I put two of these into a Windows Home Server 2011 using a plugin called Drive Bender to restore the Pooled Drive functionality that was lost from the 2003 Home Server version, mixed with several other hard drives. I've thrown 5TB of data onto the server, the majority of which has landed on these drives. When my server was writing data to these hard drives, the speed was typically between 70-90MB/s which is pretty good. Comparatively, my 3TB "low power" Hitachi is writing at the abysmal rate of 22MB/s.The 3 year warranty is really nice, although with any luck I won't have to use it.These are essentially WD Green drives with TLER, probably ones that test higher in quality control (less vibration, etc) get branded Red instead of Green. That's just my speculation though. When I ordered from Amazon, each hard drive came in it's own separate packaged box, within one large shipping box.

I waited for a big price drop before purchasing mine. I was interested in the 1TB Drives, but thought about the future of drive space. I was looking at WD Black drives, but there were too many complaints that RAID was not working (lies???), so I went with the RED drives, designed for Raid. For the last month and 1/2, they are working just find. Three (3) drives do add to the weight of my 56lb tower (COSMO II), pretty heavy. So the bad news: My Motherboard supports Raid 5 only on the SATA 3gb plugs. Finding drives for those were hard to find and too expensive (none in 2TB). I was considering a RAID 6gb PCI Card to improve the speed, but do not think the cost of that card is worth the additional speed. Who knows, it could save the drive from burning up at a higher transfer rate (hopefully not: damage the drives at a lower rate).

I initially made the mistake of buying from another well known seller who shipped it from the East Coast to CA - bubble wrapped in an envelope! Even before I opened the package, I knew the drive couldn't have survived the journey. It tuned out to have many problems and I ended up returning the drive and lost money on both side shipping.Ordered again from Amazon and it was properly boxed and arrived in great condition. I ran the surface test just to be sure and it was 100% OK. Its been couple months and I haven't had any issues yet. Note that I am not using this on NAS but just as a secondary data drive on my newly built PC.I recommend everyone to always run surface tests on any drive they buy to make sure that it is in good condition.

When I first built my file server, these drives were not available. I ended up using 4 WD green 2TB drives in RAID5. They were low power, but not very fast, which was expected. The price difference between the green and black drives was substantial. If these drives were available at the time, I would have bought them instead. One of my green drives failed, and I decided to order one of these to replace it. I ran basic speed/stress tests on the drive to verify it wasn't DOA, and then added it to my RAID.So far so good, and hoping it lives up. If any of my other green drives fail, I intend on replacing them with more of these. These drives are designed to be used in NAS environments, so they have a great balance between energy-saving and performance. As well as having firmware specifically designed to be used with NAS devices and software.

Drives run quietly and cool with zero vibration. SMART defect counts remaining at zero. Transfer speeds are good and power consumption is low for drives of this transfer speed and capacity. Single drive random I/O speeds could be better but in a NAS, what they are intended for, with data striped across several drives in a RAID5 volume, random R/W speeds are excellent!

Basically just what I expected to receive. The drives are stable, and of reasonable speed. Price can drop down a bunch, but there really isn't too many options if you want stable NAS drives. Was using WD Green drives till now, lasted an average of 6 months before burning themselves out in my Synology DS410.Can't wait for 4TB versions or larger to arrive for the same or lower price I received these for

I purchased two of these for my Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS212j (White) and I couldn't be more pleased! (Sorry, Amazon--I got mine from that Egg vendor up the road...since they had a combo deal and free ship going) Upon installation, it took 7 minutes to set these two drives up in SHR. (Synology's "enhanced" RAID1 configuration)WD brands these as "NAS Drives" with "NAS Ware", and they're pretty vague in their descriptions of what that actually means. However, after using these, I'll just take their word for it. They appear to have the power consumption of Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARX, but have access and write speeds closer to Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Internal Desktop Hard Drive - WD2002FAEX. I don't have any first hand comparisons, but I've read of several users setting up their same NAS units with other drives and experiencing LONG configuration times (re: several hours.) Comparing their experiences to mine (7 minutes!) I'm inclined to say "it's the drives man!!" But, again, without comparing other drives directly, it may or may not be.Bottom line: if you are looking for drives for your NAS, I've found these to be excellent!

Like the title says, I'm using it in my NAS to stream movies and music. It runs very cool, I had another drive in it side by side and the other drive was a good 10 degrees C warmer and both were in use.It took a lot of abuse recently, I ripped 50 DVD images to it, etc etc. I just ordered a 3TB version of this to replace the one in my NAS, and I'll use this one for offline backup.

I have been exclusively buying WD hard drives for a number of years. My original set of RE4 1TB drives has lasted a long time in a Synology 1511+ NAS. In order to increase capacity, I've been going with the Seagate 3TB models which have been the affordable option since the flooding. Now that the price gap has shrunk, the Red 3TB drives are a much better purchase for NAS environments. They run cooler and have a much longer warranty. So far, it's been great!

I'm writing this more than a month after my purchase. The HDD is installed in a Synology NAS (I recommend this NAS, it is an extremely well thought out product and beats everything I've ever come across hands down!). and it installed out of the box without a hitch. I see no lag / speed issues for a 5400 RPM HDD as someone previously also pointed out correctly this is not a concern.

I've bought 7 of these in the last quarter. 2 have failed, and one was DOA. This is disgusting, but about the same as everything else. My last run of Seagates had an even higher failure rate, and the less said about WD Green the better. The Red drives have worked fine until they start to fail, and I've always had warning via SMART.Bottom line, don't buy less than 3 of these at a time. Then use mirrors+spare, raid 6,10 or Z2.

I bought these for use on my Dell Win 7 64 bit machines. When it was first installed it showed up as two HD (2tb & 1tb) A little researched pointed out that you have to format it differently to get it to show as a single 3tb volumn. Then i began to move files onto it and after 250gb the OS no longer recognized the drive. Tried to reinstall it but the OS said it could not be formatted and refused to recognize it. Gave up after a day and then noticed in the Event log that the computer flagged it as a bad block. Back to Amazon it went. Refund was noted within 48 hours.Bought another immediately and it installed perfectly and accepted all my intended files. Was so pleased with the smoothness of the transaction that I immediatly bought a third one and that is whispering away as I write accepting oodles of files

This drive is running happily in a RAID with three 2TB WD Greens and has worked without issue since I bought it. The reds are better for building a RAID since they time-out bad reads faster rather than letting the RAID controller (hardware or software) think the entire drive is dead. I've been fortunate enough not to experience that with these disks but I've seen it elsewhere.I would definitely buy this drive again.

I ordered a Synology Diskstation and got 2 of these WD Red drives to go inside it. They have some nice design features optimized for use in a NAS and are just a little pricey but seem to be worth it. Installation was super easy. I have been using them for a month and the drives have been very quiet and totally hassle-free. They hibernate on schedule, wake up when called and just work. Of course, I can't comment on longevity after a month.

Reasonably-priced drives, decent warranty, trouble-free installation and operation so far. My initial assessment, after about a month of 24/7 use, is that they are exactly what I wanted.I'll update if I identify any problems; otherwise, I'd have to say that one would be foolish to use a desktop drive in a NAS system when these drives are available at such reasonable prices.

I did buy one that was faulty from another retailer that got a error after 2 months but western digital replace it after it had gone bad. The only downside is that it cost a few dollars to send it out. At least the one I got from amazon was good. I guess it is just a game of chance now a days to get a good stable hardrive.

This is an ideal way to expand any NAS storage capacity. This drive is robust and withstands greater than normal operating times and temps. I have had one of these for 18 months with it being on 24/7. No issues whatsoever. The disk access speed is more than sufficient for streaming files (in my case HD video) from my Windows Home Server (WHS) file server to my computers. And that's with it running in legacy PATA mode, too, not SATA mode. Very pleased with this drive. I have 2 now and I'll probably get a third.

Simple and straight to the point, this is a great hard drive. When I'm ready to expand I will be purchasing another one of these. With some hard drives I have had in the past you hear a slight noise whenever you are accessing data or writing data to the drive. This is as quiet as possible. I am using this drive for media backup and save my Blurays/ HD DVD directly to the drive and have not had a problem so far.

This is the stealth internal HD for an incredible capacity. I have a Mac Pro (tower) and two empty bays. I needed a high capacity fast drive to store and access my high def music and hobby high def movie making storage point. I've owned this for a week and absolutely amazed in the speed and quietness of this drive. I would suggest this to anyone still using a Mac Pro or tower PC with an extra hd bay to upgrade to this amazing WD product. It works and the WD support team are amazingly pleasant to speak with and helpful. That's why I keep buying WD internal and external drives for over 15 years. Awesome job WD, this is currently the Rockstar of internal hard drives in my opinion.

Nothing much else to report.I highly recommend you get this type of drive that are RAID/NAS friendly because if you use another drive that doesn't have TLER you're waiting for trouble when there's an error.Bought from Amazon (not a marketplace seller) and they came shipped fine. Would recommend these to anyone looking for a good value storage drive to use in a NAS or RAID. They'll work fine as single drives but don't pay a premium for it.
