The Kingston Wi-Drive is a portable hard-drive geared towards sharing media. Boasting a roomy 128GB internal SSD and streaming up to three devices, it's definitely worth a look. After taking the Wi-Drive on several road trips, I definitely got a good idea of what this drive can offer, and who might be interested in buying it. Kingston sent me a copy of the Wi-Drive for evaluation purposes.Package Contents:- Kingston Wi-Drive- Power brick with USB out- mini-USB cable- DocumentationNow that we got basic information out of the way, let's take a closer look at the Kingston's Wi-Drive. The first thing I want to talk about is the design of the Wi-Drive. It is made of sturdy plastic, and is roughly the same size as an iPhone 4S. By keeping the Wi-Drive small and lightweight, Kingston have really geared this towards portable media sharing - it's slim enough to be put easily into a pocket or laptop bag.Using the drive (physically speaking) is beyond simple - there is one button on the right side to power on and off, and a USB-mini port for charging and data transfer. The Wi-Drive has an LED indicator built into the power button to indicate power (green), and will also turn orange when the battery is low. On the front of the device are two blue LEDs to let you know when the device is connected and the Wi-Fi network is being emitted. Battery life is good, sitting at around 3 hours with constant use, however I wouldn't mind seeing that number brought up a but even if it meant bulking the Wi-Drive a little.Installation:The installation for the Wi-Drive can be separated into two parts: desktop use and device use. For the desktop, it's an easy process: just plug in via USB and access via your file manager. I easily created a few folders for different media types (music/videos/etc.) and then transferred some files. Everything was pretty snappy, although I did wonder why Kingston didn't include USB 3.0 technology seeing as the internal drive is an SSD. Still, transfer speeds were more than acceptable. Setting up the Wi-Drive with my iPhone was also pain-free. Just download the Kingston app, turn on your Wi-Drive and then connect to the new wifi network that it emits.Software:The Wi-Drive can only be used with the Kingston app, so of course I want to talk about it for a little while. It's very simple, and I might venture to say overly so. You don't have a lot of options in terms of managing files, and the UI could use a little work. That said, it does what it is supposed to do and it's pretty smooth during playback. Even playing a 2GB movie didn't slow down the response times for controls, and that's really all I could ask for. The settings page allows you to upgrade the firmware, check the information on your network connection as well as change the Wi-Drive settings. Whether you want to rename your device, change its visibility or add security, this is the place to do it. Again, it's simple but it works.Functionality:As mentioned in the information from Kingston's page, the Wi-Drive is primarily a media playback device. It is absolutely perfect for streaming movies, TV shows and music and it does so for up to three devices. A quick check with a couple of iPhones and an iPad showed no issues whatsoever in streaming. Of course, you can store any file you want on this drive, making it a nice and portable hard-drive, however those files are not able to be accessed wirelessly. I should mention that the last sentence is the sole reason why I didn't give the Wi-Drive full marks in this review. I would LOVE to see them add PC compatibility for general wireless file sharing - I think they would really pick up some more users if people could bring their Wi-Drive to a business meeting, their place of work or even just to a family members house and have everyone been able to wirelessly access files.Moving on, I found an interesting fact while browsing through the experiences of others with the Wi-Drive. Despite no official mention of charging the device while in use, several users mentioned that if you plug it in AFTER the wi-fi LEDs have turned blue, you can in fact charge the device while streaming content. I didn't notice any problems while doing so, and on a recent road trip I had it on for 5 hours while streaming a movie and it seemed to do just fine. In the first edition of the Wi-Drive there were some concerns about the device getting hot, however it seems they have addressed them and I can't say that it got any hotter than my iPhone does when being used for media.ConclusionThe Wi-Drive is a great performer, and as a media device I think it really functions well. I loved being able to remove the majority of movies and music albums from my iPhone to make space for other important files, and carrying around this little drive is rarely (if ever) an inconvenience. Whether you're going on a long flight and want some extra movies with you or you just want to free up some space on your devices, I think this is a really good choice ove

This is a great item, especially when used with the "WI-Drive" App on the Kindle Fire (2nd gen, not HD). This works flawlessly.I installed the WI-drive APP on my Kindle Fire (2nd gen, not HD), without problem. This item works flawlessly with the Wi-Drive APP (also at Amazon.com). The WI-drive app along with the Wi-Drive allows one to transfer, copy, or delete files between devices....IT ALSO allows one to RUN FILES (such as music, video, etc) DIRECTLY FROM THE Wi-Drive for use on your Kindle, PC, MP3, cellphone, etc...WITHOUT HAVING TO TRANSFER ANY DATA. So you can have music, video (documents, etc), STORED on the Wi-Drive WHILE VIEWING them on your Kindle, PC, MP3, cellphone. This is great if you don't want to take up additional memory on your device, but want the convenience of easy (anytime access) to your content, it's also great for back-up. (Some good sites for Public Domain items such as books, music, video, etc., in addition to Amazon, include : Gutenberg.org and Archive.org).The Wi-Drive is a WiFi storage device (from 8 GB- 128GB), that can connect via USB to a PC, MP3, cellphone, etc. for charging &/or data transfer.......the Wi-Drive CAN ALSO DIRECTLY CONNECT TO a KINDLE, PC, mp3, cellphone, etc., via WiFi as the Wi-Drive is itself it's own WiFi source (so that if you turn on the Wi-Drive's OWN WiFi you can share data from 1-3 devices simultaneously without the need for a wifi router or hotspot, but also allows you to use it in Bridge Mode with a wifi router). For those of us who have complained about the Kindle's lack of expandable memory for easy data storage, the Wi-Drive (while a lot more expensive than a memory card), serves well. The Wi-Drive is a bit smaller (in size and weight) than a traditional cellphone. To use the Wi-Drive (which comes boxed with a Mini-to-USB power cord with a detachable USB-wall outlet adapter, and brief manual that can also be found at: [...], press the power button on the upper right side of the device (it will light, green is fully charged, yellow partially charged, red low charge), wait a moment until you see a small flashing blue light on the upper front of the Wi-Drive (that indicates that the WiFi is turned-on and is "active"), then use this App (of course first making sure that WiFi is also turned-on on your device/ Kindle, PC, cellphone, etc.). To charge the Wi-Drive plug a micro-USB into the Wi-Drive and the USB into a PC, or into a wall outlet as the Wi-Drive comes with a USB cord as well as the USB wall outlet adapter. The Wi-Drive evidently, can store any type of file, the manual indicates that IT CAN OPEN (without the need of a third party app) the following types of files: TXT, PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MP3, MIDI, OGG, WAV, MP4. The WI-drive User Manual also indicates that it can be used with Windows XP, Windows 7 (I'm running Win 7 64-bit Home Premium), Win 8, MAC, Linux and Android operating systems. To use the Wi-Drive App with the Wi-Drive, touch the APP to open it (after you've first turned on the WiFi on the Wi-Drive and your Kindle (or PC, MP3,etc, and have verified that you are connected....on the Kindle Fire go to wireless settings > select "on" > under available networks you will see "Wi-Drive," after connecting the first time it will thereafter connect automatically when wifi is turned-on for both devices ).On your Kindle (PC, Mp3, cellphone. etc), you will see on screen: two lines (1).. searching Wi-drive (that will quickly change to "Wi-Drive") and (2).."Local Storage" (on your Kindle, Pc, Mp3, etc). to view files on the Wi-Drive tap the line that says "Wi-Drive". To view files on your Kindle, PC, MP3, etc Tap "Local Storage". IMPORTANT: to do anything with the files you have found (on the Wi-Drive, or Kindle, etc) you MUST PRESS AND HOLD THE FILE SELECTED UNTIL A SUB-MENU APPEARS ON SCREEN, as that will be the only way to transfer, copy, or delete files (unless the Wi-Drive is connected to a PC via USB). WHEN THE SUB-MENU APPEARS JUST SELECT THE DESIRED ACTION an continue to use this app to deal with the files as desired. For example, to play a video that you've stored on the Wi-Drive: select "Wi-Drive" (not Local Storage), browse to the desired file and then tap/touch the file...if you tap it, it will start playing using your Kindle's default application, if you touch it for a moment or two, you will have the option to copy or transfer it into your Kindle's Local Storage. This works for PDF, EPUB, Txt, Mp3, picture files etc. If you have created a drawing, document, etc on your Kindle....select "Local Storage" > browse to the desired file > tap & hold the selected file > select the desired action (e.g., "Copy To") > if you've selected "copy to" as the desired action then > go to "Wi-Drive" (instead of "Local Storage") and > select the folder (if any) where you want to store the document, book, drawing, etc. While I like the "ES File Explore" APP for generally browsing files, Just REMEMBER TO CARRY OUT FILE EXPLORATIO

Length:: 0:56 MinsKingston 64 GB Digital Wi-Drive with Mini-USB to USB Cable (WID/64GB-A)This product from my perspective is pretty buggy and doesn't work as advertised. It has a nice case and it is light weight, but it's been a total hassle getting it to work even partially. When you first plug it in, you get two icons - a CD and a Kingston Drive. CD icon is apparently full of Windows stuff. The second icon is a Kingston drive & it has some windows looking stuff too loaded on it too, no worky on iMac. So, as directed, I set up folders and loaded up some media - movies, tv shows, and songs. Then, as directed, I safely disconnected the WiDrive and pressed the power button. Pretty lights. Then, as directed, I loaded the Wi-Drive app on my iPad 1 and opened it. I went to my WiFi settings on my iPad and it did NOT show a Wi-Drive network...nada. So, I checked the WiDrive App and it was showing "searching WiDrive" - makes sense since there was no WI-FI Network available for Wi-Drive. Later, much later, about 15 minutes, a "Wi-Drive (with an IP Number) showed up on the iPad network settings and I was able to connect to the drive in the iPad. Then I opened the WiDrive App and it showed "Loading WiDrive"...I waited thinking it was loading my media into the app for my viewing pleasure...but no. So I went back to iPad Networking and noticed I was back on my primary WIFI network - assume the WiDrive dropped out somewhere...So, after many attempts, and about 30 mins of fussing, repeating steps, FINALLY, the Wi-Drive (with an IP Number) popped up on the WiDrive App. Viola I think, NOW it's working, yea. BUT my exhilaration was short lived. It did let me play a song, but when I PAUSED the song to select a movie, the movie looked like it loaded a bit of the media, and the play button was working (went to the pause image)...then it started oscillating between the Play and Pause while the media that HAD been loaded, went away and the download progress was reset. ALL THE WHILE, the song I had played and put on pause, kept restarting. I would have thought changing from Music to a Movie would put that song on hold permanently, but NOPE...Buggy. At times like this you have to appreciate Apple for not having buggy crap - it just works. So, Argghhhh!!! I tried several movies that were drag and dropped into my WiDrive Movie Folder from iTunes (purchased movies, not cheap junk)...no luck and that dang song kept starting itself over and over again. I checked to see if the movies were of the correct format - yep M4V.So, I thought I would go to the iNet Archive Library of Free stuff DB and downloaded some MPEG4...THOSE played fine. And yes, that song just keeps on playing. So I finally closed the app to terminate that nonsense and tried everything again...no joy.So, I thought, perhaps if I drag and drop the movie from iTunes to the desktop, then into the WiDrive that'd be better, but NOPE...it wasn't and was simply wasted time. Transferring data by the way, is painfully slow. Much like any other handheld Flash drive...I keep thinking if I remove the case, I'll find a flash fob under the cover...nothing special for sure. So, bottom line:Networking on this device is very, very slow to initiate. The WiDrive software is so full of bugs it's impossible to guess where to begin fixing all these problems. Here is how I feel about it, I can carry all the music I want anyway, but movies, not so many and since that's where the WiDrive was SUPPOSED to do in order to satiate my lust for storage in an elegant way, and since it DOES NOT, I'll be returning this rush to the marketplace drive as soon as possible. It's an interesting START to a device that sounds wonderful, but save your money and wait for V2 - That's my opinion, basically it does not work as described.Addendum 29 August 2012 - After continuing to fiddle with this thing a couple day I will add to my original comments as follows:Apparently the video I provided shows what happens when DRM (Digital Rights Management) kicks in...starts to load, then stops. In a nutshell, you should know the WD network is slow - usually a few mins after powering up the drive, the network finally comes up.IMPORTANT NOTE - DRM media, like movies/TV you've bought from Apple (with DRM added) do not play directly from the WiDrive App (as noted in the manual)You can however, play them in your browser using the IP Address of the WiDrive - 192.168.200.254. There's nothing about that in the Kingston Wi-Drive manual that I read, but oddly enough, after researching the subject and coming way too close to purchasing a $49 DRM stripper/conversion software, I found a YouTube video FROM KINGSTON, that explains how to make it happen. Considering this device is intended to use with an iPad, iTouch, iPhone, that seems to be a pretty important bit of information for most anyone buying this device. At any rate, it's an easy fix, so happy to have found the answer I was looking for.1) Connect WiDrive to Computer

I have an iPhone 5 with 16 GB memory and found that there was not much space left for any movies and TV shows, I was considering selling my iPhone and buying a 32 GB one, when my friend recommended this to me. I would recommend this to my friends too, with a few caveats.Basically, this drive has a small WiFi antenna built in and can beam its files through the air. It's useful, and works with all kinds of iPhones, Androids, and all kinds of computers. The app is relatively easy to use, but I can only speak for the iOS app. The drive can stream movies to up to three devices, though I haven't tried over 2. I've streamed a 720p video to two devices with no lag whatsoever. It's very small and light, about the size of an iPhone 5, but thinner and lighter. A useful function is the bridge connection that allows you to connect to the WiDrive and the internet through WiFi. It's easy to set up, and Kingston has provided videos of the process. The construction is plastic, but its strong enough, and will hold up to some abuse. Now for some more negative points. After turning it on, this drive takes a while to "boot up". It takes some time for the drive's WiFi signal to be found on devices, though this is not a huge problem. The drive also has the tendency to get hot very quickly. The battery lasted only 3 hours for me, but there were two devices streaming video from it, so if that played a part, that seems reasonable. The plastic surface is also a fingerprint magnet. There's an alternative: it's the Seagate GoFlex. While the Kingston drive uses flash memory and can be small and light, it's limited to a maximum storage of 64 GB, which, for extending my smartphone's memory, is more than enough. The GoFlex is essentially a HDD with a WiFi adapter, which allows it to store more files, but also makes it bigger and heavier. This may be a better alternative for people who need this kind of "portable NAS". The app on the iOS store is still not updated for the longer screen of the iPhone 5, but I have contacted Kingston support and they said they are planning to release it by the end of December. As a result of this smaller screen, videos played through the app cannot use the entire screen. I did find a temporary fix. It's possible to use the WiDrive through the Safari (or Chrome) browser in the iPhone, which allows full use of the screen. Just type in the ip address of the drive (192.168.200.254) Just add a bookmark, and it should be a good temporary fix.Take note that on iOS devices, it can only play iPhone supported video filesPros:Cheap way to add storage to smartphones (like iPhones, or the HTC One X) that don't have expandable SD card storage.Easy setup and useLight and compact, uses flash memory, so no spinning drives like the Seagate GoFlex3 Devices can connect at once (may be a con, depending on personal preference)Fast streamingBridge connection allows access to the WiDrive and the Internet at the same time. (Unfortunately, due to the iOS's own WiFi over LTE priorities, this bridge connection only works with a WiFi connection)Cons:Gets hot quickly (doesn't affect performance, as far as I can tell)Smaller storage than the Seagate GoFlex (I'm okay with this, as I haven't even filled up at 32 GB yet)Still uses USB 2.0 speedsTakes a while before the WiFi signal is broadcast (I'm impatient okay.)Only 3 Devices can be connected at oncePlastic construction (its lightweight, but I would have liked something more sturdy)Fingerprint Magnet (I'm picky about such things)I can't seem to get subtitles to work in the videosFinal notes: I like this drive a lot, I got it for $50 on sale (for 32 GB) and has found it extremely easy to use. It gets hot sometimes, but that doesn't seem to be a problem. I've found that this can be used while charging, but only if it's connected to the device before it's plugged in. This trick doesn't work if it's charging from a computer though. Also, subtitles don't work (so far) in the video application, and also doesn't work from the browser. All in all, I would recommend this drive for anyone looking for a cheap, light, and small "wireless NAS" drive and doesn't need more than 64 GB.

It comes with a standard miniUSB charging/data cable (not microUSB) and a nice 1amp USB outlet charger that folds quite flat. The very first thing I did was to back up all the files that came with the WiDrive onto my hard drive and then upload a 3.8 GB WTV file to test it out.The wired USB transfer speed to upload files however is mind numbingly SLOW. Less than 5MB/Sec. I do not have the patience to put anything on here. It would take 4 to 5 hours to copy 64GB to this drive (vs 20 min to fill up my 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive).I turned on my phone's WiFi and unplugged the WiDrive from the computer to activate its WiFi.There is a 30 second delay between pushing the on button and the wifi light blinking and then another 20 seconds for it to become usable on your phone.Although the WiDrive Android App would not recognize WTV files as video files, if I renamed the extension to MPG, they played just fine. Since I have my Android App Associations for StreamingLink and OnlineVideoDownload both set to MXPlayer, the WiDrive app opened it in MX Player just as I had hoped.I also discovered that all the functionality is also available via the web browser and the WiDrive app is not necessary. You can just use a web bookmark to 192.168.200.254 instead to browse the files and click on the Config folder to get to the exact same configuration screen one would get via the Android App. The advantage of this method is that you can easily copy the link (long press and choose CopyLinkAddress) and paste it into MX Players Network Stream option and my 3.8 GB WTV file played flawlessly without renaming the extension.Despite how slow the drive seems to be, my phone had no problems whatsoever with the speed it received the FHD video file in order to play it and it even allowed me to jump ahead to skip commercials. Nice.Next I tried to format it with NTFS (I copied the files back afterwards) and repeated the process again with exFAT, but either way, I was unable to see my files via a WiFi connection on either my Droid DNA phone or my notebook computer. It looks like FAT32 is required (along with FAT32's 4GB limit and easily corruptable FAT table). It seems like they tried to make it hackable, but no one has yet done so. You can download the source code from Kingston's Support webpage and the WiFi on the WiDrive and all the code and apache files are readily visible and since it sits behind a web brower, Android would not care what file system it uses and the Seagate GoFlex Satellite uses NTFS. When I asked, they replied that future versions would solve the 4GB problem.I am not looking forward to cutting up or re-encoding every file over 4GBAnother potential issue I foresee is that one cannot use this and LTE at the same time (on my phone LTE turns off whenever WiFi is active). As pointed out elsewhere, you can plug it into an outlet (not the computer) after the WiFi connection is established to use it without draining the battery. It got very hot while charging. Keep it well ventilated.I am able to browse files (full read/write access) with my computer using the wifi connection (instead of usb) in windows explorer by opening \\192.168.200.254\ . However the wireless upload speed was even slower yet.My computer would not let me connect until I first set up a password on the WiDrive's WiFi Access. Before I did that, it just kept asking for the 8 digit code on my router (there is none).I am able to connect to my home internet connection and home networked computers just fine. Again, it slowed down my cable internet access.Plugging the USB cable into my OTG cable into my DNA phone did not work. I suspect because it sees the CDROM partition and not the FAT32 partition. It is partitioned into two drives. Most of the "code" that you will never use yourself is on the read-only CDROM partition and there is a FAT32 partition for you to use.I was torn between this and the Seagate GoFlex Satellite.-64GB of low battery power usage, shock resistant, slow, tiny with decent reviews for $89vs-500GB of high battery power usage, fragile, fast, larger, NTFS!, with many bad reviews for $136In the end, I returned it.

I looked over the available units and thought that of all the bad reviews this unit had, it couldn't be all the fault of the users. No product would survive with this many bad reviews, so i bit the bullet and bought it.When i received it, the unit was sleek, nice looking and i had a good feeling about it. So i charged it up, powered it up and tried to connect via my ipad just to see how it works just like we all see in the videos. Well, my ipad saw the wi drive network and connected to it, but when i went to the wi drive software, it sat there spinning its wheel.I figured that it needed some media to find, so i connected to my home network via usb and a computer and grabbed some random files to try the music, video, and photo gallery portions. I then reconnected it to my ipad and when i opened the software this time, it had the drive and all the media shown.Great, that was quick, i thought. Sadly this was the last good thought i would have about this device.I tried to play a .mov file to see how it does with files it can play. It was slow to stream the files, but that was compared to other media playing programs i use which store the media files locally, so i chalked that lag up to its internal network. But the same happened with the mp3 files i tried to play as well. It is just a little slow on the uptake of the stream. Photos were viewable, but lacking any type of maneuverability. All of these problems could be network lag, or just it is a slow drive (for a flash drive???).Next i tried some non supported file formats to see how it allows a user to open the files with another program. It seems that it wants to download the file into the main memory of the ipad, but when i try to figure out where it stores it, it doesnt seem to store it anywhere. I disconnected the drive and the file disappeared from the media playing program i was using. I tried to play the same media file after i reconnected the drive and it had to download it to My ipad again. Useless feature.Ok, well, i figured regardless of its drawbacks, i can still make this work for my family as a media server as long as the bridge mode works fine. I can sum it up in one word but it would not make it into this review.Bridge mode does work, as long as you remember to cycle the power and programs on your receiving device.But.....I tried all my tests again with the same parameters, except that it was in bridge mode through my network. Here is where it fails epically. It appears that it grabs an IP address from your DHCP server to connect to the network. Not a problem. But then it uses that same IP address as the connection to your device on its own network. Therefore, creating a second network separated, but connected to your primary LAN. Normally this can be done with just a switch that doesn't run a DHCP server but hey, it appears that kingston decided to leave all this in place. As a result, my primary router started going nuts saying it was being attacked from inside my LAN and shut down all connections. Oops...Well, what happens if i use my cheap backup router that isn't as touchy as the first one. Connect it up and BAM now For some reason, it got into the rest of my network and made some setting changes so i lost 2 wireless printers, a wireless laptop and an apple tv box. It will take me a little while to straighten out the mess.None of my computers saw any virus activity, or virus like activity, so i am pretty certain that the device does not have any malicious intent, but, it did do some setting changes that i will have to sift through and figure out what it did and why.Needless to say, 4 hours of playing with the pretty box is going to be a day of combing through logs and sorting out the mess... And yeah, it is already boxed up with a return label to amazon...
