I purchased this item in May of 2006 and found it to be a good CD player. However, in the third year of its life, the DX-C390 began to turn itself on its own. I would turn off the CD changer only to find, minutes later, that it would again turn itself on without human intervention.
When I returned from a week vacation, I found the CD changer in the play mode. It played constantly 24/7 for the entire week and the player was hot to the touch. I feel this is a definite fire safety hazard and will report this to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

I have 2 of these players and love them both. They have always played all commercial and cd-r audio discs for me but what's even better is the mp3 disc ability which seems to be difficult to find. I have approximately 30 hours of music with approx 5 hr of music on each mp3 disc which will play at random... it's awesome. I do think it is noisy when changing discs but mine are located inside a cabinet so don't notice that. Excellent value for the price!

We bought this in March 2008 -- it only lasted until mid-2010, about two years, with very light usage. I would not recommend this player.

It looks good on the surface but looks are deceiving. This wasn't very heavily used in our household but the first part we had to replace six months after purchase was the imaging module. That took the player out for more than a month while we waited for a part and then the repair person could not exactly match the original manufacturer's part. Now it's stopping in the middle of songs, turning off and on by itself and has once reported some kind of error code on the front pannel though after a short wait started working again.
Don't waste your money on this piece of junk IMHO. Your experience may varry.

While I like Onkyo and I think the products are made to last, I'm baffled by how poorly the DX_C390 6-disc CD changer operates. It is incredibly slow as it cycles from song to song (it feels like it take about 30 seconds per track), and it's especially frustrating when the changer sticks on a track that doesn't exist: it's common that the changer stalls out on what will read "track 99" on the display (when obviously such a track does not exist). As one other reviewer noted, this isn't due to the poor condition of the disc or a burned copy -- it does this with new, store bought discs.
I'd recommend going with a different brand and model if you're looking for a hassle-free disc changer for at home listening.

My first Onkyo 6 Disc CD Changer died in March of 2011. It had played music without interruption for 19 years. What a great piece of equipment! Since then, I have ordered two new CD changers in the past month (March 2011)and neither one of them compares to the first. There are a number of issues with the new version. They do a poor job of playing CDs that are copies of original CDs. They stop in mid song and quit playing. Then mysteriously moves to the last song on the CD. We have no clue what makes the machine do this. It must be possessed! Finally, on some CDs, when the last song has played, the changer will not switch to the next CD. We are totally bummed out by this. The overall machine doesn't have the same quality as the old model and appears to be of cheaper materials.

The sound on this when i hooked it up was great. I have an Onkyo reciever so I ignored the large amount of bad reviews. I am an onkyo fan and do remain one. THis is not the CD player you are looking for. AS I said it worked, looked and sounded great; for a day. Then the tray stopped opening and closing correctly. Specifically, it stopped closing and playing CD's. Back to amazon immediatey...which by the way, with UPS pick up, is five stars for amazon!! Great return service. I am going to try the Yamaha, i know they make a good product!! And for the record; For those of you that think single function CD players are obsolete due to DVD players; think again!! I will get back to you on the Yamaha. I have a feeling I will be very happy!!

This CD player stopped working after a year and half of occasional use. I had owned the previous model which was great and lasted about 10 years but looks like Onkyo quality has gone downhill. Google problems with this model and you'll find what I've experienced - machine is stuck on Standby and will decide once in a while to work. If you do want to take a chance on this player, I urge you to get the extended warranty since you will need it. Stay away if you can. If you can't, be prepared for when it stops working. Good luck.

I bought the DX-390 about 1.5 years ago. My use has been minimal. Recently, it started to turn itself on and the changer will not eject. You have to disconnect the power source to get the unit to shut off. I was going to try to get it serviced, then I read the reviews - many people are experiencing the same issue. I think that I would be letting myself in for a load of pain with no positive resolution. Anyone have suggestion on a good 5 or 6 cd unit ???

I have two of these cd players and can, thus, attest to the complete hit-or-miss quality as to build between units. One operates perfectly without a single flaw, even after eight months of regular operation. The other has a poltergeist inside of it that often prohibits the changer from playing one disc after another or letting random play play more than three or four songs before stopping and occasionally making an unfortunate clunk in the physical rotation of the cd platter (although, it has yet to fail a year and a half after heavy play). Nevertheless, I would readily purchase another, without a single hesitation. Why? The sound quality cannot be beat in any price-comparable units. The rest of my audio gear is high-end, specialized equipment. Cds I do not bother with audiophile gear because they function as background music, not for close-listening enjoyment. But, I know what good sound is and I still want it to sound good. The Onkyo changer has a sound quality that rivals entry level audiophile players that begin at the $500 mark. So, if you want superior sound cheaply, take the risk with this player.

I purchsed the Onkyo DXC390 CD player as a replacement for an older player that did not play any CD's except original recordings. The Onkyo reads and plays everthing, CD-R, CD-RW, mp3 files, etc. and it sounds fantastic. I read reviews on other players, and they all make fantastic claims, but the Onkyo really seems to live up to the hype. I would definitly recommend this player to a friend or anyone who likes music and is looking for a hassle-free, great sounding CD Player.

Simply put, the unit stopped working (EE PROM error), after only occasional use, in 18 months. All factory reset solutions were tried - to no avail. I suggest looking at other brands/products.

I wonder how many music lovers like me are there. I replaced an old CD player with a DVD player. The DVD player never consistently played purchased or burned CDs without mistracking. This changer hasn't skipped once on any of my discs, and I swear the sound is better than my DVD player. Plus, the changer lets me line up discs so I don't have to change for at least a couple of days at a time. My one complaint: the R1 cable is not long enough, since the changer's input is on the right rear but my receiver's is on the left rear.

Cds do not stay in position. Drawer often opens with cds scattered about.

The product works just like it should. No complaints, whatsoever. The only thing that concerns me a little is the durability of the CD changing mechanism, and my concern cannot be answered after such a short period of usage, but the overall feeling of the changer is very strong, so I should not be worried about this - at least more than with any other this type of device. All in all, great bang for the buck! Five stars out of five.

Product does not work (CDs are not read) and I do not see any service listed in Brazil for Onkyo. It was sold as new, not as refurbished, but it had a bump on the side. What action can I take?

I'ts funny how you HAVE to give one star in your reviews! This does NOT deserve a star period! Like many others on here, I have had nothing but problems with this unit! It will NOT play any cd's at all. I bought this new from Amazon and will never buy another Onkyo brand product again. Oh, and Amazon sent me another unit, and guess what? Same problem. Do NOT but this product!

This CD player was just what I was looking for. It is attractive, easy to use, and holds multiple CD's. While it is large in size compared with a lot of electronics, it fits into the space our previous 5 disc player occupied. All the features work, and there have not been any problems with the rotation and playing of the CD's. This is a very nice multiple CD player at a reasonable price.

Bought this product based on other reviews and to replace an older Onkyo CD player that was 20 years old. As stated in other reviews, the only negative that I have experienced is the time delay between songs on the random play mode. Other than that it is a perfect replacement for my old player. I would highly recommend this unit.

Got this today, hooked up optical connection to my Sony 7.1 100 watt per channel receiver; 20% louder and clearer than playing mp3 on DVD player. Extremely happy about this purchase. Amazon by far lowest price on the internet. Great!

Just over a year old and just out of warranty my purchased-new DX-C390 started with intermittent unresponsive controls, whether at the panel or remote. Within a few months it finally died, no control response, no power, no nothing. I saw it coming however (and after reading all the unfavorable reviews) and managed to get my cd's out of it. After reading of Onkyo's lackluster customer service record on this unit I'm tempted to toss this thing in the trash instead of spending anymore money on it, not to mention the frustration I'm apparently in for. There are too many other options. Be warned, do not spend your hard-earned money on this garbage.

The other morning, the unit suddenly came on by itself. No surge -- nothing else was effected, the lights didn't even dim. Came on, but won't function by either the remote or the buttons on the face of the unit. Gone. Should have paid attention to all the poor reviews. A little under a year old. Heck, I've had off brand units last for five years...

Most of my audio-video equipment is made by Sony, but I purchased this particular CD player made by Onkyo for one specific reason: It is the only carousel CD player I could find with the ability to shuffle play mp3 files burned to CD-R disks. I have about 1300 mp3 files/songs in my music collection, and am able to fit the entire collection on 6 CD-R's. Rather than to listen to a particular album or several albums at a time, my preference is to shuffle or randomly play all the songs in my collection.
The Onkyo can fit 6 CD's on its carousel, so I can randomly play my entire collection without ever having to change CD's. It plays the mp3 CD-R's flawlessly, the sound if fine, and the unit has not needed any service since buying it 2 years ago. What more can one ask for? Oh yes, the price is a true bargain as well.
My only gripe - and it is minor - is that there is about a 20 second time span between songs when in random play. I'm sure that if I had less disks and/or less mp3 files on each disk, the wait time between songs would be shorter when in random mode.
I presume that to accomodate 6 CD's on its carousel (most carousels hold 5 CD's), its depth is rather long from front-to-back (17 inches). So make sure it will fit on your shelf, cabinet, or table before purchasing it.

I like the display ( Artist, Album, Song title, Folder Title) It plays the cd's that it will play fine, however I found the following limitations: 1. It will not play cd's burned with a lightscribe burner all the way through. 2. There are some mp3 downloads (from amazon) that it will not play) I asked amazon agents to at least advise their customers of this, but no luck. 3. it doesn't seem to recognize sub-folders. If you knew these limitations it would not be so frustrating.

This is a nice CD changer, which unfortunately may become extinct thanks to the advent of MP3 players and the like. I like the green light accent in the front; pretty cool. This unit is fairly light, compared to other makes -- not sure if that's a good thing. You need to buy a good pair of audio wires to get clear fidelity out of the unit, even if you have a high-end receiver. (The ones that come with the unit won't give you the full range of sound.) Great price. Great customer service from the third-party seller.

I do not have a very high priced system, because of my reduced budget so I try to get the most out of my money. I did had a Harman Kardon system paired with a LX500 JBL speakers, but after some time the Haman just died and repair was almost as expensive as buy a new one. So I got an Onkyo TX-SR340, a low budget AV receiver, and I was looking for some CD player to pair with. After some research I found this Onkyo cd player and let me tell you that was a very very nice surprise. The TX-SR340 with this CD player make a very nice couple, using a 30Dlls coaxial cable and my JBL speakers this one sound very very nice with just 500-600Dlls invest (receiver plus cd player). The bad thing about this one is that you will notice the difference about the quality of your recording right away. I do have some iTunes Mozart operas and really sound bad, compared with the real CD iTunes just sound like radio broadcasting, but Deutsche Grammophon MP3 sound very nice...at least Bach chello sonatas Just one word about MP3, I do have problem with the Onkyo to read Deutsche Grammophon MP3, maybe its a problem related with encoding...not sure, Coltrain re-issues from BlueNote sound great and Haydn first symphony is just a pleasure. So if your CD player budget is below 300Dll go for this one, otherwise go for the Onkyo above 500Dlls...but be sure about paired with a very nice receiver. So 5 stars because of the great sound with just 200Dlls, doesn't matter about MP3 problems, but if that is an issue with you I do recommend to play your MP3 in the store before to buy.

Although love my mp3 players and music, roots go back to vinyl and then of course cd.(i.e., listening to music through quality headphones or in front of my large JBL's) My trusty old pioneer muti-disc finally died. Researched a replacement, and selected the Onkyo due to the positive reviews, and the 6 (over typical 5) disc capability. Have always respected the Onkyo name (although never owned a product), and appears unlike many other 70's or so brands, remains a 'Hi-Fi' company.
Performance of player has been flawless, and build quality high (blue light over disc tray cool too! (and can be turned off if desired). As many others have said, it is BIG!. However not an issue in my case, and slid into my little component tower (barely!).
Highly recommend if looking for a quality multi-disc player!

This is the second Onkyo CD player my Grandparents have owned, and also the second Onkyo POS to die in 3 years. I've had good luck with my Onkyo surround sound system, but after doing a little reading on how Onkyo is treating its customers with this CD player, I have to say I'll never purchase another unit of theirs again. I understand stuff happens, but FIX IT when it does happen! The thing just goes haywire. Doesn't recognize CD's, the Pause light keeps going on/off randomly, it turns itself on, shows EEPROM-XXX:XX messages on the front, doesn't eject the tray half of the time, etc. WORTHLESS! My old 25 disc Pioneer changer that is all of 10+ years old is still working just fine. Guess I know what brand to recommend for her next purchase. Goodbye Onkyo.

I purchased the DXC390 unit in July 08 to compliment my Onkyo AV Receiver. At first all seemed well, but in April of this year the unit mysteriously turned on by itself, remained on and locked so that the carousel tray would not eject. I sent it to the warranty authorized service facility to repair. In about a week, it was returned to me and seemed to be fine again. This July just 2 days prior to my warranty running out, the same exact problem happened again. I got in touch with the customer rep at Onkyo, explaining the problem and voicing my concern as to why the problem was not fixed properly the first time. All I was able to get out of him was that my only solution was to send it back for repair, shipping it again at my expense, and that the only way Onkyo would consider replacing my unit was if the occurence happened a third time. Well I did the math, and, the cost of sending it back to the repair facility was approaching almost what I had spent for the unit to begin with. I decided to cut my losses and buy another CD player from another manufacturer. I am quite upset with the lack of interest and consideration displayed by Onkyo in this matter, and did not expect this from a supposedly quality electronics manufacturer, was I ever mistaken!
Needless to say, I will never consider buying another Onkyo product and will discourage anyone else who may be considering buying an Onkyo product not to do so.

I bought a new Onkyo X- C390 early on March 2009,so I don't give a continously use to this CD Player...Maybe I play 30 times in 9 months, and three days ago, this item was absolutly out of control...First : the device turn it ON, by itself...And I can't turn OFF..SECOND: I contact the [...], so they said ,I have to reset the device, pushing the STOP and ON/STANDBY Buttoms at same time...NOTHING ,the device gone wild, show up numbers, letters, ligths, everywhere on the front panel...So i on't know whats Wrong with this piece of crap...I prefer to buy another one, that send to the technician in my town, 'cause if I send to the Onkyo center,I have to pay a lot of money to ups, for delivering ( over 60 each,total $ 120 dollars) FOR REAL...THINK ABOUT THIS ITEM ,BEFORE YOU BUY IT...DON'T PUT YOUR MONEY IN THE CHINESE GARBAGE!!

This CD player was bought to replace a 5 disc Sony player I had been using. The Sony became less and less reliable in playing all selections when the player was in the random mode. This Onkyo player works great and is completely reliable in the random play mode. I would recommend it for anyone. Although nothing is said in the advertising about this unit coming with a remote, it does, and the remote has features not found on the old Sony remote. It's a great piece of equipment at at very fair price.

There seem like many reasons to like this CD player, which can play .mp3 data discs as well as conventional CDs. Additionally, both the user interface and the appearance are quite nice. My major complaint is that the unit I was shipped often exhibits playback punctuated with short periods of silence or refuses to play discs at all. This behavior seems independent of whether the disc is .mp3 or conventional.

Our complaint is that it started having serious problems about 6 months after we got it. It will suddenly stop playing, or, will pause for 2 or 3 seconds then continue. We like the 'random' feature, but that has completely stopped working.

Although I did buy his player a year and a half ago, I'd say I'd be lucky if I listened to 10 CD's on it in that time. I hadn't turned it on in 6 months or so and when I did so today, it just stayed on standy mode and wouldn't turn on. Nothing helped like unplugging it or trying to turn it on with the remote. Completely useless. I bought a new model too, not a refurbished one. This is the first Onlyo product I ever bought, and it will be the last. Now I remember why I always stuck to Sony players.

Bought this product in June 2008, and had good service from it...until September 2009. The unit refused to come on with the remote or manually. Pulling out and reinserting the power plug resulted in the unit coming on, which allowed me to get all but 1 of my CD's out. The unit, however, will not play the CD that has remained inside. I expected a better product from Onkyo, but this has definitely been a bug disappointment. I certainly would not recommend this product. Heed this warning, and those from the other reviewers who had problems with it. I should have paid attention to the poor reviews, but instead, I took a chance and got a product for < $150, to use for 15 months...Works out to roughly $10/month rental of an Onkyo DXC390

Великолепно
Ordered subject player and received it as promised. It was a new unit in the factory box. Connected it to my speaker system and it works great. It performed super and I am well pleased with it.
