These Western Digital Red drives are low-power low-performance 5400rpm consumer disk drives! They provide significantly less performance than any 7200rpm disk drive, such as the Western Digital Black and RE4 drives. They are too slow to playback 1080p24 movies without stuttering. Anandtech showed that these Red drives offer a small performance improvement over other low-performance 5400rpm consumer drives like the Green drives when you use them in a RAID configuration. But even in that situation, any 7200rpm drive will offer much greater performance. Bottom line -- these drives are only suitable for backing up your data on a low-power low-performance home server. Don't use them in your desktop or server unless you are willing to endure significantly increased read and write times. Shame on Western Digital for not publishing the spindle rotational speed of these drives.

After my initial hesitation to purchase these I went ahead and replaced the failing Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB drives in my Netgear NAS Pro with these. WD recommends using up to 5 in a unit, however Netgear had these on their approved list for the NAS Pro, which holds 6. These drives arrived packaged in individual boxes which seems to have protected them just fine. The drives were made in Jan of 2013 and all of them worked fine with no problems. They do run cooler and quieter than the Seagate drives. Access time seems to be about the same. So far all is well and I am happy with these drives.

Purchased 2 of these drives so far. 1 to replace a failed drive in my readynas pro business running Quantity-6 seagate 1.5TB AS drives and the other to start the total disk replacement of my NAS. I'm running 6 drives with dual redundancy and had a seagate fail after 4 years. Time to start thinking about a total replace one drive at a time as I don't want to worry about old drives failing. WD Red seems targeted towards NAS devices. I really wanted to put the WD Black drive in but economy dictated the WD Red drive. If you can afford to populate your NAS with the black go for it. I plan on buying 4 more of these drives to move my storage capacity up and also have drives under warranty.

I hesitated to buy this drive. One of the Western Digital 2TB caviar green drives that I use for system and data backups failed, and most of the reviews said that this drive was overkill for a backup drive. I beg to differ. There was very little price difference between this red drive and WD's "lesser" drives, but the speed difference is phenomenal! I have not gone to the trouble of measuring the actual speed performance, but this drive easily completes backups in less than half the time taken by my "green" drives. Also, since this drive is intended for NAS arrays, it is unlikely that there will be any data loss, which can be a problem with those drives intended for streaming media, where a bit or byte won't be missed. I would highly recommend this drive, and shipping from Amazon was super fast, as usual.

I installed this in my desktop as a backup drive. Worked great while it lasted. Quiet, cooler temps, and faster data transfer times. One day I noticed that the hard drive activity light was a constant red. I tried to access it through chkdsk, but it had trouble reading it and eventually found a bunch of bad sectors. Shortly afterwards, the operating system and the BIOS could not see the drive.I do have to credit Western Digital for their quick turnaround time to receive the RMA Recertified drive. Hopefully this one will last longer, but time will tell.

After having all five of my Seagate 7200.11 drives (three old, two brand new) fail within a month of each other, I decide to go back to Western Digital after years of avoiding them because of the silent TLER firmware snafu they perpetrated. (To be clear, I didn't mind them dropping the feature from consumer-level drives to push people to more expensive commercial or, now available, Red drives. What I minded was them silently dropping it in the middle of a production run and failing to tell anyone that their website claims of the drive being suitable for use in all consumer desktops were now totally false.)After a month of continuous but light use in a ZFS box, these three WD Reds have been infinitely more stable than the Seagates. Only time will tell if they hold up like my pre-TLER-snafu WD drives have.

Working for one month now without flaws. Using it in a simple JBOD setting for backups.I am hopeful it will sustain the test of time. If so, I will go with those drives from now on, since my one year old Seagate drives fail one after the other, and the painfully obtained replacements through self paid return shipping from Seagate fail even faster. No more Seagate!I used to buy Samsung 2TB drives, of which 8 are running flawlessly without a single failure yet. But since those drives are Seagate as well now, they are no longer an option for me either. Hopefully WD will be reliable again. Will report an update in a few months.------------------ UPDATE 2/25/2013 -----------------------The drive FAILED after running 3 months flawlessly. Disappeared from windows explorer and never came back. SMART error. Initiated RMA today...

Got two of these Red WDs and they came well packaged and so far it is a very quiet unit. It feels very well built. You can tell by the heft that this is not a flimsy HDD. It is a 7200 rpm disk speed though it is not mentioned anywhere, well hardly anywhere. Looked all over for that one. I am an avid gamer and got these to place games on and just to have a back up just in case. Took the OEM Hitachi out after all the transfers and system images on external and now use these two as strickly program files and could not be happier. The OEM was a tad noisey and these are quiet as a mouse.

Add two new Red 2TB drives to my new Synology DJ212j. After two months of light usage one of these drives started freezing up and reporting bad sectors. Now I am left trying to replace the drive with WD. They send over refurb units as replacements which is not what I want for protecting my data. Guess I will be buying two new drives soon but you can bet they will not be WD drives. Very disappointing to say the least. $240 down the drain. If this is their best drive on the market its a sad sad day for WD. Thanks for nothing!

After mulling over many options for my Synology DiskStation 8-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage - Black (DS1812+) I opted for five (and soon more) of these drives. I did so based on the specialized firmware and warranty, as well as my limited need for absolute speed (this is a variable RPM drive) due to the performance benefits of a RAID array. It's hard to honestly say much thus far other than the fact I'm very satisfied with the performance (due in part to the Synology box and in part to these drives), had no issues with reliability, and the drives all give SMART data indicative of the firmware claims.FYI, if you are building a RAID array, feel free to look at Hitachi (if you can find them) or Seagate drives, but do yourself a favor and do not consider WD Green or Black drives, as Western Digital do not give those drives the appropriate features in firmware for RAID, and Green drives can create havoc due to their shutdown timers.I'll update this review in six months (or in the event of a tragedy, sooner).

Things to know:1) I didn't buy these from Amazon2) They were only shipped in a plastic clamshell inside a larger cardboard box.3) I ordered 2, both of which worked great with no errors.4) Ran extended tests via WD Data Lifeguard and full formats (10+ hours to run both for each drive)5) Formatted via GPUID to unlock 3TB capability (avail size 2.72tb after format)6) Super quiet drives, can't even hear them spin up.7) Running in a windows 7 Mirrored array.8) Bought for $138 each after instant rebate and mail in rebates, early Nov 2012.I am posting this to show buyers that most people receive them and they work fine. I was tentative too, but I didn't need them urgently, and I was confident that if they weren't DOA and I ran as many tests as possible I wouldn't be disappointed. Failures suck, but at least WD stands by their product... albeit with some inconvenience for the buyer.

I ordered 4 WD Red 2TB drives. Three are fine, one DOA with "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". It cannot be formatted. My NAS recognized the drive but didn't allow any action. My PC told me about the redundancy check problem and also refused to format it.This is frustrating because there are not many manufacturers of reliable drives left. Hitachi (in the past my favorite brand) is now WD... and with Seagate drives I also have a not so happy relationship. Thanks to Amazon for its return policy. I need drives so I will give the WD Red another shot. I hope that this was just bad luck.

I bought 2 of these to throw in my Synology DS413 and they haven't let me down yet. I'm running the Synology hybrid RAID. If I encounter a problem I will immediately buy another and ship the bad one back to Western Digital. But so far, I've had no problems and the speeds are acceptable. It's a home NAS so I don't have excruciating requirements or expectations of these. I do my backups wirelessly so I'm not expecting super fast speeds. My NAS streams to my tablet just fine over wireless. Good purchase. Probably going to get a 3TB to expand in the future.

After considerable research into drive manufacturer reliability, and then into WD's products specifically, I purchased two of these for installation as a RAID 1 configuration in a NAS4FREE system. There were no problems at all in having the drives recognized by the system (although the MB is several years old). The drives are very quiet and do not seem to produce excess heat. Performance is certainly more than adequate for my installation. I may be ordering another so that I can change the configuration to RAID 5.Packaging of the drives was fine: there was plenty of padding in the main box to keep the drive boxes from shifting around.[02/12/13 Update] - absolutely no problems so far - drives running cool (25C) and quiet! Still haven't decided on going to RAID 5, though ;)

It's only been a couple days but I am thrilled with this new drive. I did a couple complete sector scans using the WD tool (~4hrs each scan for a 2TB HD) before putting it into service and it's in perfect shape. Amazon packaging was wonderful in shipping this safely.I am very pleased with the performance, the super quiet noise level, and how fast it "wakes" (even faster than my old 7200 RPM WD Black drive!). While the access latency is slower than Green or Black, for file serving it doesn't make any difference (don't use a RED or GREEN drive as a system drive!).I am very pleased I got this over a Green drive even though I am not using it in a NAS.

After 2 weeks, power went out (correction: power-down) and one of the drives showed as corrupted... replace after restart. I thought these drives would do better. I have a replacement on order and hopefully will not destruct like this one.UPDATE - 01/19/2013New Red Drive has been installed for just over a week and both it and the older (by two weeks) drives seem to be working well together. Now, I run the DS's S.M.A.R.T. test every day to check the drives out for any issues. I am waiting for the new drive to run with the current data on the DS for a while before I really start using the system.

I installed four of these Red drives (3TB) in a Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2. The drives worked perfectly out of the box and run cool and quiet. I can't speak to the long term reliability as I've only owned them a week or so. Just bought 2 more of the same size (3TB) to install in a Synology NAS. I was a Seagate guy for many years, until they came out with the mega defective 1TB drives some years ago. Since those problems with the early 1TB drives, I switched to WD and have not had one problem with dozens of WD purchased since then.

I replaced a 2TB WD Green with this 3TB WD Red in my Media Center computer (Windows 7). I also upgraded the boot drive to an SSD, and only have the TV recordings on this large drive. Previously it could handle recording up to 4 channels of HD at once, but with the Red, I'll often see 1 minute recordings, where it tried to start 2 or 3 recordings at once, but couldn't keep up. It drops one of the recordings temporarily and restarts it a minute later, succeeding then.So in real life use, on a 300Mbps SATA link in this older computer (2009 AMD Althon 64), the Red is slower than the green it replaced. But, I'm happier that I'm using a drive rated for 24 hour use, which the green is definitely not.

I put two of these into a Windows Home Server 2011 using a plugin called Drive Bender to restore the Pooled Drive functionality that was lost from the 2003 Home Server version, mixed with several other hard drives. I've thrown 5TB of data onto the server, the majority of which has landed on these drives. When my server was writing data to these hard drives, the speed was typically between 70-90MB/s which is pretty good. Comparatively, my 3TB "low power" Hitachi is writing at the abysmal rate of 22MB/s.The 3 year warranty is really nice, although with any luck I won't have to use it.These are essentially WD Green drives with TLER, probably ones that test higher in quality control (less vibration, etc) get branded Red instead of Green. That's just my speculation though. When I ordered from Amazon, each hard drive came in it's own separate packaged box, within one large shipping box.

I waited for a big price drop before purchasing mine. I was interested in the 1TB Drives, but thought about the future of drive space. I was looking at WD Black drives, but there were too many complaints that RAID was not working (lies???), so I went with the RED drives, designed for Raid. For the last month and 1/2, they are working just find. Three (3) drives do add to the weight of my 56lb tower (COSMO II), pretty heavy. So the bad news: My Motherboard supports Raid 5 only on the SATA 3gb plugs. Finding drives for those were hard to find and too expensive (none in 2TB). I was considering a RAID 6gb PCI Card to improve the speed, but do not think the cost of that card is worth the additional speed. Who knows, it could save the drive from burning up at a higher transfer rate (hopefully not: damage the drives at a lower rate).

Even before I opened the package, I knew the drive couldn't have survived the journey. It tuned out to have many problems and I ended up returning the drive and lost money on both side shipping.Ordered again from Amazon and it was properly boxed and arrived in great condition. I ran the surface test just to be sure and it was 100% OK. Its been couple months and I haven't had any issues yet. Note that I am not using this on NAS but just as a secondary data drive on my newly built PC.I recommend everyone to always run surface tests on any drive they buy to make sure that it is in good condition.

When I first built my file server, these drives were not available. I ended up using 4 WD green 2TB drives in RAID5. They were low power, but not very fast, which was expected. The price difference between the green and black drives was substantial. If these drives were available at the time, I would have bought them instead. One of my green drives failed, and I decided to order one of these to replace it. I ran basic speed/stress tests on the drive to verify it wasn't DOA, and then added it to my RAID.So far so good, and hoping it lives up. If any of my other green drives fail, I intend on replacing them with more of these. These drives are designed to be used in NAS environments, so they have a great balance between energy-saving and performance. As well as having firmware specifically designed to be used with NAS devices and software.

Drives run quietly and cool with zero vibration. SMART defect counts remaining at zero. Transfer speeds are good and power consumption is low for drives of this transfer speed and capacity. Single drive random I/O speeds could be better but in a NAS, what they are intended for, with data striped across several drives in a RAID5 volume, random R/W speeds are excellent!

I purchased two of these for my Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS212j (White) and I couldn't be more pleased! (Sorry, Amazon--I got mine from that Egg vendor up the road...since they had a combo deal and free ship going) Upon installation, it took 7 minutes to set these two drives up in SHR. (Synology's "enhanced" RAID1 configuration)WD brands these as "NAS Drives" with "NAS Ware", and they're pretty vague in their descriptions of what that actually means. However, after using these, I'll just take their word for it. They appear to have the power consumption of Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARX, but have access and write speeds closer to Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Internal Desktop Hard Drive - WD2002FAEX. I don't have any first hand comparisons, but I've read of several users setting up their same NAS units with other drives and experiencing LONG configuration times (re: several hours.) Comparing their experiences to mine (7 minutes!) I'm inclined to say "it's the drives man!!" But, again, without comparing other drives directly, it may or may not be.Bottom line: if you are looking for drives for your NAS, I've found these to be excellent!

Would be five stars but:Lots of DOAs. Ordered 4 from another site. 2 DOA. Replacement drives no issues. Drives have been running 24/7 for 2 months. Reviews on other sites show a similar pattern, but once you get good ones you're in for smooth operating. Very quite, and temperatures never get too hot.Highly recommend.

Bought two of the 2TB to use in RAID 1 (mirror) in my QNAP TS-212 NAS and they work great. No errors or SMART problems so far. They run fairly cool in my NAS under 40 C. Nothing much else to report.I highly recommend you get this type of drive that are RAID/NAS friendly because if you use another drive that doesn't have TLER you're waiting for trouble when there's an error.Bought from Amazon (not a marketplace seller) and they came shipped fine. Would recommend these to anyone looking for a good value storage drive to use in a NAS or RAID. They'll work fine as single drives but don't pay a premium for it.

I bought a server (a real tower server, not the little 'home servers') and dropped 2 of these in it in a RAID 1 configuration, and it's worked flawlessly. I almost bought 2 WD Black drives, but read baout the potential RAID issues, so I went with these instead. I don't notice a difference between these (5400rpm) and any other drives running at 7200rpm

Ужасно

Adorama shipped this disk to me in a plastic bag with one layer of bubble wrap around the disk drive.Absolutely no protection what so ever. But the disk appears to be working when I plugged it into my Dell.Despite my concern, I decided to keep it instead of returning it immediately. What a mistake !!!! The drivedied after 58 days of light use. Now Adorama will not make a refund or replacement so I have to go throughthe rma process with WD. I have a number of WD green & black drives & never had any problem which iswhy I kept the drive instead of returning it immediately. Learn from my mistake, poorly packaged drives candie later even if it initially worked.

Worked perfectly in my DirecTV Genie paired with aThermaltake Max 5 Active Cooling Hard Drive Enclosure with Two 80mm Blue LEDMake sure you get the older model of the Thermaltake so it has eSATA.It works perfectly even though it says it only supports 2TB, I get the feeling that only applies when using USB 2.0

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS and wanted to upgrade to 2TB drives. After reading reviews and horror stories on tons of other hard drives, I came across the WD Red 2TB NAS Hard Drive. I liked the idea of a hard drive designed specifically for a NAS and after reading many positive reviews I decided to order 2. After 2 months of use, I am very happy with the performance of these hard drives. They are quiet and run at a low temp. So far I have no errors or failures. They work as expected which is saying a lot for hard drives.

I have gone through many drives in the past in my NAS. This drive seems to run quieter and cooler than some of my other ones. Time will tell of course. I am glad there is a drive available at a reasonable price compared to the "Enterprise" edition's at 5x the price.

I built a FreeNAS 8.3 box and what better to provide storage than 4 of these guys along with a WD Green drive running ZFS RAIDZ1 (like RAID-5). I get average transfer speeds from my main PC to the NAS of 45-60MB/s using a gigabit Ethernet infrastructure. It would be better if I upgraded my PC's HDD to a WD Black, but that's another story. The WD Red drives stay fairly cool to the touch under most circumstances. The 4-port SATA-3 controller card I use gets hotter than all 5 HDDs.
