I purchased four of the WD Red 3TB hard drives for right around $140 each. I purchased this hard drive for simply one reason... the 3-year manufacturer's warranty. You can't beat that! I installed all four hard drives in a NAS device that runs 24/7. The likelihood that one of these drives will fail within the next 36 months is rather high when using a WD Green drive. I will update my review if any fail or if I have problems, but until then... things are running great!

Stuck this into my Ubuntu 10.04 media server box as the second disc of a mirror - the other disc is a WD Green. The Green was nearly full - 2.6TB in use out of 2.7TB total. It took the array 6:15:08 to completely sync the WD Red, for a sustained (sequential) transfer of 121 MB/s. That's not bad at all given the price point of the two discs in question. Obviously random seeks would be slower, but that's a pretty good sustained average. Now we'll see how they hold up.

These appear to be great drives. Quiet and fast enough to stream HD movies via a Zyxel NSA320 enclosure. Write speeds are plenty fast via Gigabit ethernet. I opted for a JBOD configuration as opposed to RAID, so I can't comment on RAID performance. If my media server/backup enclosure had more drive bays, I'd buy more of these without hesitation. I'm hoping their energy efficient design will help them last a long time. We'll see...

I've used this series of drives in many corporate offices. Now for my own company, I will use only Red series drives. I've paired two of these drives for use with a Synology DS213+. Rock solid combo for the last 30 days. Should this change I'll update this review.Expensive? Yeah, they cost more than desktop series drives. My data is worth it. I've never had an issue with WD customer service regarding drives that are still in warranty. I also believe in redundancy so I backup to multiple locations multiple times to put the odds in my favor. And the WD Red series is in all my onsite and offsite backup stations.

Ordered two for my file server, one worked perfectly, the other would read as 2GB, then as 700GB, and then nothing. Amazon cross shipped a new one that is working great. 50% star rating for a 50% initial failure rate.Other notes: Runs cooler than my other WD blue and green drives, but not as cool as my Samsung drives.4 month update: Reduced the rating to one star as the WD Red drives will not respond after being turned off for a week. It is sad to see such a high failure from WD these days, good thing they have three-year warranties, it looks like I will be sending in these drives to WD quite often.

I ordered 3 of these for my Synology DS413 NAS/Server in February and also 3 more for another Synology NAS/Server. All 6 drives are running strong without issue. Although time will tell how robust these drives really are, for now however they're running cool and quiet with no performance issues.

This was added in our file-server for an architectural office. We are constantly accessing files in the 3-10GB range with intense local fire-sharing, so I was looking for something that could really fly.After about a month of use, the drive acts more like RAM or SS drives than a typical hard drive. Response and data transfer rate is virtually instant, even for very large files. Installation is easy as the casing is quality and refined... no badly formed edges.I can't hear a thing from the drive, and have had no hiccups whatsoever. I fully intend to add more of this unit as our need requires.

My laptop has hit 6.7 on performance benchmark. I would say it is like new but actually my three year old laptop is performing faster than if I bought a new one. SSD has arrived and is the bomb.

Added these drives to my home server as data storage drives. Am using Windows 8 Pro and have it set up to use as a server to supply 9 computers and devices on my home network a central storage location.After five minutes, the drives are set to power down if not being accessed.Being SATA III, access and write times are fast. Have accessed video's from three different devices at the same time with no stutter.Giving FIVE stars because they have surpassed my expectations.Will be ordering four more and adding to the storage pool in my server in the near future

I picked this drive after a stellar review on StorageReview, which said it is the go-to choice for 24/7 always on RAID and media servers. I put four in my CineRAID CR-H458, and they have worked like a charm--zero problems initializing, no dropped drives in the month that I have had it. They are virtually silent--I cannot hear them over the near-silent fan in the RAID box, even when accessing data. After hours of continual writing--copying 3TB of files--the exhaust from the box was barely warm.Time will tell, but my initial impression is excellent. Highly recommended.

I bought this HDD to replace my Hitachi Deskstar 2TB drive in my Synology NAS.The reason I wanted to replace the Hitachi was that is was SO NOISY! That thing could wake me up when it spun up!So far the WD drive is extremely quiet in comparison, and data transfers are now noticeably quicker.I cannot say much about the reliability since I haven't had it for long, but overall, I am very satisfied with making the switch to this drive.

These drives are great for my uses. I have 4 of them configured as RAID 10 on a Win7 on a ASUS M5A99X motherboard with 16GB memory and so far they seem to be doing quite well. Drives are quiet and data access is fast. These drives were designed for RAID operation and so far they are producing. No problems at all technically. Amazon delivered very quickly.

Quiet and 2Tb is enough for me. Using as a boot drive which is slower than my previous Caviar Black that Blew up. Honestly saved 70 bucks going red than getting a 2 TB C.black.Will be purcahings an large SSD soon for the boot drive. Im confident this drive will last a while because I have perfect hind sight.

I purchased two of these to go into a new Netgear NAS. So far they are operating perfectly. I can stream video to my Panasonic Plasma TV over my network while another computer is backing up huge picture files, without a hiccup.

the WD RED drive is little more than a WD Green drive with certain firmware features not disabled.Western Digital's drives used to allow a feature called TLER to be enabled, which would limit the amount of time the hard drive spent trying to recover damaged data. The reason is that if a drive spends too long on recovery, the RAID controller will assume it's bad and drop it from the array.Sadly, Western Digital removed this feature, presumably to force purchase of more expensive drives which are the same as cheaper models, but with the minor software difference described above.WD Red is WD Green with TLER.

I bought two of these drives for a NetGrear ReadyNAS Duo. Both drives arrived in good working order. After installation and formatting, no error or bad sectors were reported. Installation was very simple, hot swap and reboot NAS. I've had the drives running for two weeks, so far so good. Performance is good. These drives replaced two Seagate Barracuda 1T drives. No real discernible performance difference.

Have been running 2 of these drives in a RAID 1 array for nearly 2 months in a QNAP NAS device. Have had no problems and the drives can only be heard when the room is dead quiet. I use these to backup my computer over a 1GB/sec network. The backups complete as fast as another drive I have connected directly to the computer via an eSATA connection. Very satisfied with these drives.

I would strongly recommend that no one by this drive. It is unstable and very likely to fail. Spend more and get the WD RE 4 TB Enterprise Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, 7200 RPM, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD3000FYYZ. I had the drive running in my Synology DiskStation DS112+

By far the best consumer drive for mass storage. This may not be the fastest drive out there but it works and does so without crashing, unlike some competitor drives. I purchased four for a NAS and they have been working flawlessly since.

I've had two of these for about two months now and they are excellent. I read so many stories about drives malfunctioning, errors, dead on arrival. These run cool, quiet, and everything we were looking for. Already thinking about getting two more to fill out the other 2 bays as soon as they go on sale.

I purchased 20 of these drives and installed 16 in a SAN as a RAID 60. In one morning 4 disk failed, rendering the RAID array dead and the data lost forever. These drives appear to be totally unreliable.

All 5 disks arrived packaged very well and sealed in static bags.Install all 5 at the same time in a Thecus N5550 for use in streaming media and backups of local computers.Disks run very well in RAID configuration, are very quite, and provide great performance. All were fully recognized by the RAID array and passed long SMART tests.Will be purchasing more if I need to expand the array!

Bought 5 of these for my brand new Synology DS1812+ NAS. I am extremely impressed with Red. Super quiet and cool. SMART reports all 5 drives runs around 27-30C. My WD Greens were around 42C. I will only use WD Red in my NAS from now on. TLER is awesome. Also Synology NAS is rock solid and put these drives to sleep perfectly every time with no issues at all.

I have 2x Netgear RNDU6000 NAS boxes, both of which have six of these WD Red drives. I could not be happier! The normal transfer rate between my workstation and the NAS is around 105MB/Sec (both reading AND writing). One NAS is a backup for the other and each is on its own UPS, so I believe that my data is VERY securely stored.I also have four of the same drives in a RAID 5 array in one workstation.I wholeheartedly recommend these drives!

Hope it is reliable but I have not had any issues. Put in a NAS Zyxel NSA320 and performs well. It may last a couple of years due to the case being well vented and it turns off the drive when not in use. Overall good drive. AMAZON packed perfect some complained about this but the box it came in had the plastic sides and was an OEM WD box. No worries about damage.

I am using a red 3tb drive in my Dell 8300 XPS and it is great. Operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. So far it has been quiet and dependable. No problems with formatting or drive capacity. It has been performing well. It's great to have a drive with a three year warranty for a reasonable price. Would buy this drive again!

Probably great drives, but dead on arrival. It was weird, my computer could occasionally see the drive, and running various checks seemed to turn out ok, but could never get data on and off. The phone line is completel bulls***. I spent at least 4 hours on hold waiting for an answer. I guess they are swamped with failed drives. And it's not my computer, the crappy 3TB seagate I had previously still connects and works (but clicks constantly). Is it too much to ask for one decent 3TB drive? Seems like every company is peddling crap now. Thank god for Amazon 30 return policy, would hate to pay more shipping for a widely defective product WD refuses to fix.

Pros- These drives are essentially cheap enterprise level hardware. They are compatible with most servers and RAID cards.Cons- Bad QA has caused numerous DOA issues. Out of the three I ordered 1 was dead. I expected this though so I am not too upset.Overall- Expect a high DOA rate in advance but if you get working drives they are great. It sure beats paying Dell 5x the amount you pay for these drives.

Not much to say after a short time in use, but I'm filling two of these with lots of data in a Synology 212j in a RAID 1 configuration and they're doing fine. Speedy and quiet. The 2 TB version I bought was a particularly good value compared with the 1 TB and 3 TB versions, especially on the small price dip I lucked into. The 1 TB price was only 15% less, and 3 TB 50% more.

Good news, these drives are really quiet and run relatively cool. They are also one of the least expensive 2 TB drives currently availble certified for use in some NAS models.

It's Western Digital, it's an excellent drive. Fast, quiet, and doesn't produce a lot of heat. I've been using them in a RAID 0 with no issues. Very stable.

Needed more storage for server and these drives were perfect. One out of the two ordered were bad however. I wasn't happy about this but I was able to easily RMA this back to Western Digital. Now both drives are working without problem.

Bought two to replace two WD 2TB Green drives in my Windows Home Server 2011 box. I have a high failure rate on the green drives and I store a lot of data so recovery from a failure can be painful. File copies internal to the server ran at between 100 MB and 150 MB per second. The cost for the drives are at a premium right now but Amazon was considerably cheaper than my normal supplier. I just ordered three 3Tb Red drives to build a RAID 5 array in the server and remove the remaining Green drives then I am going to mirror these two drives. If I had planned better I would have built larger RAID 5 array and not used the two 2TB drives, oh well...

Good:fast, quiet, low heat, lots of capacity.Not so good: After using 4 in an OWC Mercury Elite Qx2 configured for RAID 5. After 5 months of 24/7 usage one of the drives failed yesterday. mIf this were a DROBO I'd switch the drive for another brand or WD level of HDD. Being RAID I have to swap for an identical HDD.I recognize that this could be a batch QC issue.

I bought 3 of these from Amazon and another 3 from "NovaOvum" for a NAS build using FreeNAS. So far I'm happy with the build, but it remains to be seen how long these drives will actually last. I've been a little apprehensive because there are so many anecdotal reviews concern the frequency of failure. I'll update this review should things change regarding this drive.

For a new NAS. So far so good. All I want from a drive is that I put in in service & then never notice it again. That's exactly what these are giving me so far & their reputation gives me hope that my backups will be reliably handled for years to come.

I needed 8 of these drives (to go with my 8-bay synology diskstation) but for some reason Amazon will only sell a max of 5 to me?I bought 4 from amazon and 4 from newegg hoping that the drives would be paired similarly. So Amazon lost a purchase of a drive (or 4depending how you look at it) to newegg because they won't sell more than 5 to a single customer.WTF.

I have been purchasing enterprise drives for years. but they are pricey and i am just running media server etc. this is exactly what i needed. I own a 2 and a 3 TB version of these and they work greatNote if using in older NAS it might not support 3TB i got mine to work by reformatting in Linux and the coming back to windows

I ordered 5 of these drives to use with my drobo 5N, they work great and they all shipped fine.It has been less than a week since i started using them so i cant say much.I was hesitant in ordering drives from Amazon, but i'm glad to report that the packaging survived shipping without fault.Based on this experience, i feel safe in ordering drives from Amazon again.

I have had one of these 3 TB drives running in a Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage (DS213) for almost a month. The drive has been running constantly during that time copying data to CrashPlan's cloud storage among other things. The drive is running cool (around 80 F) and data read/write speeds are fast enough for me. The price has gone down about $20 since I purchased it. I'm confident that in the next six months to a year, the price will drop closer to $100 or lower. Once that happens, I'm planning to purchase another one of these 3 TB drives to bring the effective storage in the Synology up to 6 TB.

the drive is attached to my network via an IOCELL NDAS box for home media. drive is working perfectly streaming 720 movies with no problem. one issue i was afraid of was that the IOCELL NDAS has no cooling fan however as i writing a constant 500 GB over 16 hours the drive didnt heat up at all. So Far So Good
