expensive camera, for half the price. You'll find it extremely hard to beat, or even match this camera's features for the price... and oh by the way... I found the best price here.
This camera rocks, I can stand outside my back door and point it at a constellation, or group of stars and point and click... and the shot is mine. I couldn't believe how easily it took shots of the stars. Thanks Canon... nice job!
Movie is very grainy in moderate and low light.
I returned the camera and bought another S3IS (mine had been stolen).
Three stars, because other similar cameras seem to be with defects also.
It is like choosing a car, technically a car with have it all should be available at a reasonable price - it is just marketing so you keep searching and buying. Just like XP - Vista - WIndows 7 ...

The camera was sent back to amazon as defective.
I am so glad I did. I was able to take great shots right out of the box. There was no awkwardness with the manual controls, the pictures came out great, and indoor shots were just as fantastic as outdoor shots. As someone else mentioned, pictures indoors with flash really aren't as good as pictures without flash. The auto settings sort themselves out and produce really sweet images.
Someone also mentioned trying to shake the camera to make a blurry picture. I took this one step further. I drove down the highway at 55 mph and took shots perpendicular to the line of travel. They turned out crystal clear.
One of the features I like is the button that lets you view previously taken pictures without turning on your camera. It is nice not to have the lens come out on startup. Sure, you could turn the dial to the Play icon before you power up, but that's an extra step. I really like the simplicity of the one-touch image viewing. Also, to switch to camera mode, just press the shutter and you are ready to take pictures. I have since noticed it on other newer Canons, but my SD800is from 14 months ago didn't have it. It's nice!
Behaving still like a compact camera it has some of the goodies you find on a "big guy", the lenses let you even take super macro pictures (to put the camera as close as you can, even less than 10cm to obtain amazing results). You can attach an extra flash, even a remote controllable one, so that you can experiment with image results.
The only "drawbacks" are its weigth, and the use of batteries, but considering the size of the lenses weight is almost impossible to overcome.
It does "devour" batteries, but that is typical of bright display digital cameras. Batteries, however, provide the convenience of no charger, or problematic chargers. One set of batters will last for hundreds of pictures and multiple videos.
The pictures are excellent, and the video is of higher quality than my hard drive camcorder. The attached video is of a "tearless" protest over toy control.
I have used in Macy's thanksgiving parade.
Pros :
-> Image Quality is good even in max zoom, Low light
-> Image Stabilization works fine taking pic in max optical zoom
-> Auto focus work fine.
-> If you have understanding of Shutter speed and Appeture, it gives nice manual Control, if you dont know - Auto mode will take care of everything.
-> I like flipping LCD, which helps me to take picture with raising my hands it helped me take pics in too crowded area where i was not able to see parade, taking my pic with flipping LCD at 180 degree.
-> Video Quality is realy nice, and I was surprised by very clear Sound Quality which it capture with two microphones infront of camera.
Cons:
Little bit bulky. But you have to pay prise for getting alle this above nice features.
Conclusion : Superb Camera with all Nice features..!
It is also a camera that my friends have made comments about too.
I reviewed this camera on all the sites and almost all the sites have this one listed highest. "best non-SLR camera on the market"
I have to admit, I am one for trying to use something without having to bother with reading instructions. Thankfully, this camera is definately user-friendly. It is so easy to use. Sure there are more sophisticated options available to use on this camera, that will I probably need to address the manual for but, for a camera that you can just pick up and shoot impressive photos straight away, this baby does the trick. Even at full zoom, the picture quality is not distorted much at all.
I previously had a Samsung 8 MP camera, and the difference in quality of pictures this Canon takes compared to the Samsung are impressive. I could ramble on about how good this camera is, but if you are like me, you will just want to be re-assured that this is worth buying - IT IS!
Easy and simple to use, great pictures (day or night), nice looking and compact camera. Oh and I nearly forgot, I don't know what Canon put in there batteries, but the standard alkaline ones that came with the camera are lasting ages. I have taking over 80 pictures so far and no sign of them running out (no doubt they will, now I have mentioned it!); very impressed.
This Canon A580 PowerShot camera is a great buy!
