I erased this drive and reformatted it for use with my two macs. This was necessary. It is amazing how fast it backed up 150 gb. Much faster than my previous external drive. After reading other reviews I realized the second usb connection is not necessary for my macbook air which was good news because of the usb port configuration. I only needed to use the thicker of the two cords and had no problem. I plugged in both cords to my mac mini but only because I had two usb ports next to each other. I love the size of this drive. I can just stash it away in a drawer when I am not using it. I also got it for $80 from Amazon. Glad I got it when I did because now its $94 from Amazon and they are out of stock.

Needing an external hard drive, but having little working knowledge of these devices, I called my computer guru sister who recommended this particular external hard drive.First: price was very competitiveSecond: arrival was very quickThird: instructions were good, I actually thought that I would have to call the guru sister to install the device, however I was able to do it on my own. Very easyThis device met all my requirements in that I can download all my info and have lots of room to spare(for me probably be years!); it is very durable. I travel and take it with me. It fits easily in my laptop case or purse; I actually dropped it on the concrete outside of the mall, no damage to either the case or the stored info!I am so impressed that I will be ordering several more for christmas gifts.I am very pleased with this purchase. Amazon is fast becoming my favorite place to shop, the promptness of delivery is consistant!

This is a well made drive that functions as advertised and, unlike some other portable hard drives from bigger names that have developed problems after a few months, my 500gb drive has been going strong for a year with no glitches. I'm using it on both a Mac laptop and a PC laptop with no problems at all. There are bigger and faster drives out there now and I'm surprised Transcend hasn't kept up with the times - the drive no longer represents quite the value it did a year ago, but it is an excellent drive. It comes with backup software but like most software included by drive manufacturers, it is a poor compromise at best. I reformatted the drive to remove all the included software - I use backup solutions from other providers. Some reviewers have totally missed the point of the included cable. Yes, the cable includes two USB plugs but it's not mandatory to use both. The secondary USB plug (on the thinner cable) is there to allow the drive to be used on mostly older or very small laptops that do not provide enough power through a single USB jack to run the drive. For most users, it will require only a single USB jack. It's a solid drive.

Bought this thing for a data backup solution and to hold movies, video games, etc on my first deployment to Afghanistan. Point blank this thing is a beast. It has survived multiple falls most from over 6 feet, 100+ degree weather, harsh sandy environments, and still kept chugging along. Then it went back again for a second torture test, and brushed it off like "no big deal man". I wish it were a terabyte, but you can't get everything you want. If you do need a durable solution this is it though.

Last week if you would have asked me I would have nothing but good things to say about this drive except that their software is total garbage. Today, it's junk. I don't appreciate the whole concept of disposable electronics like this where you get a few months or a year out of something and then it's gone. I'm sorry but a year is unacceptable and I'm now done with Transcend and they're poor life span products.

This device does the job as promised and has a good sturdy build and feel to it. The transfer rate is nice and fast (pretty standard though) and while I have never tested the "anti-shock" feature (of course!) - there is no reason for me to doubt it either. It is quiet during operation and with the price it is offered for - quite a good value!

It was bigger than I was expecting but not so big that it's an issue. I've been carrying it around in my laptop backpack for a few months with no problems. It seems to be true to its promise to absorb the bumps that come along with being a portable device.Regarding the included software, I am using it with a MacBook Pro for which the software will not work. It serves as my drive for Time Machine and works well in that capacity.Regarding the connection, it requires the use of TWO USB ports to power it so you might want to choose a different drive if you only have two USB ports and want to keep it connected at all times.This is my third Transcend product and they have all worked well and are always less expensive than the more well known brands.UPDATE: The drive failed after 10 months (went into "read only" mode). Customer service quickly identified the drive as "dead" and arranged for a warranty replacement at no cost. I got the new drive quickly and returned the dead drive free of charge.

So far (day 3) this product looks and feels ultra sturdy. Better than those dinky seagate drives. I didn't realize it had an older FAT32 file system, which limits a file size to 4gb. If you can use NTFS, which does not limit file size, you can convert the drive from one file system to another. I think Macs can't write to NTFS, but PCs can.You can find instructions on how to convert from FAT32 to NTFS on google. Amazon won't let me post link here.If prompted for the volume name, you can find that in the hard drive properties - mine said 'transcend'Worked perfectly and now I can use the hard drive to store large files (>4 gb).I also didn't realize it has a 2 usb connection, but it works with only one usb plugged in.

I have had this drive for about 6 months now and it still works ok, but a couple things you should know:- It requires a Y USB cable (comes with one) that will use 2 USB ports on your computer for power, so if you have a macbook this drive will use all your ports on the go (no room for a wired mouse etc)- It doesn't register being plugged in 4 out of 5 times, and I'll have to un plug it and try again. This is troubling because the disk will spin up but the light won't come on and my computer won't see the drive.- Calling this rugged is a joke, the case visibly flexes with a gentle squeeze, I doubt it would survive a drop test.

Of all the portable hard drives that I've dealt with in the past "I work on computers as a hobby" I had some come to me to see if they could be fixed ... I've never had one of these come back? They're plug and play ready "meaning you plug it in your machine and it automatically loads the drivers and you're ready to use it and when you're done you just unplug it" another thing is the compact size and most of all the rubberized case which is somewhat shock resistant. I've purchased at least ten of these so far for different customers and everyone has had nothing but the best of luck with them. Another thing to mention if you didn't know is that the power for them is supplied via the usb meaning you don't need to fuss with a separate power supply making it a very nice portable drive.I did buy here at Amazon at the time too they have always had the best price! Thanks Amazon!

This is a well built unit that is only let down by the software it comes with. In common with other users mine worked in English a couple of times then defaulted to Chinese (or Japansese - I don't know which). Trying to update it didn't help much as the website was flakey too. Provided you are happy saving unencrypted files to the drive then it is fine. If you want to encrypt files or make complex backups then you are probably better using third party software rather than Transcend Elite.

This product exceeded all my expectations by far! I am deployed to Kuwait right now so I NEEDED something to withstand the elements and all the moving around that I do and this product fits the bill! I have had it about 2 months now and it has been dropped, kicked, ran OVER by a humvee and the thing still works amazingly!! The seller delivered earlier than expected which is a plus! All in all I would rate it a 99 out of 100!! The guys at Transcend did an excellent job with this one!!

Just got this 500gb external drive. Love the way it looks, feels (rugged) and operates (fast and quiet -- maybe a tad too warm).My concern is that the actual drive inside the unit turned out to be a Western Digital. (This is easy to tell via the free Western Digital Logistics program, or -- I assume -- similar programs.) In fact, I bought this drive specifically to replace a Western Digital MyBook Premium external drive that gave me some major problems including data loss. And I have had iffy and worrisome performance from several WD laptop drives -- decidedly more than I've experienced with other brands.WOULD BE INTERESTED TO HEAR IF OTHERS ALSO HAVE WESTERN DIGITALS INSIIDE THEIR TRANSCENDS, and if not, what's in there instead. If you do have WD in there, how long have you had the Transcend, and has it been dependable? Thanks.

As soon as I studied the design of the Transcend StoreJet I knew this was the hard drive I wanted! Small enough to fit in my shirt pocket - drop tested, anti-shock, what more could I ask for? Well, there's the rub. I assumed that Transcend had also designed a hard drive that would function properly. They didn't! The software that I had to download from their website never functioned properly, even after three email exchanges with one of their tech's. In addition to the software bugs, it has one more major flaw: after the initial backup, I expected it to only backup the new data that had been added to my docs. But Transcend wants to do a complete backup of everything, everytime, thus duplicating what is already on the hard drive from all previous backups. Come on, Transcend, you can do better than this! I have been buying from Amazon for years now, and this was the first time I have ever returned a purchase!

With portable hard drives, there's always the risk that it will crash and burn later, but in my initial use of this product, I couldn't be more pleased.1) It easily plugged in to transfer files from mac to pc without any partition/conversion issues.2) It does NOT require a power cord to be plugged in, just using the USB powers it while you're using it.3) It's quite small and convenient in size.4) Seems very sturdy.I noted other people complain about the software, but i have no interest in that, I'm just using it to manually back up and transfer files.I had previous bought a 1 TB Western Digital portable HD. WD requires a power cord to be plugged in and it's much larger and less convenient. Also, it rejected copying from my mac and only worked to back up my pc since I used the pc first. I wish I had found this product before I bought the WD hard drive.Highly recommended.

Let me start off by saying this is a fantastic external hard drive. It performs admirably, it's dead silent, and it's durable. It's cheaper than the competing LaCie 'durable' drive. The only issue was that it didn't perform how I wanted it to (I read online my car's entertainment system has problems reading drives larger than 250 GB [I ordered the 500]), so I'm just using it as a regular old external hard drive. It's getting the job done with no complaints. I just wish it was a 7200 RPM drive rather than a 5400 RPM drive for the sake of transfer speeds, but I can always upgrade it later if need be. If you're hard on your gear, and you want a cheap, high-capacity external hard drive, this is your product. However, with the new version that has USB 3.0 Transcend 640 GB 2.5-Inch USB 3.0 Military-Grade Shock Resistance Portable External Hard Drive for Mac and PC TS640GSJ25M3 and seperate power/data cables provides a little bit more 'future proofing', and it's still backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

I'm writing this review literally 5 mins after my drive fell on my foot ... not the ground, now the shock proof enclosure is ruined. And its the second one to go bad. I will stick to Western Digital, my old passport as been through a lot more and survived. This is a piece of crap and I will never purchase anything from Transcend again.
