drives for captures and this filled the bill. It arrived well packed - shrink wrapped to a folded piece of cardboard suspended inside the carton. Good packing and mostly "green" too! It installed easily and was recognized by WinXp Pro. I formatted and began using. It has been several weeks now and no problems. I have always liked WD and I had a good experience again.

In today's crazy epidemic of failing hard-drives I can tell you that for now I'm sticking to Western Digital in terms of reliability. All of my three seagate drives, that went DOA in 2 months due to manufacturer's firmware and physical error, were meant to be a competition to this drive. Well almost $300 dollars wiser I bought Western Digital and I have three of these puppies (2 in raid 1) and so far so good....knock on wood.

This is a Great HDD.Pros:>Nice looking>Very Fast>Easy to install (well depends on your case)>good packaging> Installed Win 7 in less than 15 min.Cons>None ReallyI was skeptical on the performance of these drives. I've used Velociraptors in the past, and those perform really well but are pricey. Also compared to SSD's 10k + drives are now practically obsolete. So i made a decision and decided to go with these instead of the SSD, and I'm not disappointed. On tests (HD-Tune) these drives perform nearly as well as Velociraptors. But in real life the difference is barley noticeable. You could package these as Velociraptors and no-one would know the difference.I am very impressed with WD's Caviar Black series. Why pay doubled the amount for 1/4 of the storage on an SSD? And if you go raid 0, you will get the SSD speeds with alot of storage. Also, I would recommend after you get settled (install os, programs, transfer files, etc) that you run a disk defrag and optimizer. ( i use Auslogics DiskDefrag) It will increase the speed of your device considerably, and i would run it at least once a month to keep your drive running at optimum speeds!

Great drive! Fast! Quiet! Just plug & go! Incredible noticeable performance difference compared to original Dell stock drive.I have over several hundred thousand personal files on my computer--over and above Windows, installed software, installation backups. I have 150+ GB mp3 files, pictures, etc. One thing I want to avoid at all costs is losing a hard drive. I researched & found this to be the best on the market when I bought it. I was so pleased I bought another, then another, then.... With few exceptions, I believe Amazon has the best prices for these.Using two drives, I have a backup strategy using Acronis True Image Home 2009 and Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 in which I periodically clone one WD 1TB drive to another. I then keep them in sync using SyncToy. The time & effort is negligible. They are easily scheduled. Cloning takes only about 45 minutes, if that. I like this better than a RAID setup. The configuration is simpler and a failure will be easier to recover from--just change the SATA cable. Besides, RAID in no way prevents the spread of viruses, spyware or malware across several drives. It duplicates everything! These drives were a great choice!UPDATE: So far I have bought and installed seven of these for myself and others: 5 1TB, 1 750 GB, and 1 640 GB.Also, I bought two drives from other vendors, thinking I was getting a bargain. They arrived DOA. I personally think Amazon's packing & shipping makes a difference. They were always packed well-protected.

My switch from Seagate to Western Digital started with a WD MyBookWorld network drive that has now been running well on 5 years. Then we needed a larger disk in my son's MacBook laptop and went with a 7200rpm 320Gb WD Caviar Black. Then I needed SATA disks for my first home-built Windows-7 PC, and I read more about the reliability of WD Caviar Black and their 5-year warranty. I looked in my box of old computer parts and noticed a few dead Seagate drives, and only one dead WD drive. No matter what, you still take your chance with disk drives, but my luck with WD has been better than Seagate. So, I went with WD Caviar Black 320Gb and 1Tb drives. Then my son needed more SATA disks for a Mac Pro and his video production classes. The pricing of the 1Tb drives has been very good, so now they are being used all over the house as primaries and backups. A couple external enclosures later, and I have more 1TB drives in eSATA and Firewire enclosures, and a couple 2Tb drives replacing internal 1TB drives. (two MyBookWorld, two 320Gb, eight 1TB and two 2TB's.) I never imagined storing this much data, but a family full of music and videos and eBooks takes a lot of space and requires a lot of backup. And since speed is important, 7200rpm SATA drives are great for eSATA and Firewire. So far, so good (knock on wood). I have not needed to test WD's warranty or return policies on any of these drives.

There's not really much you can say bad about this HDD. No, it's not 2TB and it certainly isn't the best on the market, especially from Western Digital. However when you look at what you get for the price, it's really hard to pass up this drive. I've waited a month before writing a review in case I had to include anything like having to return it or anything like that. Suffice to say, it runs great and I've had zero problems with the drive so far. I've already filled it up more than half capacity at this point. It is pretty quiet too, even when performing intensive writing or reading.I've personally never owned anything but Western Digital drives, and I imagine I'll have this drive for a long time as well. There's a simple reason: reliability. Only one WD drive I've owned has ever stopped working, and it was almost 10 years old when it quit on me. You definitely get your money's worth when you go with a Western Digital drive.

I know a lot of people are having this same problem. When ordering this product through Amazon, you end up receiving the 1TB 32mb cache version instead (which is obviously $99 versus the $264 I paid for it).Like many others, I submitted the online exchange and the second delivery was another 1TB drive.I call Amazon and they guy assures me that they are looking into the issue, and that they will resolve it and send me the correct product overnight. I call back today and get a CSR that tells me I need to return the 2 drives I received and I will get a refund, but they will not be filling my order. Not only that, but I can still buy the product from one of the other vendors through Amazon's open Market.I'm an Amazon Prime Member which of course carries an annual fee, and does NOT apply to Amazon's open market. So I'm supposed to go out of my way and drop off the 2 drives I received in error to UPS so that I can get my refund of $264, then pay $294 plus tax and shipping through Amazon's open market just because they can't fullfill my order.Any other company in the world would be responsible for filling this order. I know this because I myself have lost money many times when the manufacturers I use to are back ordered or send the wrong product. It comes out of my pocket and I deal with the manufactuer myself, but MY CUSTOMER gets what they ordered always. In my opionion Amazon (I write this thinking you actually read this but well all know you don't, you don't care) you should be responsible for filling my order regardless of the loss you receive. You should be buying up stock from your open market through various other vendors and filling the orders placed THROUGH YOU from YOUR CUSTOMERS.This isn't the first time Amazon has done this to me, but it will be the last. I have cancelled my Prime Membership and will no longer be buying anything through Amazon ever again. There are plenty of other viable options out there that actually care about their customers.

Installation was simple because it fit. I used my replacement software with utility to partition the disc and then installed everything that I lost. Fortunately I have backup externals and didn't lose much. I selected double the hard drive cache than I previously was running and the performance is noticeable. Also noticeable is I can't hear the drive running as it is very quiet. That's a plus for me.

This Black drive has a huge increase in speed over the WD Blue drive it replaces. Visual Studio 2010 launches 72% faster and Expression Blend 4 launches 46% faster. The increase in cost over the blue drive was minimal ~$30 and this one comes with a five year warranty. Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB hard drive--the best I have ever used--a solid performer.

I have been waiting ages for a large capacity hard drive that runs at 7,200rpm and this Caviar black has most definitely answered my call.Lets look at the technical specs first... As Borat would say, They're very nice! (bet you didn't expect a lame Borat reference did you?)It features: Two Processors, Four 500GB platters, 64MB of cache and a dual mode actuator system that, (to make a long story short) enables precision head tracking that speeds up your seek times. Plus like most Western Digital hard drives, this one features a No-Touch loader, meaning the read and write head never comes in contact with any of the platters, increasing the life span of the hard drive. Now to benchmarks. (all testing performed on an Intel 2.4Ghz Q6600 paired with XFX 780i Sli Mobo and recorded in HDTach)First off, this thing has the fastest sustained writes and reads of any standard magnetic drive I've used. (or heard of for that matter) Mine exceeded 113MB/s each compared to my previous 1.5TB Barracuda that scored 99MB/s sustained reads and 84MB/s sustained writes. That gives the Caviar Black about 16 and 30 percent faster sustained reads and writes respectively!Random Access Reads and Writes were also faster for the Caviar Black at 7.4ms and 5ms respectively. Compared to the Barracuda's 12.9 and 5.4.Burst Read speeds for the Caviar Black were 215.1MB/s compared to the Barracuda's 209.1MB/sAlso, just for fun I compared the Caviar Black's benchmarks against my 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor. (Thinking the VelociRaptor would totally own it) I was pretty shocked at the results.Raptor sustained read/write: 99.1MB/s and 98.2MB/sCaviar sustained read/write: 113.3MB/s and 113.1MB/s (It actually beat it)Raptor random access read/write: 7.3ms and 3.3msCaviar random access read/write: 7.5ms and 4.9ms (Pretty close here)Raptor Burst read: 250.3MB/sCaviar Burst read: 215.1MB/s (O well, can't win em all ;)Not bad considering this thing is running about 27 percent slower than the Raptor. :DBottom line is, the Caviar Black 2TB is a hard drive running nearly as fast (or faster) than a VelociRaptor for about only a hundred bucks more and its six and a half times the capacity. Is it worth it to you? I think it is, the price will only drop in time to come but with this size and these speeds even at the $299msrp I don't think the Caviar Black 2TB's value can be beat at the moment.

I was on a budget and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a 1 TB hard drive. The hard drive I purchased from this company for about 50 bucks arrived in just a couple of days from the east coast. Even though it's an internal drive, I had purchased a usb adapter for 10 bucks elsewhere and wanted to use this drive as an external. The usb adapter hooked up easily and when I plugged the drive into the computer, it was recognized but since it was not formatted, it was not quite ready to use. I had to do some homework on the formatting since I hadn't formatted a hard drive in a couple of years and my repertoire of skills have evolved since the last time I did it (Fdisk the last time and Gparted [highly recommended] this time). Using Gparted, I partitioned and formatted the drive. I have a laptop and a desktop computer that are both dual boot Mandriva Linux and Windows XP. I created 4 partitions (one for each operating system) then proceeded to back up each one. Everything worked fine. I now need to decide where to store the drive until the next backup. I'm thinking of a fireproof safe or something. End of story. I didn't need customer service or anything like that but the product was as they represented it and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Nothing technical to add beyond the other excellent reviews here. The drive I received is running perfectly as the User drive in my SSD-booted Mac Pro.Main reason for adding yet another review is to comment on the packaging, since there are many reviews and photos here of badly packaged drives. This drive, as well as a pair of Caviar Greens in a separate shipment, was well packaged, primarily by Western Digital themselves. Apparently enough complaints about OEM drive packaging (and returns) have got them packing the drives the same as retail drives, other than in generic brown boxes. Each drive was in its own heavy cardboard box with plastic holders isolating it from all sides of the box. These boxes were in turn put inside an Amazon box with ample air packs.

This drive was highly recommended as the fastest drive available before going up to the 10krpm Velociraptor series, and after putting both in my system, I believe the claims are true. This drive runs quietly, where I can't even hear drive accesses like I can with other drives. That's one of the most noticeable differences between this and the Velociraptor, aside from the speed, of course. So, what is the speed difference between this Caviar Black drive and the Velociraptor? I ran HD Tune 2.55 to find out.The test system was a brand new Core i7-920 based system using an ASUS P6T-Deluxe motherboard with on-board SATA. The 300GB Velociraptor is installed as the system drive, the 640GB Caviar Black as the data drive.Caviar Black 640GB:50 MB/s min, 109.4 MB/s max, 85.8 MB/s averageAccess Time: 12.3msBurst Rate: 127 MB/sVelociraptor 300GB:74.6 MB/s min, 120 MB/s max, 100.9 MB/s averageAccess Time: 8.6msBurst Rate: 188.3 MB/sWhile the max rates are very close, you'll notice that the min rates are quite different, and the burst rate is even more so.To put these tests into perspective, I also ran HD Tune on my previous system, which is a Pentium 4 3.06GHz Windows XP box with an 80GB Seagate IDE system drive and a 500GB Seagate ST3500641AS SATA drive for data.I won't even post the 80GB's numbers because they are too pathetic and the technology it's based on is outdated, but I think a comparison to the SATA drive is apt because many people might have such a drive and may be contemplating the value of a replacement/upgrade.Seagate 7200.9 500GB:30.2 MB/s min, 61.3 MB/s max, 48.8 MB/s averageAccess Time: 14msBurst Rate: 97.3 MB/sAs you can see, the new Caviar Black drive outpaces the older Seagate by a wide margin. An almost 76% increase in average speed, coupled with 14% better access times, makes for an upgrade that is going to be noticeable in disk-instensive operations, provided the rest of the system is not a bottleneck.Bottlenecks are exactly what I didn't want in my new system. The Velociraptor came highly recommended by a local system builder that I trust, as he said that with the new systems he was building, the hard drive was fast becoming the bottleneck. Based on these tests and my usage of the new machine, I have every confidence that he was correct.I decided to go with the Velociraptor for my system drive because I wanted the fastest drive possible, especially for quick accesses. While I could have gone with a second Velociraptor for the data drive, I wanted more storage space and lower cost. While breaking in my system, I used both HD Tune's error scan function and Windows 7's thorough chkdsk routines several times. These tests took several hours to run, and I ran them directly after installation, and then after transferring about 300GB of data to the drive. No problems have been found in any of those tests.I hoped that the Caviar Black was the bang-for-the-buck alternative, and I believe that was a wise choice. The Caviar Black 640GB drive represents a great value and delivers terrific performance.

Alright - took a chance and ordered the 1TB drive. WD has a long history of making some of the better HDDs in the industry. This review will attempt to address some of the negative issues presenting by other reviewers. First - packaging: upon opening the box, the drive was in another box which was surrounded externally by three units of air bags (strips of three); the drive itself was "suspended" within the second box by the plastic end caps that basically "suspend" the drive from any contact. The source of the shipping facility was from Lexington, KY.Next, unpacked the drive and formatted to 931GB; ran Hard Disk Sentinel for a surface scan overnight and no damaged or bad sectors noted. Copied a couple large files to and from the drive with barely any noticeable increase in dB output (the drive I received is relatively a quiet drive compared to the others currently in the system; two other WDs and one Seagate). Actually - the loudest component in the case is the fan cooling the graphics card - this is an older Radeon AGP model.I am basically confident the drive will last; notwithstanding the possibility of some latent issue that may pop up within the next couple months. This is a great price for the capacity (1TB = functionally 9.5 cents/GB).Interesting - the drive just increased in price by almost $10 since I reviewed it . . . now July 22nd.

Excellent drive - the generous 64MB cache in addition to the 72K rpm and SATA connection makes this a perfect drive for my media server setup. I bought this 2TB drive as my 4th drive for all the ripped blu-ray movies I have (no compression - full quality blurays). I watch it on my 46" Sony TV via my laptop's HDMI output. I have an external dual drive bay (Thermaltake blacx duet - http://www.amazon.com/eSATA-SATA-External-3-5in-Drive/dp/B001IOPIRM) that I use with this drive. The eSATA connection to my laptop provides ample bandwidth I need to watch a mounted bluray image file's movie without a single hiccup. And the generous cache has just been the icing on the cake.Kudos to WD for the great packaging contrary to what some people grmbled about - the packaging was above and beyond what I'd expect for an OEM drive (most people don't seem to know the diff. between an OEM and retail drive and expect same packaging...however the packaging for this drive was of same quality as that of a retail drive). And kudos to Amazon for have packaged that WD box well inside their own box wrapped with bubble-pak...had only expected Amazon's packaging and not WD's own box and strong plastic drive holders inside the box.I am hoping Amazon will maintain this price on this drive till I get my next one in a few months.

A reformat fixed it, but I had to reinstall everything which set me back a decent amount of time. I have it dedicated as a drive just for photos, no applications or OS. It takes a noticeable amount of time to wake up and read what I'm looking for.I have had one weird thing after another pop up since I installed this drive. I'm close to sending it back to get something else, even if it costs me more.
