The A630 is much cheaper than the A640 (which comes in black rather than silver and has 10mp). 8 mp is more than enough for this style of camera. Don't pay the extra - it would be a waste!
The main improvement on my old Nikon is the better quality pics under zoom and flash. Previously the pics became very washed out but the Canon is spot on. Remember this is a compact and not an SLR so don't expect perfection for £130 (not on Amazon). It has a 4x zoom which is better than 99% of the cameras out there at this price and this proves very welcome in the real world.
I noticed the weight of the camera immediately. It is heavier without batteries than most and quite wide but still OK for a strong jacket pocket. 4 x AAs make it even heavier but then the quality build and photo quality make up for this.
The main problem is coming to terms with the complicated menus!! It reminded me of the good old pre digital days of the Pentax K1000. You CAN set everything from "film speed" to aperuture size to shutter speed but it is not easy to work it all out (the manual is written in gibberish!). you can experiment or go to stevesdigicam.com for a clearer explanation of what evrything does. So saying the auto mode is pretty idiot proof. So if it's a point and shoot you want then the Canon is that. If you want total control it is there though it will take a long time to set up a shot!!
Uses SD memory cards - 1GB which is more than enough for normal use (don't forget you'll have to take 4 spare AA batteries with you everywhere) and can be picked up for around £6 now
Another joy is the swivel lcd screen. Makes taking pictures of yourself and partner a lot better because you can actually frame the shot, rather than guessing as for most cameras
In conclusion: heavy, well built, good lens & zoom, high picture quality (but remember it is not a £500 SLR), easy to use on auto, complicated on manual. Happy I bought it for quality but not a true pocket compact and not SLR quality but a great price for what it is.
Now lived with it for 4 months or so and find the general picture quality great. Have mastered some of the more complicated manual settings but still don't find this intuitive enough.
Rechargeable batteries last ages with this - just make sure that you get 2500 as these are more powerful and therefore longerlasting

I suggest that you study the manual to become familiar with the camera features. It's an easy read. Plan on burning the provided AA batteries becoming familiar with the camera (comparing the manual to actually testing them out on the camera). It's worth investing the time to truly realize the camera's benefits.
I purchased rechargeable AA batteries rather than continually buying traditional alkaline batteries. AA battery vs. a proprietary rechargeable battery was a feature I was looking for in this type of camera. It doesn't burn through the batteries.
Again - it's a great camera for armature or semi-professional photographers. Good luck!

Use the camera for my hiking adventures and it has never failed me yet. Camera is solid built, easy to handle and the rotating LCD screen is fantastic!

This camera has more settings than even the Nikon D40.
Just not happy with it. That swinging LCD is trouble.

But over all we love it

Would recommend both Canon cameras and this model.

After owning my camera for about 16 months, my camera LCD screen went black. The pictures were black and the camera was useless. I went directly to the Cannon Website and opened a repair. I paid for shipping to them. They actually paid for the repair and they will pay the shipping back to you. In my case worst that would have happend was they tell me it's expensive to fix and they pay to ship it back and I buy a new one. This is the second powershot I have owned, I had a A540 and had no problems with it. I wanted more Mgps.

This is an exquisitely designed camera, beautifully engineered, flexible and simple to use (with a variety of modes). In a nutshell - fantastic value for money!
Thanks Canon - you certainly CAN.....

The zoom power is what I was looking for - its great. I find the handling of the camera comfortable and easy. I have been using a tripod for some shots which gives it great stability for portraits and nature shots. I took it to a Hank Williams concert and only got blurs. I think I need a bit more practice and understanding of the operation of this camera. If you are just stepping up to a better quality camera with more possibilities than a point and shoot, I recommend this one.

expensive camera, for half the price. You'll find it extremely hard to beat, or even match this camera's features for the price... and oh by the way... I found the best price here.
This camera rocks, I can stand outside my back door and point it at a constellation, or group of stars and point and click... and the shot is mine. I couldn't believe how easily it took shots of the stars. Thanks Canon... nice job!

Movie is very grainy in moderate and low light.
I returned the camera and bought another S3IS (mine had been stolen).
Three stars, because other similar cameras seem to be with defects also.
It is like choosing a car, technically a car with have it all should be available at a reasonable price - it is just marketing so you keep searching and buying. Just like XP - Vista - WIndows 7 ...

The camera was sent back to amazon as defective.

I am so glad I did. I was able to take great shots right out of the box. There was no awkwardness with the manual controls, the pictures came out great, and indoor shots were just as fantastic as outdoor shots. As someone else mentioned, pictures indoors with flash really aren't as good as pictures without flash. The auto settings sort themselves out and produce really sweet images.
Someone also mentioned trying to shake the camera to make a blurry picture. I took this one step further. I drove down the highway at 55 mph and took shots perpendicular to the line of travel. They turned out crystal clear.
One of the features I like is the button that lets you view previously taken pictures without turning on your camera. It is nice not to have the lens come out on startup. Sure, you could turn the dial to the Play icon before you power up, but that's an extra step. I really like the simplicity of the one-touch image viewing. Also, to switch to camera mode, just press the shutter and you are ready to take pictures. I have since noticed it on other newer Canons, but my SD800is from 14 months ago didn't have it. It's nice!

Behaving still like a compact camera it has some of the goodies you find on a "big guy", the lenses let you even take super macro pictures (to put the camera as close as you can, even less than 10cm to obtain amazing results). You can attach an extra flash, even a remote controllable one, so that you can experiment with image results.
The only "drawbacks" are its weigth, and the use of batteries, but considering the size of the lenses weight is almost impossible to overcome.

It does "devour" batteries, but that is typical of bright display digital cameras. Batteries, however, provide the convenience of no charger, or problematic chargers. One set of batters will last for hundreds of pictures and multiple videos.
The pictures are excellent, and the video is of higher quality than my hard drive camcorder. The attached video is of a "tearless" protest over toy control.
