I purchased this machine so I could produce newsletters on ledger paper and while I was up, running and had an issue printed in about 30-minutes, the results were disappointing. I'd printed the newsletter on my HP 6500 AIO and the color rendition between the two machines is dramatic; the Brother is faded and one-dimensional while the HP is true and eye-popping. I'll tweak the colors and hope for some added richness, but sure wish HP had a ledger printer that would fit inside my cabinet because no other printer produces the same quality. The Brother machine is a good $$$ value, but I'll keep the HP close by for photos and other projects where color is a must.

As others have said, this is a good machine. I run a small engineering company and needed to scan and print color 11x17s. There are some significant limitations which Brother overlooked, and I'll share those Ive found with you. I gave it 4 stars because, even with its limitations, there is nothing with the big scan capability out there, and for many things it does a good job:1. You can't scan a full size sheet - it will only scan a normal "printable" area. That means that if you have anything full-bleed to scan, or have details which bleed into a 1/6-1/4" margin, it won't scan. You can fool the scanner on smaller sizes, but on an 11x17, you simply can't scan the edges of the sheet. It doesn't appear to be a hardware limitation - the twain driver automatically sets the margins based on your "scan size". BTW - this is a critical flaw in the machine if you want to scan 4x6 prints - who wants the scanner to crop your images down, or for you to jerryrig the machine to offset the print from the corner of the glass, then scan a 4-1/3x6-1/3 area, then have to bring the photo into editing software to recrop (or to have to manually set the crop area on each scan in the Twain driver?). Yuk.2. If you scan from the ADF to the computer, you cannot let it auto-select the scan size. If you've ever had a mixed document (letter+ledger, as if often with engineering reports), you have to scan the two sizes separately. This is also a software limitation because if you choose to scan to FTP from the ADF, it will scan letter as letter, and ledger and ledger, and put them all in a nice single PDF for you3. When scanning to FTP, you can scan at several resolutions of color (300,600,...), but when scanning to B&W, you can only scan at 100 or 200dpi. What genius figured you would never need to scan B&W at higher than a fax resolution? Anyone who archives their physical files will want at least 300dpi, and preferably 400 (G4 fax) or 600dpi. Sadly, there are no cheap/free packages to downsample pdfs to 1 bit.4. The ADF sucks. There it is. I've been through two machines thinking it might be a faulty pick-up roller. Nope, even with fresh, unused copier paper it will want to take an occasional double sheet. Again, if you're archiving papers, you don't want to find 4 or 5 sheets in a 50 page document missing. You have to babysit the machine and hold the stack, letting it feed just one sheet. Again, this isn't just with comb bound papers or previously stapled or dogeared ones, this is with freshly printed and even completely unprinted, good quality 20lb copier paper. With the exception of #4, the shortcomings are all software/firmware limitations, but with Brother's reputation I wouldn't expect any updates to this machine. Honestly, at this price point Brother could put a serious hurt on Xerox and HP document management systems for small businesses, but not until they correct their significant lack of foresight in the scanning option arena.

I bought this printer in February 2009 because I needed a printer and wanted a wireless one. I think this was a very good choice, but it has a few draw backs:Pros:-Connected to my wireless network very easily-Stays connected with very few breaks in connection-Prints very quickly and starts up quickly-Photos come out nicely-Can print on paper up to legal size (8.5x11)-Able to print last page first-Easy setup/easy to change setup w/ menu button-Instructions easy to follow w/ pictures-Works with Vista (and Macs according to the paperwork)-EnergyStar-Prints/Scans/Copies-Fax machine also-Has seperate ink for black/color-Ink prices not very expensiveCons:-Ink may not last very long--I print an average of 30 pages per month and it says "low ink" now. It's September 09 (so 7 months later) and I may need to change the ink soon, although it is the trial ink it came with and it usually doesn't last as long as regular ink.-No double sided printing option-Not the quietest printer, (or the loudest) but since it is wireless, you can put it anywhere-It did lose connection when I changed internet providers/types and I emailed customer service. They were very prompt in response (next day) and gave me tips to reconnect since nothing I was doing was working. Eventually, the printer got reconnected and has not broken since.I haven't used the fax option since I cancelled my home phone shortly after purchasing this printer. It does have a card reader and scanner so you can print photos easily. The display (which has changeable wallpapers) is pretty nice and adjusts angles. I also like the paper tray. The printer also has a wired option incase you need to plug it into a desktop and still want to use it with a laptop. The software is nice, but I don't really use it so I can't tell you if it is good or bad. Once you setup the printer, it is pretty easy to change settings back and forth with the Menu button. It's pretty self explainatory. Is this the best wireless printer? Probably not, but it is worth the price. It looks great and works great. I would recommend buying it. It isn't too large so it won't take up a lot of desk space, which is nice.

This printer is easy to set up and has a lot of features. When it works, it's great, but I've had this printer for less than a year and it's already having printing problems. Judging by the forums I've read online, this is a common problem. This is one of those printers where if one ink color is out you can't print AT ALL. The ink is pretty inexpensive to replace, but it also doesn't last long...so count on changing ink frequently. I JUST changed the ink, but it's already having issues printing. The black is faded on about 1 out of every 3 print outs. Today I received a fax and I couldn't tell what the fax said or who it was from! I just hope it wasn't important! Cleaning the printer heads will normally fix the printer issue temporarily, but I still find myself having to clean them daily and it STILL only prints correctly some of the time. From what I've read, these printers only last 24-36 months at max, so if you buy it, be sure to purchase the extended warranty...that way you'll get a new machine from Brother when it breaks. Also, be aware that if you use replacement ink from a manufacturer other than Brother, it will void the warranty.Update:I changed the review from 2 to 3 stars because the printers ink problems worked themselves out and it's been printing fine for the last few weeks. I also found out that the machine has a "fax to PC" option where every fax can also come in on your PC...that's certainly handy when the ink's not working.

I had high hopes for this fax machine. This would be my third Brother Fax machine because I liked the performance of my other two machines. It was time for an upgrade and I was excited by the wireless capabilities of this model. However, after several attempts, I have yet to be able to connect to my home wireless internet through this machine. This is quite disappointing. There have been other issues in terms of speed of printing. I think it is still okay as a fax machine, but I was really trying to get away from having a printer and a fax machine. This so-called all-in-one is not making the grade.

If I was a shareholder in this company, I would sell out immediately. As a former owner of an HP colour inkjet, I know their marketing strategy was sell cheap printer, sell expensive ink. Since I don't print that much, my total cost of ownership was manageable. In return I had a reliable printer that would continue to print irrespective of ink levels. Brother however, is another matter entirely.I agree with the sentiments expressed by all the less favaourable comments already posted with regards to ink usage. This machine regularly cleans its ink heads automatically and runs down your ink levels even if you only print a little (My old HP only cleaned ink head on request). Now I do not mind if I have to pay for stuff that I use. I am offended however, for having to pay for something I did not use (ink) and also am offended that there should exist a printer that, in this modern day and age, has less printer functionality than my older printer. One would have thought (silly me) that the ability to print with one or even MORE cartridges empty would be a standard! While I disliked HP due to cost (loved functionality), I HATE Brother (hate cost, hate functionality). I want to throw it away even though it is working properly by Brother standards. If I had only bought a defective machine, I wouldn't be so mad - these things happen. Might have still been willing to try another model. However, the way these machines work to consume ink is deliberate and insidious.Business strategists advise that it is a heavy investment to obtain new customers. It is less costly to retain old ones. If brother continues with this ink usage strategy in its machines, the only way it is going to survive is by attracting a constant supply of new customers since there is no way on earth I am ever going to buy another brother and am sure that same holds true for many here.

So, I usually don't do reviews but I thought this one was worth it. Maybe it will save someone the hours I spent trying to set this thing up. Before ordering, I did my research like most people. I found mostly positive reviews and a few negative ones that concerned me. Seemed more than a few had trouble getting this thing set up. I decided to try it and upon arrival I was excited by the look, function and features. Then came the installation. Let me say that although I am far from a computer guru, I am fairly competent with them as well. I have a desktop running Windows XP with a wireless router that I use for my laptop running Vista. The main reason I purchased this printer was to be able to print via WiFi from my laptop. However, for whatever reason, the only way I could get my desktop computer to recognize the printer as "online" was to install it with the USB cable. Believe me I tried everything. To make matters worse I could not get the laptop to work at all via WiFi. Finally as a last ditch effort to install the printer on the laptop, instead of using the CD for installation, I went through Windows and had it locate and install the printer with the add printer link from the Control Panel (I had no trouble getting the printer to find my wireless home network.) After that the laptop worked like a charm. On to the desktop. I could never get the desktop to connect using either the wireless or the ethernet connection. Finally I crossed my fingers and installed it again using the CD and USB cable. To my surprise and delight it worked and I could print from both the desktop using the USB and my laptop via WiFi without changing any settings. The manual said this was not possible but I am assuming they meant with a single machine?? Anyway, I give brother 1 star for ease of use and their installation instructions but I am very satisfied with the overall product, provided it lasts. Only time will tell if it will be worth the 7 or so hours I put in to getting it to work properly. Hopefully this will save a few the pain I endured.

Frequently thinks cartridges are out of ink or missing when they're not. I wasted a lot of money on cartridges before giving up. For example, I just replaced the black cartridge, and then it said the yellow cartridge was missing even though I didn't touch the yellow.Configuration is not for amateurs; requires some manual configuration of computer names and IP addresses for some features to work, and you may have problems if the computer is on WiFi and the printer is on Ethernet.

I bought quite a few of these Brother multifunction printers. They make minor model changes quite often but the features are all about the same, other than options. It is a pain that they keep changing the ink cartridge type, though, so you cannot stock up too many of them.Scan quality is good, but high resolution scan is slow via USB. Any quality issue here is due to dirt on the sensor. Just keep it clean.Print quality is good. If not, do the quality print test and you usually find that a nozzle or two is blocked which can be fixed with a cleaning-cycle -- up to a point. I find that they do not clean well after a couple of years.FAX quality is good. It has many options which can get confusing.

After owning this printer for one year, I can tell you that I still use it everyday. Well, the scanner and fax is used everyday. I haven't used it for printing for some time now. Here are my problems:* This printer uses TONS on ink!!! I can't say this enough.Even with full ink cartridges, the printer would print blank pages. Could be because I don't print every day, but I'm not sure. Then I tried the cleaning (over and over again) until one of my ink cartridges was too low. Now I had to replace that cartridge to try and print again since if any of the cartridges are low, you can't print anything. Repeat that process with the new cartridge and now another one is low. See why this printer was never used for printing again?

I purchased this ink sucking machine because I thought I could just replace one ink cartridge at a time...Shame on me I even read the reviews that said that people had problems replacing the ink cartridge and I purchased it anyways. I wanted to replace the black cartidge at a cost of $25. I did so and tried to install. The printer's error message was "Cannot detect". After numerous attempts to correct I reluctantly called the "Customer Service" 800#. The robotic script reader or as brother calls them customer service rep. kept repeating in order to get the black cartridge to work you need to replace the other three cartridges because they are low. So she finally agreed in order to replace my black cartridge it would cost me $100 each time to replace the black if the others were low. I have never taken the time to rate a product but I just wanted to say......... BROTHER SUCKS!

I am very impressed at the longevity of the ink cartridges of this machine, bought this at the end of April this year have run off at least 200 plus copy's and have not had to replace the ink cartridges yet. On my Lexmark 7100 I would have done a replacement twice by now. What a difference and a pleasure to have this machine it has almost paid for itself just in a few months and I have years of warranty left and I bought two sets of ink replacements with it. I am probably set for at least the rest of this year and maybe to the anniversary of me buying it next year, it was easy to set up, its easy to use and best of all my wife likes it and has told me thank you for buying it; and after 25yrs of marriage I did something right thanks "Brother" you made it possible. Its is worth every penny you pay for it. Thanks Amazon for bringing us these high quality products and the extended warranty's that are offered it really makes the purchases a even better deal.

We bought this becasue it was a wireless unit and boy was it a pain in the butt to set up. Initially we had a cable modem and it seemed like weekly I would have to call my cable co. to figure out was was the best setting for it. Then we moved and had DSL again. Not as tricky this time around to set up well I think the hours of frustration prior to this helped that affair. Then we started having this problem when I got a new laptop and my husbands laptob had to be on and open since it didn't recognise mine. Gets even better folks so my laptop went away for a while, I get it back and what do you know, I don't need to open the other laptop and it works just fine. Never touching one setting on it. major complaints no double sided printing, not too user friendly, the head cleaning function comes on at 3 in the morning, wish it had auto tray when you go to copy something from it. It prints but will not buy another like it again.

Brother's ad quotes 35ppm for black printing. Mine took 17 seconds per page. After an hour on the phone I was told my unit was printing as it is supposed. When I questioned the 35ppm stamped on the box I was told that was for a page that had 5% coverage. Their test page had a 15% coverage(says Brother) and it still took 13 seconds. Flat out misrepresentation by Brother.

After owning and reviewing both the excellent Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer and the almost as-good Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One Photo Printer, Brother has to make an airtight case against Canon when they're looking to get twice as much money out of your wallet.Unless printing on 11 x 17" (ledger) paper is a make-or-break need, Brother doesn't make a very good case against the less expensive Canon offerings.Of course, this is Brother's flagship inkjet AIO offering, so they've thrown in a gimmicky touchscreen. Sure, it's kind of cool, but it doesn't really help accomplish much beyond jacking up the price. Is it missing from other AIO printers? Sure. Does it add any value? No.Setting the printer up on MacOS X was quite painless, making for an unexpected treat. Setting the printer up in Windows was also simple, as expected. Wireless printing worked well all around, with very good range. And Brother's dual-tray paper handling is something that's sorely missing from all of Canon's offerings. So, why all the Canon talk? Because comparatively speaking, the Brother MFC-6890cdw takes longer to print both text and photos (single sided and duplex), the photo quality isn't as good, the scanning speed is not as good, the document feeder acts screwy when you're not using 8.5 x 11" paper, and yet... it costs nearly twice as much.A natural retort could be "But Brother is targeting small business users", which is normally true, but that simply doesn't wash when you take consumables in to consideration. Comparing the black ink between Canon and Brother (PGI-220BK vs. LC61BKS), you get rated yields of 350 pages vs. 450 pages. But when you dig a little deeper and compare the cost per page based on the cartridge cost, you end up with 4.6 cents per page on the Canon side and 5.5 cents per page on the Brother side (based on the retail price of both cartridges at a national office supply store). So while it's true that you're going through more cartridges on the Canon side, you're also paying less for them upfront and per page.So at the end of the day, why would you buy this printer? To be honest, I don't really know. If you're heavy in to ledger sized documents, and need the occasional presentation printed, you don't have many alternatives. But if you don't need to print larger than 8.5 x 11" on a daily basis, get yourself the Canon Pixma MX860, enjoy the better quality and the hundreds of dollars you'll save.

Rating is really a 2.5Good: For the price, getting a printer, copier, scanner, and fax is awesome, LCD screen, is highly detailed to let you know everything from levels in ink, to troubleshooting, wireless hook up is a great feature. Only minor problems when it comes to troubleshooting. Ink cartridges can be found for cheap. Easy ink cartridge replacement.BADS: (Based on performance with a 2009 iMac) Takes an long time to print things, in other words, slower than most printers. Prints pictures darker than what is previewed on the computer. Dust Magnet. HUGE CONS: Perhaps this is a fixable issue, but it would not let me print (even in black and white) if ANY of the inks, including colors, were out. INK CARTRIDGES are not refillable like other printers, suggest buying refurbished cartridges or from small companies, you can find them for same or less than a refill, ink must be replaced often! It is a reliable printer but slow and with flaws, if you are printer a lot of photos, or printing often in a hurry, not for you.

Sure, when you first open it up and use it it feels like the best thing in the world, but this machine and perhaps all Brother MFCs have secret flaws that unveil overtime. First of all, it will not print B/W if you don't have ALL the color ink install (maybe all printers behave like this, I don't know but its unfair to the user). Secondly, it will be an annoyance when it wakes you up at 3AM in the morning when it turns itself on in the middle of the night to "clean" itself. Yes, it's true. I thought it was just my Brother-MFC but apparently my friend's also do the same thing. On that point, after a while it will get a machine error that requires you to either throw it away, send it back, or take it apart to clean out its "Ink Absorber". You can also go online and force it to reset itself like what I'm doing, but the absorber will one day explode and that's when I will pull my printer funds out for something new. Invest your money in something else, its 2010, you can get something that performs better for a lower price.
