Their mostly deployed within NAS (Network Attached Storage) units. Quiet, low energy consumption, service efficient and combined with 1, 2 or 3 of their siblings, they've been above average performers for our residential installation needs. Primarily to retain static (non changing) files such as virtual machines, pc images, music, movies, pictures and tv shows - they house this content, then allow other systems to stream locally on our network without any known or identifiable problems to date. We've purchased "other brands" in the past, including Western Digitals main competitor, and those particular brands prematurely went bad (like weeks or months post installation) - so much so, that WD has become the primary brand choice for our storage solutions moving forward.

I bought the earlier model of the WD Green 1 TB drive about 3 years ago, and it is still going strong even now. As such, I was not reluctant to purchase the newer, larger model a few days ago.It arrived right on time (2 Days b/c of Prime) in very secure packaging that made me confident it couldn't have been damaged even from an high distance drop during the shipping. It was fairly simple to install, but I did have two main issues with the installation. It does not come with any mounting screws at all, and I am lucky I had a few laying around in my garage so it was not too inconvenient for me. Also, it does not come with a SATA cable or a power cord, and, again, I was fortunate to have one set of those also.Took a few minutes to figure out how to get it to show up in 64 bit Windows, but after hitting Start and right clicking on "Computer," all you have to do is hit "Manage" and go to "Disk Management" under the "Storage" heading. Then the hard drive will show up, and you can format it from there.I did not use the Quick format option, and it took about 6 1/2 hours to format. After that, I immediately backed up 667 Gb of data to the drive, and it only took ~2 hrs or so.In summary:Packaging: 5 StarsEase of Installation: 2.5 StarsPerformance (So Far): 5 StarsSpeed: 4 Stars--Transfers great for storage purposes, but you probably would want faster for gaming purposes.Overall, it is a great hard drive.

First-table This is not about the brand, WD hard drives have behave well in the pass time its mostly about a mistake and the company client consideration, I have ordered a $146 USD 2.5 TB hard drive and instead they send me a 300GB huh?, I sent an email to the company explaining every thing and asking what would be possible to do to fix their mistakeand all they did was send me a stupid email with a copy and paste of a policy saying that they are not responsible of items out of the US (maybe understandable :/ ) but I emailed them back sort of like clarifying like "this is it?" and never replay me back so I had to re-order another hard drive OF COURSE NOT FROM THEM ! and it arrived good and fast, because of them I end up spending over $300us when I was just supposed to spend $146 :/ NOT COOL …. antonline

I have a total of seven of these drives between 6 on a raid array on one PC and one as a data drive (non raid) in another PC.They are slower at RPM speed than some other drives, at 5400 RPM so if you are someone who "needs" a 7200 RPM drive then you do not need this. They are however the CHEAPEST, MOST RELIABLE CHEAP drive out there. Unlike some brands who will sell you a 5400rpm drive for this, or the various drawbacks from externals, this drive is inexpensive, not annoying in its "green" power management (or needing to have it shut off) and its fast, I get good speed in my 6gb/sec Sata3 port, and overall think its great that for this price, I get a drive with a 3 year warranty, reasonably fast transfer rates despite a lower RPM (RPM is not everything apparently) and its a Western Digital (and not lower on quality) for the price.Western Digital have been reliable drives for me, for many years. I have some going back as far as 8 years old and still running (that does not mean one has never died) but it's not common. It's more common that the storage size becomes too small for me and gets it shelved than the drive fails.I am optimistic by the early performance of these Caviar Greens that I will continue to use these for a 3tb drive. For 2tb drives I prefer the Caviar Black (which is not made in 3tb size). I was apprehensive to go to another brand, so chose WD's lower line rather than risk a brand who has not performed well for me for years.Five stars are for the value, and the fact it delivers. I would like to see a 7200rpm 3tb from WD someday come around, such as a Caviar Black 3tb, but until they do, I am happy to buy these, despite I usually buy the Blacks (I do need bigger than 2tb occasionally) or like for my raid array which runs 6 3tb caviar greens, wanted the array to be bigger then 6 2tb blacks would achieve.Buy this drive with a clean conscience, it will work for you, and work well. I never have had a DOA from WD, I am sure it happens, but I have 6 pcs, and for that to never have happened, is great.WD! Caviar! and this time GREEN ain't that bad.In fact for its price, you cannot beat it.

Western Digital drives are a good product. This is my fourth WD internal drive (I also have WD external drives). Two are currently installed in my computer. A 320gb WD drive was replaced a couple years ago with a 1tb WD drive, not because it failed, but for a larger capacity drive. A nice feature is WD Acronis TrueImage that enables the operating system, program files, data files to be transitioned to the new drive. Another thing I like about WD "green" drives is that they run slower when idle. I'm very pleased with this new drive and look forward to many years of use.

My son was on a budget, and wanted as much space as his money would buy. My goal was 2TB but I found that most hard drives over 1TB had absolutely terrible ratings. I have had great luck with Western Digital drives in the past, and these green series drives have been no exception. I bought some 1TB green drives almost 4 years ago now - and they have been running night and day in a server at work without a single failure. It was worth throwing in a couple of extra bucks to get a *reliable* 2TB hard drive. No firmware updates or other nonsense necessary. We have had this drive for several months now, and no problems to speak of yet.

Considering that I paid $599 for a 52MB IDE drive in 1987...I'd have to say that things have come a long way. Anyway, I installed this drive in my (late 2009) 27" iMac and aside from not having special "Apple firmware" to report its temp to the system properly, it works great! It is a rather quiet drive and its performance is as expected! A work around for the Apple firmware issue which causes the system fans to spin at 6000rpm is to download a piece of software that utilizes the drives S.M.A.R.T. technology to report the drive temps to the MB. Once this is installed the fans calm down instantaneously!

I'm using this drive strictly as an external harddrive. After having one too many unpleasant experiences with externals, I decided I could have more security and control over the process by building it myself. I've been using the 2TB WD green for almost 3 weeks now. Its write speed is a lot faster than my last external drive, and it's great for streaming movies. I was concerned after reading some of the one star reviews, but it seems that those unfortunate people received drives that were dead on arrival. If you get a drive that isn't damaged or defective, this is a great option.

In spite of all the negative reviews, I purchased this drive back in August purely for its capacity, hoping that it won't be that bad. Two days ago I started hearing some noise and a utility revealed several SMART attributes were in the hot zone. The drive was partitioned into 6 GPT partitions, and the very last partition became RAW all of the sudden. A chkdsk /B revealed many bad sectors on the entire disk, and it's only been less than 4 months, and the drive was used for reading most of the time. I used to like WD more than SG, but now I think they are just the same. They keep increasing the capacity, but the quality declines. These WD caviar green drives are anything but green -- electronic waste is hazardous.Consider twice before making the purchase, because 3TB is a lot of data to lose.

Since 2 of my Seagate and a samsung HDD died this year, I decide to move to Western Digital as the only HDD I have working 24/7 for years without problem is my WD raptor. The price of this 3TB is good even if it's not the best, but I think that you pay for the best quality, it does't make noise, and the speed is ok for a green version. I use it in my media server and you can see HD videos without problem on various PC at the same time. So I'm happy with my new HDD.

Mounted in a 5.25 hot swap bay as I don't have room elsewhere in this computer. The old 7200 drive in this slot was hot and noisy, around 48C. This green drive in the same slot runs at 33C despite the poor airflow, and is virtually silent. I can barely hear it if there is no other noise, and a virus scan is taking place with lots of seeks. Otherwise it may as well be silent, as the SSD does all the work.Slow is relative, being a green drive it still has good throughput, but seeks will be slow if used as an OS drive. Excellent storage/media drive.

Received the drive a day early. Plus.No screws, but it said this in the description. Come on, really, you cannot insert four screws? No cable, ditto, said in the description. I do not recall any drive I ever purchased where it came with a cable.Installation went fine - no plus or minus to WD. Good design goes to HP.The software was readily available via a google search to the WD site. The imaging, however, did not tell me I *needed* to create a boot disk. I tried to clone twice without a boot disk and it did not clone.I created a boot disk, boot, and began the clone process. It is at about 75% right now.Well, I will have to come back and update later.Update: The clone process, as they call it, took about 90 minutes. Your time may vary due to hard-drive speed and capacity. My old drive was 500GB and 5400 RPM.I rebooted to ensure the new drive did indeed have the right files on it and it did. I just like to double check things.Powered down, swapped the SATA cables from old to new - left both drives in, but now the old one is the boot drive.Rebooted and everything is splendid. Thank you WD!

I have two of these. One I have had for a while, at least more than 6 months, and the other I just purchased. I guess you need to know how to format/partition the drive to get Win7 to see it. My son had a little trouble doing this, though I don't remember having any trouble when I installed mine. Though the performance is slow, the supposedly green features make it worth it. So far so good. I use Windows Media Center to record the local PBS channel using a digital antenna. Thus I am thinking of getting another one.

I purchased two of these drives to complete a home server. Less than 24 hours after first use one of the drives failed and was not usable. I returned it to Amazon. I installed the new drive and everything was working properly for 5 days, then both drives failed. I tried running some diagnostics and NAS tools on the drives, but nothing worked.Unfortunately, I am away at work for long periods of time and I missed my return/full refund window for the drives. Luckily, my data is backed up on a separate drive and nothing important was completely lost. The server was unplugged for the duration of my work trips.I would not recommend this drive due to such a high (in my opinion) failure rate in such a short time.

I use these for my machine for storage. The fact that they shut down after not being used is very awesome. I literally could count the dollars I have saved from these not spinning up all the time. If you are seeking storage solutions, these green drives should suit your needs. The quality is amazing and well-built. I have smaller Western Digital Caviar Green hard drives and it has been 2-4 years so far without any problems.I have read reviews in the past that people tried to RAID these. If you are going to put drives in RAID, DO NOT USE GREEN DRIVES.

System - Win 8 Pro x64, GPT partition, SATA_2 port, H77 chipsetWith all the, um, *stuff* you currently have lying around that needs a lot of space, look no further. WD's Green drives are the best at bulk storage. They sip power and can hold a stack of *stuff*. Don't bother using them as a boot drive, because they are substantially slow - loading files can take an additional 4-5 seconds occasionally as the drives wake up and access times are rather crap - you'd want an SSD at the very least in 2012 for a boot drive. As a secondary drive, they certainly fit the bill. The biggest problem is that 3TB is simply not enough anymore, and Hitachi's 4TB HDD's are overpriced. Come on, WD, bring out the 6TB 3.5" slabs.Oh, also if you are running XP, get a modern OS that wasn't built back when VHS's were popular, 3TB is not natively supported without clunky workarounds.

If anyone is having problems with this drive, and has been reading these reviews, he is no doubt aware of the problem with the 4KB blocks when using this with XP, and the two possible solutions of using jumpers or running an alignment tool. (If not, check out many 1 star reviews, many either describe the problem or else post links to discussions of the problem.)I went to WD's site to try to apply these problems, but found it rather tricky to track down details, so for the benefit of those doing the same:1. The jumpers need to go between pins 7 and 8. It is harder to find out than you would expect.2. As I wrote as a comment to another post, there is one problem trying to download the alignment tool:One thing to beware, the alignment tool is "Restricted download" on the WD site. It requires you to register your drive. Sounds like an annoyance? But no big deal? Well, one problem. My seller was selling a drive pulled from an external USB drive, so I did not qualify for the download based on my serial number, since it was not an internal drive. I found the tools later by searching for AcronisAlignTool, but it is worth noting that some of these drives may not have started life as internal drives and so wd support may or may not be available.Hope this helps users. As I had problems, I can't give it a 5 star review. On the other hand, that problem was, in aprt, because I bought an incompatible, or partly-compatible tools (and one that a less than scrupulous seller had ripped out of an external USB drive), so I am giving the drive 4 stars, so as not to drag down the review based on my own mistake and the bad behavior of a seller. I do dock it one star for not making clear the problem with the larger blocks (even on the WD site this is pretty deeply buried) and not printing a pin-out for the jumpers on the drive as was common practice for many companies (and even wd in the past). Such a pin diagram would have helped me realize block size was an issue much earlier and saved me much wasted time.

Changed out the origional HD for this one after cleaning it up inside, from all the dust and lint on the cooling fins and fans, added a little more cheap Ram and now plan to use it for a Media Center at the living room home theater system, after downloading all my music to it. Works for me. Big Storage left on this drive after putting about 600+ CD albums on it with pleanty of storage left for Movies or whatever.

I bought the 3TB version to replace the 1TB disk in my Apple Time Capsule. Installation and setup was a snap and it has been operating perfectly for about a month. It's very quiet, even though I wasn't particularly concerned noise since it resides in a closet. I was however concerned about the heat of operation since the Time Capsule is such a small casing. It runs as cool or cooler than the original drive even under heavy load.I can't really comment on the read/write speed of the drive because with my wireless backup arrangement the speed of the wireless connection is the limiting factor, not the hard drive. For that very reason, the WD Green drives seem like an ideal solution for a backup drive.
