I also like that these radios use 4 AA batteries, rather than the 3 of our other pair of Motorola FRS radios, and hope that translates into a longer time between needing a recharge. (Overall size is about the same.)

kids enjoy them and that should be the target to sell to KIDS

Edit:
ear pieces still are terrible. Possibly got worse for being heard from the other party. Battery life diminished to maybe an hour for both battery packs. And the wall charger stopped working. It actually got nuclear hot it burned my finger tips and a spot on the hard woof floor. I should have notified ebay sooner but the battery life going down the drain after only 3 hunts this year is crap.
Hopefully I can get my money back for this junk. Useless.

I immediately ordered another set, before I got my refund. This set had one radio that would discharge a fully charged battery in 10 hours while the other one indicated a fully charged battery! I swapped batteries and that radio was the problem. Now, 10 hours is long enough for some, but being an electrical engineer, I knew that a problem existed that might get worse with time. So, I sent that set back!
Now, the thing is, that I really liked the radios! (When they worked!) This was one of the top two most popular sets that claim a 36 mile range. I knew enough to know that unless you had a totally clear 36 miles, you are NOT going to get anywhere close to that! From our limited testing, we got about 4 miles in a small town. It was satisfactory to me. I did do some research before I decided on this radio. The other radio that was rated the same as these and were as popular, only had 1.5 watts on GMRS. GMRS requires a license from the FCC. Being an 'ham' I paid for the license and that is it! No test.
FRS (Family Radio System) has less range due to a lower wattage limit. While I'm on the subject, if you get your GMRS, you are allowed to have a base station, transmitting up to 50 watts to an outside antenna. This would greatly increase the range, both because of higher power and an outside, elevated antenna. Before you get too excited, the only true base station transceiver costs over $300 - $400! Do NOT be suckered into the 'base station' sold by Midland. It has the same 5 watt power as the handheld unit. It has a hand crank to provide a charge to the batteries. I didn't buy one, I just read the specifications and the feedback here on amazon. It is cheaply made.
Back to my drama! I still liked these radios, when they worked! So, I purchased a set elsewhere and so far there are no problems. I think amazon got a batch of defective radios. Yours may be fine....or not! Even though I really like these radios, I felt a one star rating was called for since both sets had problems. Apparently Midland has a quality control problem, or perhaps more likely they received faulty components. These things do happen in electronics. But, for both sets I purchased?! So, I hope you receive a good set!

I will never buy again. Despite the range and the clarity, these are no longer quality controlled and were a waste of money.

Will probably be sending these back.

and comparing to a Motorola talkabout you will newer press call button by accident.
Battery: Accumulator pack performed well for 4 days, mostly in receive mode, 2AA battery compatibility is plus for me.
Range: OK from Camp Muir to top and over Disappointment Cleaver, probably to a summit. Use high power channels ( 1 what) to get best range but be realistic.
Interoperability: CTCSS codes worked well with Motorolla Talk about and Baofeng (reception only).
Overall: will recommend.
