I'm an IT person with over 20 years experience working with PCs. As to be expected my home is wired or rather very wireless with over 9 devices that connect to the internet one way or the other (and the number is always increasing it seems).I already owned two Netgear WNA1100 802.11n adapters and and I was happy to order two more from Amazon. I downloaded the drivers from the Netgear website, never looked at the drivers on the disk. Long story short they worked great and with no issues with Windows 7 32bit and 64 bit but this is not where the story ends, I got my best performance after I optimized my wireless network. In some cases I was able to double my connection speeds.Let me share how I optimized my wireless network:a) I used the websites speedtest.net and pingtest.net to determine my internet connection speed (use a wired connection to the router for this). This is your REAL baseline, it is very hard for a wireless connection to beat a shielded wired connection to a router. If your wireless connection equals the speed of your wired connection you are good and probably as good as you are going to get.b) Find a wireless channel that is not in used near your house. The default channel in most routers is 6 and you have a choice from 1 to 11. Use the Netgear Network connectivity software and find an unused channel and test again. You will need access to your router settings for this. This is especially important if your neighbors are close like on apartments or townhouses. I have over 13 wireless networks in range of my house and using a channel that the others are not using was the best improvement I did to my wireless network.c) Move the Netgear WNA1100 802.11n to new locations. Moving the Netgear WNA1100 802.11n on top of the computer or another place on my desks helped increased speed in some cases by over 50%. Always test your speed after any change. To those people only looking at connection speeds to their router (looking for for the mythical 144 mbps); it matters little, why? I can connect at 144 mbps or at 65 mbps to my router but my internet connection is only 25 mbps (that is my case, even from work I get no more than 48 mbps on a commercial internet connection, speedtest.net ).Now, this MAY vary (maybe you have a SUPER fast internet connection) but let me say that the average internet speed in the US is from 10 to 12 mbps. Keep this in mind when trying to upgrade to a faster router, your bottleneck may actually be your provider and not your router (or your adapters). If it is Internet speed what you are looking for begin by evaluating what your internet provider is giving you.Note about the Netgear WNA1100 802.11n: This N adapter uses the 2.4 MHz band ONLY and depending on where you live this frequency might be too congested. Other N adapters (the N300 series) can run on the 5 MHz band (newer, faster, and less congested) but you will also need a router that supports the 5 Mhz. Also note that the 5 Mhz band has a shorter range than the 2.4 MHz band but it also faster (but will not give you faster speeds than a wired connection to your router. If you already run as fast as your wired connection using a wireless adapter you are probably at your best internet connection speed already). Also note that many N capable devices (like iPhones) do not support the 5 Mhz band. Some routers (dual band) will let you run BOTH on the 5 MHz band and 2.4 MHz band at the same time.

When I received my product I was excited to get it hooked up so I could stop using my laptop as a network bridge to my non-wifi desktop. I pop this sucker in, grab the drivers through my existing connection on the bridge (which happened as soon as I plugged it in -- hooray Ubuntu!), then disconnect the bridge to let this adapter do its thing. It worked wonderfully! Didn't even skip a beat between connections so my workflow wasn't interrupted; however, it stopped working after about 10-20 minutes. I called Netgear and after being on the phone with idiots for slightly over an hour they told me that after the troubleshooting, it appeared that this product was faulty. Now, let me say that it is entirely possible that I got a "bad egg" out of the batch. I don't think I overloaded it, because if surfing the web, checking email, and instant messaging at the same time is too much for this thing then it's entirely useless to me anyway.I have since returned this product and have now purchased the (slightly more expensive/powerful) NETGEAR RangeMax WNDA3100 to see if I have any better luck on that front. I really wanted the economical WNA1100 (this one), but I just don't feel like potentially wasting yet more of my time fooling around with more failing products.

Hi,When deciding which adapter to buy, I read through all of the comments on Amazon. Despite the negative comments from people who could not make this adapter work on Windows 7, I decided to go for the WNA 1100. This was a big mistake. The driver worked well when first installed. However, whenever I rebooted the machine, the driver would fail. For a few weeks, I was able to solve the problem by disabling and then re-enabling the adapter, but this solution stopped working. At this point, the device is entirely nonfunctional. I have tried uninstalling completely and installing again. I have tried multiple versions of the drivers. I have connected the adapter to every single USB port on my machine. I'm not running any firewall or virus software that could conflict with the adapter.I have been forced to fall back to an old Belkin 802.11g adapter in order to connect my new computer to the home network. This requires me to configure the network as a mixed network, and it saps the network speed of all machines in the house. My iPad now connects to the network at twice the speed of my desktop because I'm using an old G-adapter on the desktop.I have been working with computers as a hobbyist, programmer, and professor for more than 25 years. This is one of the most maddening hardware-related problems I have ever encountered. It reminds me of the nightmare COM: port scenarios that we used to encounter when trying to activate modems and mice. The Netgear forums are next to useless, and the pain is compounded by the fact that some Windows 7 users encounter absolutely no problems. For the record, I am running a fully patched 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. Please don't repeat my mistake. When reading through the comments, I dismissed the criticisms and assumed that the naysayers were simply clueless. This adapter has been an enormous waste of time and I foolishly tossed the box when it arrived and am now unable to return it.I have owned many Netgear products over the years, and they all worked well. This product is a dismal exception to the rule. Wireless adapters should be plug-and-play. This adapter is hardly plug-and-play. Please take my advice and spend your money on a more deserving -- and less frustrating -- product.AaronUPDATE. I have found a partial solution to this problem. Instead of using the most recent Netgear drivers, I tracked down the original installation CD and discovered a "standalone drive" option. Managed to install the drivers and locate the adapter without interference from Netgear's "Smart Wizard." So far, it has maintained a connection through multiple reboots. Connection speeds seem erratic, but it is at least working. Despite the fact that I'm back up and running, I still encourage discerning consumers to consider comparably priced alternatives to this unit.

I've had this wireless network adapter around my household for several years now. It was on an XP machine which had problems with the ethernet adapter, so I went wireless. I ended up getting a USB to ethernet adapter for that computer. Now I use this wireless adapter on a Win7 machine, that is built to the hilt with performance hardware and also included a built in wireless network card. Long story short the built in wireless network card was getting a very weak signal connection to my old school g router, so I decided to give the old Netgear wna1100 WiFi adapter a go at it in my new computer. I disabled the built in wireless network adapter, plugged this adapter in with the range extender and connected to my router with 90% signal indicating I'm connected at 54mbps, my router's theoretical max for WiFi output. After trying network speed tests, I'm reliably receiving what I'm paying for from my ISP, 25/5 download/upload speeds. My last test showed 24mbps/5.5mbps.I'm happy with it. I can even stream HD video content no problems. Occasional slowdown or buffer, but only because other people connected to the wireless network are likely chewing up WiFi bandwidth.

Received this adapter, followed all the instructions for installation but without any luck. After a couple hours I gave up and called for tech support. Her English was poor but we moved on. We messed with it for some time until she told me I needed to download the updated version of the installation software (I am running XP professional). Thought how dumb that was, cannot get a connection to the internet yet was suppose to download new version (I understand the software that comes with it does not work). Kind of a catch 22 don't you think. Well as luck would have it I have a computer with a good internet connection and was able to get the updated software. After installing and un-installling several times we got it to work. Took about an hour and a half to get this done. Worked fine for a couple days and then decided it would not connect again. Took out the software and installed it again, went through the setup again and off and running for about a day. Did it all over again and once again worked well for about a day. You need to understand this is my wives computer and she is getting upset and who do they take it out on when they get upset? Finally took the thing out, unloaded the software and threw it all in the garbage where it belonged. Looking to find another one to order. In the meantime, hooked the wives laptop to a cable that is strung across the room. And that is my opinion of this product.Richard

I bought two of these adapters to update the b/g adapters in a couple of desktop computers in an effort to speed up my home network. My first disappointment was that neither system would ever attain better than a 65GHz connection, regardless of distance and/or lack of obstructions. My biggest disappointment was that, in less than 24 hours, both adapters began periodically vanishing from Windows Device Manager and had to be unplugged and reseated in order to be revived. A quick search of Netgear's support forums revealed that this is a common problem with this device that has never been corrected. Who needs that kind of irritation? There's a reason it's so cheap. Don't waste your time.

It is interesting to see the distribution of reviews for this product. Apparently, people either love or hate this wireless adapter. I am firmly situated in the camp of people who are very unhappy with this piece of equipment. My platform: Late 2011, core i7 desktop gaming machine running Windows 7x64. Router is a Linksys E100.My usage scenario: Have tried both cradle and directly plugging into the USB port.My symptoms: Several times a month, the adapter drops the signal and I'm forced to reboot the computer in order to establish a connection. It is the worst type of computer problem: inconsistent, persistent, and very difficult to replicate on demand. Ugh.I'm a computer hobbyist, and my family has a ridiculous number of machines in this house: a mac, four Windows laptops, a Windows desktop, and three iPads. None of the other devices in our house have a difficult time connecting to the network. None of the other devices in our house have problems maintaining a connection to the network. It is just this particular adapter. When I swapped in an older adapter, there were no connection problems. It is strange to me that people have had such good things to say about this piece of equipment. Perhaps there are different variations sold under the same product number and name? Or perhaps I just got a faulty unit? It's just barely functional enough to make it impossible to return the device, but this tiny adapter ranks among the top 5 most frustrating devices/gadgets that I have encountered in my life. (No small feat.)

I've been using a number of Wi-fi adapters for years as an IT technician on the road where getting a good connection is crucial, as well as just using it around the home. The adapter as well as its driver has been used in 4 machines using XP Pro, Vista Business and Windows 7. In all 4 machines, the adapter has worked flawlessly. It replaced a screwy Medialink which was very unreliable.I wish it had the sensitivity of my defunct Zonet adapter which had amazing sensitivity. The Netgear does well, but where the Zonet would sniff out signals 3 to 4 hundred meters away, the Netgear seems to be about half as good.Nonetheless, it's been a solid performer and that's what counts. I like it and will probably get another one soon.

I went with getting a Netgear adapter instead of an off-brand for a little cheaper because my router is Netgear. I'm glad! I am an online gamer, stream a lot of Netflix, and download a lot of torrents. I had this six-year-old Linksys adapter and it was going so sluggish that I couldn't actually use my Internet. This fixed it up. It took about five minutes to install, counting the amount of time it took me to take it out of the package. Reliable and fast connection. Super easy installation and exactly what I was looking for. Also, I'm about fifty feet away from my router with a couple of walls in between and at full signal! Hooray!

This is not a plug and play device as I initially thought. Setup took a while for me on my desktop machine, since my 64 bit Windows 7 PC couldn't recognize the drivers. This little adapter has a knack for picking up interference and losing a connection, even when I have 1 or 2 devices on my network.Works great if you just wanna stream some music while browsing the web. But if you want to get work done while simultaneously rendering video, be prepared for long load times, and DSL-like speeds.Still, for the price... can't really complain too much.

While installing a new power supply and graphics card to my new hp pavilion HPE series computer I accidentally severed the "wireless" internet wire inside of my computer. I was freaking out because I couldn't find out what it connected to or what it did; obviously I found out soon enough. Well I didn't have a lot of money at the time and got the best thing i could afford with a thorough search. After getting it I feel as if I could have gotten a lot better. First off the connection isn't all that great. My router is in the next room and I only have 4 bars. And I feel as if it was definitely faster on my older laptop. Another problem I have found that might just be my impatience is almost every time I turn off my computer, when I turn it back on, I have to disconnect and reconnect the USB for the computer to recognize it's attached. All I know is I am getting a much better replacement. I've had netgear before and gave it to my mom. Never asked why she got her own soon after. Now I know.

I bought this to attach the kids computer to the wifi and have had nothing but problems with it. The installation went find and it detected the unit and the network but after about an hour it drops the connection. It consistently drops the connection whether it's in use or not. Then in order to re-estabilsh a connection I have to unplug it from the computer and plug it back in. I have had nothing but heartache from any NetGear product. I replaced it on my computer with a Linksys and never have issues.

I'm not good with computers. I had an older Sony Vaio that I wanted to maybe use and needed a wireless card.I chose this device because my roommate has a Netgear wireless router upstairs and figured it would make things a bit easier. The laptop didn't recognize the software CD or the device itself when I installed it in the drive. My roommate (who is far better at this techno stuff than I am)tried for two hours and nothing happened. I'm not sure if the thing has a light on it that turns on when it's working, but the lightnever came on. I tried what another user suggested and just let the laptop find the device on it's own, but to no avail. So I basically bought this for nothing. I'm going to try an actual card-type wireless device and put it into the laptop that way. It's a good little laptop, clean and in great shape, but witout wi-fi, what's the use? Anyway, disappointed in this device.I'm sure it would work fine with a newer computer, though? *sigh* We even tried to install it into his new desktop and nothing happened. The light on the device didn't turn on and it just seems to be completely dead. Even though it was only $20, I wish I'd saved my money.

this adapter is picky about the routers it connects to. it works perfect with Netgear routers and some Linksys models. When connecting to other brands it keeps dropping the connection. I tried tweaking the settings to no avail. It even loses the connection when you configure a static IP. It only connects to other brands if they are G routers, then you lose the speed of the N types

I purchased this a few months ago to replace the wireless card in my desktop which suddenly stopped working. I don't know a whole lot about computers, but this was super easy to install and it's worked perfectly since then. I have my computer in the same room as the router, though probably about 15 feet away. I don't do anything that would require super fast internet speeds, but I do get frustrated with slow connections and that hasn't been an issue at all. Based on my experience, I would definitely recommend this adapter to someone looking for a quick, easy way to get online without having ethernet cables everywhere.

Just got an Acer Aspire One, dual core 64 byte bus, 4gb memory, 500gb HD, 7 HP for 299.00 and no shipping - a deal I couldn't pass up. Only two minuses: a 1ghz processor and an N wireless card that defaulted at 24mb (N router) and kept falling back to 5.5mb. Had the WNA1100 laying around from a previous experiment with N on my ancient Archos 10 netbook (which failed, the experiment, not the Archos) so I plugged it in, downloaded the driver and, wow, off to the races. Now connected at 65mb and no trouble at all with Sleep mode - adapter reboots almost instantly.Only word of caution, or an expression of common sense, turn off both your wireless card and Ethernet connection (unless you're using it, then it's too busy being an ethernet port to conflict with your wireless adapter. Strange, actually, because its sleep mode settings conflict with whatever wireless hardware you've got when not in use but the conflict disappears when you plug in a cable, even if the cable isn't connected to anything. Anyway, turning both off is just good housekeeping). So, five starsP.S. My router is an ATT Uverse NVG510 running at 12mb (real world, high 9's to 10.5mb download, .95mb upload) so, if you're using a home network, using a good router, speed might be better.Another P.S. - 64 isn't working out quite as I expected. Downloaded 64 versions of everything and everything was buggy as hell, everything crashed every session, including Firefox (didn't crash but got really weird screen locks). Went back to 32 and everything works fine.
