These are some pretty decent radios. I needed a couple for a job site I was working on, and as you can imagine, trying to communicate with your team from across the yard while the yard-noise is full in the air can be quite a challenge. Even with the noise, I was able to hear and understand things my team needed to convey. Haven't had the need for the extra devices yet, but I'm sure given time I will...certainly nice to have.

Sounds as good as a good radio broadcast, very clear. Turned roger beep off. Makes a static sound before squelch kicks in after you stop transmitting, so that function is useless unless you get off on the beeping. In the directions it explains what range you can expect according to your location. High frequencies will bounce off of buildings, trees, thick heads, etc. So unless you and your buddy stand on the highest skyscraper, within 35 miles of each other and a helicopter or airliner doesn't fly between you, than you won't get the 35 mile range. All else fails read the manual, not rocket science.

I heave to say I really Like these Midland radios. The main reason I bought these radios are the fact that they can transmit on 5 watts of power. These little radios sure do pack a punch. I know that some people look at the 36 mile rating and expect to get 36 mile coverage. When I purchased these I never expected to get that kind of range. All I wanted was a radio that could achieve 100% coverage at my cabin in northern Minnesota which sits on 40 acres of heavily wooded and hilly land. I easily get 100% coverage of the property. I have only used the high power (5 watts) setting so far but I have a funny feeling I could cover all 40 acres even on a low power channel. Tonight I decided to test the range on the radios. I had my wife stay inside the cabin while I drove toward the nearest town. During the test I remained inside the vehicle and she remained inside the cabin. The weather was clear skies, -14 degrees fahrenheit, relative humidity 60%. The test also took place in very hilly, wooded and remote area. I was able to transmit about 6 miles back to the cabin. At 6 miles parts of the transmission were hard to understand. Anything less than 6 miles was pretty loud and clear. I am very impressed with this 6 mile range. I also completed a similar test at my house in the suburbs and the transmission range was about 2 miles, which really is pretty decent in a suburban setting. I also pair these radios with the Midland Base Camp radio at my cabin. The Base Camp also transmits on 5 watt power so it is the perfect match of radios. Range was all I really cared about when selecting these radios and I am not disappointed. Even my father which is a HAM radio operator didn't believe these radios would have that kind of range.

This was bought as a present for my brother (from his fiance) for Valentines day. Haven't really been able to check it all out. But, what I do know is that it came right on time, and all the pieces came in the box, and they do work. But, when he does further testing on it, I will let everyone know. As of right now they are perfect!

We use about 10 of these for paintball scenarios and they all work great. They've been dragged all over the fields for several years getting mud/water/paint throw on them and even once or twice taking a direct hit with no negative effects. Every now and then one of the headsets will give out due to the abuse listed above, but the radios just keep on working.
I bought my first set back in 2009 and whenever we get new players we always tell them to get this model and the secret service style headset.

Never a Midland set again. Had one unit that would not always transmit when purchased. Sent in for repair and they sent another that looked like a dog had chewed on it. Sent it in and they sent another that also had transmit problems. The last one they sent, when fully charged Shows low battery icon when transmitting and sometimes the "tx" icon only comes on initially upon pressing the transmit button, then transmission is lost. Maybe just a lemon set but nonetheless a lemon set the manufacturer did not rectify with many chances. Never had this problem with the brands I have used over the years. Extremely dissatisfied.

I am having trouble paring it with our Motorola pro walkies at work but used it with the cheaper brands and it worked great! The NNOA weather stations are great to have. Battery life was good, worked all day long but the head phones that come with it are horrible!!! Worst I have ever used. I have not tested the durability of this product in wet environments but I did drop it once on concrete and not even a scratch. Feels like thick hollow plastic. but it is holding up. It would be great to have a small LED flashlight function and to pick up other local radio stations.

I paid the extra money for this set due to cheap set I bought (Uniden) only got me less than 1/4 mile. I though well 36 mile should get me 2-4 mile in the city. Well I only get 1/2 mile out of them, one of them in house and the other in car driving away to see distance. Disappointed in the range, the company should stop putting 36 mile range but rather city use. I don't know many people using them in the open plains, in the air, or in space. where they are not obstructed. Most people use them in a city setting so companies should have to put the avg. city distance to max range of use. Having this I feel people would have a better understanding just how short ranged the radios are.
I bought Uniden brand but due to only getting less then 1/4 mile I did not think they would be good on the cruise ship. I got this set also for the cruise ship, I will test both on the cruise and post again if they work well. I do not think they will due to all the metal and other barriers in a cruise ship. 1/2 is longer than a cruise ship so I am hopeful they work.

good radios for what i do which is only within a half mile radius. I work in the city sometimes in downtown and that is the best i could get out of the radio on full battery. They do like kind of cheap material but they do work so its not all that bad i suppose, good for malls and cruises pretty much anything under a half a mile, ohh n dont even bother with the mics, they are still ptt, so u still have to press the button, hold and speak. for the price for me it aint worth it but the company paid for it so i aint complainning. lol

Can't get them to work....not going to sign up with the government either! Just wanted a decent way to be able to talk to the spouse while he is in the barn and I'm in the house. None of the channels will allow us to talk. I'll probably sell them and hope I can get most of my money back

Good little radios. They are limited in range, and that will depend on environment. But they certainly work well enough for me when working with a team of bounty hunters on an apprehension. Beyond a mile, not so useful. They are "line of sight" so range will depend on how much obstruction (houses, trees, mountains, etc) are between radios.
But for clarity of audio, and reliability, they're terrific.

We bought these for a 2-car caravan as we moved. Our journey was 900 miles, spread out over 2 days. The walkies lasted the entire time, without needing a recharge. We just turned them off when not in use. However, the range of these walkies left a lot to be desired. I understand that 36-mile is in ideal conditions, and never expected to get that range. However, I did expect them to operate at distances of 1-2 miles, on the U.S. Interstate system, in the midwest. It's fairly flat, and in many places rather interference free. But, these walkies were unable to achieve that, on FRS. We were only able to communicate within 1/2 mile.
The instructions were fairly clear, and easy to follow. If you're really wanting something for FRS only, with decent ranges, keep looking.

They do look nice. I'm not a an expert but I can tell you I couldn't talk to my son from five miles, four miles, three miles, two miles or even one mile. These were a total waste of my money. If you want some toy talkies for your kids so they can talk from one backyard to another or talk from the lake house to the boat dock maybe these would be a good investment.

these walkie talkies I'm not really what they saying on 35 mile range but it is still amazing product and it works very good I use it once and it's fine the package it was pretty decent but they could do a better job on the charger overall I am happy with this product I will recommend it to all my friends and family I give it 4 stars

So far, I've just used this on my little 42 acre country place to communicate with my granddaughter while we roam around on 4-wheelers on different parts of the property. The range is more than enough and the audio is quite clear. Battery charge lasts all day and maybe then some. Sometimes we have to switch to another channel as we hear other people talking and they have to be at least a mile away and probably more. It says 36 mile range, but I haven't tested that.

I am a grandfather with teenage cousins and grandchildren that cannot seem to stay with the group on family outings. Well, that ended when I got these. Yes, the FCC license fee ($80) is a bit of a drag, but what the heck, for piece of mind. I have been able to stay in contact with my family through thick walls, open fields, and behind hills with ease. They are static free and the clarity, fantastic. I have yet to test the 36 mile range limit, but for strict FRS replacement, they are just better. Since these have FRS channels as well, I can still interface with other families who do not have GMRS. There are a lot of features that do not work very well for me and that is VOX. Even with the sensitivity set to MAX, the radio cuts off some of the conversation when you start talking. That is not a deal breaker to me since our family uses the PTT button. These radios have more features than most people would use, but it is nice to have them at no extra cost. I highly recommend these for any family who wants to keep in contact. They are very well built and I grew up with Midland CB radios in the 70's, so I know quality.

We got these because I had hip surgery from being injured in iraq. He is a mechanic working out of the home so he can care for me and we needed a way for me to get ahold of him quickly if I needed him. These worked perfectly! He had to run to the store a few days after my surgery and we tried it out to see how far it would reach. He made it to the store approximately 3 to 4 miles down the road and I could still hear him. They definitely worked for what we needed them for and im sure we will be using them for other things in the future. I would buy again.

Oh, I want to write a better review for these radios, but the bad batteries make that impossible. As radios, they deliver as promised ... BUT ... I have replaced both batteries in the 11 months I have owned these. Not sure why. I didn't abandon them on the charging station (and overcharge them) ... I didn't abuse the batteries ... they just stopped holding a charge. Disappointing.

Work well around the home and short distances out hunting/hiking/camping. It should be noted that the distance advertised on all of these radios are complete bull. It might be possible in perfect lab conditions or based on mathematical possibilities but you wont get anywhere near it in practicality. Just in case someone didn't already know. Best I've gotten is about 100 yards out in the plains. Haven't use all the feature but it appears rich in that aspect.

These devices worked great. The distance on them was very helpful during a conference that was held in a large church. The only shortcoming is the earpieces. They did not stay put on my ears very well. I will be looking for some replacements.

One of the radio's stopped working within 2 months. It was not dropped or damaged. Just stopped working. Consider buying similar units locally at a brick and mortar store so you have more power to return the item if it breaks within a 90 day period. The warrant was only good for 1 month from this vender online.

WOW... EXCELLENT !!! BETTER THAN EXPECTED !!! HAVEN'T USED ALL THE FEATURES YET... BUT DEFINATELY 5 OUT OF 5 !!!!! THEIR OWN BATTERIES WORK A LOT FURTHER BUT SOLAR AA'S WORK EXCELLENT TOO !!! GREAT FOR EMERGENCY USE!!! LOVE THEM!!!!! CLEAR SOUND.. JUST EXCELLENT!!! VERY GOOD FOR THE PRICE TOO!!!

It's very simple. There are no other better two-way radios (bubble packed) than this. The range could be even 4 or 5 blocks in a high density city such as NY. When using it in line of sight might be miles. I used them once in Lyon, Fr. and my wife went to the top of the Cathedral and I was in the convention center about 12 miles away.

These are great radios, and I love that you can use either the rechargeable battery pack or conventional alkaline batteries. We used them to communicate between two cars on vacation, and they worked flawlessly. We took some extra batteries in case the rechargeable battery packs didn't last all day, but they still showed a full charge at the end of every day.
