In the current age of digital media a large hard drive is an absolute must. I've now replaced the hard drives in my current desktop computer 3 times and it hasn't been due to failed drives. This drive is 4x larger than the one it replaced and it clearly outperforms it on all levels. I was concerned with the overall speed of the drive due to it's size, however, I realize that I had nothing to worry about. The drive was easy to install and performs extremely well. The only issue I had was assoicated with Western Digital's unique connection cable. I wasn't sure if I needed the cable or not and ordered one anyway (turned out I didn't need it). This is a great drive at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend and I'm presonally debating purchasing a 2nd.

Very good affordable fast drive but Amazon should be ashamed of how they shipped it to me. It was just floating around a box with no protection and of course the monkeys as fedex delivered the box in almost crushed condition. No bubblewrap, no eggshells just a hard drive bangin around a big box that was treated as a volleyball by fedex. I really was expecting to have to ship it back thinking it must be broken, but its been a+ since installed. Very impressed with the speed of the drive.

The Caviar Black model of drives differ in three ways from Blue in three major ways:1) 32MB buffer vs 16MB. This means the drive is overall faster because it can store more data in memory local to the drive. So if you access the same data frequently there is little or no drive access to get at the data.2) Dual processors vs single. This will alleviate the load on your CPU as the drive itself has more processing power locally.3) Five year warranty vs three. Five years is a lifetime in hardware. Basically, you're covered for longer than you will most likely use the drive.The Caviar Black line comes in three four sizes; 1TB, 750GB, 640GB, and 500GB. The 1TB and 640GB are the fastest because they use a denser platter technology which allows the drive head to get at the data quicker. The 750GB and 500GB are no slouches though and the differences in speed will not be noticeable to most people under most real-world usage scenarios.Caviar Black drives are the fastest affordable consumer drives available today. If you want faster you have to look that the VelociRaptor 10000RPM line of drives but expect to pay a lot more for a lot less storage.I measured the speed of the 750GB model using the HD Tune utility and access time was a fast 12.5ms with less than 1% CPU usage on my 3.2Ghz Intel Quad Core setup. The drive runs cool at 32°C in my system and is quiet. Overall a great drive at a great price. You can't really go wrong.

Very easy to integrate, I use a SATA/150 PCI card in an older Dell Dimension tower. After formatting the disk, it was ready for use. Very happy with this 1TB Hard Disk. It has an excellent record from users. - LF

The drive installed easily. Formatted easily. But it is much more noisey than my original Western Digital. All I could think of is the old SCSI drives. I don't know if it's defective. Would like to try another.

This drive is fast and reliable(so far) quiet and runs cool. Not much else you can ask for from a hard drive. I find it interesting how much hard drive companies change, seagate used to be the best with western digital 2nd and maxtor a distance 3rd. Then samsung got into it and quickly rose toward the top while seagate got much less reliable. Right now though I think when you take into account everything, western digital is definitely the best. Especially these black drives, probably a little slower than the raptors but not that much and they don't cost that much more than the competitors it's a no-brainer.

Bought this "black" series because it is a dual processor based higher end drive, It works as promised is fast 7200RPM and quiet and athough it is not the low power model it draws less than 10W according to specs so it should work with all systems. As a tech I lose a whole day rebuilding data and OS when a drive fails so the extra $10-$50 dollars spent on the black series is worth it to me. And you get a 5 year warranty (2 additional years for the extra money)

First one arrived DOA, but Amazon sent me a replacement in just 2 business days. Put it into my computer and it worked just fine. Only gave it 3 stars because I had to send the first one back.

I've been using 2 of these drives for the past 2 months, I haven't had any problems but the drives are noisy like back in the old days. The 32 MB cache doesn't seem to be any better of a performer than a 16 MB cache, I was a little disappointed thus the missing stars.

I ordered 2 of these and they shipped from 2 different warehouses. I am happy to report both drives where packed very good in the boxes.I was a little aprehensive to order these from Amazon due to all the reports of bad packaging.I have to say the performance of these drives is not what I'd hoped for.The next HD I buy I will probably try another brand. In the windows 7 Performance rating I'm only getting a 5.9 which is the lowest score in my system

Installed in a Linux workstation. As with other HD manufacturers, WD uses metric units, meaning that the drive has an unformatted capacity of 1000GB. In my system, formatted capacity is 917 GiB (binary). The work I do is very read/write intensive, and the drives will often see almost continuous use for a week or more. No problems after a month: noise levels are well below the background of the (admittedly noisy) system; temperature seems acceptable. If you are using RAID you should buy the raid-edition drives

I've only had these WD's for a week and a half but they're working well in my 4-drive NAS system and pass full SMART tests every night. My main comment is that each came in satisfactory packaging, a specific cardboard box with two soft molded plastic end caps. Love Amazon & Prime.I originally purchased 4 Seagate 1.5 TB drives locally but returned them since the outer packaging part number was misleading and didn't match the drives inside, which have a notorious failure rate. They're the ones with the '341' in the part number.. avoid them, your data is too precious to risk.

Used Acronis Ture Image and cloned Windows 7 Ultimate + data from a 1 TB to this monster drive. Flawless clone, drive is fast, well done WD! I see ordering 2 more in the near future.

Got a great price for the performance and capacity of this drive from Amazon. Since the drive was an OEM version, it came with no software. Went to the Western Digital site and downloaded their special edition of Acronis True Image software to create a copy of my existing drive. I could not get this program to complete the copy on my system. WD support tried to help but I eventually went to a third party software to create my copy. The drive itself is fantastic, quick and quiet. Highly recommended.

I have an application that needs very fast streaming reads, almost continually, over a multi-TB dataset. Write performance isn't that important, but straight-line speed and data integrity are. Oh, and it's cost-sensitive too. Good luck, right?I settled on a RAID 6 array of eight WD1001FALS disks connected to Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 controllers, housed in a RPC-4020 case. I plan to add another 2-4 disks in a month or two. Write performance isn't critical, so software RAID will do -- instead of spending a thousand bucks on a RAID controller, I'll buy some simple SATA controllers, an extra quad-core CPU, more RAM, and still have saved enough money to buy five more disks. At maximum write speeds, parity computation uses almost an entire processor core; of course, I have seven more. Turns out Core 2 chips are really good at parity computation, even RAID 6.Typical large file reads:3498999611 bytes (3.5 GB) copied, 6.04208 s, 579 MB/s3999941908 bytes (4.0 GB) copied, 6.56308 s, 609 MB/sDespite being software RAID over dumb SATA controllers, performance is excellent. (For comparison, Gigabit Ethernet has a theoretical maximum speed of 125 MB/s.) Throughput often reaches 100 MB/s per disk.Really, I'm not sure you can go wrong with these drives. They're reasonably quiet, very fast, and don't run any hotter than their competitors. Sounds like a winner to me.

I bought this a month ago, the drive is almost silent, no high grinding noise, i registered it at western digital and got 5 years warranty. great value for the price.The only thing i didnt like is the way its packaged, however, the drive is rock solid, chkdisk submitted no errors so im kinda happy it didnt get damaged due to poor packaging.P.S: Make sure to format it FULL FORMAT not quick format, the difference is FULL FORMAT will perform "check disk" as well and report any errors found, if you get at least 1 bad sector, make sure to RMA it.

I bought this 640Gig Black Hard drive to speed up my loadtimes. I used it for my C: drive and noticed immediately how fast it loaded windows than my 250gig Sata drive. Also my games loaded about 30% faster now. So I think it was a very good investment over a Green or Blue version of this drive.

A former Seagate customer, but I have heard of all the Seagate failures since they purchased Maxtor. I have had this drive for about 30 days and it has met my expectations. No issues and I would by another. For users where performance isn't quite as important, consider the Green drive by WD which dynamically adjusts the drives rpm to safe power and heat dissipation.

I ordered 4 WD 1TB Black Caviar drives for an internal RAID 0. These are great drives with great speed. Amazon packaging for shipment is approaching criminal negligence.Each drive, in it's sliver antistatic bag, is dropped into an individual cardboard box that is much too big to give any support or protection, with just a sheet of NOVUS Inflatable Plastic Packaging lying on top of the drive as protection from shock damage in transit. The drives are still free to slam around inside of the individual boxes.This is unacceptable packaging for hard drives. There have been several negatives reviews of this product because of Amazon's poor packaging. Does anyone at Amazon read these reviews?

I have read a couple of reviews that say this HD is loud, but it has been incredibly quiet for me. Doesn't get very hot either. This is the second WD drive I have bought, and the first black, I would buy one again in a heart beat.

My HDD arrived in a box, inside another box. Neither box was stuffed tightly with packaging material, but there seemed to be enough IMO. I'm sure the HDD would have sustained no damage if dropped from 5 feet packed the way it was. Maybe Amazon is listening!The unit is up and running without a fuss. It performs well also, with a burst speed of 233MB/sec and a sequential read speed peaking at 110MB/sec (measured with HD Tach). These numbers are identical to my 500 gig WD HDD, which is about a year old.

Overall the drive is very good. connected and was recognized by the system in a flash...nothing but good news as per the drive but for the packaging.....another story althogher, it was beyond horrible. The item was loose in the box, no protection whatsoever!

I have been using this hard drive for about a month now and it's working just fine. It's much quieter and faster than my 500GB Western Digital Cavier Blue. Never had any problem with a Western Digital drive. Happy with this purchase from Amazon.com.

bought this drive on sale at last BF, used this for video edit, to store captured video files and working right out of the box. no problem so far. no noise, ...recommend to everybody. plus, amazon.com is ok for shipping, reliable but not fast.

The drive was not secure in the shipping box; I could feel the drive sliding around before opening the box. When I opened the sealed antistatic bag, I noticed the moisture gel pack had broken because beads were falling out of the bag. The worst part of it was when I pulled the hard drive out of the bag and turned the drive upside down, a couple of beads came out of the drive. I had 2 choices at this time, send it back or install it and see if it works. I decided to take my chances and formatted the drive. The drive works fine and I'm using it as an external back-up drive in a USB enclosure. I read all the reviews beforehand so I knew what to expect when ordering the OEM drive. It has a 5 year warranty and it seems to work even though it got tossed around in shipping.

I have five of these drives and they work great. I don't like paying for things twice and the 5 year warranty makes this drive even better. I write the date and how many years the warranty is on the top of all my drives to help me keep up with warranties. This drive is worth the money!

In all fairness this isn't a problem with the WD (although I did have two WD fail on me within one month), it's a problem with Amazon's shipping. Haven't had a problem with items that Amazon has shipped (but I have with external vendors) but this package was ridiculous. The drive arrived with two deflated strips of plastic. Even if they were fully inflated I would not be happy with the packing at all, not nearly enough. Funny cause when I order a pack of CDs they are shipped in two boxes with two levels of padding. Huh? The drive was also scratched up.. it was odd because the packaging though damaged didn't have any way to scratch the drive (cardboard vs steel, no match). I have a feeling it was refurbished or at the very least repackaged..Do better next time plz..

I use my Powermac G5 mostly for audio (Pro Tools, Reason ect.)recieved the package in good shape the day before it was scheduled. Nice.I agree with a couple others about the packaging. It was a little "iffy".Installed in the Mac with no trouble. I was not sure what to do next.That is a Mac thing. If anyone is wondering, I opened "disc utility" and erased the disc.The computer found the hard drive and it works great.I have not noticed any noise or heat or anything.I've had it a couple weeks and it's so nice to have 1 TB of room for my files,and for a hundred bucks!(shipped)

I thought Western Black drive is better than green drives, therefore I ordered a black drive, but I unfortunately had a hard time with it while I formated it at the first time. So it was returned.Anyway, it is good for the customers who buy the hard drives because the price is getting lower and lower.

Each OEM drive was in its own box with molded plastic at each end of the drive to hold it in place. I bought two drives which were then packaged in a larger box with plenty of air peanuts.I am running the drives in RAID 0 configuration. They are very fast and quiet. I can barely hear them.As usual Amazon shipping was fast!!!

This HD works extremely well with my system. I play a lot of high end graphics games and it loads them fast and plays them without any communication lag at all. I would say for the value it is a very good choice for someone looking to expand their storage or add a new operating system hard drive to their system.

One has to be careful with external hard-drive enclosures and read the specs, as my previously purchase did not support large capacity drives. This one easily supports my 1 Terabyte drive and was extremely easy to set up.

I bought these drives for my HP Home Server. They come with no instructions or mounting hardware which I did not need as the server was ready for drives to be inserted. They installed in two min and were ready for use. They are perfect for my use.

This is a sweet HD...got hooked up in an older 939 4400X2 OC'd (2.62ghz) on a ASUS A8N32SLI-Deluxe MoBo wit Dual Boot Windows Vista/XP...works flawlessly and is almost 20F cooler then my old seagate 300SATA i had....i Have all my stuff i need on it and i still got 600gb left new vids n pics!!!! and this is only the first of 2 that i got after i bought the original!!!! very FAST scores 5.9 on VISTA....XP is a snap...compared to the 300gb i had this 1TB is ONFIRE INSANE FAST and COOL!!!! I have built many PC's and this is a very nice drive...isn't too loud and does it's JOB GREAT!!!!

Purchased this product as part of a 2TB backup drive. So far I'm very happy with its performace. It's fairly quiet, even when taking a full load of files. Amazon's packaging seemed fine considering a hard drive really isn't fragile until its running. Make sure you realize you're buying FALS, the performance version. A similar green drive version exists under EADS, which consumes less power.I have never had a problem with Western Digital and have been using their drives since the old 16GB models. I expect this drive to last at least 3-5 years under heavy stress.

THIS IS A GREAT HARD DRIVE, YOU CAN HEAR IT WRITING IF YOU LISTEN FOR IT, BUT DUH, IT'S A WORKHORSE NOT A 'GREEN DRIVE'. MUCH FASTER THAN MY PREVIOUS HARD DRIVES. OVERALL A GREAT PURCHASE, AND AMAZONS PACKAGING WAS ADEQUATE.
