Traded up to BaoFeng UV-5RA, much better radio's for the price, better range and private channels.
Plus you can get licensed to use a repeater which really improves the range by a hundred times.

These radios also enable settings for hands-free voice activated transmit (VOX), Microphone Sensitivity (whisper mode), and each radio has an Ear Bud & Clip-on PTT (Press To Talk) switch. You can also disable the "Beep" sound when transmitting, or no Squelch sound for receiving in conditions such as Hunting, whereby you do not want a radio making noise. Having Weather Stations and various Weather notifications come in very handy when you are out in secluded areas. The included NiMh Battery packs for each unit hold up well, and as shown includes the Charger Base and Wiring for AC & DC operation. You also have the capability of removing the rechargeable battery pack and installing (4-AA) Alkaline batteries should you find yourself out of battery pack power, and no place to immediate recharge the battery packs. The radios are well built, user friendly. The only constructive criticism would be that Midland needs to offer a well-made Carrying Case or Cases, to accommodate these model radios. Things can and do happen to these pieces of electronics during normal usage, it doesn't do any good to have them exposed to branches, leaning up against some rock, or bumped into during a work job, or even falling down - so, hey Midland this has been requested numerous times by your customers - get with it. Also, Amazon does have a couple sellers that DO offer cases that will fit these particular model radios, and they at least afford some protection. Hope this helps the reader herein.

The "package" of the included car charger and especially the earbuds make this a great value in my mind and why I recommended it. Car charger adds flexibility for use out and about. The earbuds work well but take a bit adjusting so they are tolerable in your ear for hours on end. When I'm hunting, even a vibrating cell phone makes enough noise to irritate me, not to mention all the commotion and movement it takes to dig it out and talk or text. By comparison I've found these earbuds silent to all but the one wearing them. These headsets have a well designed push-to-talk button (PTT) on the cord which has a nice solid "click" that I can feel even with mittens on. Route the wire so the button is exposed and you bury the radio in your layers and forget about it. With the roger-beep turned on (rb = on), I can respond by dead-keying the PTT to create a series of beeps (our code: 1-beep=yes, 2=no, 3=can't talk I'm huntin'). My buddy can talk as and when he wants and it doesn't risk disturbing anything around me. If I want to keep quiet, I can silently press the button 1, 2, or 3 times to respond. Or I can whisper - while I can't tell any difference with the "whisper mode" turned on or off, the mic pics up a whisper well if located optimally. We got thoroughly soaked by heavy rain the last day last year so I can attest to the water-resistance of the radios. One headset malfunctioned at the time, and I thought it was toast, but it worked again when it dried out and served us well again this season.
so ... why not 5 stars? They are great but aren't perfect - as another reviewer said, hard to remove battery (really, Midland, why no ribbon??), menu is complex, earbuds take a lot of tweaking to make tolerable and still aren't really "comfortable" (a little smaller with more padding would help?) and a little bulky. Lastly: really, why do companies think that everything outdoor must be cammo? If you really think a cammo radio will aid your efforts to be undetected in the woods ... uh ...well ... never mind, on second thought, I'll not spend my time arguing with you. Midland, why not a blaze orange model or bright yellow so I can see it when I drop it by the truck or around camp or see it when rummaging around in my pack at dawn/dusk (there is similar kit in black, but black isn't much better)? These scenarios HAVE happened to me and I'd say are much more likely than having a hunted critter "make me" because my radio isn't cammo. [sigh] Just another indication companies are more into shelf appeal than in-the-field function and common sense... okay ... climbing down from soapbox now. Great kit for the money, highly recommended, just not 5-star perfect.

On to the cruise. Having read plenty of reviews about Two-way radios and cruise liners I was fully aware of them possibly not working. With that being said I was able to communicate with other members of my part between 2-4 deck levels away at almost all times. There where a few times we were farther apart and we could not get through but that was expected. For those of you going to the casino on board.. you can be right next to the person ... and they still wont hear you :)

The sound is great and the distance is good.
Just wish the batteries available with them would have a larger Ma/Hr rating

The Pros: They work well in steel buildings inside and out, you just have to make sure the volume/range is on high. They are definitely more professional and have lots of plus plus, like weather and interesting ways to work them, with instruction.

I like to barbecue and my wife preps indoor meals while I'm outside. We can stay in touch and coordinate the meal. Another great use is for maintenance personnel to be in two places and talk back and forth to one another.
The features are plentiful. Including VOX, call alert, privacy settings and SOS. But note that the privacy setting keeps others off your channel but anyone can hear your transmissions.
