32GB isn't a lot of storage space these days, but when you have a 16gb iPad2 that's almost full, this seemed attractive at the $59.99 price Amazon had on it several weeks ago. The box mimics an Apple iPhone or iPad box, and the device itself is a little wider than I expected. Some co-workers have commented that it looked like an old iphone. I think it looks like a wider space casket containing Spock, that was shot out into space.If you've read other reviews you already know it's formatted FAT and not NTFS, so the file size can't exceed 4gb. I realized it when I bought it. I have plenty of under 4gb content to put on it. I plugged it in the charger and a couple hours later it was ready. Then I copied my media files onto it, unplugged it and followed the instructions on connecting to it (although if it were missing instructions, it so easy I would have figured it out fairly fast).I connected my iPad and iPhone and started playing a couple different media files without any issues. I brought it to work and 2 guys with Android-based devices connected to it, while I used my iPad and it worked fine as well. As long as you realize it's short comings (non-expandable memory/file size issue) before you purchas it, I don't see where you wouldn't be happy with it.

The Wi-Drive is one of those interesting products that fills a definite need. When it comes to phones and tablets we're an all Apple household. Unfortunately we're too cheap to buy any iProduct bigger than the 16GB option. That's where the Wi-Drive comes in.Think of it as a portable wireless hard drive for your Apple products (yes it works for Android too). Anytime I take trips or know I'll have some downtime I just load it up with movies or music. Your iPhone/iPad connects to it just like any other wireless network, open up your settings and go to wireless and there it is. Overall it's a really great solution for an Apple created problem (where's the expandable storage guys??)It's only getting 4 stars because it does have some quirks. I would like to be able to save photos, etc. from my iPhone to the drive, but unfortunately it doesn't do that. The only other "limitation" is that you can't play non-apple approved video file formats with the Wi-Drive using the Wi-Drive app. However, you could use another program like VLC media player to play those files on your iOS device. Or you can also use programs like Handbrake (on your PC) to convert your digital movie files into a more iOS friendly format.

I've had this drive for over a month now and decided it was worth writing a review. The first one I received was unfortunately defective...however, this turned in to an opportunity for Kingston to show just how amazing their customer service is. They made short work of the turnaround and the replacement works perfectly. In fact, it works even better than I imagined. The range is absolutely incredible. In the building where I work, I can turn it on and have it sitting on my desk; about 40-50 feet away a co-worker can pick it up at full strength and stream a movie, and about 100 feet away around a corner (with a stairwell blocking a direct line-of-sight) another co-worker can pick it up at almost full strength. We all three were able to stream different movies to watch. I'm not sure what kind of range this device has, but I'm extremely impressed thus far.The other thing to point out is something I couldn't find any info about prior to purchasing; it appeared that you could only stream files from the drive to a device, but it's actually possible to copy them to the "Local" drive (i.e., the phone, iPad, etc.) and watch them without have the Wi Drive on or with you. So...while it may not be allowed to have it on during a flight, one could definitely download movies from it to the device during a layover.Everyone that has seen it (or accessed) is very impressed with the size and capability. For anyone with a 16Gb iPad or iPod, this would be a great way to have extra files with you. (I've used it for video, music, jpeg, and data files)

Fortunately, I didn't spend my own cash to buy this stupid thing. I got it through my work. My main issue with this device is that it isn't truly a total wireless solution. You can't Write/Add/Update or Modify any files on the Wi-Drive without the USB cable connection. Kingston is very vague about this in their description of the product and they barely mention it in their manuals. I was hoping for something like a wireless hub with flash storage where I could load up a bunch of files and then sit in a group of co-workers at a conference room table and share information wirelessly for projects. The other issue I have is when in wireless mode for your iPad or iPhone the transfer rate and response is unbelievably slow. The "Bridging" feature to allow you to use it and bridge to your WiFi network is a joke as well. Just give me a 32gb flash drive and I'll be on my way.

The Kingston Wi-Drive is an idea whose time has come. It works well and makes viewing movies and other multimedia files via your iPhone/iPad very easy.However, there is one hidden drawback that makes the device far less desirable: it is formatted in FAT32 and thus will not allow any file larger than 4gb to be copied over. Let me repeat that so that it is very clear: you cannot copy a file larger than 4gb to this device and there is no workaround for this limitation. For those of you that are in the IT field, you understand what this limitation means. For those of you not tech-savvy, what this means is that the largest size file that you can copy onto this device is about 4gb. Now that may not sound like a big deal, but when you have a studio-produced movie file often the size of the file exceeds 4gb. For home movies, song files and other basic multimedia files this is not a deal breaker. But if you are using the device like I am, for watching Hollywood movies, then you will run headlong into this limitation.I contacted Kingston support to confirm that there is no workaround to this problem and they did confirm that this is a fixed limitation. The drive cannot be reformatted to NTFS due to the configuration files for management of the wireless connectivity. What really is frustrating is that Kingston chooses to hide this issue from the consumer. No where is there any mention of this little restriction, and I believe that this type of fact should be clearly disclosed in the product description.Otherwise this is a great little device. It's small, light, easy to work with, and the streaming of the files has so far worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, the file size limitation severely reduces the number of production movies that you will be able to copy to the drive.[...]November 13th, 2011:Please click the COMMENTS link below to see a reply to my post and my subsequent reply to that post. A suggestion to use a freeware application named Handbrake resulted in my ability to rip the original HD files over 4gb into reduced-size files optimized for my iPad. Once I ripped (reformatted) the files, I ended up with a file that was less than half the size that I could move to my Wi-Drive. There was no loss of quality and I now can watch all of my movies via the Wi-Drive.

The Wi-Drive is a good storage solution for IPhone , Ipad , Android .....ect users. , Mainly used for streaming movies to your mobile device to save storage space especially if you have 16GB phone , also the internet bridge function is what makes this device worth it , I got the 64GB version for $115 from amazon and in my opinion that's the maximum amount this device is worth, due to the followings :-1- WI Drive app needs much improvement cause I'm getting the(Can't connect ) message frequently and I have to restart the App at least a couple of time before i get connected .( Very Frustrating)2- Movies on the Wi Drive can only be viewed on the phones screen ,So if you have video glasses like I do ,they won't work .3- The internet bridge function is not working seamlessly in spite of having a configured access point you must go the connection process and rebooting the Drive frequently (Also frustrating )4- Device getting pretty hot while streaming a video especially if internet connection is active and downloading something , I noticed that the Wi Drive does not level anymore when putting it on a glass surface .

This drive was pretty easy to set up. It did take a couple of tries but in all only about 15 minutes to get it installed and running. I guess that the only issue I have with this little drive is that it is only 128 GB which a couple of years ago would be a lot of storage, but now with HD digital copies taking so much room, you need more space. The only other problem I had was that I couldn't use it while it was charging. This limits use to the battery life. Other than that, it is a real nice drive.

Great for all those files you want to carry around my only complaint like most they dont have it able to open in another app on my ipad and save back to it for files this could easly be done by in other apps they would just open in widrive app and from there they could save it back to the drive. I know my request seems silly but I use mine more than just media i use it for office files, excel,word,powerpoint, ect. my office does not allow cloud sync and this was away i was hoping around that but over all it works great it is a sold product. Becarfule of the usb jack seems not solded hopefully will last in wear and tear

We bought two of the 32 gb devices after returning the Seagate GoFlex device (stay away from it). Initially we wanted a single 64 gb device but they were out of stock and we needed them quickly for a long drive over the holiday. Product works great, very simple to load the device with movies and music. Having two devices worked much better than a single as the charge will last approx. five hours and you cannot charge and stream at the same time. Having two devices means you need to make a few changes to the default settings. The changes are:1. Rename one of the devices SSID name from Widrive to something different. I used widrive2.2. Change the channel that it operates, We used channels 6 and 11 for the two devices. If you are using it at home, you will want to make sure you choose a channel different from the one you have on your home wifi (if applicable).Product works great and I would recommend to everyone.

This thing is great! I got the 32GB directly from Kingston for half price. I took it on a week long trip and it came in handy more than I thought. The battery life does leave some to be desired but for it's size I don't think you could expect more. Also you CAN charge it while in use. You just have to turn it on first and let it book up, then plug it into a power supply. Don't plug it into a laptop because it will shut off the wireless and mount the drive. 32GB allowed me to carry about 10 movies and 4 complete seasons of TV shows. Just remember to convert them into the right format if necessary. Grab a copy of Handbrake to do that.

I read reviews and saw the good and the bad. I am very technically inclined--I've built my own computers many times, I have mac and pc, so I feel I can trouble shoot most things.I got this thingI read the instructionsI charged it upI followed the directions exactlyI keep getting error "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO WI-DRIVE (192.168.200.254)"The web site and info I found doesn't seem to have much to offer other than to try to change the wi fi channel, which you can't do unless you connect to drive to click the menu to change the wi fi settings...Lord forbid it had an interface that you could PLUG IT IN to your PC or MAC to change settings if the wifi connection was not working right..but that kind of thought must escape Kingston.if I ever could get it to connect I might be able to see if it streams videos well. But until then...nope.Just wish I could plug it a big sd card to my ipad and solve this problem the simple way...oh well..I guess for many it just works. For me, it just does not work. I will call tomorrow to troubleshoot but I imagine 99% chance I will just return it. I already have wasted way too much time on it already for a device which is suppose to JUST WORK.

I bought this for my iPad to use for my music and movies without taking up space on my 16GB device. I had no problem getting it connected to the iPad, but the "bridge" mode would NOT work (and believe me, I'm not computer illiterate) despite multiple tries, restarts, and much research on the internet. After a few days and many more futile attempts, I decided to return the Wi-Drive. If I can't connect to the internet while using it, it's useless to me. I suppose I will try again once Kingston works out the kinks in the device. For now, it's a great thought, but the practical use wasn't working for me.

This unit does exactly what it says, *unless* you have an older device.I have two iPod Touch 2nd generation devices for my kids. The App will not run on them (it requires iOS 4.3 or greater). This isn't made clear in any of the documentation. As an alternative to the App Store App, you can use the built in web page to stream video and MP3. For these older iPods, it streams MP3s just fine, but not movies.The web app is pretty bad; not even designed for mobile screens, so you'll be zooming in and moving around the screen a lot just to tap the right file.It does work as advertised on my iPad and iPhone, but both of those devices have enough room as to not justify this purchase so i'm returning it.

My Kindle Fire 8.9 HD has 32G of memory but you learn quickly that you can use up that with movies and music downloaded to it for offline viewing/listening. The Wi-Drive is a niche product that fills the need for increased storage in a highly portable format. Connecting the Wi-Drive and Fire is seamless and the streaming is seamless as well. I have streamed movies from the Wi-Drive to the Fire and via HDMI to a tv while on the road and that worked great as well.

I used pretty good in couple months.I was trying to update firmware in pc/mac. both failed on me. and now it didn't stream mp3, mp4, avi for other device.*YOU MUST KNOW* when you use this device over wifi. you can not use internet. your iphone/ipad/android will lose their internet connectivity. means your device never tell you that you have new mail or tweet.If you have mobile hotspot with you, you can connect this device to your hotspot and your all device. then you will be okay for stream media from wi-drive and get internet connection.Good for non-internet connect-able mobile device. and you don't have enough space on your device. however 16G is too small. you should get more. and speed isn't good on these device.

This is a great product. I had read tons of reviews before I decided to buy one for myself. I wanted this hard drive so my kids could watch movies in the car (or anywhere else) on our iPods or iPad without filling up the internal storage space on the devices. It works great and you only need to load one copy of a movie or music etc. Video playback is great and the kids love it.There are a few few quirks that might cause you some headaches but nothing too bad. Startup takes a little while (it is a router so it is expected) but the issue is when you connect to the hard drive, your iPod will show your connected but sometimes it will take a full minute or longer before you can actually access the files on the drive via the wi-drive app. I also had a few issues with the bridged internet connection on my home network which was no big deal since it turned out the issue was with my router not the wi-drive. The settings interface is a little laggy I guess, sometimes it takes a second to respond to your input. The last issue I found was not really an issue so much as just annoying, if you have the drive plugged in while streaming movies do not unplug it or the drive shuts off and your movie stops and you are forced to restart the drive and movie.Overall it is a great buy for someone who just does not want to fill up their devices with movies photos, music, and other documents. I did mention I had some trouble and I contacted Kingston tech support via email and I must say they were very friendly and extremely helpful and understanding.

I got this for my wife for her Ipad. When connected to a laptop or PC, she can connect to it wirelessly from her Ipad. It gives her a lot of more space for her music and movies.Where the epic fail is, when you go on the road and there is no laptop or pc to connect this to, you can't connect to it via wireless! So it's useless when traveling and that really was the main reason we got this... to put movies on for the long road trips. But, i don't travel with a computer so.... blah.I wish they would have made it more clear in the advertising that you needed that pc connection. I zeroed in on the IPAD compatible and that's where they got me.I would really look at this before buying, if you're on the fence.If you have that desktop/laptop connedtion and you only need that extra space AT HOME.... then totally go for it! Well worth it! But, if you intend to use it for home movies, music, etc while on the road, forget it unless you have that laptop with you.I hope this helps.

I bought this to use with my Itunes Movies and TV library, I took it on a 13 hour road trip and it worked almost flawlessly for the entire trip there and back. The reason only four stars is the LED to see if it is on or not is hard to see in daylight. I had it streaming to three Ipads at the same time without ever seeing any buffering or jerkiness in the videos. Bottom line is I would buy this again, and I have recommended this to numerous friends.

As stated in the title, the Wi-drive app doesn't support external displays of any sort. If you access the drive via safari with the ip address of 192.168.200.254, you can play your media on an external source with the apple video adapters. I have a 3rd gen ipad with the 30 pin connector and it worked flawlessly.Connecting to the wireless signal of the drive was straightforward.

Cannot get it to stay connected while charging but I keep trying. Other reviewers say it is possible. This wireless drive is the best thing since sliced bread. I own both a Kindle Fire and a Nexus-7. Now I don't have to tether my tablets to my cell phone to get content. I have movies, books, and music all on my Wi-Drive. I commute back and forth from California to Nevada which takes about 4 hours. Much of the drive is out in radio never land. I can stream music through my tables directly from my Wi-Drive. This is a awesome product.Pat Price

I bought the 16gb IPad, which I soon realized was a poor decision due to the limited space, so I recently purchased the 32gb Wi-Drive. This device looks to rectify that decision and may even prove to make it a good one. For $65, it was a hard deal to pass up. It is very easy to use. All I had to do was charge it for a couple hours. Then I plugged it into my Mac and moved files into folders I had created on it (just like I would with a jump drive). I loaded about 20gb of information on it from videos to powerpoints to documents. While that was loading on the Wi-Drive, I downloaded the free app for it from the app store to my IPad. Once everything was loaded, I turned on the device and connected to its wireless network. Everything from the videos to documents streamed seemlessly to my IPad. This has been everything I hoped it would be. If you are running out of space on a device that has no expandable memory, I would highly recommend considering this device.
