Range: 4 starsI bought this router mostly because I was hoping to get better range than my Linksys E1500 router with an internal antenna. Unfortunately, the 5 dbi antennas don't improve the range in my environment by much. Your coverage may vary. Don't expect miracles. The range is going to be good for a small home or apartment. It might struggle in a larger mult-story home such as mine. In this routers defense, I've yet to find a low-priced router that will cover the distance in my home.**UPDATE** Wireless range has improved. Perhaps there was a lot of interference during my initial setup. I'm getting improved range in my bedroom and don't need the repeater. The connection speed is slower, but not so severe that I can't live with the slowdown.Setup: 4 starsPlug and play. It works and has security on by default.I immediately upgraded the firmware, which is always a good idea. The disk didn't work in my computer and some computers don't have disk drives anymore. Took me a second to figure out the default IP address to get to the router setup and settings. The default IP address of mine was set to 192.168.0.1.From there, it was easy to make changes to all the basic features. The quick-start guide is well-written, but I didn't use it because it was based on setup with the mini-CD that didn't work. It's not any harder to use the router settings to configure what you need.Features: 4 StarsDoesn't have a bunch of features, but it does have one feature that I thought might be helpful for my wireless range problem. That's WDS. I wouldn't normally expect such a mode on this cheap of a router, but I do expect it to work. For my purposes, it didn't work at all.I've tried to change the IP address of the router, but the router always stops responding and I have to reset it. This proved to be a challenge when I tried to set this router up using the WDS mode because the primary router has an address of 192.168.1.1. WDS was a breeze to setup otherwise, but it didn't work. Could have something to do with the router having a different chipset than my linksys router, I don't know. Might be better if you have two TP-link routers.I'm still giving this router 4 stars for features, because it may work for others. For the price of this router, I wouldn't expect WDS. I was also hoping to install DD-WRT to gain more features, but this router isn't supported (yet) if it's version 8.x like mine.Reliability: 4 StarsI decided to roll with the TP-Link as my primary router and I will use the linksys as a repeater. I haven't had any issues yet. I will give the router the benefit of the doubt and give it 4 stars. Since it's not much than the linksys that I purchased for the same price and can't return, I am not positive I'll keep it unless I can improve the range by messing with the antennas.Overall: 4 stars for this router. Rounding up to 4 because the build quality seems to be good. It will probably work for the majority of people and it's super cheap. Here is my 3-star review of the Linksys router which I do not recommend over this TP-Link unless you want DD-WRT. Even if you want DD-WRT support, there are better options. http://www.amazon.com/review/R2BWUA9KMXRC6M/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

With the multitude of reviews here, the main reason I'm adding my voice is point out two things that might interest or help others (the second of which probably isn't specific to the TP-Link).(1) Password oddity: For wireless security, I created an SSID and then chose WPA2-PSK / AES security and created a 22-character password. But after doing this and trying to connect, Windows XP's "acquiring network address" message just kept appearing continuously, and the computer never connected. Tried my other notebook, same result. After trying a couple of different things, I thought, "I know this is a shot in the dark, but let's try a shorter password." So I tried an 8 character password and was surprised when it did in fact connect seamlessly then. Just to double-check that password-length was really the issue, I went back to a 22-word password and again it stuck at "acquiring network address." Tried a 20-character, stuck again. Then tried a 17-character, and it connected fine. I kept that, since I prefer long passwords for security. So that was weird enough. But *after* going through that exercise I noticed that it says right below the password field that the password must be between 8 and 63 characters. Huh?? I'm glad I hadn't noticed that before, otherwise I might not have even tried shortening the password, which I already considered a long-shot. Wonder if this quirk could be unique to my unit, since I haven't seen it mentioned in reviews?EDIT: Just updated to the latest firmware and the odd password-length oddity I described went away. (Be sure to follow the TP-Link website's instructions on how to identify your version and select the right firmware!)(2) Using simultaneously with a computer that has only a 802.11g wireless card: I've seen many people insist that having any G device on the network will slow down the throughput/speed on N devices. Some even say it will reduce the N devices to G speed. While others say there will be little if any effect. Well, I was happy to find that the "little or no effect" people are right. After getting my N-enabled computer on wireless at about 50-60 mbps download (Comcast Performance, which advertises 50mbps in my area -- measured by Speedtest-dot-net at about fifteen unobstructed feet from the TP-Link), I fired up my G-only computer and started streaming a movie. Result: Little, if any, affect on the N-computer's speed :).To test the effect of distance and obstructions, I took my N-enabled computer about 30 feet away, though 2 walls, and the speed went down roughly 15%. While that doesn't sound great to me, it doesn't sound bad either, and it's still more than twice as fast as I was getting before I set up my N network today. And I don't really have any benchmarks to compare to (other N routers)...plus, AFAIK that could possibly be a factor of my notebook's wireless card and internal antennae as well.Overall I'm a happy camper, especially given the price point. Caveat: This is based on less than 24 hours of use.

*****Skip to the end to get the cliff notes******I wanted a basic wifi router so that I can connect my new-ish laptop to the Internet without having to tell my desktop to use it's adapter...which either my adapter or the laptop or both didn't like...and my media player DEFIANTLY doesn't like my adapter because no matter how hard I tried it wouldn't connect BUT the adapter could instantly connect to the player...UGH.Sorry...anyways in searching for an router I had requirements: wifi equipped, ease of install, compatible with Windows Vista & 7, as high speed as possible, and preferably 11N or N style network. This thing fit the bill PERFECTLY. Leading up to actually getting the device I looked around Windows and Amazon for how it set up and to see if there was possibly any problems coming along such as with the setup or connection drops or whatever. The reviews before some had problems...others didn't...but that's the nature of devices and reviews so I just went ahead and got it anyway but the main thing that scared me was the whole setup process. Windows Help REALLY makes it seem like it's going to end your technological world if you screw up but honestly...IT WAS A SNAP!The ONE thing that got me...which had nothing to do with my computer or the router, it had to do with me and my Internet modem, provided by my ISP AT&T. I knew I had to change the settings on the modem to allow a router...and I followed it perfectly and it worked. The one thing that I didn't know...nor did AT&T or the router maker tell me...is that when I set it to "router" mode, one of the 5 lights on the modem...the Internet LED...will no longer be on. Which when it first happened I thought I screwed up and went back and reset everything, the modem and the router. But when I first set the whole thing up, the light wasn't on and I was getting redirected to a AT&T webpage because it was telling me that "somethings wrong" but no matter what it did it couldn't fix it.Turns out....ha, ha...I typed my network password in wrong so it wasn't allowing me to get on the Internet and AT&T's webpage didn't know what had happened and the router didn't either. So upon a second attempt to set it all up, it worked fine...and is still working fine. The actual setup...ignoring my debacle...was no more than 30min all together. Since my computer has plenty of wires and it's in a cramped space it took a bit longer to make the wires work out...as not to tangle them...and make it where I won't rips the cables out of everything the next time I have to reach behind my computer. And my two devices, my laptop and media player,...BOOM...found the network, connected, and it's the perferred network for them. In fact the media player plays youtube videos better than when I was connected to my desktop directly. The advanced settings are very simple and easy to find and if that's not enough, they have a very detailed sidebar everywhere you go as to explain to you what does what.Since I only sometimes leave my devices on to download something or to maintain itself, I don't need the network on all the time and the quick on and off button on the outside is very useful for that, it starts back up VERY quickly. One thing I wish could be an on/off button is the wifi, so I didn't want it transmitting when I don't need it. The only way to turn wifi off is by going into the advanced settings and turning it off, but doing that then that means the thing has to restart. Which again it restarts very quickly but still, it would've been a nice addition to it.So cliff notes:VERY BLOODY EASY to set up, less than 30mins for a novice like me.No problems so far, will update if stuff comes up.Very fast, my devices run off it like they were made together. You don't really need to change anything, the default on everything is fine.On/off switch for when you don't need/want it on when not in use.

This review is going to be a bit different from other reviews, in that I'm going to tell you what went horribly wrong with my Cox Communications phone, internet & cable hook-ups first. In September 2011, Cox hooked up cable, phone & internet service. From day 1, there were connectivity problems. I would lose the wireless signal on my 2 Vizio internet connected TV's, lose wired & wireless on the computer and even lose my Cox phone connection. (Never had a connectivity problem with AT&T, since the house was built 8 years ago) Download speeds with Cox would run from 0 to 13,000 kb/s. The router Cox installed was Netgear WNR2000. They sent out 10 techs to fix the problem on 8 different occasions. They replaced the underground line from the pole to the house 2 separate times in 6 months. They installed 2 modulators. They changed settings. They sent senior techs out. Everything you can think of, was done. I kept telling them I believed it to be the router, but they did not. I lost the connection hundreds of times. The router checked out and the modem would check out for them. In addition to the 2 internet connected TV's, I was running Windows 7 on my computer. When I called up my Netflix service to find out what download speeds they were reading from my TV's, they said it showed that I was NOT getting any signal & that I didn't even had an internet connection. I was watching Netflix on one of the TV's at the time. Netflix said they'd never seen where no connection was showing and I was still receiving their signal.Talking to the Netgear techs about their router proved pointless. They are useless and know very little about their routers. Vizio TV techs agreed with me, that they thought the router couldn't handle the newer technologies. Finally, I saw on the Microsoft site that some Windows 7 computers and newer technology devices CAN have problems with older routers. Cox said they'd come out again and bring a new router. The tech came out and did NOT replace the router. If you started tinkering with the router and modem, reset them and reset all the TV settings (which by now, I'd memorized) then it would start working again. But, a few hours later, no connection again. It became tedious to keep having Cox come out, because most of the techs caused another problem when they came out and made things worse. (disconnected neighbors cable, installed a faulty splice etc.)I worked 15 years as an avionics tech, so I just finally dismissed everything the Cox techs were telling me (they all claimed it was different problems) I went with what I really believed to be the problem and purchased the TP-Link TL-WR841ND 300Mbps Wireless N Router. In 5 minutes I had it set up and running. The computer was quick to set up and one of the TV's. The other TV took some time, but that was the TV, not the router causing the problem. Not only has everything worked flawlessly, but it has increased my computer speeds and the download speeds on the 2 internet connected TV's. Plus, I'm not getting those annoying rebuffering hang ups, when I'm streaming videos. HAPPY-HAPPY-CAMPEROne final note (and I know some people will disagree on this) if your modem has a battery backup, remove it for about 30 seconds when you reboot the modem. Put it back in and plug everything back.*****9/18/2012I'm doing an update, because I've had this model for a few months now & NO PROBLEMS!!!

I was really excited about this router given all good stuff I heard about it. I tried it for a month but still did not perform as well as I would like to.Let me share my concerns about this product:1) Mac users: beware that performance with MacBooks may be an issue sometimes. It took me a little while in contact with tech support in order to figure out that a specific configuration called "WMM" which may need to be disabled using the router's admin page. Still performance on my MacBook Air is not as good as performance on a Windows 7 laptop (testing both at the same distance to the router).2) My router came with a really old firmware version. I tried to verify this at first but even for me as a software engineer (used to all tech stuff) it was hard to figure out which version in the website was the right one for my router. The directions given in their website are not exactly accurate when you look up information on your router. I sent my router's version info (firmware and hardware) to tech support and got a link to the right version but I wish this kind of things would be easily detected from the router, etc, or better instructions would be posted in their website on in the user's manual.3) If you live in an apartment which may be facing another building, is likely that you will have lots of wifi networks setup in your area so watch out for which channel you may pick. After I played with this setting a bit I got some improvement.4) About the antennas... tried to find information on which position they may perform better but had no luck on that. This one I'm not sure if matter or not. This router is definitely better than my previous one from MediaLink but still is far from what I would like to have. My internet speed is up to 20Mbps so I was expecting to have a pretty decent experience with this router.Sometimes I just turn the wifi off on my smartphone and use the 4G LTE connection to look up something fast.*******************EDITED*****************Still having problems to keep up a good and reasonable wireless speed. Tried setting specific channels or auto-channel but it is still performing below of what I expected. Right now I just tested my wired speed download connection at speedtest.net and it was about 32 Mbps but as soon as I switch to wireless it came down to 8Mbps on auto channel. It was worse than this on channel 1 or 11.

This is my 2nd TP-Link wireless router and they are very solid products for the money, and I think they need to be judged with their price range taken into account. This seems like a fairly delicate case, and I mention that because the other one I have is a less-expensive "squared off corner" type that actually feels sturdier. Having said that, it shouldn't matter for normal use. But it's the most fragile-seeming router I've dealt with. The web interface seems laid out well enough, but then I'm used to the one from my earlier TP-Link whose web interface is very similar.I have two very minor negatives, neither one enough to reduce the 5 stars at this price range.1) If you are going to upgrade your firmware (which you'll probably need to do and should as I got mine in Jan of '13 and it had the old firmware, which can result in freezes and dropping devices), do the upgrade before you configure it. Or if you don't, take their advice and back up the configuration to a file on your computer. The manual suggests that there's an off chance you'll lose your config when you upgrade the firmware but it's a bit like saying there's an off chance you'll still be paying taxes next year. That's what happens: you lose your config.2) I bought this router to use as an Access Point. My main wireless router doesn't reach to one place where I need it, and I have wired ethernet in that location. But I needed wifi in that second location, and an AP is ideal for that. However, because AP's are purchased less, they tend to cost more for less functionality. I wanted to get a router and just configure it to act as an AP on the same network. (I didn't want to create a separate network.) It works fine on this model, and does exactly what I want, but because there's no way to tell it that it's acting purely as an AP and not a router, there are several places where it wants to warn you about the lack of a WAN connection. This is no big deal, but most routers these days just have a setting that lets you just tell it that.Would I buy another one at this price (I paid $30)? YOu bet. Would I pay $50 for it? Maybe, but I'm not sure.
