5G wireless signal is a little bit too weak on my iPhone 6S from the far end of the house. Switched to 2.4G and it’s fine. 5G still works great on my laptop and other devices with larger antennas.
Router won’t connect to Private Internet Access on OpenVPN but works fine with L2TP VPN. I suspect this is an issue with PIA rather than the router itself. Router is auto-reconnecting to the L2TP VPN after each ISP outage so that’s a good sign. I have yet to test for IP leakage during the transition when my ISP comes back online. However I can say for sure that the VPN is passing IP and DNS leak tests while it is connected. You will have to go to the router’s WAN settings and enter your VPN provider’s static DNS addresses in order to prevent DNS leaks. Overall, I’m satisfied with the router’s VPN capabilities and VERY happy with the consistent auto-reconnect keeping the VPN always on.
Original Review:
Been online for a few minutes and ran a speed test pulling a 2GB file from my network share.
Wireless speeds at 60Mb/s from about 35ft away through multiple walls.
Standing about 10ft away through 1 wall I was getting around 100-160Mb/s.
Standing right in front of the router I got 300Mb/s.
Test was conducted with a mid-2010 MacBook Pro on the 5G wireless only. It may be worth noting that this MacBook’s maximum wireless speed is 300Mbps. All other devices in the house were on the 2.4G network at the time, so this does not account for everything, but it’s a solid demonstration of the router’s capability for 300Mbps of actual throughput in optimal conditions.
Overall, an excellent wireless performance so far. As many other reviewers have stated, the bottom line here is that I’m getting viable whole-house coverage from this single device.
As for the web UI, it’s user friendly enough for anyone who has configured a router before. The only irritating feature is that any changes you want to make have to be applied immediately, and each change requires a reboot. This is fairly common practice for SOHO router web UIs, and for good reason, so ASUS loses a star on UI but not on the overall rating.
I haven’t tried to use it yet, but the router’s VPN setting offers PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN options. I will update this review after testing the OpenVPN and seeing how it handles ISP outages which are a daily occurrence here.

All that aside, once I got in I was pleased to find a fully functional GUI with lots of choices where I could easily rename my SSIDS. I enjoy having a separate 2.4 and 5.0ghz band because it seems to work better than the ones where they theoretically do the switching on their own, as far as I've experienced with identical versions of the cable company router. The newer GUI of the identical cable company router only had 1 SSID and the performance on a brand new router was 1/5th of that of the old "faulty" one we asked to be replaced!
The speeds on the thing are awesome, the coverage is WAY better than the stupid cable company router. I have a 1900 sq..ft house and it's strong everywhere. My husband's speeds went from something terrible like 30mbps to 200! I'm sure tech support was better before COVID but I was disappointed to have no one to chat with or talk to on a Sunday when the manual says they should (normally) be open. I'm sure this is a universal problem among companies now so I didn't ding it a point in the star rating. But if you see more reviews with the same complaint about the default language being wrong, that's not a good thing. I'm assuming mine was a one-off.

ASUS ROUTER

If you get stuck with the same idiocy, at the first 2 menu prompts enter the default username ("admin") and default password (*****) in those 2 fields. Then it will cycle to another Chinese page (with one line in English!) which appears to demand that you change the default password and it offers 3 fields to complete. The first (top most) field wants the default username ("admin") and the next 2 fields want your NEW password. Enter your new password and it will allow you to login and get to the main menu - in Chinese. At that point look in the upper right corner for the icon to change the language in English.

Good signal strength
Easy to use menus
Can use assigned ips or reserved dhcp ips
Network status and map is easy to understand
Get started documentation is easy enough
Negatives are just annoyances
2.4 and 5ghz require separate configuration and can't just copy devices from one to the next when using mac filtering
It sometimes forgets the extra info you add to a device. For instance you can add a printer icon or Mac or PC or laptop icons to maker visual network maps clearer. These things sometimes need re-adding
The biggest negative is the USB 3.0 port. If you want a simple network backup, you might want to look at a NAS and avoid plugging anything in here. I plugged a Seagate BU HD in this port. Just wanted something easy to send incremental backups at night. Not a media streamer or anything complicated. Since I did this the device reboots ten, twenty times a day with corresponding network outages. It flat out lacks the processor to handle basic file management tasks. Nothing big, just moving files, usually in 1 direction only. If you need to peek into the drive via File Explorer, good luck.
Which brings me to this router's biggest fault. Anytime ANY change is made, the router needs a reboot. Some reboots are quick (as in <2 minutes), some are long (as in >8 minutes), but it takes your network down while you add a user, device, MAC address, whatever. Working with a USB BU drive will cause this to happen many times until it is fully configured and the tasks are scheduled and automated. If you click on the USB device status, the drive space is never correct. Why bother?

First, I plugged in the router. No lights. Dead power supply. Used power supply from old router just to get
going. Called ASUS support figuring they would get send me a new power supply, right? No dice. I would have to return entire unit to Amazon or them and wait 3-7 business days. Got a supervisor on the line (Javhan), told me same thing. Even though router was fine, I would have to return entire package and get a new one (and go through their archaic setup once again)
Finally, logged in and yellow flashing symbol appeared indicating a firmware update was needed. No problem. Did it, router rebooted and then flashed that a firmware update was still needed. Called tech support and was told you need to manually download the firmware update from their support site when more than one update is needed. Did so, but the router locked me out. Took tech 30 minutes to get me back into router login (all the while his headset microphone kept cutting out making me repeat everything I said 3 times.)
Horrible experience...router is working now (with my old router's power adapter) and should I need to go back to use my old router, I will just spend $5 for a power adapter. Thanks for nothing ASUS support.
Update 8/31. - bought a better more expensive ASUS router (AC1900 - 68U Model) for my primary residence and had a much better experience. Much better WiFi range but not enough for a large house so bought a second one and setup Aimesh. Very good results l. Returning this one for my vacation home and getting another AC1900
Morale of the story. Don’t expect much from an older cheaper router. Spend the extra bucks and get an Aimesh one. You’ll be glad u did.

I should have known things were going to be interesting when I got everything plugged in and logged in to the router UI and it was in Chinese with no option to change language. Here's a list of issues you might also run into and their solutions:
Problem: Default router login page/router.asus.com is in Chinese
Solution: The change language option is only accessible after you've logged in, so you'll have to login with the default admin/admin, then you'll be presented with a change password screen (Also in Chinese), the top field is your old password, the bottom two are the new password. Fill these in and you'll be presented with the main UI where you can change your language in the upper left. Alternatively, you might be able to use the Asus router app to set up, see below.
Problem: Asus's router setup app doesn't find my router
Solution: Set the wifi and password on your phone to match the defaults on your setup instructions. I wasn't able to get this to work but maybe you'll have more luck.
Problem: Endless resubmit information loop in Asus UI in Firefox after resetting password
Solution: Just cancel, I don't know why it does this.
Problem: Update firmware fails/update firmware notification won't go away
Solution: Download the router firmware from the Asus site, unzip, and manually upload the file on the router's Administration > Firmware upgrade page. See below if you can't access it due to an error.
Problem: Error is blocking the firmware upgrade page
Solution: If you get an error saying it can't contact the Asus firmware site, you will have to reset your router to defaults (press the button on the back for ~5 seconds) to access the firmware page entirely. It won't even let you upload manually since that error blocks everything.
That said, now that things are set up the wifi signal seems very solid and I'm not getting any of the video call dropouts and hiccups that I was getting previously. Good luck!
