Bought this 3-in-1 vax as it looked like it has the best reviews for the value. I was not disappointed. The very first day it arrived one of my dogs had an accident on the carpet and it lifted the liquid until almost dry - suction amazing. I then washed the area which looked and smelled like new afterwards. Next I washed our cream coloured dining room carpet, which is just off the kitchen and gets really mucky with the dogs/kids running in from the garden. Again, it came up like new and was bone dry in a couple of hours. I then did the seats and carpets in our car; again brought them up like new. Don't agree with a couple of reviews saying the instructions were difficult to follow - very straight forward and easy to use. Fab - would highly recommend. Only downfall - everyone wants to borrow it!

I've owned this Vax for just over a month and used it around the house, to clean the car and to clean up after builders etc and it has performed very well.
Positives:
1) Great suction for domestic vacuuming, much better than my existing cylinder vac, really feels like it is gripping the floor. The vac head has a smooth surface setting eg laminate and a carpet setting which lowers bristles on the vac head so that you can brush/vac the floor which does clean it more effectively.
2) Very useful tools - long tool useful for crevices (particularly useful in the car down the side of seats etc.), dusting tool with nylon bristles useful for skirting boards (means you dont get black hoover end marks) and then a snub nosed tool which is useful for stairs. All clip onto the cyliner for storage but do get knocked off.
3) Carpet washing performance has been impressive, incredible how dirty the water was from cleaning what I thought were pretty clean carpets.
Negatives:
1) More of a design niggle than a real show stopper - The water spray for the carpet cleaner runs as a clear tube from the small black circle just above the vax logo on the cylinder, you attach it when you want to use the wash function, and it clips to the vacuum hose. The water/detergent flow is turned off and on by pressing a button on the top handle which is logical, but if you want to control the outflow (i.e. not just on and off but to have more or less fluid deployed) the control lever is on the wash head down on the floor - surely it would have been better placed where your hands are on the hose. This is a relatively small niggle, but could have been designed better and had it had a better placed flow control I would have given it 5 stars.
Overall:
Definitely a great tool to have. Some reviews note that it's heavy on the stairs. Personally as a young man I don't find it difficult at all, but if you were elderly and you had filled it full of wash solution then maybe this would be the case. I think it's very mobile and it's not too big for use around the house, although it will live in the garage.
I have used the vax for normal cleaning around the house and also to clean up on a small house refurb where the dirt and dust is significantly bigger than you would normally experience at home and the vax coped without any problem - it's a sturdy piece of kit that has handled any challenge I have put to it.
I also managed to use it to clean some spot blemishes out of a sofa which has saved having to wash all the covers.
Interestingly the instructions note that you can use it to suck out the gunk/hair from a blocked sink pipe - I haven't tried this but it's a novel idea.
I will be buying the upholstery tool to wash my car seats and footwells - this is not possible with the floor head, it's too big, but that's fine it does what it's supposed to.
Overall I would recommend the Vax 6131.

THIS IS MY 2ND VAX, AND I WOULD NEVER CHANGE TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN A VAX. THE SUCTION IS SO POWERFUL IT LIFTS THE CARPET, GREAT. WE HAVE TWO SMALL VERY FLUFFY DOGS A SO YOU CAN IMAGINE THE HAIR OFF THEM, WE JUST GET THE VAX OUT AND IT DOES THE JOB. THE CORD IS VERY LONG ALSO WHICH IT HELPFUL. THE CLEANER IS GREAT ITS LIKE HAVING NEW CARPETS LAID.

Bought this vax rather than hiring a carpet cleaner every six months. Was easy to set up, took minutes to get going and did a great job. Tools were all useful and easy to plug in. Only using it for cleaning, but the conversion to dry vacuum is very quick and easy if required. Good size for storage too, which was another reason I went for this rather than the upright cleaner out there.

Great value and very good quality. with carpet washing solution (6pack) costed me around 100. Doing very well both as a vacuum and carpet washer. it is quite big but to be fair expected it to be heavier. the ony problem I have is non retrievable cable but thats a minor one.

I had been using Henrys for years. The VAX is far superior. It is lighter to use & pulls around easily when vacuming. The carpets are noticeably clean when hoovering. The carpet washing option is fantastic. If you have pets/kids etc you will want to clean your carpets regularly & this give you an on tap option to do so - saving money & hassle of getting cleaners in. I could not believe how clean the 1 year old carpets came up. They dry very quickly too & the mogs approve of the clean smell! My only negative comment would be that the instructions on how to change the hoover to a washer are missing a crucial step on pulling a length of plastic down from the inside of the lid. I had to look this up online after reading the instructions provided again and again.
The half price offer made this a very good buy. My old Henry is in the garage now. I would not hesitate to recommend the Vax.

I've just taken delivery of the VAX 6131T. It was bought as a replacement for our 23 year old Hoover Aquamaster (RIP) after the motor started slowing down. It is planned just to be used to shampoo carpets. I tried it on our kitchen carpet which was recently washed with the Hoover (when it started to die). The VAX has done a good job and drawn out quite a bit of dirt. It is quite noisy compared to the Hoover but that isn't a problem. I found it was easy to use, water in the top and then empty the bottom out later. I doesn't hold as much as the Hoover but more than a lot of the uprights I looked at. The uprights also seemed cumbersome - moving a gallon + of water back and forth would soon be tiring and a pain in the old joints!! The mains lead is nice and long so I won't have to use any extension leads. First impressions are good and at

I HAD ONE MANY YEARS AGO AND IT WAS OK, THE SUCTION WASN'T GREAT. JUST BROUGHT THIS NEW MODEL AND IT'S EVERYTHING I THOUGHT IT'D BE AND MORE. FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE AND GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY. THANK YOU AMAZON.

I received the Vax 6131T carpet washer and vacuum cleaner and was very pleased with both the vacuum and the washer elements this product performed. I wish i had brought one a long time ago. Particularly impressed that not only did it perform in a good manner but also came with a 2 year gaurantee.

These bags work exactly as you would imagine. We use our VAX for cleaning up dust, small bits of rubble, and general DIY debris. The bags are strong enough for this.

With a toddler, a cat, and a dog, my living room rug and couch were looking and smelling pretty grubby! I'd tried spot cleaning by hand but it just didn't work well enough. I'm absolutely delighted with the results of this vacuum. As a dry vac, it has incredible suction and does a great job at cleaning up crud and pet hair and does so quickly without requiring many passes.
As a wet vac, it does an amazing job, allowing control of just how wet you get everything, and sucks up almost all the water so it doesn't take long for anything to dry. The capacity of water is a little on the low side (I had to refill once to finish my area rug and couch so it might take several refills to do a full carpeted room) but then, it's a small, easily-manuverable unit (even cute, as it follows you around on its smooth casters) which means I can easily take it up and down the stairs with one hand. Easy to use with a quick read of the manual, and easy to convert from one mode to the other.
My couch and rug look almost new now, and it's no big deal to pull it out for a quick spot clean. I can't speak to its durability as we've only had it a short time, but it comes with a guarantee, and seems very well made. Highly recommended!
Edited to add, some years later - this thing is still going strong. Only one part has broken (the large, flat head for vacuuming) but that was due to it falling down the stairs, and it's easily replaced with a cheap equivalent at any vacuum store). Even more recommended now - does a fantastic job, really durable.

The results for carpet shampooing are great. I used it on our cream carpets and it looked as if we'd had them professionally cleaned, at great expense.
Converting the unit from vacuuming to washing carpets is a bit cumbersome. You switch the unit of from the mains (remove the plug). You then remove both side clips and lift the top 'bucket'. You then lift out the cone-filter-unit, turn & pull out the hose & remove the dust bag. As I removed the dust bag, I found it hard to avoid getting dirt all over my hands, it was a little messy. You then place the clean water reservoir in the bucket, fill it with cold tap water and add a cap-full of AAA solution (provided in the box) per litre of clean water. I suppose this doesn't take more than 5 minutes, at the most.
Once all this is done, and the pipes have been attached in the right places, it is very easy to use as a carpet shampooer. As the machine fills with dirty water, it becomes more heavy (obviously). It becomes increasingly hard to maneuver; stairs are difficult to do without the help of a second person, to stop the unit from toppling over as you tug the hose.
After use, you need to empty the dirty water tank. I'd advise you don't wear your best clothes for this(!) You might want to wear gloves, and a take a shower afterwards. You cannot now use the Vax appliance for regular vacuuming, until the dirty water tank is BONE DRY. This is where the dust bag resides; it start to fall apart unless the tank has been VERY thoroughly dried.
I'd recommend this if you have space to store a bulky machine like this, and need to wash dirty carpets on a regular basis. So, if you have a central London apartment of limited size, I'd avoid this. Stick to a regular, more compact vacuum cleaner. When your carpets get really dirty, perhaps hire a unit or pay hire someone from a carpet-cleaning service. Will it be more expensive? Yes, but it will be a lot less messy.
If you are fortunate enough to live in an apartment larger than a shoe-box, with adequate storage space, this appliance is worth getting. You also have to be prepared to get your hands dirty (both figuratively and literally), of course. It's useful to have around for those occasional spills or accidents.

Very easy to set up and switch between 'dry' and 'wet', however I have another vacuum and I bought this for 'wet' vacumming and carpet washing so I keep it set up for spills and cleaning. Easy to use, easy to clean, not to noisy when in use, and a very long plug cable which you need to wrap around the drum during storage. Great product

this is my second multi Vax and i have not been disappointed i was tempted by the great price offer from amazon which was a bonus and almost half price in comparison to other retailers, although a bit noisy it picks up great and although i have not yet had any spills to clean up i am sure it will do just as good a job as my old model, i use my hoover every day as i have 2 white cats and i would be lost without it, ive tried other cylinder hoovers in the past including the bag-less type which to me where more trouble than they are worth, the dust and muck collects and leaves the cylinder dirty and the filters clogged all too easy, i acquired my original vax off my daughter who left it behind and was duly impressed by its performance i have now passed that on to a friend whose hoover was on its last legs,she is made up with it too. what can i say i have been using the vax nearly every day for the past 4 years and have only needed to replace the bags and buy a pack of new filters, you can pick bags and filters up at reasonable prices through amazon or ebay this hoover is built to last and well made, cant say more.

I was a big fan of these in the 80,s I have bought loads of other cleaners including 3 Dysons and a few carpet cleaners .So when i was looking for new ones again i decided to go back to the good old Vax . Its fantastic .. does everything i want in 1 machine and the price on Amazon will not be beaten . Takes a bit of getting used to again but well worth it .. very very happy with mine

The 6131T is the latest version of the veteran original VAX canister cleaner and one that in an earlier guise we also had several years experience of.
Arriving with all its components snugly fitted into a stout cardboard box(would recommend keeping the box as a means of storing what is a bit of a collection with wet & dry canister rings, wet carpet head, dry carpet/hard surface cleaning head, upholstery tool, crevice tool, flexible hose, 2 piece extension pieces), it doesn't take too long to assemble the unit as long as you follow the instructions!
Storage space might be an issue as the unit is not designed for compact storage, unlike its sister VAX upright wet and dry cleaners. Changing from wet to dry cannot also be done quickly without ensuring that common components (e.g. hose) are dry.
The assembled canister is quite heavy, especially when loaded with water, and although the unit has casters, it is not the easiest to manoeuvre. A little practice however and you lose the fear of damaging furniture!
Wet carpet cleaning is extremely good even although the head does not have rotating brushes. You do however have to manually mix the VAX fluid with clean water to create the cleaning solution. VAX uprights tend to do the mixing automatically and have rotating brushes.
Domestic flood recovery is perhaps this machine's greatest strength and we can vouch for its invaluable performance in this hopefully infrequent role.On those occasions, the performance of the 6131 was priceless. For everyday carpet stain removal, we have however found a VAX upright quicker and easier to use (no assembly required)but the 6131 is better for serious stains.
Dry vacuuming is good albeit the power is not adjustable which means the 6131 is too powerful for some situations.
In summary, the 6131 is still a very strong contender as an infrequent carpet wet cleaner and the latest updates mean that it will not disappoint in that role, offering secondary dry vacuuming capability. I would however strongly recommend considering storage requirements and its VAX upright stablemates to see if what best suits your personal requirements.

The hoover is not bad. The motor strong enough and enough to clean carpet but the pipes and the cleaner head, the dust tank is weak plastic.
After the 1st use some plastic clip broken...
