These radios are more complex than they need to be. Like any other GMRS radio you have to pay the FCC for a license to transmit on the GMRS frequencies. The problems I've encountered is that the FRS authorized channels are often too weak to work. Talking on the GMRS channels often is the only way these radios can reach each other. It might be a great radio. However, for now it sits in the closet waiting for the FCC's legislation to do away with the GMRS license requirement to be passed into law.
If you buy these for hunting they'd probably work. Nobody is likely to be around that would care what channel you're talking on and you could use the included ear pieces and whisper-to-talk feature to keep your noise level down.

They work kind of ok, the range is always smaller unless you find the very perfect conditions, that rarely happens in life. The options and control menus are a bit difficult to learn and use. No to happy with this last point.

Don't waste your money on these radios. In order to use you must depress the PTT switch, and then speak slowly and directly into the pin hole mike opening and maybe--just maybe--someone with the other handset may hear you. I'm going back to Motorola hand held radios, these stink. Have been using hand held on the job site for years and years. These are not competitive with other sets. Stinko !!!!!

The radios are good for sure, nice charging dock, but those PTTs! The PTT headset that comes with it is awesome - it will enlarge your earhole and crush your outer ear when you wear it and it seems that if your not going to talk loudly, then you should eat the mic otherwise it wont pick you up very well. Other than that, though, these have been sturdy radios that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to buy, but would also recommend getting a different type of PTT headset if you plan on using one.

Bought these for our grandkids (4 to 8) and used them around our home (out in the country). They were clear and had good reception and should fit the bill for my intended use... which is for the grandkids playing down by the creek, down at the neighbors, and around the homestead.

I bought a pair of these a couple of years ago (not through Amazon). They've gotten hardly any use, and largely have sat on the charger waiting for an emergency. Today, I was going to decharge the batteries a little and put them back on the charger. One of the radios completely froze up. I took out the battery, tried fresh batteries (they take AA, too), everything. Wouldn't ever turn back on. Range is very limited - even within our own home, we sometimes had trouble hearing transmissions from the other radio. Avoid.

The car charger that came with this does NOT fit into the units. You will have to buy an aftermarket set up to charge from your car so carry spare AA batteries. There's a lot of discussion on the Internet about this problem. The unit does not have nearly the range it advertises -especially in rolling hills or mountainous areas - so beware of this and do not count on clear communication 100% of the time. If I were in a hot air balloon for instance and needed accurate and clear commo - I'd look around for something substantially better for instance. As it is, it works okay for a few cars in a car club convoy trip.

"36-Mile" range is not even close to being realistic. I couldn't even get 1/2 mile range in the city. Doesn't work as advertised. VOX hands free functionality is basically worthless... it takes a while to kick in and then cuts out before you are done talking. Headsets are very difficult to put on. Other features seem to work as advertised. This radio works fine if you are in the same building and don't need the VOX feature but if not, it's useless. Overall, not too happy with this purchase.

Work like a charm. Range is phenomenal and they work on the ski hill with the family which is why they were purchased. Can be very simple or very complex depending on needs. Haven't tried the earpieces yet. I can vouch for the range as I drove to a mountain top miles away and radioed back home crystal clear. Did have line of sight in that instance of course.

Used this for a yearly summer camp I volunteer at. It's rechargeable and has great ranges, especially if your campsite is huge and you're coordinating frequently with other staff members. It also comes with an earpiece that you can connect to the walkie withoug having to pull it from your pocket or belt. Simply press the push-to-talk button the cord to speak.

These are great for their price. They are much cheaper than buying locally. I've had a couple die, but it took long 20 foot falls into water to kill them. I've see a lot of complaints on these, but unless you are spending $400+ for a radio expect to replace them often and appreciate the cheap price. I purchased an FCC license just so I could use these at max power. Great range and easy to use the menu compared to other radios. I used them this past weekend while rappelling with a large group at an 700'+ mountain. They worked everywhere from the top of the mountain to the bottom even back to the parking lot on the other side of the gigantic granite rock.

Overall these are the best handheld two-way radios (in this 'category'). However, do not plan on using the rechargeable batteries that come with the units. I have had eight of these, all of the rechargeable batteries have quit working and will not charge. Logically I thought it was operator error, but after reading the instructions I realized I was doing nothing wrong and it was the fault f the product.
Understand that I mainly use these for days when we are out on our boats, or on road trips, or up on the mountains -- so they do not see heavy use and are not really exposed to the elements.
I would buy them again and be happy I did. After my first pair died I tried brands and none compared to the range and quality of these.

We use these between between warehouse(s) and the office(s.)
Metal building, 100' apart, Low power works, but sometimes a little scratchy. Medium and High power are overkill for this application.
Hoping the lower power will give longer battery life. Using Eneloope rechargables now.
These are a bit bigger than they look in the picture. Bigger than other Midland WT we've had in the past. Right on the edge of being too big, but not over.
They also have a weather channel scanner and alert. You can run it in weather mode only or standard mode with weather alerts.
All in all pretty good.

These radios have made my fishing and camping trips so much more enjoyable. Now everyone can keep in touch wherever we are within the maximum 36 mile radius. Although the mile radius is considerably smaller in heavy woods or in towns it still preforms very well. I would not go hunting, camping or boating without these radios.

I am not an expect 2 way radio user but I have GMRS license. This is my 2nd set. I tested out this radio in my home area with High Power, lots of house around, I can got around 0.5 +/- range.

One consistent theme you'll see in the reviews is that these radios are very inconsistent in their manufacture. I bought 8 based of recommendations of our staffs of our as being their most reliable radio. I've already sent two back, almost all of them hold no charge in their batteries after only a couple weeks use. When you get a good set, they last a long time evidently. Unfortunately, many are bad right out of the package. I won't purchase again. I've also never been impressed with Midland controls. They are harder to understand than some other brands.

Bought these to use at the beach. We leave one at the rental condo and take the other out to the beach, about a half mile from the house. They work great! We use AA rechargeable batteries and they last a couple of days on standby. They are silent until someone keys up and speaks. They DO NOT work across 36 miles though, that's just an outright lie. Our in-laws live 2 miles down the road, and the radios will not work at that distance. Maybe 36 miles in space, but not here on earth with buildings, trees, houses, other radio interference. If you need to transmit more than a mile you'll want something a little more powerful, maybe a CB radio. As long as you don't need to go far, they are nicely made, weatherproof and work great!

First off, these will not transmit even 1 mile if there are any buildings, trees, standing people or leaves in the way. I bought these for a relative who lives on a hill. I thought they would transmit to the fields below. Sick relative would be able to call her husband for any needs. Seemed like a perfect idea.
When these came in I charged them overnight. Then came the test.
I cannot see the fields because of the trees. But, without trees the fields are slightly below and within 1 mile of the house.

We have used these on a few hunts and camping trips. Works great car to car, and with headsets, we can talk are shows easily. Testing these now for concert filming.

I agree with many in the reviews for this product that the 36 mile range is unrealistic in the real world and was probably achieved under ideal conditions. For my wife and I, we found that half to one mile in both built-up areas and moderately heavy wooded areas (we hammock camp) was about the max range. For our camping purposes, this is more than adequate. We have not tried over water or in a boating scenario.
The compact size makes these units easy to carry- we attached them to our pack straps. I'm disappointed that no radio case is available made specifically for these units- to include Midland's site. We have used them in light rain without incident but would have liked the extra protection of a case. My wife and I liked the NOAA weather feature- April in Arkansas tends to have bad weather- severe storms and tornados. We use these at home for this reason as well as when we are in the field.
When we got these units, we turned off the beep ('roger') feature occurring during power turn on and transmitting. This greatly increased battery life. Have not used the included head sets yet, so I can't comment on their use. Other than the range, great, useful product. Would recommend.

I use these on oil locations to communicate with my team members and they work wonderfully well. Anyone buying radios of this nature is probably aware that the 36-mile range thing is a joke. If you go over a hill out of the line of sight, you are looking at maybe a half mile range. There should be some sort of realistic standard for describing the range of radios like this, because given that the range in real world conditions is such a tiny fraction of their stated range, it feels like false advertising. I wasn't looking for anything near 36 miles, but 1 or 2 might have been nice. Other than that, they are well built and function correctly. They take a very long time to charge - 24 hours initially and then 12 hours thereafter, which I find kind of odd. For something in this price range, the quality is quite good and I am happy with them for what they are.

I order and reorder these radios as they are the best deal for the range of channels. We use our radios 5 out of 7 days a week and have had to send many back to the factory for a variety of issues. Would love to spend 10 to 20 dollars more for a more durable radio.

Yes, the 36-mile range is a joke, as are most of the distance ratings for walkie talkies; but the set performed well and held a charge for many hours of continuous use during a recent camping trip. Actual distance is probably more like a mile, based upon an unscientific test we conducted to test the units; and that's more what one would expect. The set appears to have a lot of functionality, but is not particularly intuitive for anything other than the basics. It did come with instructions, which can help the purchaser get the most from the set. Didn't have an opportunity to test the extent to which the walkie talkies were waterproof, but use during a rain storm didn't seem to damage anything. Quality set, good price, fast delivery - can't ask for much more.
