I've been able to get excellent indoor and outdoor photos, and even experimented on some night time photos (have to play with the manual settings to get some decent night photos), and even took a picture of the full moon at 40x zoom -- it looks like your looking through a telescope! The only problem I've had with blurred photos was when taking photos at high zoom in poor light. Other than that, the photos have been perfect.
At the time of me writing this, the SX100 has become difficult to find, but Canon just announced the SX110, which should be a worthy upgrade if you cannot find the SX100.
What I wanted was a digital camera that was VERY easy to use and would take GREAT pictures of my very active Grandchildren. The Canon Powershot exceeded my expectations.
The Canon Powershot can go from the box to taking great pictures in just minutes. No special camera batteries needed, which who keeps them on hand, it takes double A. I can and have recommended the Canon Powershot to my family and friends.
Pros:
- lots of features
- small enough to fit in your pocket
- decent zoom
- decent video
Cons:
- bad low-light performance
- too slow for action shots (sports, etc.)
- e18 / lens error
- frequently gives image stabilization warnings, especially in low light
I'm currently in the market for a new camera - my lens just decided to jam itself open for no apparent reason. Reading reviews for Canon Powershot cameras apparently this is endemic to the entire product line. Called Canon and their flat rate service fee is $139 for a camera I could buy refurbished on ebay for $200 so not exactly a bargain. They did offer a "loyalty" program which looks like they give you about a 50% discount off a refurbished SD850, G9 or Rebel XT if you trade in your old S80.
Now I'm trying to decide if I should go for the refurbished SD850 and risk another lens error, or switch to Nikon.
Just wanted to post this review to warn people yet again about problems with the lens in Canon Powershot cameras.
As of November 2008, I cannot recommend any camera without optical (NOT digital!) image stabilization. Canon has been doing IS for years (I have a pair of their IS-empowered binoculars-- also great!), and for the current price of $110, this thing is amazing.
Good luck! But whatever you do, get optical IS!!!
Best price, not big size, not heavy with estabilizer and quite good zoom. I stronlgy recommend the product. I can only say the only awful disadvantage is the battery that it use, a 2 AA instead a digital rechargeable battery such other brands.
will still power flashlights and similar things. Do yourself a favor and invest in rechargeable batteries and a charger for the unit and you will enjoy your camera even more than before - if that is even possible. This is a very nice (and faster to focus) companion to my Canon Digital Rebel XTi.
UPDATE: My camera was repaired after it quit working. Now, 4 months later again, it has DIED AGAIN -- this time in the middle of my son's piano recital. I'm fed up! Do NOT buy this camera. I have contacted Canon customer service and they will be sending out a prepaid shipping label to pick it up. However, I'm forced to buy another camera that will actually work when I need it to!
Great little gadget for the non-techies of this world....BUT it was cheaper in the HIGH STREET.
Easy to use...this is my 4th digital camera and far and away the simplest.
Listen guys and girls, cannon makes better products then this. I have owned the camear for record breaker of 4 months. Im forced to send to canon for another replacement. Trust me when I say, dont buy this camera! Im sorry but its not worth the money.
Sad consumer
