I am always amazed at what people can come up to complain about. (But I'll get to that in a second.)
I own about a dozen radios that cost around $400 each. They are incredibly high quality and obviously very expensive too. But they are not the kind of radios you would camp or backpack with. They are too heavy and large for that application.
So, I did my research and bought these Midland radios. AND THEY ARE GREAT!! They have a clear and strong signal under reasonable conditions for ANY radio. Some of these reviews that whine about range clearly don't understand how radios work. They are not cell phones using giant towers that carry your signal across the nation. Radios--whether they are $400 each or $40 each, cannot overcome solid obstacles like houses and trees and mountains indefinitely. I was impressed at how well these did under less than ideal conditions.

Great set, works incredibly well with impressive range. The headsets are a bit uncomfortable and fragile. Battery life is solid but do not overcharge or that will change quickly.

First you need a FCC lincence if you are gonna be using the channels 1-7 or 15-22 since this are GMRS channels and are regulated by the FCC. If you plan to use this lincence free without worrying getting fine the the U.S. Goverment. You can use the FRS channels which are 9-14, and thanks to the private codes you got at least a few hundred channels to spare. Also the difference between the FRS and GMRS channels is that GMRS channels have a higher range of reach. So if you want to experience the full power of the radios you better get yourself a license. Now as the product. I love it, works perfectly I am only using the FRS channels since I don't have a license for the GMRS channels yet. Also if you are wondering about how much a lincense cost. Its about 80 to 85 dollars for 5 years after those 5years expire just renew it. Using the FRS channels well I get at least 1/2 mile to 1 mile within the city. Bewarn the Range estipulated on the radios is only on optimal conditions. As I live in a busy city its obvious that there are alot of obstructions, limiting my radio range.

I had an event with several staff members and these radios worked great. However it only worked in a 3 mile radius. Once I left the venue and got on the road to go to the store I lost radio contact.

These radios are not waterproof like they state. We use them for anchoring a boat with one person on the bow and one at the helm. One of these radios was dropped overboard accidently and quickly retrieved. The battery was immediately pulled the unit was dried off and left to air dry for several days. After ensuring it was completely dry the unit was powered back up and it was found that it no longer transmitted. So while they may be water resistant, they are not waterproof.

This radio has become the standard for our Security team. I would like to make a few suggestions; the dual charger does not lend itself to issuing 2 different people a radio, who gets the charger? Battery life is very good, the included headsets are useless, an obvious attempt to move an unsalable item. Car charger is a very good idea. Weather resistant, again a great idea.

While using these radios I experienced the same battery issue as several other people wrote about. My battery pack for one of the radios wouldn't hold a full charge. I confirmed it by cycling it in my R/C charger and it would only register 300mAh or so. I emailed customer service and they sent me a new battery no questions asked. Thanks for the great service. Maybe they have changed their policy after a few bad reviews.

These work perfectly! I took them on a cruise with my family and they made it so easy to keep in touch with everyone. Just be sure to charge them every night when you are getting ready for bed so they are ready for the next day. My son forgot one night and it went dead halfway into the next day. Otherwise, Great product!

Used these to communicate between cars as we drove across the country. They worked very well but did need to be charged every night after all day use. We also didn't like the earpiece and had to buy a better fitting set at Radio Shack. Other than that they were a very good investment. Can't imagine making the drive without them. Now we'll use them for hiking.

I like the Midland for general use, but it apparently does not have enough volume for use on a motorcycle with a closed helmet and a Security Headset. At highway speeds I could hear no communication at all.

These work perfect. We used them on our RV when we went on rendevous with other campers. Lots of fun to be able to communicate with everyone.

These are great com units. We have more than one set and will likely be getting more. I am not sure about the headpieces though. The staff says they are a little uncomfy but they still use them and aren't demanding new headsets... Yet. The range is more than what we need. I use them on medium power for the range to help save on the battery because I need them to last a full weekend of use. I like how if the battery does drain, I can always fall back on AAs. The rechargeable feature is really nice and in the event of power failure and battery dying we can also charge them in the cars. The weaker Midland coms that we have work well with these but their range isn't as good. They sometimes will cut out on the edges of the location we work in. These ones don't have that problem though. They beep for a bit to warn of low battery. Giving you plenty of time to get back to where you can get a recharge or replacement battery.

We used these on a Carnival cruise. In my opinion, these are a must have for cruise goers. Each family member had their own - so we had 4 in all. We went cruising with extended family and were able to share these across the extended family. It was awesome. These saved us so much time from having to wait for each other and to know where everyone was. The extra channels made it so that we had our own dedicated line. We never heard anyone else the entire time. The range was good enough that, in general, they worked for us the good majority of the time. There are some nuances that we learned about these radios by using them for a week straight. 1.) They are voice activated, so if you push the button and don't speak into the speaker properly, they don't turn on. We recommend "practicing" using them properly. 2.) You should push the button, wait 1 second and then speak. It was nice for us to have multiple ones because we knew if we were broadcasting or not. We usually stuck in pairs.
I'm only giving them 4 stars because of the quirkiness about them not always broadcasting when we thought they were. Having multiple ones made this less of a problem for us.

Use these radios for neighborhood/area emergency preparedness. All my FRS/GMRS radios are Midland (except my Ham radios, but that is a different area altogether), although my neighbor swears by Motorola. During monthly drills, I am the one everyone can hear and is performing the bridge. One feature I wish these radios had was a USB port charger, but I rarely use these radios in the car and the USB charger is not yet the norm. GMRS still requires a ridiculous FCC license that is way over priced. Even so, please don't use the GMRS frequencies on these radios unless you are properly licensed.

Just tested these for a shoot and they are perfect for in ear com between two people and it comes with frequency info if you are worried about wireless lav com issues! Great product!

I'm a licensed ham radio operator since 1993 so I know a little bit about radio communications. These units are not bad for close contacts but forget about the advertised 36 mile range, That's the range you'll maybe get if your on the water with no obstructions in the way or in open country or on a ski slope. If your in a heavily residential area you'll be lucky to get 1 mile. You've got to understand how these radios work. Their "Line Of Site" units which means they work great as long as nothing gets in the way of their radio signals like homes and buildings, In areas like that they will not work well. If your using them in a less densely populated area they will work better. If your following someone in a car and each car has one of these units they will work fairly well as long as you stay within a reasonable distance from each other and in site of each other on the road if possible. I've used these units on cruise ships to stay in contact with others in our group and they did work fairly well. I even contacted someone on land when I was on the ship and it was docked 5 miles off shore but remember that was over the water and the other person was right on the shore and the reception was good. These radios are a good way to stay in contact with others if your on a work site or in a warehouse or on a farm or in a local area like a shopping mall their good to have. I like them for what they are but I also know what they will do and will not do. Too many people see the distance advertisement on these radios and are disappointed when they get them home and try them out. This information is also stated in the instruction manual of these radios but you only read the manual after you've bought the radio. Hope this educated some of you folks out there.

purchased the kit- plugged the radios- wanted to use these for my flight nurses at a health fair. the NEW radios did not hold a charge. we called midland 816-241-8500 No help at all, no one answers the phone, once the phone was answered i was transfered-and no one ever picked up. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. I GIVE THEM A SCORE OF F

After reading many reviews regarding walkie-talkies on a ship, I was a little hesitant to purchase because of all the talk about them not working well. We found all the contrary to be true. This unit not only worked well everywhere on the boat, but also between many levels of decks. My in-laws who were tending to our sleeping toddler on deck 2 could communicate with us very clearly while we were on deck 9. It even worked well with another brand of walkie-talkies that other family members were using (Motorola). I am not sure if it would work the same on every ship, but it worked very well for us on the Carnival Valor.

I ordered several sets. While the range is good, and I generally like how easy it was to set up and use. I have had several of the sets malfunction within a few days.

Dont expect to get the 35 mile range. You can get about 2 to 3 miles normally. Also they are a little larger than I like. You can get smaller ones that do just as good.

Anyone who looks at the cheaper two-way radios expecting to get 36-miles needs to understand that none of them will get that distance without direct line of site (maybe)! I wish 2-way radio makers would put more estimates than just line of site. We would get better quality reviews on these products if they did. I purchased the Midland GXT1000VP4 to replace my GXT600 set from 4 or 5 years ago, and they have always been great for my needs. I only use them for less than a mile, but that is all I expect no matter what is printed on these cheaper two-way radios. The only reason I knocked a star off is because of the battery situation, in my opinion, they need to start accepting AA rechargeable batteries vs. the cheap AAA made packs. I do use the XX Eneloop NiMH rechargeable in my radios, and they work fine, but show 2 out of 3 bars on the battery meter. If the battery meter drops to 1 bar, High drops to Low on the transmission, so I just make sure I use the best NiMH freshly charged batteries at each of my events.

Excellent product! Worked well between a 26' moving truck and a car driving on the highway...at one point had a 3-mile range while driving. A pleasant surprise!
