in May2012 the drive failed,I have used other Wstern Digital hardware that outlasted this drive,luckily,I had most of the data backed up on dvd

Have used WD products for years and was not at all disappointed with this purchase. Have installed as more storage in my NAS system. Plug n Play. How easy is that.

Took a chance on this drive due to the glowing reviews (even though it has some bad ones also). Never even got a chance to try it since it was dead on arrival.*EDIT* 8 Mar 2012Took another chance. Returned the DOA, and got another one from Amazon. It also arrived DOA. All my other hard drives that I have show up so I dont think its me. Gonna look for a different brand I guess.

its not the best but its stills ok... too expensive for me... but its worth it... I recommend to buy a Solid state drive instead of these cause this hard drive isnt the best at all...

Long time WD fan but 1 of 2 drives failed <30 days after purchase. Thankfully, and why the 3 stars is that they replace in advance. Now have another drive on the way.I'll keep using their products. I just wish the failure rate was lower. Maybe Amazon is really hard on the products?

My background - very experienced computer user. I have built them from scratch and play around with them all the time.I was excited about the prospect of this drive... energy efficient, SATA 3, 64MB Cache, 2.5 TB - sounds great. Even paid for overnight delivery.Unfortunately, the one I got worked sometimes, not others. Got messages around 'bad sectors'. Could not fix. Worked fine as an externally attached hard drive (most of the time). Did not work at all internally when connected to SATA cables.Sunday, I gave up and bought a Seagate Barracuda Green 2 TB drive at BestBuy. Connected the SATA cables and works flawlessly. I was up and running in less than ten minutes.I have had plenty of Western Digital drives in the past, but, this is my first "dud" from them. So sometimes you get a bad drive. It happens. Not happy about this drive, but, I wont necessarily exclude WD from the future. But, if the Seagate continues to run great, they will be my first choice.I will update this review if the Seagate goes down. (It would only be fair.)

I initialized it using a GUID Partition Table (GPT) and performed an initial long format. It formatted to 2.7 TB (3 TB actual). It finished in a few hours; then I copied it full of videos. Transfer rates were in the 90-100 mb/sec range. The source drives used for this copy operation were only SATA II capable, but current mechanical Hard Drive surface xfer rates don't exceed SATA II spec. anyway (3Gb / sec). Thus the SATA III interface (6Gb / sec) on this drive is overkill.It is now part of my Win 7 Media system and is being used as a buffer for my DVDs; allowing push button access to my movies without having to get up and load them into the DVD player each time I want to watch. Video plays back smooth and nice.Great price (apprrox $41 per terabyte) and I guess time will tell how reliable they are... ;-)Update 09/29/2012:1 year and STILL going strong. :-)

Just remember to set the jumper if you only have a Sata 3gb/sec MOBO. I plugged it in, powered up to Windows 7, and formatted the drive using the GUID Partition Table (GPT). Works like a champ.

I bought 2 hard drives, and had them installed in a RAID configuration using a synology disk manager. Everything seemed to work fine, until one hard drive crashed last night. It's disappointing to have stumbled into such bad luck, but I'm going to go ahead and purchase another drive. I'll see what happens.

I'm a computer technician who manages numerous client storage arrays. I purchased 6 (six) of the Western Digital WD20EARS drives in April 2011 to fill one array (previous version of the WD20EARX shown here). Two have failed (accumulative bad sectors) thus far. That's a 33% failure rate within a six month period. Luckily I have these setup in mirrored arrays or the data would have been lost. I have RMA'd one of the drives so far back to Western Digital under warranty. The replacement drive failed (Click of Death) in less than a week.I have a friend who manages a data center in South Fla. When I mentioned my predicament he told me he had experienced the same. It's his company's policy to purchase only Samsung or Seagate due to Western Digital's failure rate.Buyer beware with Western Digital.

I was never a fan of Western Digital drives...until I tried these 2 drives. VERY quite, fast...replaced two drives in a LaCie 2BigTriple and they now outperforms the original drives in both speed and sound. these drives are nearly silent...highly recommended!

Unfortunately the green drives are still unreliable. I have to replace this with another drive because of the horrible clicking noise the drive has started to produce in my Synology.

There are some other hard drives out there, but I got this one because WD knows how to make them to last and this is no exception. It is great, and I have had ZERO problems with it since I got it!

Great price and good product. Worked OK for more than 1 month now (02/27/12).Great for cloning master hard drive (i.e. just in case the master boot drive is corrupted)and use it as a backup hard drive to store large video files.Speed is OK as a backup drive.

I ordered an internal 3 GHz Hard Drive made by Western Digital so that I could store my photographs within my computer. The price was great from Amazon and the drive worked very well. It greatly increased the amount of data that i could store internally and made data transfer much faster than with an external drive. I like it very much.Jim Hyatt

I bought this drive to store backups of my desktop and notebook computers. I've been running it for about 2 months without problems. The access speeds are acceptable for a storage (video, backup, NAS) applications or as a secondary drive. However, I would not recommend this drive for desktop or gaming systems.Fortunately, I bought it at $150 before the great Thailand flood. Should have bought more. :-(Running FreeBSD 9.0 RC1 with ZFS using 4K sectors as a secondary storage drive. My primary application and OS drive is a Western Digital 1 TB RE4 SATA 3 Gb/s 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive - WD1003FBYX

I ordered the product asking and paying for the 2 day shipping, it took a week just for UPS to recognize the package in "track shipment, then another two weeks for it to get to me. i ordered 6 of these drives they are fine and work great but DON'T PAY FOR THE EXPRESS SHIPPING. it would have been better for me to drive across the country and pick them up my self with time to spare.

Length:: 0:21 MinsThe disk is very quiet and very low temperature, the only bad thing is that is programmed to turn off every 8 seconds to save power and it makes slow but already clear that temporalized and doing well now I have it in no problem sata II one.Greetings .... From Venezuela.

This drive replaced a failing Seagate 750 GB SATA on an eMachine. A breeze to Clone from the original drive. Quieter and faster, too. As for "the Amazon experience," there's none better in the purchase and delivery department.

Pros - This drive is awesome. Tested for over 24 hours without a hitch before format. Getting file transfer speeds between 130 - 115 mpbs.Cons - none yet.Other - Drive requires an advanced format partition. Must use xp jumper to use without proper setup. Advanced Format means the drive needs 4k sectors in order to read/write without errors. The drive partition must be aligned to a sector divisible by 8.Running - Ubuntu 11.10GUID partition tableEXT4 partition typeAligned to 2048

A perfect replacement and upgrade for the 2TB Apple Time Machine. Factory hard drives on older Time Machine's were apparently NOT a long-life item because mine died after only a couple years. So, rather than forking over the mega-bucks again... I decided to try replacing the HD. It was much simpler than I thought and with photo instructions I found online... replacing the 2TB drive with 3TB was "easy button" easy! This Western Digital drive is known for its quietness and it lives up to the reports. And quietness is important to me since my Time Machine has been moved from another room and now sits just above my head in the book shelf on my desk... and only if I listen very closely can I hear any sound! So, HUGE storage and SMALL noise... a GOOD combination!

I've been saving my DVDs to hard drive so I added this to my media server. This drive is very responsive despite the slower RPMs. I've been able to stream a movie from this drive while copying a movie to it without any problems. I've been using Western Digital drives for the past 10 years in all my system builds and they've been great drives, I couldn't recommend them more.

I bought four of these to upgrade our system. They are working right along, as expected. I guess when it comes to disk drives, the proof is in their longevity, so that remains to be seen at some point in the future. Get back to me in two or three years to see if they pass the real test of time. However, they came out of the box and started working without defect, so we are off to a good start.

Received in secure shipping , using Win 7 64x Home Premium, no problems installing or using this drive. For the last month have set Windows on a 500 gb C:\ drive & have installed all my programs that would allow it on the WD 2TB . So far so good & according to system info WD runs 20 degrees cooler than my other drives. Also b4 the bright idea to separate Windows & my program files, I used WD 2Tb as a primary HD , C:/ Windows installed on it & running without a hitch. Very happy w/ the drive,Final Answer !

I bought this drive in September from Amazon. I came back today because I would like to get another one. I will not be buying another one at this time because I only paid 79.99 3 months ago and for some reason it is double that price now. I guess prices are inflated for Christmas time.Great HDD but totally not worth double the price I already paid for one.

I have never had any issues with my WD Green drives and have used them for a recent WHS 2011 build. I have seven internal WD Green drives and they all work without issue. I planned on purchasing several additional drives for backing up my server but ever since the flodding in Thiland the prices has more than doubled.Guess I will have to wait until the supply channel is oncreased again and the prices drop to a more respectable price. I can't justify the price of these drives knowing what I previously paid.

A few months ago I bought a 2TB WD Black SATA III drive for $149.I cannot believe the high prices now, this is what I paid for this drive, I needed RAID so I bought 2.I must admit it is a little slower than the Black but it works pretty good and doesn't get as hot.I will buy the Black again but not for that amount of money, but I might buy the Blue in front of the green!

One couldn't be accessed. Another accessed at rated speed but couldn't be written to. The last accessed at 1 GB but read data did not match written. I asked that they be QAed before shipping, but; it appears that can't happen.

I've had this drive less than a year & use it in a dock for data storage. One day it just quit. Won't spin up. No sign of impending doom. Data now inaccessible. You've been warned.

This 3TB drive is not compatible with Windows XP SP3, It shows up as about 750G due to OS addressing issues (thank you microsoft), not the fault of the drive. Upon further research it looks like all 3TB drives will have this problem.

Product arrived quickly. My PC did not have a spare SATA power cable connection. Had to order a SATA power Y splitter. After receiving the power cable, installation was easy. The additional storage is great. BTW, drive does not ship with mounting screws, hence no 5 stars.

Have been checking prices on a 2TB WD HD the last couple days. I was seeing $125-$135 at NewEgg and TigerDirect as well as Amazon which I thought was a bit too high. Just for S&G I thought I'd stop at the local evil empire (BestBuy) this afternoon and found this exact same 2TB WDC WD20 EARX Hard Drive for $99 ! Wow.

I bought this drive after having 2 Seagate drives go out on me. This one works great even on the 6G/bsec controller. Thanks also to Acronis for their excellent backup software that allowed me to copy my "stuff" right over from the other, failing, drive I was replacing.
