I admit I wasn't too happy with this at first since there was no paper instructions for using it just the layout guide. I did a lot of hit and miss scans and not happy with quality. It took loading Silverfast to clear things up with the scanner. using the demo software helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I was able to go back to the Epson software and explore. The thumbnail scan was what was making me confused because it never aligned the negatives properly. I had to go to normal view and then scan the negative. Doing that I was able to get 35mm and 120 film to capture correctly. Its taken time but now I am able to get quality images that the photolab couldn't do with my negatives. I am sure as my experience grows I'll get even better images. For quality and output I'd give this an A+. For intuitive use of advanced features a C. But this is based on my experience curve at this point. I would recommend this for the home film enthusiast wanting to scan their own film and photos with great quality.

SWEET! A very nice scanner for the price. Quality is superb. My aunt purchased the more expensive V700 series a few years ago and this is very close to the same quality for a much smaller price. Personally, I don't recommend you use the scanner software in any other mode than Professional. The best solution for this scanner, software, and the end results that I've found are as follows:- Use Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements)- Use Import...\Twain 32 inside PS- Use the Scanner Software in Professional Mode- For standard photos, use: Document type: Reflective, Document Source: Document table, Auto Exposure Type: Photo, Image Type: 24-Bit Color (for saving as JPG, 48-Bit Color for saving as TIFF or JP2 (need free photoshop plugin for that). Resolution 600dpi (only do 1200 or 2400 if scanning slides or negatives.) Target Size: original. Use Auto Exposure option and check unsharp mask, but uncheck everything else (play around with others if you wish).- After you scan the image to PS, you can do an auto levels and any other things to it you wish (like crop, rotate, etc.)Personally I scan my images to a non-data loss (lossless) JPG format, .JP2. It's not very compatible outside of viewer programs though and the size is around 25-30MB per image. You can't save a 48-bit image to JPG though. Only 24-bit scans will save to JPG format. If you want all the color depth this scanner can give you, you'll need to save as a TIF or JP2.This scanner will give you a great scanned photo, better than all the other scanners I've used in the past, except maybe the $800-$1000 pro scanners. The quality is very close to pro, so unless you must have a pro scanner and know what I mean, go with this one and don't look back. You won't regret it. Good Luck Scanning!

I purchased the Epson Perfection V600 flatbed scanner from Amazon as a back-up unit on April 1, 2011. The scanner remained unpacked and unused until a few weeks ago. It worked very well at 1200 dpi for about 3 days, then started giving me "Epson Scan quit unexpectedly" signs. Attempts to "reopen" were useless, as were attempts to successfully install drivers from Epson. The scanner is robust and functional, so I think it's a software problem. Whatever it is, it has resulted in diminished production and falling behind on my end. I'll probably have to buy a replacement scanner before I can get this one fixed.I don't think I'll buy EPSON scanners in the future. Even small businesses need confidence in their tools, and at present, this one's as confidence-building as a doorstop!Roland H. Cunningham

The text says "The Epson Perfection V600 Photo delivers outstanding quality scans from photos, film, slides and everyday documents. With 6400 x 9600 dpi resolution, this high performance scanner ensures precision film scanning for sharp, vivid reproductions up to 17" x 22"." That means from a printer you will be able to print up to 17" x 22", not SCAN that large. The scan area is 8.5" x 11". Physical product dimensions should give you the first clue "Product Dimensions: 19 x 11 x 4.6 inches"

I purchased this scanner after searching high and low for a scanner that scans multiple sizes of film. The epson V600 performs well past my expectations. Although a little slow, the quality output of old film and photos it produces is unsurpassed. The software that comes with the scanner pretty much does all the photo editing for you. With the ICE technology it removes the flaws and dust from the photos and film. I have read that the ICE technology shouldn't be used with negative film, this I haven't tried for myself. It also has a "dust removal" option instead of the ICE is time is a virtue. Either way this scanner performs great.

I bought this to scan my family slides and color negatives from 40-50 years ago. I last tried to do this in the '90s, but the consumer-grade scanners of that time weren't up to the task. I'm glad to report that this scanner was a worthwhile purchase. It was easy to install and use, and the high resolution scans I am getting from it are very satisfactory. I scan at 2400 dpi, but the unit is capable of higher resolutions. This device might not satisfy a pro (it scans 4 slides at a time, and has limited workflow features) but it has met all my expectations.

Don't get too worked up by the negative reviews calling the Epson Scan software "junk." It isn't. I read enough of the other reviews to convince me to download a copy of Vuescan and try it out right away. True, Vuescan has a lot of film profiles that should be more accurate than the limited number Epson uses, but the trouble with Vuescan and this V600 scanner--in my experience--is that the frames for batch scanning a group of negatives were not accurate, and it was more than a little confusing, if not impossible, to change the frames around. This feature of Vuescan is very confusing your first couple of times around, and I lost patience and shut the program down. Then, thinking I'd better try the Epson software before considering returning the scanner, I opened Epson Scan. I went straight to "Professional" mode, checked out all the parameters they allow adjustment to, selected what I wanted, and clicked "Preview." This is scanning two strips of negatives, mind you. When the preview came up, it had all twelve frames boxed in their own boxes, all basically color-corrected and ready for action. You select a check-box to pick which frames you want to scan, and click on each separate frame to diddle with it--like rotate it to the proper orientation, or change the exposure, whatever. Then just hit "Scan" and walk away. When it finishes you have all your selected scans in your "My Pictures" folder or wherever you want them, named whatever you want with "001", "002" and so-on appended to the name. It is easy as pie, and the quality is on par with any scanner I've used so far. Speed? For a 2400 dpi neg scan much less than a minute per scan. Now some caveats. I'm not running Digital ICE, not doing any kind of sharpening, nothing. All I want is a raw scan; all the fiddling you want to do is better done afterwards in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, it does a much better job. If your negatives need all kinds of cleaning, or if they're all scratched up and require a lot of correcting in the scan, you screwed up. Take care of your negs and slides, keep them clean, and you won't have problems scanning them. You can clean them with a quick wipe with a lint-free cloth with a little rubber cement thinner on it--just don't use anything water-based on negs and slides. Secondly, just for grins I loaded a magazine page into the scanner and tried out the OCR software, ABBYY. They claim that it can scan and convert printed text into type. If you've had any experience with OCR software, you probably take that claim with a large grain of salt, like I did. But one quick scan--greyscale, 400 dpi--and the page was up on the screen. Pull it into Microsoft Word and it was 100 percent accurate, every word spelled correctly, even the closest font was selected for the text. An incredible job, in my opinion. What's my qualifications? I've been working with images my whole professional life. 40 years of photography or more, working with digital images since they first came out. I've owned a dozen different flatbed scanners and a couple of film scanners. You might be able to get better results from a more expensive scanner, but for the money this Epson V600 is tough to beat. Highly recommended. And give the included software a chance, you'll probably like it just fine.

I received this hoping to scan boxes of family photos. So far it has been working great. It is big. So make sure you have the desk or floor space for it.Pros: Takes high quality scans. Can scan slides and negatives (not the best quality though) Multiple ways for opening (for books) Fairly fast (when touch ups are off) Seems well built (can survive cats on it) Can scan multiple images at once Great qualityCons: Flimsy top. You take this out for scanning slides and negatives. Digital ICE is not perfect. It will try to "fix" patterns and shadows. Speed when using digital ICE. It drastically slows from 1 minute to sometimes 10. The Epson scan software is slow and difficult. I wouldn't get this if your not good ate computers or have some time to really learn it.Overall I am pleased with this device. The Pros out way the cons. I have scanned countless pictures with it. The software that come with it isn't the best but it does work if you know how to tweek it to your liking. Some have said it doesn't scan documents well but I have seen now problems with it. I believe if Epson could step up the software a little bit more they would really have a winner.

This is my first scanner so there is no past experiences. I made the decision to get it largely by reading other reviews here and on YouTube. I gave it three stars.I realize that the difference between this scanner and others comparable to it are a matter of degree, so I did not return it for a refund. The scanner itself is good if one doesn't ask too much of it. If one tries to play photo/studio engineer with it, forget it. Don't fiddle with the settings too much. Don't try to get too technical with the settings in an attempt to get "Perfection". It won't happen.Although the scanner goes a good job, it is like the scanner is the one calling the shots at times. Too often the scanner takes control -- ha ha. I mean it too often has the last word on what settings to use. Of course it will let me have my way with the settings, but the product ends up coming out worse at times: blurring, smudgy areas will become part of the finished upload. One can probably buy another scanner that is just as good for a little less.

This is a good scanner in general. I don't need to reiterate the consensus of most reviews on here, but I wanted to add that I've just discovered that the bundled OCR (Optical Character Recognition, for extracting text from scans) is not compatible with Mac OS 10.7 Lion. The software is ABBYY FineReader Express, but the version supplied is a PowerPC application, so the installer won't even run on 10.7.I contacted Epson about this, and they simply replied that the bundled software is current at the time of the product's release. Though this product is a year or two old, it is still sold as a current product by retailers and Epson directly, so I strongly feel they have an obligation to support current OS users and back up their claim of OCR capability. What's more, ABBYY has released a 10.7-compatible version of FineReader, so I see no reason that Epson couldn't start bundling this or at least giving users an option to download it.I expected better of you, Epson.

Works great as a general scanner. Hi-res scanning IS SLOW. Digital ICE doesn't work on all scans (cleans up dust and scratches...but when it does work it's really nice. Regular photo prints, photo negatives and documents are flawless...slides less so. The dust reduction on slides is poor and the carrier is difficult to load. I'd recommend this overall, but if you want to convert a lot of slides you may want to look elsewhere.

Great scanner for the money! This scanner does a wonderful job of converting your negatives to digital images. The user's manual is pretty cut-and-dry, so it will take some time to figure it out how to get just what you want from it. But be patient and hang in there, because it is well worth it! This machine will scan your images higher than even Wolf Camera will, (their highest resolution they will scan is 4000 dpi). So it will certainly save you money to scan them yourself in that range, and then let Wolf make your large prints, especially if you have a large body of work you need printed.Prior to buying this item, I had been considering investing in darkroom equipment to reprint thousands of my old studio negatives, but decided instead to take a gamble on this scanner. Glad I did! Buy it, and you'll love it, too.My only qualm was that my Mac runs on a different processor than the included photoshop program needs to download and run, so that was essentially a dog frisbee for me. But I'm not looking for a magic wand, anyway. So, if the installer says, "does not support this architecture," then you'll know you don't have the right computer processor.

I wanted a scanner specifically for digitalizing old photos. After scouring the internet for reviews of different products I ordered this and couldn't be happier! Aside from the high quality output (I haven't seen any need to further enhance the photos, even though the software is included) I'm thoroughly impressed that I can just place 1-6 photos anywhere on the scanner and it scans them up as individual photos perfectly aligned, etc. It couldn't be easier and takes about 15sec per scanning session (max). The only set-up was plugging in the cables and hitting "Scan", so it couldn't be easier. I also just used for scanning some documents and it was similarly easy and quick; for documents it will convert to a PDF file when you're done. VERY happy with this purchase and with the purchase price on Amazon!

I replaced my old scanner and after reading numerous reviews, I settled on this one. I needed one for 35mm slides and negatives. It was easy to setup and is doing a better job than I thought it would. I know that there is a more expensive V700, but ath the price this does well. I am an advanced photographer and make photo books. This will do just fine, especially with the adjustments. I already use AdobeElements 9, so I did not need the one included. But, it makes further adjustments very well.

I have been using this scanner for about two weeks and it has been great so far. I have scanned 500 plus pictures with great results. The scanner is very user-friendly, thought it took me a little getting used to the software it comes with.My advice to anyone scanning color photos - use the color restoration feature even if you don't necessarily think the photos needs it. It REALLY brightens up the colors. I am extremely impressed at how bright it has made my faded old photographs. I wish I had used it on some of the first photos I scanned that I didn't think it needed it. In fact, I am contemplating going back to rescan those to really improve the quality of my output. The only con I have experienced so far is that it can be a bit slow to "warm up" at times. It seems to take twenty minutes or more when I first start it up but then after two or three times of scanning it only takes about three to four minutes to scan three pictures.
