I bought this item to use with an OLPC laptop which has no ethnet portand runs a version of Linux as its operating system. It works perfectlyon this system "out of the box."

The photo showing this adapter is of an older version. The functional specs are the same. The new version is just as solidly constructed, and the USB cord is permanently attached now, which I consider a better design compared to the older version. The cord can't get separated from the adapter and lost - or accidentally pulled out of the adapter. The RJ-45 ethernet port is solid and seating/locking of an ethernet cable in it is positive - it's not going to fall out unless the plug on your ethernet cable is broken (and that's your own cable problem, not the adapter's port).Plugged it into the USB ports on a couple different computers. Both WinXP SP2 (32-bit) and WinXP /x64 SP2 (64-bit - aka 2003 Server /x64) recognized and loaded the drivers for it without any hassle or having to install drivers. Older versions of Windows (e.g. Win98 and possibly WinME) would require driver installation for it - these kinds of things didn't exist (nor did their chipsets) when those O/S's were created. Gave it 5 stars because this is about as easy as it gets - true Plug 'n Play in WinXP - and mechanically well constructed. You do have to configure your new ethernet port, but you'd have to do that regardless of what kind of network adapter you installed.

I'll echo the previous review's sentiments about the ease of setting up the card with Windows XP - no problems at all. I did not have as much luck installing in a x86 box running Ubuntu 6.06 server. I never did completely resolve the issue but would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

This item is perfect for your needs. It worked perfectly for me and solved my problem instantly. It has drivers for Vista if you need them.

It's a great dongle to keep around when you need an ethernet connection. It's too bad you still have to keep the driver disk around as the drivers are not built into Windows.Operation couldn't be simpler and also works with Vista.It wouldn't bridge in VMWare, but you can still use it with Virtual Server.

I bought this for my computer-illiterate older sister, who uses an ancient Dell laptop running Windows 98. There were no problems installing it and have been none using it.

The ethernet port on my laptop stopped working, so I got this adapter to keep my laptop connected to the internet. It works great out of the box and I have noticed no decrease in internet performance relative to when the ethernet port was working.

This is a great USB ethernet adapter, it installs automatically on Windows XP, needed no additional configuration, unless you use a static IP address.What made this adapter great was its Linux compatibility, I wasn't expecting much as Trendnet doesn't list linux drivers on their support site. But, it worked out of the box with Ubuntu Linux (Feisty 7.04). Again, all I needed to do was setup the static IP and restart the OS and it worked :) Couldn't ask for more.

What else can I say. It works as advertised. I have an old laptop that does not have an ethernet connection on it so I bought this. I was surprised how expensive these adapters are in stores. I bought this and tried it. No problems. I am running an old HP Pavilion N3290 with windows 98/2.

Very easy to install but you still have to follow the instructions.. I had my computer hooked up to ethernet in a matter of minutes.. The cord has some length to it so if you have a short cord it give you extra slack.. It's amazing what technology can do.. No taking apart anything just plug, follow instuctiions, and use.. When my desktop crashed this was a complete lifesaver that had me and my corporation in the making up and running.. I'm not out of the woods but I have a fighting chance with this device.. I would give it 6 stars but I guess that's not an option.. :)

I use a pair of these cards in Linux (FC6) and Windows XP. They were easy to install and support jumbo frames. On Linux, I set the MTU to 7000 and on Windows XP there was only a setting to "enable" jumbo frames in the Advanced tab on the driver properties. The Netgear GS605 supports jumbo frames, too, and I saw the transfer of a 3.5GB file go from 3m40s to 3m10s after enabling jumbo frames on both hosts.Highly recommended.

Pro: Easy installation. I didn't use the CD provided. Just plugged it in and it began working as advertised.Con: Can be cheaper.Since most newer laptop PCs has ethernet built-in, manufacturers stopped making them and choices were limited. I was hoping that I could get one that would cost cheaper than wireless adapter but no such luck...they cost a lot more than I thought.Otherwise, it's a good product.

Windows XP SP2 actually have inbox driver for this adapter. This means that all you need to use this adapter is to plug it in.If you use Windows Vista, you need to install the driver that comes with the installation disk.

I purchased this to be able do updates to an associate's laptop at my home. The laptop is running Win XP home. When I received the adapter, I followed the enclosed instructions for hooking it up and it worked perfectly the first time. I did not need the enclosed drivers disc. Much cheaper than buying a PC card to connect to the net.

I was helping my Dad migrate from an old Windows 98 machine to a new machine - and we needed to move the data. The version of windows 98 was old enought that it did not recognize my USB disk drive, nor my USB thumb drive. I ordered this adapter and I was able to successfully export the W98 hard drive and copy the data that Dad needed to his new machine.(Had to turn off firewalls on both systems, but it worked.)

I am not very good with computer and when I got here to the states i found out that my computer didnt have an Ethernet conexion. I went to everysingle store around and couldnt find anything to solve my problem. I finally went on line an found this PCMCIA card. It was what i needed!!.easy to install and very simple!..it works great!
