I needed to print 11 x 17 format for drawings, and this printer does the job. While it doesn't handle 11 x 17 originals, it does print them from file. It also takes up less space than it's big Brother, and as I use it in conjunction with my HP 6310, space is limited. Having two printers makes not having to change paper possible; I just direct output to the appropriate printer.Being a full-function machine, it also backs up the 6310's fax function, even printing out faxes the HP misses (mis-dialed fax #). I love the ability to only purchase the ink color needed, and the Brother cartriges are much larger and way cheaper than HPs. This is a good product-and without throwing stones at HP, Brother has a superior product at a great price.

This product is the the most extordinary waste of time and money spent in a long time. One must have a MS degree in Computer Tech in order to follow the directions for installation. Then, after emailing the company to request clarification, they copy and paste info from the manual you already have (because one evidently could not read the manual and distinguish between the 2). The Thing still does not print from my laptop, despite following the directions, and the FAQ's on the company's website don't match the problem. To top it off, the desk PC won't read the CD for installation, so if I do get the Thing working, I still have to use 2 printers.I will be returning the Thing to Office Max... but wait... I have to pay a $15 re-stocking fee because the box was open! So, to all non-computer people BEWARE!!!!

I don't understand how this product could get any decent reviews. I suppose it does a reasonable job when it first comes out the box and I expect most people write their review soon after receiving the item. It goes downhill quick. It uses more ink than any other printer I have ever used. It won't print, scan, copy or perform any other function when any of the cartridges are low. Printer goes through realigning and cleaning cycle every time it is powered on. 1st page is always only a partial print. Inconsistent printing performance. Stay away from this product. It is awful.

If you just want to print on letter size paper and never do anything else, this is probably going to be just fine for you. My dissatisfaction comes from the clunky and downright unfriendly hardware and terrible paper handling. To connect the device to your computer/network via USB or Ethernet, you have to lift up the entire scanner glass assembly to get to this crazy in-the-guts-of-the-machine port area to snake your cables through and plug in. I never though that external USB and RJ45 connectors were a feature, but after using this thing I'll never take them for granted again. After following all the instructions, I was never able to get the MFC-5490CN to connect to my network. I was forced to use USB and printer sharing to allow other machines to print to the Brother. Now for the paper handling gripe. I "upgraded" to this machine from a cheap little Canon printer. The little $50 printer from Canon managed to handle CD/DVD paper sleeves with round plastic windows just fine. I print on the back of the sleeves in color and with no problem with the old Canon. This Brother machine, though, couldn't handle them at all. It would slip, snag, snarl and jam every 10th sleeve. The output was difficult to access (reach your hand into the cavity of the machine to get it) and when it did finally print a sleeve, the rollers obviously slipped, because the text was fuzzy. It was as if the sleeves were sliding around under the ink nozzles. Every sleeve that made it through was also severely wrinkled.Since printing on CD/DVD paper sleeves is a big part of my printer usage, I had no choice but to get rid of this thing. Also, beware that this machine ships with "starter" ink cartridges. This means that they have much less ink than the cartridges you'll end up buying. This seems like a very anti-consumer move on the part of Brother. You can be sure that this is the last device from Brother that I purchase.

I was replacing a Lexmark wireless All-in-One when I bought this printer from Brother. I must say the difference is night and day. The Lexmark was clunky. The wireless was hit and miss and setting it up on my network was a pain! You couldn't scan wireless and there was no built-in fax. This printer from Brother is a breath of fresh air for the price. In fact, I paid $89 for it just 1 week ago...at the time of this review it's been marked down to $79. Back to the review; the wireless setup is SO easy (one touch if your router supports it). Even on my encrypted (WPA-PSK) network, I had no trouble setting it up.I'm using Snow Leopard and have no issues with compatibility. The utilities leave a bit to be desired, but for the most part, I don't use them anyways. The OCR works, scanning to a file works, and printing (quickly!) works. The print quality isn't excellent, but someone shopping for a wireless all-in-one in this price range isn't overly concerned with print quality. It would be fine for 90% of all documents. I should not that text quality is excellent...but images aren't super great...again, that's not a con for a printer in this price range, just FYI.Finally, the price for replacement refills isn't prohibitive. Installation of the cartridges is also super easy. This would be a great All-in-one for kids rooms, the dorm, or older folks who need a simple solution!

Initially, I loved this printer. It wasn't too expensive and it had all the features I needed. Print quality was fine for my purposes. The paper tray is kind of flimsy feeling, but no big deal. Mostly, I just used this printer to print out papers for school. I had maybe printed with color a couple times so the first time I ran out of ink I wasn't too suprised. I found it a bit odd that my color cartridges ran out though I hadn't printed in color for months but I ignored this. I found it irritating that because my magenta ink was empty (soon followed by yellow and cyan) I was not allowed to print in greyscale (for reference, my black ink was full). But I just went along with it and bought new cartridges. This is where it gets bad. After replacing the color cartridges, I set my default to greyscale and never (not one single time) printed in color with the fresh cartridges. Three months later, my color cartridges are empty. Honestly? And since Brother is evil, I now cannot print black and white with MY FULL BLACK INK CARTRIDGE BECAUSE MY COLOR CARTRIDGES THAT I NEVER USED ARE EMPTY. Complete joke. Well, guess what Brother? Rather than buying new cartridges this time I am buying a whole new printer because I would rather spend 100 dollars at a different company than give you another cent for your worthless disappearing ink. I am going to destroy this printer ala "Office Space". Oh yeah, and I figured out what the MFC stands for in the product name: M****r F*****g C**t 440cn. Sorry to be crude, but this is just how much I hate this printer.

Normally, I hate printers, but this printer has made me a convert! I've had Epson, Canon and HP printers and all have been fussy from the very start. In the four months I've owned this printer I have had NO problem. Not one. The setup was extremely easy -- even setting it up for the wireless network was a piece of cake. Printing, faxing, scanning and copying are extremely simple. The printer is fairly small and, because it's wireless, it doesn't need to be near the computer so you can place it wherever you want. Mine sits unobtrusively on a bookshelf across the room from the computer. It's nice to have the ability to print documents from your laptop when your working outside!A few weeks ago I bought one for my Mom's small business because she needs to print a lot of labels. On her HP printer she would have to feed the labels one at a time or they would cause a paper jam. The Brother handles a whole stack of labels with no paper jams! She loves this printer as much as I do.The only criticism I have is that I had to make some adjustments in the print settings on my computer to get the colors to look as vibrant as I like. It took a few test pages to finally get it right.Of course, I can't speak to durability but for now this is the best, least fussy, most functional printer I've ever used...not to mention the easy faxing, scanning and copying.

This is the 4th Brother printer I've purchased. One is a simple laser with duplex, the second was an "all in one," and the third was a color laser. All the others were laser, not inkjet. All, until this one, have installed like a breeze. We do a lot of scans and copies at the office, and I have been totally impressed with the other all in one machine. You can stick a stack of papers in the feed, and go to your networked computer and then scan all of them flawlessly. THAT is why I decided to buy the 490cw. Unfortunately we have only managed to connect ONE of the 4 computers we have to it on our network, and THAT only after spending hours and hours on the internet in forums troubleshooting the problem. We tried the ethernet method, the wireless method but nothing worked until we set up static ip address, and tweaked other parts of the configuration. Now it works fine wirelessly, but only on one computer. We finally managed to get one more computer to print on it, but only by loading the printer drivers separately from the packaged set up disk. To be fair, I should mention that the printer performs very well on the one computer we managed to connect to it, and that we had not problem whatsoever connecting via usb directly to the computer... but why do that when you bought a WIRELESS printer. Maybe others have had no problem, but we had an HORRIBLE experience,

We run a small design company from our dining room. With space a premium, we needed an all-in-one fax, copier and printer, and the price on this one was very attractive. We had a Brother already, but we needed 11 x 17 prints in house to have for our customers. Unpacking didn't take long. It includes a cord to plug into your phone line, but it probably will be too short for most users. We plugged it in and ran a couple of test prints with no problem-- the quality was just like the test prints on the display model. The software for this loaded and did everything it was supposed to do, but it took 30-40 minutes to install. I didn't install this on a slow computer, either. I don't know how much hard drive space it takes. After the epic installation process, printing from the computer was more than satisfactory for us in both speed and quality. I don't know if I would use this as my main photo printer; we haven't tried it with photo paper, and don't have much need for that. You'll get a little over 5 pages a minute with text, and a little over 2 with images. The speed is great for us; a larger business would do better with some kind of dedicated, single-function laser printer. The trays hold a lot of paper, with a 50 sheet auto feeder and a 150 sheet tray. Loading can be tricky since you have to remove the tray, but the manual has good instructions and you'll only have to learn this once. I love having separate color cartridges-- less waste! Not to mention that Brother includes the three color and the black cartridges in high yield, so you'll be ready to go right away. Scans come out great, and took less than a minute. Faxes are faxes-- I think that it's only as fast as the machine sending to us (we rarely fax anything out). The little color LCD is nice. I don't have much use for it for image editing, but I can see how others would like this feature.Overall this is a great, multi-use printer for small business, and is affordable for personal use as well.EDIT: Those of you using Vista should know that there is a known problem with this printer's drivers and Vista. Brother is aware of the issue, but it's a problem with Vista and not with Brother. We tried it on two PCs with Vista Basic and one with Vista Premium, and none of them worked. It works fine on an XP computer.

I purchased this wireless all-in-one printer for $79.99 several weeks ago. I am impressed with the compact, stylish design. Wireless setup was easy, although the startup information in the manual and startup guide was unnecessarily complicated. After connecting an ethernet cable to my router, all that was required was to step through the menu on the printer screen. The Print, Scan, Copy and Fax functions all work well. The controls are logical and well laid out. I particularly like the two Start buttons, one for color output, the other for B/W. It's much easier than selecting from a menu. The wireless printing works well. The print speed is not fast, but for my uses it is adequate. Quality of color printing and 4 X 6 photos are at least on par with the Canon i860 this printer replaces. The printer uses four ink tanks. Ink level is indicated on the printer screen and on the computer. So far, if the ink level monitors are correct, the printer uses ink very efficiently. I purchased replacement ink cartridges from [...] but have yet to need to install them.Overall, this has proven to be a very nice printer for my needs. Considering the price, it's an outstanding buy.

We got this printer 4.5 years ago and were very happy with it the whole time. We used it to print our wedding invitations on heavy stock paper as well as the envelopes using the manual feeder and were very happy with the results. The printer worked well hooked up to my apple airport express. The quality was good and the speed was satisfactory. We have probably printed less than 2000 pages in the lifetime of this printer and have only gone through 1 toner beyond the one that came with the printer. We almost exclusively print text and maps in light grey scale. After having this for 4.5 years it started making a loud knocking noise and jamming all the time. The noise happened even with the drum removed. A local printer repair shop said that it would likely cost as much to repair this printer as it would to get a new one. The only reason that it did not get 5 stars is that it died after a period of very moderate use. We had hoped to get many more years out of this printer.

My existing scanner, printer, etc. have worked great for years but now incompatible with Vista (it's such a waste to throw great working items away just do to the fact that it is not as profitable for companies to create new drivers vs. just selling you a new printer .. I would pay good money for a new driver if available ... but i digress)Ok. So I shop Amazon and read the reviews about the similar Epson model, seems like it has serious issues with using way to much ink and then shuts down your ability to scan and fax if empty (functions that don't even use ink)! No good. Then I look at the similar HP model, only to find out it appears to have issues with paper jamming, software bugs, and so on. The reviews on this Brother model did not seem so bad in comparison - so I took a chance and purchased. Here is a quick summary of what you will find:Pro's:- Stylish, well made.- Uses a paper tray- Scanning was good quality and fast- Printing speed seems ok (but really only as fast as my old printer)- Automatic document feeder on the top is nice, and works well.- Separate phone with the ability to listen using machine speaker phoneCon's:- COLOR PRINT QUALITY IS BAD. When I print the exact same Google map (for example) on my very old HP P1100, the quality is far superior than this brand new one .. the Brother color print outs are 'washed out" and are sometimes hard to read (cleaning, priming, etc. on the printer heads did not change anything). I can only imagine what would happen if I tried to print a photo ... but I wanted to return while I still could. I knew something was strange when I printed a test page and it looked so strange and generic (and also 'washed out')- When you press the scan button, defaults to "scan and send to email" (only configures goes to outlook which I don't use anyway). If you want to scan to your PC, then you have to navigate through a menu to get there. Then, the next time you scan ... guess what ... back to the default again! Seems like a minor issue, but wait until you need to scan 200 photos or multi page document.- The handset nor speaker phone has no MUTE button ... a problem if you attend a lot of conference calls like I do.The only problem is now I have to choose between the best of several 'evils' ... is there not a good printer out there somewhere ... I am willing to to pay even up to $500 now for something that works, but where is it? Also, what has happened to quality products! Seems like they just want to sell low quality printers and then milk you for even more money later via printer cartridges that cost more than the printer itself! Seems like the industry is going backwards. The bad part is that I need SOMETHING and will end up purchasing one of these eventually and that sends the wrong message to these companies that think they can get away with it ...

I bought this printer largely because of the good reviews and the 11x17 printing capability which comes in handy quite often.I was NOT impressed with the text quality; could not print out a resume that looked good enough, even on the best quality setting. On a side note, quality settings below "normal" are pretty low quality - too low for legible emails, etc. I'm not sure who would ever want to use them to save ink, as you'll be more frustrated with illegible prints. When attempting to make multi-page copies using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), the copies can be sorted (which is to be expected) but the pages print out in REVERSE ORDER!! I checked to make sure I fed the originals properly (face up), went through ALL of the settings, and also called Technical Support - all with NO solutions. The only solution offered by Support was to put my originals in "reverse order"!! Yeah, with a 30-page document - I DON'T THINK SO! For printing multi-page documents from the computer, I was able to check off "Reverse Order" in the printer driver (Preferences). There is no such setting on the printer itself (for copying). By default, prints come out face up: page 1, 2, etc. That drives me nuts! I want to be able to grab the stack, staple it, and go.Also, color copying did not pick up light colors at all, even on the best quality setting. It also reduced the image size a smidge, which Support had no answer for. For some reason, it does not scan the document edge to edge either, so you'll lose some items in the margin even when just scanning (can't do a true 8.5" x 11" area).Fortunately, I discovered all these problems within the first 14 days of ownership and was able to return the printer (bought at Staples). I never did get to test the 11x17 printing; the printer was not worth the headaches I discovered already. Sales associates noted that Brother has one of the highest return rates for printers. Hmmmmm....

I bought this printer when it was on sale for about $90.00. Our color laser printer had given up the ghost and we needed something quick and didn't have time to research the color lasers. This little baby has worked perfectly right out of the box. I'm pretty well versed in network setups, but I needed to read the setup instructions. But I had it up and running in less than 15 minutes. Its print quality is so good, that depending upon the cartridge yield, we may not replace the laser. We don't need great speed and don't do a lot of big jobs, so I have a feeling its going to work out just fine.Haven't tried the photo-realistic feature, but that's not why I bought the printer.Only 2 gripes. The fancy software that allows you to do everything, (send/receive faxes) from your computer is only good for two computers. Then they want you to buy more licenses. Good grief, this is a NETWORK printer. Two users? Get real!!But that didn't bother me because I don't need, nor do I want, those features on my machines. So I just installed the drivers only and things work fine. Might try the fancy software on one machine later just so we can have the functions available if we need them.Second gripe is paper tray. 100 sheets seems like too little for me. But maybe its just because I'm use to our 500 sheet laser.Handle the paper tray gently. The plastic looks a little flimsy and I'm sure it would cost more to replace it than the printer cost in the first place. But as long as you are careful, I think it will hold up fine.Anyway, a good value for the $'s.Oh, and I had to call Brother on a support issue (turned out to be me being stupid as opposed to anything wrong with the printer). They actually talked to me. I could understand them and they were very patient. Pretty good for a $90.00 printer.

One big negative: If one ink cartridge goes empty, no matter what color, it will not let you print at all. Not in "black only" or any other color, AT ALL. There is a fix for this if you just put a piece of electrical tape around the "ink level window" on the cartridge. Here is a link that will get you through an ink crisis...http://journal.drfaulken.com/trick-your-brother-inkjet-into-working-when-an-ink-cartridge-runs-dry/However, if you use your printer several times per week and are responsible enough to keep an extra set of ink on-hand this is a great machine. Ink is cheap on Amazon and this machine uses a different cartridge for each color so you can replace only the colors you use most. I print often so I can't comment on how quickly the ink dries up if it is not used. The quantity of pages printed is average. The initial ink cartridges shipped with mine ran out quickly but that may be due to initial filling of the jets and low capacity starting cartridges. Other full-size cartridges had average output. If you have some basic skills on networking it is no problem. If you are a novice and don't know how to set firewall settings to be sure it is allowing access, you probably need a geeky friend to help you setup *any* network printer. All the functions and resolution quality advertised work fine. The remote setup functions are straight-forward. Sticking a a USB flash drive (AWESOME!) or memory card straight in the machine and printing from the LCD screen is straight-forward and a real time saver for a quick print. 4x6 borderless printing works without a hitch. As with any inkjet, you must give them time to dry. Printing speed is good for the price. If you need something faster then pay more for the speed. The basic functions of scanning/copying with enlargements/reductions etc work fine for me.The space saving design is great. You only need clearance to lift the scanning lid and you can slip paper and photos in easily without raising the lid very far at all.I have had this machine for almost a year and I love it. But, I always keep ink on-hand so I'm not screwed!

The latter work, but Brothers is by far the best. The wireless feature of course was the main reason for buying, but faxing, copyng, printing....this model does it all. Easy to set up, technical support is one of the best, no waiting, courteous...I would highly recommend this product.I was surpised, in this recession, to see the price which is double what I paid, but compared to any other wireless printer, I strongly recommend it.

Ordinarily one of my least favorite things to do is to set up office equipment like printers or fax machines. I was prepared to hunker down for the evening and install this multi function printer on a wireless network with three PC's and two Mac's. Four of the computers are connected to Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router by ethernet and the other wireless. The set-up of the printer was a snap. It probably took about 40 minutes from taking the printer out of the box to printing a test picture on the last computer and most of that time was taking the plastic packing material off the printer and waiting while the software and drivers installed on the computers. It was painless. No foul words, no bad temper or snarling. After plugging in the printer and connecting the phone line for the fax, I installed the ink cartridges and set up the fax info on the little LED screen. It was simple, just followed the directions in the quick start guide. (They even supplied pictures) Then I followed the prompts on that little LCD screen to connect to my wireless network. It saw it right away, asked for passwords, etc. and, POOF! the printer was connected to my network. Then I just put the CD that came with the printer into each of the computers, one at a time (They have installers for both the Mac and PC on the same CD) and POOF! again. They were all hooked up and I could print pictures. It was that easy. Now I can print from all of the computers and there's no wires running from the printer to any of the computers or to the router. It almost seems like magic!I can remember times when connecting just one printer to a computer was a major "plug and pray" ordeal. This was completely painless and I'm not a computer geek by any stretch of the imagination. The photos I've printed so far look great. I sent a fax to my office, but will have to wait til tomorrow to make sure it went through. It looks like it did. The scanner works just fine. Another little thing that's cool about this machine is the LCD window. I took a picture of it and posted it on this product page. Two thumbs up for this printer!

do NOT waste your time on this thing.the first one I had, the scanner randomly made a heinously loud buzzing noise and refused to move. I hardly used the scanner, and took great care with it.. it had to be exchanged.the second jams CONSTANTLY, and you have to turn the machine off to clear the jam (after reaching around back to get the jam out, which is difficult when you have it sitting on a desk or shelf). you cant use the machine unless all four ink cartridges have ink in them, and the printer registers the inks empty way before they actually are, so ink costs a fortune and if you run out and dont have extra laying around youre outta luck. print quality is terrible, particularly in color. finally, unless you have the thing plugged in at all times (which I dont, because it wastes electricity), as soon as you go to print something it goes into cleaning mode for about 5 minutes.without a doubt the most frustrating piece of equipment I have owned.

I was hesitant to purchase this based on all the mediocre reviews, but I am extremely happy with the 240c. I think its about the best multi-function you can get for under a hundred bucks (with the possible exception of tha Canon Pixma). First, a few of these reviews contain critical errors about the unit. First: It IS possible to scan multiple documents into a single PDF file. One simple way is to load up your documents into the top paper feeder, then scan to PDF, and every page it scans will be put into the same file. Another way to do it is to use the Presto Pagemanager software that comes on the installation CD. Second: the 240c DOES have incoming fax capabilities...you have to enable it in the Fax options on the unit's menu setup (not on your computer). It does not have a handset so you cannot use it as a phone, but at least on the 240c that I have, it can indeed receive faxes. Third: the reason the unit will not print anything even if only one cartridge is blank is because it uses a suction type cart (different from most inkjets), and damage to the unit will occur if an empty cartridge is left in. That said, here's my review.Build quality is overall very durable, with the possible exception of the paper tray. It won't turn any heads with its bland utilitarian appearance, but its compact and sturdy for home or home office usage. It also looks like an office machine, as opposed to the flimsy Fisher-Price looking offerings from HP and Lexmark. The controls are laid out sufficiently and you should be able to figure things out by surfing through the unit's menu, although there are alot of setup options so you may have to do some searching. The only complaints about the design are the small, non-backlit display and the paper tray. The paper tray is more like a paper container with a lid, that loads like a cartridge. If you only print on one type of paper its fine, but if you want to switch and print envelopes, 4X6, etc., it can do it but you have to take the tray out, take out all the paper, adjust the slider, then put in the new paper and re-insert.Print and scan quality are just fine. In fact, the scanner is very impressive and scans are much better quality than the Canon it replaced. Print quality is just fine...I dont see any washed out colors or anything else others have noted. Its prints as good as any unit will under a hundred bucks. The copy and scan features work just great and fast. You can either use the computer to make copies or you can bypass your PC altogether and use it as a standalone copier. Most of the features can be run either from the software or the unit itself, which is great. The top-feeding document accepter is a huge time saver. Also, the lid on the scanner is hinged allowing you to scan thicker items, like books, easily. As far as ink usage, some settings must be adjusted to get longer life. First, disable "bi-directional printing" as it uses alot of ink and wrinkles the paper. Set the paper-type to "plain." This is huge, because if you dont, even if you select grayscale printing, it will pull ink from the color cartidges. Also, if you print mostly text, set the print quality to the "fast" settings, and it looks just fine. You want to conserve ink, since these cartridges run about 20-25 bucks for black, and around 12-14 for each color. But, the cartridges are huge so they should last average users a while. For heavy office use, you may want to look at a a higher end or laser model. The fax feature I dont use so I cant comment much on how that works. It also accepts most major memory cards for photo printing, but without a preview screen your better off printing pics from your computer. It is also worth noting that this unit IS Mac compatible (many of the sub-$100 machines aren't), although I had to update the drivers and software from Brother's website after installing the CD to get some scanning features to work. I'm assuming this has something to do with the whole Intel / PPC switch. I'd highly advise you to do the same...their site is just their name, and the update offerings fixed the few bugs I encountered.Overall I am very impressed with this unit. I had returned an HP c3180 multi-function because it couldnt hold a handle to this as far as overall quality and value. Highly recommended for home and light home office use.
