I installed this 1tb hard drive in my desktop computer with zero problems. Vista picked it up and added it to the configuration, and I formated it into 2 sections. I've had it running for many months now, and had zero problems. I've always preferred Western Digital Drives, and I'm a computer consultant who has had to deal with many different brand drives over the past 15 years.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend this drive to anyone. Hard drive arrived "bare" with no rails or screws in an anti-static bag, you will need to supply your own.Hard drive is a lot faster than Western Digital's Green drives, runs hotter, and is a lot noisier. However, the payoff for the speed is worth it. Installed it as the boot drive in a 2.80GHZ (Early 2008) Mac Pro Quad, 12GB ram, with a total of 4 internal hard drives.

I remember when a 10MB drive was huge and you used to calculate price per Meg to find the best priced model. I've used many different hard drive manufacturers but I've always favored WD drives. I've never had a failure with them. Before I bought this model, I read the reviews and Vista installation tips. Install and configuration went easily after reading the tips. Works great, quiet and no problems. My only disappointment is that it didn't come with a SATA cable but I guess that is to be expected with an OEM model.

WD makes great internal drives, very quiet and fast. I got one of their external drives and it was terrible. It usually won't even mount. I don't know what people are talking about being loud I can't even hear it in my PowerMac G5. Like others have said it must be the bay in your computer that is causing the noise. I am very pleased with it.

I'm usually the Newegg buyer. But this time, Amazon has done it again. I bought a week ago and it came in in perfect condition. Packaging was great. IMHO, it's much better than Newegg. Two separate thick foam smashed together with the Hard drive in between. Past experiences with Newegg left me with DOAs. My computer recognize the 640Gb. So it's good and a recommended buy. Will buy from Amazon again!!--Ps: I'm not hatin' on Newegg...I still buy stuff there.

Part of a new high-end build. Using drive for dual booting Mint 7 (linux) & Windows 7 RC. Very fast system with no drama. Will put boot partition on SSD when prices go down; this WD is a keeper & will get another if I see a deal.

This was a great deal. I plan to buy more of these. I love the fact that i can get this size of storage for around 100 dollars. My only complaint which is the same as others is the packaging. I know it is an OEM product. I don't need a pretty box but they could have at least put some packaging peanuts in there! When i order a book it comes more secure then this. I bet the drive bounced around quite a bit in shipping. It seems fine, but i can see a serious problem if the mail man dropped the small box it came in. I would pay the extra dollar that it would cost to put some bubble wrap in there if they offered it.

bought this hard disk it runs quite and smoothly but it's slow not fast windows 7 rating gave it 6 all my other pc components got 7.9 which is the maximum but it doesn't do justice to the other pc components it like you have a firrari car but you have to run in a heavy traffic so you won't run that fast so nice for the capacity and the price don't buy the green one it's even not as fast as this one and gets alot of disk errors..If you have any questions contact me through amazon ;)

I've been a Seagate user forever, but have been disturbed by some of the reports of failures for their large drives. Decided to switch to WD, the Caviar "Black". Disk installed easily. Performed full format, transferred a couple of hundred Gig, and have been using the disk for about 3 weeks. No problems. This is also a very fast disk -- data write tests show a write speed of 70-75 MBytes/sec, when transferring information from memory (as opposed to disk-to-disk, when bus interactions can have a larger impact). The Western Digital is a good 12-15% faster than my other disks.Sale price was very good ($90). While not the highest capacity disk, the trade-off for speed and perceived reliability seems to be worth it!

I recently received WD1001FALS Hard Drive."There was very little protection"Packaging was unacceptable.I place many orders with amazon,I neverhad this happen before. Whats up!!!!!!packaging consisted of two bladder bagswhich had deflated enroute.

I use computers for a living and buy a lot of drives. In my opinion, Western Digital currently makes the best, problem-free hard drives, from speedy VelociRaptors to green drives to black drives which are fast (but not as fast as VelociRaptors) and very well priced. This drive is excellent for the money.However, I recently bought a 1TB drive (mid July 2009) and the packaging was terrible. I was surprised that the drive still worked. See photo I am uploading.

This is the second drive. The first drive would only format half. Figured it was one of the platters inside wasn't working. However, Amazon.com came through and I did receive a new replacement in a timely fashion. The way the drives were package. I am surprised that the second drive worked, but it does. The price is unbeatable.

Amazon is shipping out this hard drive with virtually no packaging. My card board box was bent and few air penuts were punctured. I have been a long time Amazon customer but have never seen such sloppy work from Amazon. Highly disappointed. Do not buy this drive from Amazon.

This drive works great and best yet, it didn't die (infant mortality) like the previous drive (factory installed Samsung) did after only six hours. I've had other WD drives and they've been spinning error free for several years.

I would recommend slicing it into 3 partitions. If fragmented the Terabyte can become unstable. Otherwise it works perfect. Buy this , if upgrading or installing it in a new machine - perfect for mass storage . Its a plus that it is SATA - quite fast

Rec'd the unit very fast thanks to Prime shipping - and the packaging was not half as bad as some of the other reviewers have discussed. Please remember though that this is an OEM unit - so no cables, instructions or anything. It also does NOT ship a unit with a legacy power connector (despite WD's instructions to the contrary) so be sure to have a serial ATA signal cable as well as a SATA power cable connector on-hand if you expect to use it.Installation as with most HDD's is simple enough - the Western Digital site gives you all the information you'll need if you are so inclined. Got to admit - it is a bit overwhelming to have this much storage even when i am dealing with my video files. I will likely buy a second!

Runs fast but gets a little hot (42-46 deg) on idle. got it with a good deal from Amazon. Packaging was very good instead of using peanuts (by other merchants). Free shipping was very slow.Used it as my OS drive and is quiet and lots of space, great brand and comes with 5 year warranty!

I eagerly anticipated the receipt of this 1TB HDD to finally put all my data in one place. Music, Documents, and Pictures all on one drive. Easy to back up, easy to move from computer to computer.

I was shafted by the bad Seagate 1.5TB drives. I was greedy and thought the price of the Seagate 1.5TB was great. Not when 2 of 3 drives died. These WD black drives are fantastic. Their quiet enough and seem very stable. I replaced all of my Seagates with these and have not been sorry. These are a great option for a Drobo or other NAS where reliability is paramount.

I recevie the drive last week instaled and so far is working very good.The problem i found is that i recevie it on a box with bubble wrap on it, this is a 100 usd drive so i dont think this is the correct way to ship it.thanks anyway amazon!!

I use this drive in a usb Hard drive docking station to store movies and photos to watch on my WD TV. Transfer speeds are good and the 32 mg buffer makes playback nice and smooth. I bought this drive because it was on sale with free shipping from Amazon, and the WD TV won't see any drives bigger than one terebyte. I should have got 2.

The hard drive is fine. But I do not know its status of brand new or a returned item. When I received it, it did not come with the original package. The warranty paper was not included. The worst part was the anti-static bag not vacuum sealed. The drive seems working fine. In the future, I will not buy PC components from Amazon.

El disco duro WD1001FALS es una buena opci?n para quien busca bastante espacio, desempe?o y confiabilidad a buen precio, puede trabajar tanto en SATA II como en SATA I previa configuraci?n del jumper, el paquete solo trae el disco duro en una bolsa antiest?tica, nada de tornillos, jumpers, cables, manuales o software asi que al comprarlo deben tomar previsiones para instalarlo y configurarlo a gusto, asegurense que el disco duro tenga una ventilaci?n adecuada ya que calienta mas que un disco duro promedio... una ves que este funcionando no los decepcionar?.

I purchased two of these drives and have been using them for about a week now. Incredibly fast and running much cooler than I thought (30-34 degrees C). How can you go wrong with a 1 TB drive for less than $100. As long as the reliability is there, this is probably the best buy on the whole hard drive market.

I ordered this drive to give myself some space. I was previously working with one Sata drive of 200 MB and one IDE drive that was 230 MB, this took the place of the IDE drive. I'd say that this was a really nice upgrade and well worth the money. Oh by the way, this is not a bad price for this amount of space either. Lovin' it so far!!

The drive was horribly packed in between 2 sheets of bubble wrap. It slid to the side of the box making direct contact with the cardboard thus no protection. I dont know if it was damaged but it makes a lot more noise than previous drive. I can hear the clicking as the drive is running. Those whom gave it a silent review can you hear the processing clicking?

Seems like the packaging problem has been solved. I just received this item between two hard foams, the drive was between them. Of course the drive itself works flawlessly and an excellent value. You will not be disappointed.

I got my drive very promptly and it was packaged VERY WELL!!! I've had it running for 15hrs straight setting up my Raid1 and it's performed great. It does seem to be faster then my WD Green but I'm not sure if I would spend the extra coin on the black again due to the fact that it produces a lot more heat.

I got four of these drives running in raid 5 and 0 on an Areca 1210 raid controller for the past 3 months. So far so good. Drives are pretty fast and stable in the raid configuration. Free shipping, no tax, and 5 year warranty on the drives. Can't beat that!

I purchased 2 of these drives with intentions of running them in RAID 0. After a few hours of sorting out my issues with my motherboard, I was able to finally install these 2 drives as a RAID. These drives are ultra fast, and running them in a RAID doubles their speed. I will probably end up buying more of these in the next few weeks. And with the comfort of having a 5 year warranty, you can have peace of mind too!

Bought 2 of the 640GB drives to run in RAID 1. Worked flawlessly. Each of the two drives (ordered from Amzazon) came wrapped in a layer of bubble wrap and placed in seperate boxes then the two boxes had Amazon's standard air bags to cushion the boxes in the main box.These drives are noticeably faster than my old drive with only a 16MB Cache.

I purchased this drive about a week ago (from a local retailer) and could not be happier with it. It installed easily in my Mac Pro (Fall 2006) and formatted in a flash (I have OSX 10.4.11). I'm using it to house my iTunes files, which were taking up almost half of the 250GB drive the Mac Pro came with, but now I have plenty of space for my music and movies.

After researching many websites to find the most reliable and well-rounded hard drive, this WD Caviar Black is clearly the winner.- Best MB per dollar storage space- 32 MB Cache for quicker loading- 7200 RPM and SATA II for higher transfer speeds- Western Digital is considered the most reliable hard drive on many non-bias websites. Lowest drive failure rate.After 3+ years, all of my WD drives are still working - external and internal hard drives. Whereas I've lost a few other brands - such as Maxtor.

I've been using this drive for close to a month now. I've had no problems with it yet. My drive is approximately 931GB, formatted NTFS. Runs quiet, too. Shipping was great...it came in a smaller box, sandwiched between two pieces of egg crate foam. Only gripe is that the price dropped $10 after I bought it...good news for you!

Unfortunately I am having exactly the similar issue that "D. Bachman" is facing (I bought 2 of WD 1TB HDD directly from Amazon to avoid any such issue. Both came factory sealed and when I installed them it has showed 80GB only. And when I test them one by one, it appeared that one is totally not working and the other one is 80GB only instead of 1TB! In addition, it has been written Matrox Corp on the back and WD printed on the front sticker)I have seen a comment from "Levi Flaman" saying [Don't write up a 1 star comment complaining about factory mix-ups] and I totally disagree with him as this is the 2nd time happened to a customer and this could happened to another customer. Either Amazon.com look into this issue and try to work it out, or WD should be careful with their produced products!Just for the information, I am one of the biggest buyer of WD products and this is the first time I face such issue which really disappointed me.I have wrote to Amazon and I am now waiting for their response to replace the items for me.

I always buy Seagate drives but have had problems with them lately. I am an IT expert. Love this drive. Usually buy all my IT gear from [...] but Amazon provides return of defective items directly to it instead of the manufacturer while newegg only allows for a 30 day return to it so I am now buying all my IT stuff from Amazon.

I am both a Seagate fan and a Western Digital fan. My old system had two Seagates and while they were reliable, I wanted speed and lots of it. I decided on a 32MB cache hard drive, but Seagate did not have the space that Western Digital offered with this amount of speed. Plus I love black, and the black name just made me want it more. It is a fast, quiet, cool, and reliable drive for a great price. As the other reviewer said, just get a couple of these and RAID them instead of spending a premium on the 10,000RPM Raptors.

The drive works good. My only complaint is that you said there was free shipping and when I selected that and placed the order it said it would ship in three and 1/2 weeks. I then cancelled the order and placed a new order paying for 2day shipping. Free shipping should ship within three or for days not weeks.

I bought two of these. Just an insane price. Thanks, Amazon. The drives are bulk/OEM which means they come with nothing. Just the drives and the anti-static bags. Do your homework. If you want software to hold your hand through a hard drive install, do not buy this drive. If you need screws, rails, or cables, do not buy this drive.If you want to save some cash while getting an absolutely absurd amount of disk space with SATA2 (3Gbps) plus 32MB of cache (older drives have 4-16MB), then get these drives. They are beasts.After the Seagate fiasco, I vowed to go with an alternative. Western Digital came through with these monster hard drives. Get one. Get two. You will not be disappointed.

these HDD from WD are very efficient and fast. I have purchased 2 of them and my score in vista went from 5.7 to 5.9 ..... wowThey are fast and quiet when under intense read/write loads.Definitely, a recommended buy.

Another great drive from WD. I prefer the black to the green. They seem to run better in RAID setups for my servers. I might try green in a desktop, but I'm not sure how well the changing speeds would work for RAID over the long run.

I bought 2 of these drives for use in my quad core Mac Pro and they are working great! You do have to initialize the drives but you have to do that no matter what. Once they were in just a couple of seconds later they were up and running. I have had them a few months and absolutely no problems doing heavy professional video on them.

Wow, it is much faster than my old 160GB Western Digital SE. "Much faster" means you can easily notice the performance difference almost everywhere.However, it also works much louder than my old drive and some contemporary rivals. My lots of work is on DSLR Raw files handling, such as converting hundreds RAWs to JPGs. It is really loud during this kind of process...I can even distinguish every little reading/writing "peak"(1 raw->1 jpg) just by listening the sound:) This is the only downside of this drive.
