This is a replacement drive for one that failed in my NAS and it works as advertised. I originally ordered 4 disk from another vendor and the UPS guy roughly handled the package and a week later one of the drives failed and this is the replacement. So far, all of the other disks and this one are working fine.

If anyone is having problems with this drive, and has been reading these reviews, he is no doubt aware of the problem with the 4KB blocks when using this with XP, and the two possible solutions of using jumpers or running an alignment tool. (If not, check out many 1 star reviews, many either describe the problem or else post links to discussions of the problem.)I went to WD's site to try to apply these problems, but found it rather tricky to track down details, so for the benefit of those doing the same:1. The jumpers need to go between pins 7 and 8. It is harder to find out than you would expect.2. As I wrote as a comment to another post, there is one problem trying to download the alignment tool:One thing to beware, the alignment tool is "Restricted download" on the WD site. It requires you to register your drive. Sounds like an annoyance? But no big deal? Well, one problem. My seller was selling a drive pulled from an external USB drive, so I did not qualify for the download based on my serial number, since it was not an internal drive. I found the tools later by searching for AcronisAlignTool, but it is worth noting that some of these drives may not have started life as internal drives and so wd support may or may not be available.Hope this helps users. As I had problems, I can't give it a 5 star review. On the other hand, that problem was, in aprt, because I bought an incompatible, or partly-compatible tools (and one that a less than scrupulous seller had ripped out of an external USB drive), so I am giving the drive 4 stars, so as not to drag down the review based on my own mistake and the bad behavior of a seller. I do dock it one star for not making clear the problem with the larger blocks (even on the WD site this is pretty deeply buried) and not printing a pin-out for the jumpers on the drive as was common practice for many companies (and even wd in the past). Such a pin diagram would have helped me realize block size was an issue much earlier and saved me much wasted time.

Price was good - comparable if not better than all the other biggies. Got to me in timely fashion. Shipped in absolutely perfect way and arrived in excellent condition. Sealed in original cushioned WD packing. Worked perfectly upon install. Amazon always comes through. Buy this - don't hesitate.I always go through the ratings found in NewEgg first, and if there are many negatives I do not buy. This one had good ratings by buyers. This is a purchase hint.

Today, it's only $120, making it kinda hard not to buy a second one! I just finished building my latest computer, and I'm using this drive for media storage, streaming to my Roku. It's perfectly adequate for that function although, at this speed, you probably don't want to be performing a lot of read and write functions at the same time. Due to its speed (or lack thereof,) I would not recommend this as a boot drive. (My boot drive is solid-state, only 128 GB, and screamingly fast by comparison.)I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (it's 64-bit), and that OS has no problem identifying this drive.Google "format new hard drive windows 7" - the first article in the list is pretty straightforward. Hope it's helpful.Great packaging and fast shipping on a solid product. I'm happy with my purchase.

I purchased this Hard Drive, WD Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD20EARX, to install in an old HP Media Center Computer that my wife gave up on after getting a troubling virus. Changed out the origional HD for this one after cleaning it up inside, from all the dust and lint on the cooling fins and fans, added a little more cheap Ram and now plan to use it for a Media Center at the living room home theater system, after downloading all my music to it. Works for me. Big Storage left on this drive after putting about 600+ CD albums on it with pleanty of storage left for Movies or whatever.

I was searching for a good HDD to add storage (movies, videos, music, photos, documents, etc.) to my study's desktop (Dell XPS Studio 9000, Intel Core i7 CPU, Window 7 Home Premium 64-bit) and decided to give this WD 3.5" Caviar Green 2TB SATA HDD a try.Likes:>Easy to install into computer using a SATA cable (not included).>I decided to use an external 3.5" USB 2.0 SATA Hard Drive Disk HDD Enclosure Case for ease of mobility and transferring files to/from other home computers. This WD HDD was plugged into the case and then connected via USB cable to the desktop; the HDD was instantly recognized>Relatively quiet external operation compared to the internal OEM ATA 7200rpm HDD.>Transfer speeds adequate for smooth streaming of movies and videos.>Relatively cool operation with the vented external HDD enclosure even after 2-3 hours of use. I do use a small external fan to cool off electronics during the summer if necessary.>Free download of "Acronis TrueImage WD Edition Software" on WD Support site for easy, complete cloning of existing systems on to this new WD HDD. I downloaded it and will use it when needed.>Technical support online and also via toll free phone 7 days a week.>Can be hot-swapped into the HD media player in the family room.Dislikes:>Transfer/access of files slower than the OEM 7200rpm HDD so I didn't use the TrueImage to clone the operating system.>Not recommended for Business Critical RAID Environments or heavy usage.>Long term durability and reliability questionable (date of manufacture: May 23, 2011).Bottom Line:Good, affordable, if slightly slower, versatile home internal or external(enclosure) 3.5" HDD that provides a whole lot of storage!

I bought the 3TB version to replace the 1TB disk in my Apple Time Capsule. Installation and setup was a snap and it has been operating perfectly for about a month. It's very quiet, even though I wasn't particularly concerned noise since it resides in a closet. I was however concerned about the heat of operation since the Time Capsule is such a small casing. It runs as cool or cooler than the original drive even under heavy load.I can't really comment on the read/write speed of the drive because with my wireless backup arrangement the speed of the wireless connection is the limiting factor, not the hard drive. For that very reason, the WD Green drives seem like an ideal solution for a backup drive.

I am very pleased with my 2TB WD internal drive. The product came ready to plug and play. I was able to go right to the western digital web site and get full comprehensive instructions on installing it. It was up and running in minutes at which time I promptly began to fill it. It has now been more than a few months since I installed it and I have had no problems with it. I have most of the space still available so I don't beleive that I have neerly pushed its limits.

Drive went bad within 6 months of a sale in early 2013. RMA thu Amazon expires very fast (Feb 15th 2013). Manufacturer is usually 2 years, no problem right? WRONG! The drive was already over two years old when sold. In fact ordering in Late 2012 the drive was a 2009 date. BUYER BEWARE. BAD BAD SALES.

These are great drives with one caveat you need to disable the every 8 second head parking as soon as possible or you'll likely be very sorry later when your drive dies prematurely trust me it already happened to me once. If you are using linux it is super super easy using idle3-tools. Western Digital has a download called wdidle3 but I didn't bother. I am using one of these as a boot drive and have experienced 0 problems. If compared to an SSD it would probably be a turtle but I noticed no real detectable difference in day to day operations compared to the higher rpm drive this replaced.

I bought this same drive maybe 3 weeks ago for $99.99 on a special deal. Now it's $2.25 cheaper. Boo, hiss, hiss. LOL. I originally was going to get this elsewhere but when I read on one of the deal sites that Amazon was matching the price I came here. Better packing. The other place just sticks the OEM drive in a box with some peanuts whereas Amazon double boxed the unit with air bag protection. The unit is a duplicate of another 2TB drive and I use them for all my media. I have a 1TB drive from WD Green that is over a year and works fine every time so i expect the same from this one. The drive is quiet and responsive so I'm happy. In a few months I plan on putting my C drive on a SSD for speed and keeping the 3 large drives for the rest. Amazon has been steadily dropping the prices so by Black Friday I hope to see a 240GB SSD for about $100. I'm glad that this company has been getting serious about computer hardware with some highly competitive pricing coupled with free shipping and top notch service.

I purchased this drive for uber archiving and it is perfect. Prior to the WD 3TB drive, I was running 7.5 TB of space encompassing 6 drives loaded with media and docs, as well as my system files, of course. That is a lot of room and I am using a bunch of it, but it didn't allow for a centralized backup scheme. Enter a 3 TB drive. I am able to archive all data, as well as images of my primary drive. I don't know and am not concerned with the transfer and seek times, so didn't even get into that when shopping. My main concerns were capacity, reliability, and price. 3 TB addresses the first concern and my excellent history with WD, the second. Add in Amazon's great price and I was on it. I would recommend this drive to anyone seeking massive storage at a great price. Oh yeah, and now at 10.5 TB, well lets just say it's like closet space....doesn't matter how much you have, you'll find a way to fill it.

Ok so I took, about 4 hours to install this, because basically my old Asus P6T Deluxe Motherboard had problems detecting it. It kept being detected as a RAID item (in BIOS), and I couldn't change it, no matter what. So then I switched the cable input, and then it suddenly appeared. The board appears to have some RAID specific connections that I didn't know about. Then in Windows, it wouldn't let me initialize the disk. After several hours of online searching, changing the BIOS storage type option to "AHCI" did the trick. (If you previously installed Windows 7 with the IDE storage type option in BIOS, then you have to do a registry trick before changing it to ACHI in the BIOS so it won't BSOD once you save the setting and restart to the OS). I finally could access and initialize the disk, the storage amount appears correctly. I'm going to be using this HDD to store my video projects, so I'll update if stuff occurrs. So far, despite the initial installation troubles, everything is looking dandy.
