I own both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. I have played several games for both systems (simpsons, call of duty, need for speed) and in all three instances I prefer the Xbox versions of the games. I can honestly say it is much more fun to play the Wii games because of the level of interactivity, but all of the games are much 'lighter' adaptations for the Wii. Since the Wii doesn't read discs with as much information on them, the games end up resembling the Xbox versions, but with many extras trimmed off. By this I mean story lines are gone, options are absent, and the levels/worlds/stages are always lacking details.
Bottom line:
Wii is great for simple games (brain age, wii sports, etc. but if you are into games like forza, call of duty, etc. you best stick with another console.

However, after spending $400+ dollars and have yet to buy a game, I had to put the details in my head together to compare it to the monies spent on my XBOX 360 and equivalent equipment.
For starters, anyone purchasing the Wii simply because of the perception that it is cheaper better think again. I recommend purchasing the Wii for those folks who want to experience an entirely different take on video games, if you trust in the quality of Nintendo products and game franchises, as well as it obviously being kid-friendly.
However, when you do the comparative $ math, the XBOX 360 is actually on par with Wii. Here is what I spent for 360 vs. Wii and you'll see that it is a straight-out wash. Please note that I tried to keep an apples-to-apples comparison as much as possible:
XBOX 360 and an additional controller for a second player = $450. Special note: The XBOX 360 $400 model comes with a hard drive, and it's resident controllers and memory can handle the original XBOX games, as well as all XBOX Live Arcade games.
Wii base = $250,
Extra Wii-mote and nunchuck for second player= $60
2 GB SD memory card = $30
2 Wii Classic controllers to play virtual console games = $40
2 GameCube controllers which is a system requirement to play GameCube games = $50
GameCube memory which is another system requirement to play GameCube games. You can not use SD memory = $20
Grand Total = $450
Other things to consider: If you don't have a wireless router, then you either need to get one or purchase the DS/Wii Wifi USB Adapter to hook your box up to a LAN cable = another $40. On the other hand, in defense of Nintendo, if you wanted to go wireless instead of a LAN cable connection on XBOX 360 you would have to spend about $90 for the Wireless adapter. In addtion, if you want to see a progressive scan picture with the Wii, you need to spend another $30 for component cables, something that comes straight out of the box with a XBOX 360.
As some folks already know, the Wii's graphics are currently 480p max and only capable of Dolby Pro Logic II sound. XBOX 360 can reach 1080i (1080p with additional hardware) and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
In summary, if you only want to go with one system, you have to choose between what you are interested in with a next-gen system. If you want real next-gen graphics and sound, I recommend the XBOX 360 (or PS3 I guess, but I don't have one of those yet). If you are looking for an innovative way to play games and love the Nintendo franchise games, then go with the Wii - if you can find one that is.........

GAMES:
The system is fun and different. I've played Wii sports, supermonkey ball, Excite truck, rayman, elbits, Madden, and trauma center (never have been a huge zelda fan, so waiting to rent.) I wouldn't rate any of these games higher than a 7 out of ten. I really wish excite truck had online play as it would have raised the replayability a little. The best thing about the wii is that the games aren't just a "graphical" upgrade. They try to get you involved. My favorite so far is wii sports. I turned trauma center off after about 15 minutes because I have the DS version and it didn't seem fun to me anymore, and man does the dialoge get long. I haven't used the virtual console yet because paying 5 dollars for a game that I'll play for a few minutes is way to much. So as far as games go, there aren't any (unless your a zelda fan) that feel that polished and worth the 50 dollar price tag, in my opinion. Before buying I'd recommend checking a game review site such as IGN.com or Gamespot.
Controller:
I like the new controller but don't like have to buy a wiimote 40 dollars and the the nunchuck 20 dollars. Most games require both so if you want to play multiplayer you have to buy at least one extra set. The system does come with one complete set. I enjoyed the new controller because its different. I don't want three new consoles with almost the same exact input device. I'm glad they changed it up.
Backwards compatible Gamecube:
Excellent. It's as easy as pie. Pop the top cover and plug in you wave bird and cube memeory card and your good to go. For anyone looking to buy a gamecube I'd say just wait till you can buy a wii. Not only will you be able to play the new games but you'll be able to play every gamecube game. They really did this feature right.
The internet browser:
Is currently free and works well with the wiimote. It wasn't as painfull as using my psp. You can easily navigate through menus and zoom in on pictures. The weather channel also works well showing up to a 5 day forcast, but if you already have a computer this is just a "neat feature".
I know a lot of people are going to hate me for this comment, but right now the wii isn't a must have gaming machine. Why, because it's only two months into the launch and the game line up is very meak. This is to be expected and as wario ware, super mario, metroid come out we'll see exactly what the system has to offer. For those of you dieing to get your hands on one, relax. ours has been sitting for the last 3 days untouched. The newness wears off and your left with one or two games.
Again these are my OPINION's, I think a lot of the people who reviewed the system on here did so within a day or so of turning it on for the first time. Everyone loves that new car smell. To me its always about the games, not who sells it but how much fun it is to play. I not an english teacher or a student so if you don't like my spelling/grammer to bad I already graduated and you can't take my degree.

My son can continue to play all his old Gamecube games on the Wii, so I don't feel like we wasted all that money collecting games for a Gamecube and then have to switch over.
It was easy to plug in and get going. I didn't understand the setting up the Mii and using the Wiimote at first from afar. My son (6 years old at the time) knew what to do with it right away, so I just let him go at it. Eventually, I did play and it wasn't so difficult. I don't think that the Wiimote is as intuitive as they say, but it's not hard to learn.
What got me hooked is the Wii Fit and My Word Coach and then I discovered there are a bunch of Wii software (I'm not sure I'd describe them as games) for adults or older kids.
I don't have to worry much about what title software my son gets when he goes shopping for games. They are all pretty safe, especially when compared with other gaming systems. What a great buy the whole family can enjoy.

The Wii has great potential because I believe it is beginning the path that videogames need to take. Videogames have the potential of easily transitioning into more personal experiences, like in "Minority Report." I gave Nintendo the benefit of the doubt but as time passed I realized they were not attempting to make a splash, only a ripple.
After a year, regret set in. If I could some how keep my virtual console games for perhaps the Wii2 or 3, I would sell this thing in a heartbeat!!!!! I periodically turn it on bi-monthly and the only thing that mildly interests me is the Vote Channel. At least it collects dust efficiently!!

Our Wii is new. My arm is very sore from playing tennis for the same hours I used to sit nearly motionless with a computer game. This is a good thing for someone my age. Finally! Something to do with my retirement when it's rainy and windy and cold and I am stuck inside! I love it. We only have the sports game now but I am going to look into others. Anything that is best played standing up and moving around!
I have no complaints. I know that the novelty will wear off eventually, but that's true for almost everything in life. We were on the fence about buying this system for a long time--if you are as well, just do it. You will be glad you did.

On the other hand, the Wii has terrible graphics when compared to the Xbox 360 or PS3. The graphics are not "next gen" and are comparable to the Gamecube. All that said, the Wii can be very fun though, like Wii sports for example...for a few hours...When I was playing it, I just kept thinking, "I can't wait until they make these sports games with better graphics and better gameplay". You aren't given the option to field in the Wii baseball for example, which was disapointing.
With having and playing a Wii, another problem is going to be the height of which your TV is to your eyes. When I stood up to play the Wii Sports, (which you really need to stand up to play to get the fun out of it) I was looking down a little at my TV, because my TV is not eye level when I stand up, which caused me to have my neck pretty much bent down the whole time I was playing, which was flat out annoying and uncomfortable. I'll have to somehow prop up my TV, so it sits higher up. What a pain...
As a gamer, just having the Wii, doesn't cut it. Thats why I own a Xbox 360. I want "next gen" graphics and a very good on-line play setup that the Wii lacks! Wii has on-line play, but compared to Xbox's "Live", its extremely primitive.
3 Stars Overall, for being a very fun console and the wiimote motion sensing is very intuative and new for a game system, but the Wii is lacking "next gen" graphics, and does not have a very good on-line play setup like Xbox's "Live" or PS3's "Home". In no way is the Wii worth $250.
Edit: I've owned one for years now, it collects dust, end of story.
