I am the sort of person who reviews hardware products and instantly goes for the 1-star reviews to find out what's wrong with it. I did that here before even posting this review, and am astonished by how many people report it failing after 1 year to 1 day.I can say I've had this drive for at least 3 years now, potentially 4, and it has never caused me problems. Never made any noise, never been too hot, never crashed or failed or disconnected.I should say as a caution that I have used the drive as a secondary storage-disk (not bootable) the entire time. It's still working, though.

What do you say? This hard drive was bought as additional storage for a media center I built last October, into which I put a WD20EARS 2 tb drive, what a deal it was only 70 bucks, and then the flood and they went to 170 bucks. So I waited until they were back down to 120 and bought this one (a later model of the same drive) WE20EARX 2 tb. before it came in and could be installed the first one failed at five or six months old and now the additional storage has had to become a replacement, time will tell if it better than the first. I BOUGHT WD based on reputation so it serves to say maybe matching isn't the best way to go. especially when you have lost 2TB of storage

I love Amazon, i shop on here religiously, however i bought this item 6 months ago, and i am just now finding out, that they sent me the wrong item. they advertised the model "WD20EARX", but i just checked and i got "WD20EARXSP" had no idea there was a difference. Unfortunately for me mine, is a Sata II not a III which explains why it's so horrifically slow. I believe it's also 5400RPM instead of 7200RPM. it's a great product overall, but if you order, check your model numbers with excruciating detail. I'm surprised I even found out!

I purchased this drive to use in a RAID1 configuration off an Adaptec 6805E to build a new VMWare ESXi 5.0 host. This is not an enterprise drive and that created a big headache for me. This is likely due the lack of error correction timeout control and other things about the drive that are not enterprise. I returned it for a WD RE 2TB (WD2003FYYS), an enterprise drive. I have a lot of experience with drives, but thought I would be able short-circuit good practice just this one time to save some money and get SATA 6.0 Gbps. It did not work out, although probably not because of the drive. Just be aware of the limitations when experimenting and save yourself some time. This might work great on an ICH10 or other ICH "host" raid config, but did not do well with the Adaptec. The initial build time of a 2.6TB RAID1 array was 64hours over Thanksgiving. Insanely long. This was done within the Adaptec boot-time configuration utility and not with the system running an OS.I have had great experience with WD.. having worked at a company where I used thousands of them. Using the right tool for the job is always a good idea and will generally save you money and time.. I wrote this for you folks that might be pondering the same idea. I did this on an older Mukilteo host with PCI Express 1.0 x4 slot.flintrockco

I have tons of WD drives and they've been around for awhile (including two 2tb 'green' drives), so I decided to give this one a chance even with the half/half ratings it had. This drive is great! Popped it into my esata dock, turned it on, and windows disk management saw it instantly, as the full ~2.7tb. Initialized it, making sure to pick GPT, and then formatted it. Windows saw the whole partition, no fuss.To test the drive, I did a low level format, then a disk check. When both came back fine, I copied as many files as I could fit on the drive, and then did another disk check. Came back fine again, so I ran DiskMark to see what speeds I was getting. When the drive was almost full (~3gb free), I was averaging around 30-40MBps. after I reformatted and ran the test again, I averaged ~60MBps. Compare this to a smaller hard drive and you will see that this is considerably slower. (I just ran DiskMark on a full WD 500GB drive that's about 5 years old, and it averaged 80MBps)However, 30MBps is plenty of speed to stream movies, which is what I'm using it for. This drive won't make the best boot drive, but it makes a great archival one.As I've only owned it for about a week now, I can't comment on long term reliability, but I will update if anything happens. For now, I do recommend this drive.Edit 11.15.11After owning this drive for a couple of months now without any failures, it is a very attractive option. However, your mileage may vary, since mine seems to be a bit slower than a friend's who bought the same version (I was getting around 60-80MB/s while the drive was pretty full when I was copying files to his). All-in-all it's a good drive.

I purchased several different 3TB drives (WD, Seagate, Hitachi) for a RAID storage computer. I had a hell of a time getting it to work-- I kept getting drive errors, device timeouts. I wrote some testing and diagnostic programs; I swapped out every variable (drive, mobo, raid card, even the enclosure), and yes I updated to the latest drivers of everything. The problem came down to the WD "caviar green" disks. When they were plugged directly in to the motherboard, they were slow. When plugged into drive cards, they timed out and failed. The Hitachi disks, in identical conditions, had 8x speed and never failed. When I put these WD drives in an external enclosure and use them as a backup drive for my wife's mac, they seem to work.. but they're totally unusable for use in a server, and I'm afraid to actually rely on them.

I've had previous positive experiences with WD drives and this one doesn't disappoint! It installed easily, is really fast and amazingly quiet! Installed it this afternoon, transferred files and did a full backup of my SSD. Have not heard a single sound come from the case, aside from the fans. This is the first time installing a secondary drive on Win 7, so WD's video on their site helped immensely. Until I watched the video, I thought I had done something incorrectly. Nope, just had to go through a part of Windows which is new on Win 7 to set up the new drive. If installing on Win 7, be sure to watch the video. It's short and pretty accurate. However, watch the examples on the screen more than listening to the woman speaking. The terms she uses are not what is worded on the screen, so can get slightly confusing if not watching closely.

As others have pointed out the earlier WD Green drives have had very poor reliability. I've had two 640GB WD Greens die within a month. Our current set is doing OK so far, but we aware of the IDLE3 timer. In an effort to be "green" these drives park their heads after 8 seconds of non-use. Fine, but if you are using them on a Linux system where the drives sync every 20 seconds, you can guess what happens. 3 head parks (Load Cycle Count for those who speak SMART) per minute. 1440 minutes/day = 4320 cycles/day. Given the rated life of 300K cycles, your MTBF for the drive is a whopping 69 days... There is a firmware tweak to turn the idle timer (IDLE3) to a more sane value, but this is "non-standard". We won't be buying anymore green drives. They may save power, but given that they go to the landfills 50x faster than other drives, they really aren't that green...

I received this as a warranty replacement for my EARS drive. I thought, oh, the EARX drive is probably better, being newer design.Wrong. 6 months. I have the drive properly mounted inside a commercial system case, with proper airflow, and all fans working. It's difficult when even active cooling isn't enough.I've come to believe that, short of paying for the "Enterprise" drive, this manufacturer's product is unreliable. No way I should have to replace the same drive, multiple times. This doesn't even account for some of the 3TB green and external drives which simply shut down while in use. This is probably why you don't see WD drives in enterprise systems. You see Hitachi and Seagate.Though, even Seagate has bad drives and good drives. My current "hasn't failed in over 10 months of power-on time" drive models are:* WD1002FBYS* ST32000542AS

I've had these drives running for about a month in a RAID 5 array with a RocketRaid adapter running Windows 2008 R2. Other than the long initialization, I've had no trouble with the drives or the performance. For big network file storage, this configuration is pretty much ideal. If high speed performance is what you're after, look elsewhere, like SSD's or a hybrid. They are very quiet and run cool.

A very short review:This drive is a good choice for upgrading or replacing your Tivo drive. I've also used the WD20EARS, which is the older version. This HD offers no advantage over the older drive for use in a Tivo.Use JMFS to transfer the data from your old Tivo drive. I used the Expand/Supersize options and I have over 300 hours of HD capacity. Also, remember to turn off the idle timeout (using wdidle3) or set it to 300 seconds, and you'll have no problem. Yes, it does work great in a Tivo.Highly recommended.

Well I got to say haven't had one of my 7 drives - all WD20EARX 2 TB drives - fail me yet. With my current movie count around 3600 if one were to go it would put a dent in my collection. They run quiet and don't put a strain on the power supply. When you have 7 media disks and one os disk all pumping out heat - it must be the green drives that keep the temp down. Yep, plan on more of these, might have to step up to a 3TB unit next time.

I picked up 5 of these for a NAS about a year ago, and the first one has already died. Since I bought them all together, I'm guessing that the other 4 are from the same batch and those drives will soon be on the way out as well. :(When they worked, they worked well. I've had pretty good luck with WD drives previously, but I guess these weren't stable enough.

First, I didn't buy from Amazon, but I found a 2GB ones of these drives on special from another company and decided to buy from them (I later found it here for the same price). When the drive arrived, I plugged it in to my USB 3 shell and formatted it, I then ran Acronis True Image to back up my boot drive - it failed, reporting that it found errors in the backup file during the comparison at the end. I tried a full format (the first had been a quick format), which completed without errors, and then tried the backup again - same error. To test my system, I installed an old drive I had around and repeated the process without any problem, so I had a bad drive. I sent it back for replacement. The replacement drive arrived yesterday. I plugged it in to the shell, started Quick Format, and Windows reported it was unable to format the drive. I tried a few more times (after rebooting, checking connections, etc.), with the same result. So, the drive is going back for refund. And I've just ordered a 2 GB one from Amazon ($10 more, but it should work!).
