I bought this new less than a year ago. It had problems reading certain CD's right off the bat. It always had issues with the 6-disk random shuffle. It would often skip two or three of the disks completely when fully loaded in the random shuffle mode. It now will not read or play any CD. Spend a $100 more and buy a better player. This did not even last 1-year.

I don't typically take the time to write product reviews, but I also rarely feel as frustrated as I do right now.
I purchased this CD player in March 2008. Six months later it stopped working. Onkyo gives you a one-year service warranty and advised me to take it to the nearest repair facility, which turned out to be about 45 minutes away from me.
It took the repair people 2 months to fix this unit. They had to order three rounds of parts, and basically rebuilt the entire unit at a cost that well exceeded the original purchase price. Fortunately, the warranty covered the expense.
Unfortunately, the unit broke again a week later.
I tried calling the original retail store for an exchange, but they referred me back to Onkyo.
An Onkyo Service Manager refused to take back the unit or offer any compensation. He said I needed to go through three rounds of service repairs before they would offer an exchange. When I explained that their service center had already gone through three order of parts and still couldn't deliver a working unit, he said there was nothing more he would do.
I'm not the kind of consumer that gets upset easily and makes unreasonable demands. But after all the hassle I've been through with this product, I feel Onkyo should offer me an exchange. I have several other Onkyo components and am otherwise happy with their performance. However after this ordeal, I'm inclined to find a different product maker.

I bought this component initially because I wanted to upgrade from a single cd player to a multiple disk unit. I picked Onkyo because I already had their Amp and dual cassette deck units, and they integrate the remote control functions through interface cabling connections between units. I got a real surprise when I found out that this changer does not support cd's created on personal computers. This was a major negative because I like to mix my own disks for personal use, and created from MP3 files purchased on the Internet. If you have a commercially produced music cd this unit provides all that the manufacturer claims, but to lose the capability of playing all pc generated cd's diminishes the utility of the unit. The users manual on page 8 notes " discs made on personal computers, including those of a compatible format, may not work properly in the DX-C390 because of incorrect settings in the disc burning software." This is ridiculus since pc generated discs play just fine in almost every cd player on Earth, including the player that this DX-C390 replaced. I have had very good results from other Onkyo equipment and find this lack of complete utility in this cd player very disappointing. If you do not plan to play pc generated cd's in this player I recommend you buy it. If not, look for something else that will play all cd media, not just some of it.

Stay Away from this one. This is my first review on Amazon and I just wanted to let people know that my unit froze up at the first year mark as other people have posted. Obviously there is a design flaw and I would stay away from this machine. It stopped working and will not open. I am not even going to try to get it fixed or repaired. Very disappointed in Onkyo.

Onkyo is a true original Japanese electronics giant and they have never let their customers down as evidenced by this unit. The DXC390 is truely magic to use and delivers beautiful clear music through it's companion receiver. HDMI at it's best.

After having this CD player for about 11 months, it started switching itself on at random times. I changed the surge protector/power bar it was connected to and made sure none of my remote control devices was creating the problem. Once the surge protector was changed the program disappeared for about a week or two, only to resurface. Now the device won't even switch on. No other device connected to the surge protector (ADM tuner, Yamaha cassette player, Acurus amp, Teac turntable, Terk antenna) has developed any problems over the same period. A Lemon.

In a word, sound quality (OK, two words). If you have anything other than the most basic, low-end audio system, you will hear the difference in sound quality when listening to a CD on the Onkyo versus a DVD player. Highs are crisp, bass is solid without being muddy.
The unit itself is solid, and offers the ability to hold 6 CDs (and shuffle play). The changer works well -- no glitches so far after a few weeks of heavy use. Nice styling with an easy to see display. The buttons on the unit are a bit hard to see, but you'll quickly figure out what controls what.
The remote is not great, but decent. Good range so you can control disks from across the room. The buttons are rather small and don't provide much tactile feedback. I'm using this with an Onkyo receiver, so it can take advantage of the Onkyo interface (i.e., power up the CD player and the receiver automatically powers up as well and changes the input to CD). Only two cables to connect -- an optical out and the Onkyo interface cable.
The size is somewhat imposing (both height and depth). As other reviewers have mentioned, check the size specs before you buy to make sure it fits into the cabinet/rack you want to use.
Very happy with the performance, and find this to be an excellent value. Well worth the price!!

I've had this Onkyo model for about a year now and I deliberately waited this long to do a review as I had heard that for some buyers, it took a few months for things to go awry and so I wanted to be sure I thoroughly "studied" mine before I gave my opinion. As it's been some time now and I have played literally hundreds of cds on this thing, I have to say that I am very pleased with its performance. My version has an on/off switch as well as a standby mode and so I'm satisfied that I don't waste electricity if I don't want to stay on standby mode.
Although there isn't a headphone jack, I'm not too bothered as I have a headphone jack on the TEAC amplifier that I connected this thing to and also as I rarely listen to headphones except when I'm on the go (through my MP3 player), I wasn't too concerned about this absent feature unlike others who have complained about it. I like the 6 cd disc changer and the fact that I can remove cds while one of them is still playing and I feel the look of the set is very classy and cool especially the "night light" which you'll have to see for yourself to know what I mean.
My Onkyo is connected through a TEAC amplifier using an optical digital out which is subsequently connected to 5 surround Robertson speakers which allows me to listen to my cds a number of different ways although I personally prefer to set it at stereo mode and hence using only the front 3 speakers. Prior to my getting this set, I had a Sony microcompo set which I thought had good sound qualities and when that finally conked out after about 5 years, I tried using my Philips DVD player for my cds but the sound just didn't cut it for me.
I decided to spend a little on a standalone, dedicated cd player and after doing some research online, I decided to give this Onkyo a chance and boy was the difference like night and day! Don't let anyone tell you that your DVD player is good enough if you are an audiophile or into great music as a hobby like I am. All my cds sounded like they were given a new lease of life and I finally felt I was truely doing justice to my speakers when it came to my cds. I'm convinced now that you don't have to spend thousands on a sound system as this Onkyo with optical digital out gets you great sound from your cds and at a much lower price. I have to say that for what you get out of it, this is truly great value for money and I hope to continue enjoying my cds with this system setup for many years to come. Many of my cds that sounded terrible before now sound very good through the Onkyo. This product shows that you don't have to splurge to enjoy good quality sound from your cds.

I purchased a new unit over 4 years ago and since that time it has performed flawlessly. The unit is solidly built - the only problem may be its size. It is quite deep. The carousel tray operates very smoothly and you can open it up and change CD's while one CD is playing. The remote has always functioned perfectly as well.
I have used both the analog and digital outputs (both optical and digital coax) and have had no problems.
Perhaps the latest production units have skimped on quality or something but the one I have had for over 4 years has never given me any problems whatsoever.

Everything was going fine until we hit the one year mark. Now, it doesn't work at all. I turn to the Onkyo support site to learn that all but two of their products carry and two-year parts and service warranty - and this is one of those two. Why? I guess my story is the reason.

My old Technics turntable CD changer recently died. I purchased it back in the early 1990's. Since I had an Onkyo receiver, I decided to try out this Onkyo turntable CD changer. While it is a good and reliable product, it didn't really stand out from other CD changers I have seen and heard. Some people have remarked that when they bought this new CD changer that they could hear a real improvement in the sound quality of their music CDs. It sounded the same to me as my old Technics. No better. No worse. I would think in about 15 years they would have been able to make it sound better. My speakers are very high quality and if it had been better, I would have heard it. Additionally, my old Technics had a unique feature that seems to have disappeared from turntable CD changers. It could play the first track from each CD, then the second track and so on. My wife and I really liked this feature. While the Onkyo does support 6 CDs, I would have preferred to have had this style of sequential play. This is a good CD changer, but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd. In Onkyo's defense, this is a good CD changer but I doubt many, if any CD changers stand out from the crowd these days. CD changers are not cutting edge technology anymore. Most are pretty much the same and no one seems to be doing much to make one better from another.

My Onkyo DXC390 6 Disc CD player was easy to set up - is easy to use - nice to listen to. Even priced right! Looks nice - matches my tuner and they fit well together. Exactly what I was looking for and have had no problems with it (that's unusual for me!).

I was very annoyed to discover that there is no memory button on the front.To program the play list you have to use the remote-very fiddley.Don't loose the remote!Going through a cdrom and programing is clunky , hit and miss.Never let an engineer design the user interface--as usual.Why by a 6 cd changer thats a pain the in A to program.No memory for the programed input either , so dont turn off the machine.
The housing is very deep-a couple of feet.Since its 6cd it cant be helped.
2 stars for such an egregious error in the programing interface.

I've given this poor machine intensive, 16/24 hs usage since I bought it, and I only had to take it to the repair shop once. The laser broke down, repair wasn't cheap, but I suppose it happens with all brands. Thus, I don't take any "stars" for that.
Support for not very well known brands (in the developing world) like Onkyo is absent, but thankfully Sony services can fix them properly. "Made in Japan" :)!
I like the fact of being able to change most CDs while listening, the sound quality is grea, maybe the opening slot for the CD tray could have a tighter door for not letting any dust in, but, as usual, Onkyo just delivers.
The RCA connections made some noise some time ago, it just ruined everything... After hours of tampering and changing of amplifier, cables, speakers, I made sure it was it, opened it (there's not much to be seen), then handmade some "guide" for the cable not bending and voila, the noise went away.
I'm sure it would have taken less time for a tech-savy user, but it did break some "romantic moments"... That's why I took 1 star.

I purchased this unit 2 years ago. You would expect a product from Onkyo to be reliable for a long time. I had to repeatedly take the unit in for repair during the warranty period. It lasted one year after the warranty ended with very little use. From this point on, I will only purchase receivers made by Onkyo.

I have had Onkyo stereo equipment for over 20 years and have nothing but good things to say about it. I was dreading having to hook up this new piece when my OLD CD player bit the dust but it was so easy, I just unplugged the old one and plugged in the new. The sound was so fantastic I really could not believe it. I cannot even imagine how great it would be with better speakers. If any other component goes bad I will definitely go with Onkyo again. By the way, the price was great also!

Bought this unit brand new in early January. Worked fine, no problems. Now not even 3 months later it appears to be dead. Frozen up. Can not open the tray which I have 6 cd's in.I just cant believe a brand new cd player would last less than 3 months.UNBELIEVABLE.

I've had this for a little over a year now. It is a POS! No response to remote or manual controls! Wakes you up in the middle of the night when it comes on by itself! Don't buy! It is a POS! Invest in some other brand.

The unit failed after around 9 months of light use. It basically froze up and wouldn't play, eject or respond to any commands. Sent it back for repair under warranty and didn't receive it back for 3 months. Worked ok for maybe 10 hours of use, now failed again. Won't even power on. I give up and will order a Marantz CC4001.

The product was delivered as advertised - with manual and (unused) remote. The changer works flawlessly and the unit offers surprisingly good sound for the price - even better than the more expensive 1-disk unit it replaced. Works equally well with commercial and computer-made CDs. Two very small caveats: (1) it's big (though smaller than others in its price range) and barely fits into my cabinet (I had to loosen the rear cover to keep the cables from being crushed against the back) - measure first (or cut a hole in the back)! (2) the control buttons are well placed but it's hard to read their small labels to operate the unit (fortunately, the bottons are easy to memorize). I highly recommend this unit.

This product performs as advertised. I did have some issues with MP3 discs hanging the system. The unit is extremely large, I had to cut a hole in the back of my component box to fit the unit.
