I bought this printer 6 months ago in order to print wirelessly. It worked great for a couple of months. With NO configuration changes whatsoever, the printer stopped functioning. Headache after headache with connectivity issues and ink issues. Just printing a simple test print is an adventure or should I say misadventure.I am done with all brother printers after this. I do like their label machines but this printer sucked up lots of valuable time for the last few months. I am not even selling it or donating it as it will only cause me or the other person grief.I'm going to find a pc recycle center and throw this piece of garbage out.

This is a large printer with lots of features that work well. I set this up on the wireless function to operate with my Mac. It only took one setup and I've experienced no problems with the range, which I did experience on my HP initially. Sending documents to print is a fast and easy task. It has an easy to use and good looking large touchscreen to take you through each menu. This is great and time saving when compared with other printers. Having the ability to print ledger photos without going to a printer store is fantastic and I used it to make several posters for our portfolio. Now to the caveat, big or small depending on your needs. The print quality is not nearly as good as the HP. It's comparable to other brands, very similar to what Lexmark puts out, but could not compare in color quality to my HP. Yesterday, I needed to print out a color chart for our business products and I did a couple on the normal settings on my HP. Then my ink got low so I switched over to the Brother to make a couple on there. I decided to put it on the best quality settings because I wanted the colors to be very vibrant. It takes a good bit of time to print on the high quality setting so I was expecting a lot and was very disappointed when it was finished. The colors looked washed out or a bit faded when held side by side to what I had just printed on the HP and took 3 times as long to print. I took it without saying which was which and showed it to my husband who pointed to the HP document and said that it was so much better and that there was no comparison. As far as my color chart, the HP was very usable and the Brother not at all. To be fair, the Brother has settings for its color printer that you can manually enter. I'm just not adept enough to do that, to know which settings to set the colors on. But as far as default printing, you won't get top quality photo printing, you will get adequate printing. So, the bottom line is if you need high quality color printing, then this might not be the right printer for you. But if you are an occasional photo printer or primarily use it for office or business documents where vibrant color quality is not required, then this is a great, easy to use multi-function printer and you should give it a try.

I've had this printer for about 5 months now. The biggest down side to this model is the ink cartridges. If one cartridge is empty like blue or yellow, it will NOT continue to print just black or any other colors like my other printers do. It just shuts down all printing functions until you replace that cartridge, you are just dead in the water if you run out of any color ink. Most printers will continue to print using the remaining colors, not the case here. Tech support confirmed this also. The print quality on this printer is average to above average on photos. The scan quality is grainy and streaky and not recommended for photos at ALL, and does not produce true colors of the item being scanned. Its good for documents though. The fax and fax from screen works great. The network connection is a plus if you are sharing it on a home network as I am. But I would not purchase another printer that requires that all inks be full in order to print anything. I do not recommend this printer unless you plan on always having extra ink in stock.

The Brother MFC-295CN printer is a good low-priced printer. I have it connected to a wireless router and print from a Win 7 desktop and a WinXP wireless netbook. The main selling point for me is the low price for Brother LC61 ink cartridges on the secondary market. I bought replacement ink cartridges for $1/cartridge from Amazon. I couldn't find anything else close to that price for replacement cartridges for other printer makes.

The first thing you notice about the Brother All in One printer is that it is HUGE. I mean, it's huge, and I say that as someone who has owned several all in ones, and has watched the footprint diminish with every new addition. But on the upside, this printer is exactly what a small office (or a busy home office) might just need to take care of most of their printing and copying tasks. The Brother comes with a slew of nice features, including some pretty amazing dual trays that hold paper up to 11 by 17 (definitely not the kind of thing one sees in a regular AIO.)The printer the Brother replaced was a HP AIO that worked nicely for my needs - that is, basically wireless printing of text, and the occasional photocopying chore. The Brother set up quickly with my Macbook Pro; absolutely no problems, and unlike other folks, the wireless printing set up was done in mere moments. For basic printing, the Brother beat out my HP in terms of speed. It was FAST, and I do mean fast (the HP always sort of chokes for a minute or two while printing. It eventually gets it done, but absolutely nothing like the Brother in terms of quickness.)I tried to print a few web pages, then I tried several jpgs to see how it handled photo printing. I should note that I use expensive paper, mostly because the HP has a tendency to misfire on cheapie paper stock. The web pages with the Brother came out fine, but remember, this is from a laywoman's POV. The jpgs printed a little slowly, and the color register was simply amazing. Gorgeous pictures! The improvement, also, is I didn't have to wait 10 minutes for the pages to print out. The Brother handled the printing task relatively quickly; with the HP, you could celebrate a birthday waiting for a jpg to print. If you have substantial office printing needs, this Brother will be right up your alley. You'd also need substantial office space, because (did I mention?) this printer is HUGE.It also is a bit on the pricey side, another factor to consider. I don't know that this kind of printer power is necessary for the average or (like me) below average print user. There are better buys to be had out there, but if you have the need of a mega AIO, you could do much worse than to invest the extra bucks with this Brother model.

After using this printer's predecessor (MFC-6490CW) for over a year, I can offer the following:My requirements are very specific. I need ledger-size (11x17) scanning and printing...period. Just try to find an AIO at this price that will do that (unless you want to pay $600+?) Most of my documents are B&W, some with a small amount of color highlighting, and this printer works flawlessly for that purpose. For color photos, make sure you use photo paper or the color is so washed out even at the custom maxed-out settings that I don't bother printing photos on plain paper. The automatic document feeder, ADF, is somewhat flakey and skews the paper a bit too much for my finiky demands so I just limit myself to using the glass-top surface for most scanning.I love the scan-to-file feature that doesn't require input from the PC and allows several file formats as the default, including PDF. If you are not picky about the document skewing of the ADF, this printer will scan a stack of originals and place the entire set into a single multi-page PDF file if you desire. This printer uses replaceable ink "tanks" instead of ink/head cartridges and this makes it much easier to manage and refill if you choose. The printer asks if you have installed a new tank and then takes your word for it, unlike the HP I used previously that insisted on reporting an out-of-ink condition even after refilling. Since this printer's tanks have no electronics inside, there is no serial number to read and no way for the software to know if you have inserted an old cartridge.I noticed over the last year that the user manual is somewhat incomplete and confusing/contradictory. Some features that were described in the manual did not function and some functions referenced on their web site were not properly described in the manual.

This is a terrific product. It's easy to set up, prints exceptionally well. I have another similar printer and the cost per page is very low. The cost of an ink cartridge is a bit high but it prints many more pages per cartridge than any other printer I've owned. Printing is much less expensive than a Kodak Easy Share printer which I replaced with this one.

I read and hunted down a MFC machine that would give me beautiful, quality color photos, clean, crisp text, easy to operate, great scanner and fax. This machine is near perfect. She's a tad slow, but it's worth the wait. Buy yourself a CISS system for about 25.00 on ebay and you can print 8x10 color glossies all day long. With my current setup up it is runnning me the equivilent of 1.50-1.75 per refill of any given color. Dirt cheap.Oh yes, a great color photocopier as well and duplexer. There are lots of specials on the net: a low at one point of 229 at N**EGG. Staples runs specials on this on and off, I paid 250.*** August31 2012 My Brother MFC-6890CDW is now been in use daily since I wrote this review nearly 2 1/2 years ago! Break downs? NONE. Design issues: NONE. I use a 3rd party super large, refillable ink tank system and have reduced my cost to pennies per print. Sorry I have nothing to complain about. I did notice the price has climbed significantly since my purchase and I'm not sure why? This unit is now discontinued, and I would happily buy a NOS should the need arise.

The printer worked great. Loved the wireless capability, color output was great quality. Automatic document feedback works wonders when scanning multiple pages. This was a great printer. Unfortunately, after a year of light use, it died. The black ink no longer prints, even though I tried two different brand new cartridges. I did a search on the Internet, and it turns out this is a common problem. The print heads are off poor quality. After sometime of use, the print heads, especially the one for the black cartridge, quickly dies. Now, I can only print color pages with no black, which makes the printer essentially useless. I'll use it as a scanner for now, but only until I get a new MFP.

I purchased this printer about a year ago and thought it was a good printer. I didn't care for the photo print quality but it worked good. Then suddenly for some reason it stopped printing from black. I tried cleaning the heads but that didn't even improve it. Changed the cartridges a few times. I figured that considering it'd take me a cab ride to/from a repair shop since I don't own a car along with repair fees it would come to the same amount that I paid for the printer which was $90. I ditched my Brother (which is the second one I've owned) and purchased a Canon printer which I am LOVING so far. It was at the recommendation of a few people. I will never purchase another Brother printer again.

Every netbook / computer in our house has a different operating system and yet every component integrates nicely with this multi-use machine! The installation on my Ubuntu Remix (lpia architecture) took a fair amount of reading and there was a small bug associated with the driver that was easy to fix. I believe normal Linux systems such as standard Ubuntu, RedHat, Debian, etc. would be much easier. The windows install is a breeze. We do everything wirelessly the only two cords used are the power cord and the phone line when sending faxes.Every function we have used so far works perfectly. The only option we haven't used yet is sticking a card full of photos in and printing directly - mainly because I like to crop photos, remove red eye, etc. first. The color printouts are amazing and I love the ease of making copies. The only con I can think of is that the self cleaning / check sometimes kick on by itself which has scared the hell out me as it is close to my bed and has woken me out of a sound sleep. I am sure there is an option to set the time and date it does this, I just haven't looked for it as of yet.I think what I love most about this little machine is the amazing amount of options and versatility this little machine offers for such a low price. If you need an all in one machine with a feeder that connects to just about everything for a small price this is your machine.Enjoy!

I recently replaced a Canon Pixma4200 with this in my home office so that I could have fax, copy, print, scan capabilities easily accessible. The initial set up was easy. Brother doesn't provide a disc with Windows 7 drivers, so you have to download that from their site (which was not difficult, but could have been easier - I'm reasonably good with a computer and figured it out, but some folks would have been left very frustrated) I've tested all of its basic features and it seems to work well. Wireless set up was very, very simple. I am going to keep my Pixma for times when I want crisp photos printed. This lacks a little where that is concerned. For a wireless multifunction machine, I am pleased.

Based on the high ratings for this printer on Amazon, I purchased this printer less than a year ago. Unlike some others, I did not have an easy time getting to the wireless to install properly on my current laptop (toshiba) or previous (ibm); had to retry multiple times on the ibm and finally gave up on the current machine. But the reason I rate this so machine so low is the ink.Having printed perhaps 3 documents in color (and 200 pages in B&W) in the 10 months, 2 of the colors, cyan and yellow, now claim to be empty, though my original black cartridge is still half full. What's most infuriating, however, is that the printer refuses to print even B&W documents until I replace those faulty cartridges. We all know that companies make much of their profit on inkjets from the sale of cartridges but this is absurdly dysfunctional.

This printer/copier was simple to set up. Unpackaged, installed software, plugged in and it worked. Unit does duplex scanning and printing as advertised. It had all the features I needed for a relatively good price. Unfortunately, the moment I took it out of the box I knew I'd probably made a bad choice. The build quality is very cheap and flimsy. Cheap plastic, poorly fitted parts. This translated into issues the first time I used it. The duplex scanner, which is something I'll use regularly, pulled multiple pages at once nearly every time I ran a job. The second job, a page got jammed in the feeder. I didn't get through a single job successfully.Print speed is also pretty poor while duplexing. I'm obviously not looking for the same speed that the $10k printers we have at work. Double the time is what I'd expect unfortunately it's more like three times longer to print a page. Non-duplex printing is as advertised. Duplex scanning is painfully slow.In the end, I returned the unit and just received a Canon imageclass D1120. All the same features but the build quality is *substantially* better. And it's $30 cheaper. So far, no jams, faster printing, better quality. I'll keep the Canon for a few more weeks and review it at that time.

I haven't tried scanning with it yet but a twain scanner is a twain scanner. This all-in-one printer copier scanner is an excellent choice for a small engineering company such as mine. The print quality is perfect for 11" x17" plan pages. I can also scan 11" x 17" sketches of dam rehabilitation drawings, send them to my CAD specialist and then print out the final plans on this printer. The print speed is quite reasonable. This printer really speeds up my whole office production. I can keep both ledger and letter paper loaded in the printer and available for my plans or reports.

If you're looking for a target about which to spout righteous indignation, this is a great printer to buy. I had it two weeks before I gave up on daily attempts to overcome problems by scrupulously following the manual. I phoned for technical assistance. No amount of "already tried that; already done that" would stop the girl from reading her script point by point. That took about 20 minutes. Then she said she'd "escalate" my problem to someone who might understand how printers work. She said I'd get a call back within two hours. In two and a half hours, I phoned back. Was told I'd just missed the technical support office. They close at 4pm eastern time. (If you have a day job away from your printer, I guess you're out of luck?) Asked for a supervisor. Waited. She was sorry for the inconvenience, but could do nothing productive. I boxed the printer up to return. I've now purchased a different brand. I'll not buy anything from the Brother company again. I did get a call from a lively and instantly likable person the next day (after getting home from an appt, at which I didn't have what I had wanted to print out). The competent employee explained that many companies are cutting back on customer service, and that the first round of scripted nonsense eliminated 70% of calls. Hummmm. Brother only has 30% of their callers spend the time, have the delay, and feel the frustration. If all companies do likewise, I'd rather have something made by a company with a reputation for making excellent products.

I really enjoy using the Brother MFC-240C on my Windows XP system! Installation was smooth, except I had to call support when my USB cable wouldn't fit into the USB port on the machine. It turns out I needed a USB AB device cable, rather than a normal USB cable. The Quick Setup Guide didn't mention this, but support was helpful and I found a 6 foot cable for $6.FAXING. I faxed my registration info with no problems, and received a confirmation fax soon afterwards. Since I have an answering machine (aka Telephone Answering Device) hooked up, I was concerned that receiving faxes would be problematic, but everything went smoothly. When I called myself to see if the answering machine still took voice messages, it did so with no problem.COPYING. I made some b&w copies with no problems.PRINTING. I printed out a holiday card with color images and text. It looked nice, and I had no problems. Here's how to disable bi-directional printing if you want to try saving ink: click the Windows Start button, go to Settings / Printers and Faxes; then right click on the MFC-240C icon, choose Properties; on the General tab click the Printer Preferences button, then click the Settings button.SCANNING. This was the only feature that had much of a learning curve. To take full advantage of this, you must use the ScanSoft PaperPort software that's included on the installation CD. To learn how to use the software, I downloaded the Software Manual from Brother's website (http://solutions.brother.com). You can also access it from ControlCenter3 (Device Settings, User's Guide). This information was very helpful, and I soon got the hang of it after some experimenting.ScanSoft PaperPort gives you OCR, book, multiple page, and file management options. If you want to use the Automatic Document Feeder, simply load your pages to be scanned, and scan from PaperPort. The docs will get scanned into a single, multi-page item. The OCR function was excellent. You can get additional info from within PaperPort (Help / User Guide).PICTURE CAPTURE. This was the only feature I didn't use.In general, set-up and installation was smooth (except for the USB cable), and all the features I tried either met or exceeding my expectations. I'm very satisfied with this unit and would recommend it for faxing, copying, and scanning. I have a laser printer, so this won't be my main printer. I plan on using it to print an occasional holiday card or map in color, and for this it's excellent. I purchased this unit refurbished from Staples for $30, and that made it an incredible bargain as well.
