hello, since we were ready to do our color slides to pc process, we needed a simple, but elegant looking dedicated scanner. the epson v600 was rated very high by most non amazon sites and within amazon's reviews,..excellent. this is just what we needed, it looks great, doesn't take up a lot of space, and the set up within my home network was simple. with a few color ektachrome, kodachrome, fujicolor slides for a test, i ran off a few practice runs, i do not know how it does it, but the color differences in all of the test slides was difficult as the mix was very eclectic. colorful motorcycles, ocean scenes, wild painted cars, people, and one ocean sunset with clouds. this epson v600 scanned each one of the four in the tray and transferred it to my pc with ease. the color reproduction was very clear and concise. when the epson was finished scanning the set of four, it simply put them in the direct folder i had designated for the project. it did not take very long to do and since i have some spare time, i can scan when i want to do the job, leave it for awhile, then pick up where i left off. the slides will be scanned onto a spare 1tb external hard drive i purchased from amazon and will be hooked up to my network via usb. the drive is large enough to store tons of stuff, but small enough to put in a safe deposit box. epson made a great product, amazon delivers again....update: i recently scanned some color slides from 1967, 1971, and 1973. they were taken with a great 35mm camera and fast lens. the images now on my computer look as if i was back in those days actually setting up the shots. crystal clear and a true an image as i have ever seen. just make sure you blow off any dust particles that may have found its way onto the slides. i cannot be more excited to go through all of the slides as i am converting them to my computer. epson quality is what i read all of the time, somewhere, well, here it is in the present. thanks for a great product and service.update two: i have been using the scanner for about a month, now. so far, over 200 slides. several things popped up that you should know: when the scanner is turned on, sometimes the epson scan screen comes on. make sure that the setting is for "full auto mode" if you want the machine to scan the 4 individual slides or film strips. otherwise, any other settings will scan the complete tray, slides and anything else you have on the full glass plate. you probably will have to use your photo program to look for random lint and other stuff that gets on the image. i cleaned each slide and somehow, the old slides still had dust flecks in random areas. i had a few beach shots and there were more flecks than usual. the photo program "repair tool" took care of the flecks. now the 40 year old slides look like i just took them yesterday. the color images usually did not take much to get them to near perfect color resolution. but, yrmv...update march 08, 2013: for all of the time obsessed fanatics: this epson v600 scanner does one ektachrome color positive slide from the 60's in 1 minute 35 secs. if you fill up the 4 slide holder and scan all of them on full auto mode, then it will take about 6 minutes and 33 secs. just enough time to read an article and listen to several songs. i am almost finished scanning with my endless color positive slides from the ages. i have been told to keep two versions of the color slides on an external hard drive: one in the original scan mode (dust flecks, sun intrusions, candle darkness, weird angles, etc) to keep the feeling of moment. but as a photographer, i also make a set with all of the dust and imperfections corrected out of the photos. i like these the best. it makes the memories and slides near perfect. it does not take up a lot of room on the external hard drive, so both versions will stay. it is not that bothersome to make two files/folders of each set of color slides.one tip: when the scanner is finished with the 4 slides, make sure the slides are right side up and left to right correct. there is nothing worse than a sign or a license plate in the background reading backwards... when you go through a slide show later.

Плохо

The good:The scanning resoultion is exceptional for the price. The scanner hardware and epson software work well with an old Mac G4 cube. (With the exception of the Adobe Photoshop Elements noted below.)The color correction works well on different kinds of color negatives and prints. There is no warm-up time. The scanner can be used immediately after turning on.If "unsharp mask" is used, the focus works very well, even if the negatives curl slightly so that the center of the negative is closer to the scanner glass thatn the rest of the negative. It also focuses very well if the negatives are placed directly on the scanner glass. The images do not show any distortion, even if the negatives have a little curl, as long as they are in the holder. The bad:The bundled Adobe Photoshop Elements software is useless if you are scanning with an older Mac. It will not install. The scanner I received has some sort of goo, perhaps adhesive, on the inside of the glass. It is not in the scanning area for negatives, but it shows up on prints. Epson was willing to take the scanner back and refund my money, but getting the unit to a repair center would have been at my expense, even though they would cover the cost of the actual repair. I chose not to bother because I had an immediate need for the scanner for a project on a tight timeline. Since I was only scanning negatives for the project, I just kept using the unit. I have heard that a repair would introduce dust into the unit, and once the unit is opened, it may require repeated cleaning of the inside of the glass. I consider myself fortunate that there is no dust inside the unit, and I am just going to leave it alone. The glass scanning surface is set slightly lower than the rest of the scanner bed. This makes it impossible to do any large format scanning of pictures larger than the scanner glass. On many other scanners, you can scan large pictures in pieces, and put them together in photoshop. That is not possible with this scanner. The negative holders are flimsy, and the medium format negative holder does not hold the negatives securely. If the negatives are in very good condition, this is not much of an issue. If the negatives are curled, it is necessary to place them directly on the scanner glass and place another piece of glass on top of them to hold them down. The scanner software will not recognize the negative sizes in this case, so the marquees have to be added manually. This is not difficult.Sometimes the software does not correctly recognize the negative sizes. If you need to reduce the scan area within a negative, that is easy to do, but sometimes it does not correctly recognize where a negative ends, and the pictures are broken into meaningless fragements. When this occurs, there is no easy way to override the software and put in marquees manually unless you remove the negative holder and redo the preview of the negatives set directly on the glass.Everything looks slightly out of focus unless unsharp mask is used. This bothers me because it should be possible to scan photos and negatives without unsharp mask. I have heard that adjusting the height of the negatives will help get them into focus, I have not had any luck varying the heights to get better focus. Artifical sharpening would not be necessary if the scanner would focus correctly.Epson technical support is absolutely horrible. Their sales staff do not understand the product line, and the technical support staff take forever to get back to you, and then have no more knowledge than the information on the Epson website."Digital ICE" can do very wierd things to images. On black and white negatives, it often removes the eyes. When it removes large scratches and tears from photos, it often makes a big smeared mess of the repaired section. Much better results can be achieved by taking the time to do these corrections manually in photoshop. I have had occasional very good results with this feature, but I very seldom find that it is worth using.I am primarily scanning black and white negatives, but for color prints I have been having some difficulty with color. The reds have an overly intense quality, and the faces often have a reddish-pink tinge. I have viewed the images on several different monitors, and althought the images do not always look the same, the faces still often have a pink look to them. Since the color prints I am scanning are very old, and always require color correction, I am not sure whether it is the scanner calibration or the images that are the problem.Conclustion:Overall, this scanner has been very useful, within its limitations. I think it is worth the price, for what I have managed to produce with it. I would not buy this particular scanner again because:I don't need "digital ICE".The option of being able to scan large format negatives is more valuable than I originally realized. I have been either cropping them by only scanning a portion of them, scanning them in two pieces and putting the

I would give this device zero stars if possible, but then I assume there are those out there that may enjoy spending hours in a hopeless endeavor to actually make this work.I am an engineer and not a novice at setting up computers and peripheral devices. After several attempts to connect the scanner -- all unsuccessful -- I resorted to contacting Epson Customer Support (I could contact them only via email) I sent a very detail explanation of what was attempted so far -- They replied promptly with some suggestions I had not tried -- but all their suggestions were predicated on the scanner being recognized by my computer -- which was the issue that I was having in the first place.I never got the device connected, so I have no information on the quality of the scans.I do not recommend this product or its manufacturer's customer support at all!Review UpdateI emailed Epson and informed them that the things they wanted me to try to connect this scanner to my computer did not work! I also asked for a return merchandize authorization and a shipping credit since I would be returning the unit. The very next day, someone from Epson Customer Relations called (yes actually telephoned) and offered to connect me with their tech support people who would undoubtedly fix my problem.I unpacked the scanner and called tech support. The tech support person told me after some cursory questions -- and without reviewing my file -- that the problem was with Windows and not the Epson Software. I offered up the fact that the Windows error message clearly stated the the issue was with their software and to contact the company who sold me the scanner. Tech Support then told me that he had successfully connected many scanners to computers with my Operating System -- so I had to be wrong. But we decided to go through the setup process in case I had messed up something in my previous 5 tries. Then as I started through the setup process (now for the sixth time) we mysteriously got disconnected (I believe it was initiated on the Epson side though I can't prove it).Just to confirm that the issue was not a Windows Problem -- I ran several diagnostics which all pointed to issues with the Epson Software. This may in fact be an OK scanner (I'll never know). But if you purchase this device and have any trouble at all -- do not count on Epson Tech Support -- worst experience I have ever had -- will never buy or recommend another Epson Product

Had to buy another scanner for prints and slides because I upgraded to Win 7 which was not supported by my last scanners. You also had to put the pics in a holder and they took a lot of time to process. I choose this scanner because it is a flatbed type and requires no holders. It also processes slides and film strips and comes with the adapters that you use. I can now do all my conversions with one scanner. to date I have done over 500 photo scans and found the process to be easy and quick. I have been using the fully auto mode and found it to work fine on most photos. The default resolution is 300dpi and this works for me unless I will need to Crop or enlarge the photo and in that case I use the max resolution of 1200dpi. The image processing time is only a few seconds at 300dpi and less than 10 sec at 1200dpi. If you change the resolution it stays at that setting untill you change it and the files are of course much larger. In the fully auto mode the screen attempts to show what type of photo you are scanning, but I found that it shows color print when it is B&W. The scanned picture comes out just fine any way.I do not edit any of the photos except for rotation which is easy to do with just two clicks of the mouse before the file is saved. The whole process in auto mode only takes two presses of the Photo button on the front panel of the scanner. When you press the photo button the first time it automatically brings up the interface on the computer and the second press will start the scan and after a few seconds the screen shows the picture and you can see the orientation and what it looks like. If no action is taken for about 5 seconds the scanner then finnishes the scan, if you see a problem there is a cancel button that stops the scan and you can start over. The scanner is rectangler in shape with the narrow end being the front and back. The lid opens on the back side which means when you open the lid it requires a lot of space above it. The input connections are on the back, but the power switch is on the right side? I would have liked the lid to open from the side instead of from the end, just my prefferance. So far I have only done photos and am very satisfied with the time it takes to do a scan, the quality of the scan, and the ease of use. Would buy again.

So far, I am well pleased with this product. The color correction software has removed most of the yellow cast on pictures from the early 1900s and the picture quality looks as good or better than the originals since the scanned images are not as yellow and are clear and brighter than the originals. I used 300 dpi resoluton for the B&W documents and 1200 dpi resolution for the B&W photos. The documents scan quickly, maybe less than 15 seconds and the photos are taking around 3 minutes. The 1200 dpi resolution lets me enlarge the old images and keep a nice clear image so I think it is well worth the additional scan time. I will post more here as I get into the color photos. So far, I have used the fully automated scan option with very good results. And this has been a snap to do. I am very pleased, as I said.8-27-2001 Edit: I have scanned in several hundred B&W photos following the suggested spacing, of multiple photos on the scanner bed, of at least 0.80 inch. This worked well until last night when the multiple images were not scanned into separate .jpeg files rather into a single .jpeg file. I entered a problem report on the Epson Support Website and received the following response:I am sorry to hear that you are now unable to scan multiple photos at a time. The following information should help resolve the issue.Launch Epson Scan (if applicable).Under Home or Professional mode, please click on Configuration at the bottom part of Epson Scan.On the Configuration window, click on the Other tab, and click on Reset All.Confirm restoring of Epson Scan. Then launch or open it up again then try scanning. If the issue persists, you may need to reinstall Epson Scan.I performed all of these steps including a reinstall of the Epson Scan software and the problem persists. I have resubmitted a new problem report as they suggested. I will edit this review as I learn more and try their new recommendations.09/02/11 Edit: I received this email from tech support:Thank you for contacting Epson regarding your Epson Perfection V600 Photo. It is my pleasure to respond to your inquiry. My apologies for the trouble you are having with your Epson Scanner. If you have checked all of your settings in the software and confirmed you have the thumbnail option selected, and you confirm that you images are separated as per the guidelines you may have a hardware issue with your scanner. Please provide us with a serial number so we can check your warranty status. If your scanner is still within its one-year replacement warranty from the original date of purchase please contact the Epson Connection at 562-276-4382 when you are with your computer and scanner setup. The representative will assist you with a brief telephone diagnostic to confirm the need for replacement. The next day I booted the computer and, before calling Epson tech support, thought I would give the Full Auto Mode one more try. This time the B&W photos scanned properly into separate .jpeg files. I decided to call tech support, as I couldn't figure out how to select the Thumbnail Option, and just to be sure that this was not an intermittent problem. The email stated that they would have me run some diagnostic tests and I thought that this sounded like a good idea. However all that the tech support guy was able to suggest was to go into Professional Mode, select Preview and on the screen that appears click on the Thumbnail Tab. Then he suggested, obviously, to do the scans from Professional Mode. Since I have better results with scanning B&W photos in Full Automatic Mode, I will stay with that mode unless I have more problems. I will keep posting to this review as I get into color scanning and discover things. I am keeping my settings recorded in a Word file and will post these here when I arrive at the settings I am happy with. I plan to look and see what exists on the Epson site in the way of a blog on their individual products.

I purchased the Epson scanner for the purpose of scanning and converting to digital a collection of 3000+ 35 mm slides. The slide dates range from the mid 1960's to the mid/late 80's. I was also hoping to scan my own collection of 35mm negatives from the 80's and 90's. I am fairly computer literate, but not an expert. My grandmother recently passed away, and I have "inherited" quite a collection of slides, as well as paper photos. I was looking for something that would allow me to digitize family slides, negatives, and photographs that would allow the family to share the images and allow for an easier way to store the images (versus the box in the closet). Most specialty shops that offer to convert slides to digital images charge around 50 cents a slide, so the cost of scanning the number I have would add up quickly.I had borrowed a "tower" type scanner from a family member--the ones that are similar in size to a desktop computer speaker and scan each image individually. I found the quality from those scans severely lacking. I will not mention the brand in a review forum, but will say that the one I used had dark shading around the edges of all of the slides, and I found the requirement to load the slides/negatives into a plastic holder and then focus and scan each image individually to be extremely tedious. For the number of slides that I have, I could not imagine how much time that would take, and the finished scan image was substandard. I saw the same slides much clearer when using the slide projector that was manufactured in the late 1960's. In my opinion, and from reading other reviews, spend a little extra money for the scanner rather than the tower type converters. While I did not expect the same quality of prints as one would get from today's higher end digital cameras, I did expect decent quality images, and was greatly disappointed. After online research and speaking to personnel at specialty shops, I decided to order the Epson V600. Wow! What a difference in the quality of the scanned images! The scanner was easy to use from the start, and I have attempted to scan paper photographs, negatives, and slides. The slides are easy to insert, and the images are clear, with no dark fading around the corners as I found with the tower type scanner. Negatives were easy to load, and I love that when scanning negatives that the scanner will automatically recognize each individual image. I have not had the need to use the Photoshop software for correcting images, so although I have "played" with the program, I have not actually had a need for it. The images are coming out very clear, and I am easily able to save them to my computer and plan to later burn them on CD/DVD format for shareable copies of the images. I am extremely happy with the machine and the quality of the images that have been scanned. I could have saved money by buying a less expensive type of converter, but this was money well spent.

The product was neatly packaged and arrived as promised by Amazon. However, that was the only thing that occurred as anticipated. The setup of the scanner on a new iMac with OS 10.8.2 was problematic, despite years of experience. Updated software was to be available online but several pre OS 10.8.2 files were present on the Epson support/download page. However, there were several files without any specific instructions as to what sequence the files were to have been installed. Online instructions from the Epson site indicated that updated software was to have been available from the "App Store", but none were to be had. Finally, the downloaded files from the Epson site did not install. No support, in the usual use of the term, was available from Epson. After striking out with Epson and Apple, an online search identified Yogi, a support site in India, that provided assistance for a cost of $199.95, which was greater than the original cost of the scanner. The scanner, as set up with the help of Good Karma", actually scans images well but the documentation is sparse. The scanner was purchased to copy photographic slides. Indeed 4 slides do get scanned but are scanned into a single image and individual photos are not separated. This is obviously a software issue but no solution is available with the downloaded software, the downloaded documentation, nor online! To say that I am frustrated is an understatement.Epson B11B198011 Perfection V600 Photo Scanner

This is the first scanner of this type for me. After much research online, I chose the Epson V600 with some apprehension. I have been with PCs since the Radio Shack TRS-80. Often the claims don't match real life results. I have put 40 year old negatives, slides and some family pictures from 1924. All with more than satisfactory results. Set up was straight forward and interfaced with my existing Photoshop 7 software without any issues. Being retired, the time for a scan is not an issue, as there is plenty to do preparing the next photo or piece of film. I gave five stars after using it for several hours because it was actually plug and play, no search for drivers no technical glitches, no endless waits for connections. Just load and scan. The Epson software is adequate for the what it needs to do. I would recomend this scanner as being excellent quality for the price. I would like to try a Nikon film scanner, however, I am a few thousand dollars short. Best equipment buy since I discovered off lease HP pc's on Ebay. Scanner did cost more than my PC. I collect old Nikon film cameras and expect to be using the Epson V600 for some time. Results are as good as pictures from my Nikon D90 digital. If it was a good picture to start with. I do not do product reviews very often, as I have found from reading them, everyone's experience is different. But I was quite suprised by this purchase.

Have done almost 2,500 scans so far - mostly color slides. I'm very happy with the product. After much research and some soul searching I bought the Epson instead of a comparable Canon. It does a fantastic job with slides. I've had to do some touch ups with Photo Shop Elements - mostly cropping. I found that the 1,200 dpi setting was more than adequate for slides. In fact, PSE won't accept anything higher with a note saying file is too large. I had PSE 7 and was about to upgrade, so the included PSE 9 was a nice bonus. With the price of getting scans from my local photo dealer + the PSE 9 I figured that the Epson paid for itself the first day of scanning. The photo restoration setting has been most useful for older prints that have started to deteriorate. I've able to reclaim several prints that were really in bad shape. The only issue I've encountered is it sometimes gets confused between landscape and portrait views with low contrast slides. Then I have to play with rotation settings or reposition the slide in the tray.Yes, there is a 12-14 min. lag to scan 4 slides. So I set a timer, do something else, and then load up 4 more slides when the timer goes off. Once I got into a rhythm it was very easy. I'm using a tip that another reviewer mentioned to hold the slide tray in place by using a small piece of tape to hold it on the bottom and top. In this way the tray remains steady while inserting & removing slides.I'd certainly recommend this product - especially for color slides. The resulting scans still retain that "pop" that good color slides have always had!
