I just purchased 4 of these to add to a raid. One has failed before completing the reshape/resync process. I have 11 (well, 10 working, one dead) in a Linux Raid6. Given the reliability experiance, I guess it's a good thing I chose the Level 6 instead of the level 5.I have a total of 12 of these drives from different times. I got 7 in late 2009, and one failed after about 8000 hrs. The controller locked up and wouldn't respond. I replaced it and just attempt to add 4 more. One failed at 75 hours, with smart errors logged indicating unrecoverable read errors, and sector reallocation also failed. THere are six UNC errors in the smart log within the same hour, and the linux system log shows a period of about 12 hours after the first failure where the driver is attempting to reset the controller and the link, and finds the drive still fails a read request. Finally, the Raid booted it out - this was no short term attempt to correct the error - it took around 12 hours. The firmwares are all in the CC1 series, with the latest having CC1H. That is not supposed to be the firmware that causes the Raid problems.FYI, the drives are set with a 30 minute idle time to power down. When I'm not home, the drives all spin down, but the long timeout means that they only cycle a couple of times a day. So the usage is just about what Seagate recommends for these drives. For over twice the money, the XT series is available, but that gets pricey. So I'm exchanging it with Amazon. They have a great replacement policy! Thanks, Amazon.

These drives have a very high failure rate. I built a server for work using 45 of these in a single 4U server with plenty of cooling and i have already had 6 of them fail in the last year. If i didnt already have 45 of these, i would go with a different model drive!

I had 3 of these disks on a Windows 7 System setup in a Dynamic Spanned configuration before I started to have problems. I wasn't running anything to watch the disk because I didn't realize they would start failing so quickly. 2 of the 3 disks run very hot, 40-48C moving them around doesn't change this. My WD 1.5 tb disks run around 30C in the same locations. One SG disk had 422 relocated blocks at this point. My disk monitor is predicting this disk will die in 60 hours but Windows 7 just lists it as healthy. The volume has gone offline on me twice and it took me a while to figure out which disk was failing since I couldn't get much information from Windows 7. In fact it looked like one of the other ones was failing from what I could see so get some sort of disk monitor, even if it's just a freebee anything will save you a lot of time and trouble. It took me over 14 hours to run a chkdsk on the volume under Windows 7 and the first time it died and took the volume offline. With Spinrite(level 2) I could run the disks one at a time in about 4 hours and it told me everything about the drives. All 3 SG disks produce millions of ECC errors when I check them with Spinrite 6. None of my WD 1.5 tb disks produce more then a few hundred ECC errors under the same tests. All 3 of these SG disks produce a lot of seek errors and reformatting them doesn't seem to lower anything. Until I put up some disk monitor software I wasn't aware of the large differences between the SG an WD disks. I'm using all of mine for media storage and I don't care that much about speed, but the SG disks are faster then the WD(Green) disks I am using. I had picked the SG's because I got a deal, but it looks like maybe I didn't. The SG's have had a lot of problems and the ones I have are -202's which are suppose to have all the problems solved. I thought I had tested all of these disks well enough before I put them into service as they were not showing any problems until about a week ago, of course by then they had been in my media server for 3 weeks. There doesn't seem to be anyway to remove a disk from a dynamic volume set so I suggest you use at least Raid5 if your going to use these disks. I don't mind loosing my data as I have it all backed up but it's a pain to have to restore 3.5 tb's no matter how you look at it. I had planned on getting 8 of these but I think I will stop at 3 and move to as none of my WD's have given me any problems and the disks seem to work fine even mixed with the working SG.

My fiance got a new computer, and before it came I backed everything from her old computer onto my 1TB hard drive that I was using as an external solution temporarily. I bought the drive for 40 dollars and should have used something more reliable apparently. When the new computer came, I plugged in the hard drive only to find that one of the heads had failed and that I would be unable to retrieve anything from the drive, including all of my fiance's data (the other computer was reformatted and returned).Avoid this one if you enjoy being in relationships. It's been two weeks and she still won't talk to me. For $40, it was a good investment, but I wouldn't put any faith in it. All estimates for data recovery have been upwards of $1,500.

Checking online I see it is a common occurrence. I'm getting it replaced but will demand a different manufacture. Staying away from Seagate now.

When I first got this and installed it in my PC case, it made sounds like someone inside was on a typewriter. This started after I got Windows installed -- probably about 20 minutes into the life of the HDD. I interpreted this as the dreaded "click of death" I've read about but thankfully have never experienced. I got an RMA, took it out the of the PC case and to the post office to figure out the cheapest way to return ship it. When I got it back home I realized I hadn't erased it so I quickly hooked it up to another PC to wipe it, just leaving it to lie outside the case. Surprisingly, it was silent. I ran SeaTools and HD Tune Pro on the drive and didn't get any errors. The drive came back perfect. So, I am now thinking what I thought was a bad HDD was probably just the mounting in the case somehow? Anyway, it seems to be fine now. I don't trust it to be an OS drive so I'll probably put it in an enclosure to be used as a media backup drive.I can't say I've ever had this experience with a HDD. I don't really know what to make of it.-- UPDATE 5/26/2011 --This drive is still going strong in another case as a back-up drive. I have had no errors or problems with it. I've since tried other hard drives in the enclosure this drive was in and those drives do not make the same noises. It's still a mystery why this particular drive rattled/vibrated in that case while others do not.

It would take a few pages for me to tell you how bad my experience was and exactly why.. I will never buy Seagate again because if something does go wrong they don't want to help even after they say they will they just tried to jerk me around until I give up, and i didnt but it did cost me four months of not having a backup hard drive when i needed one and hours on the phone with them... Absolutely Terrible Service!!!

This drive is quite fast (SATA II). I have had good luck with Seagate drives though this one is being used to replace another Seagate drive (only 18 moths old). The old drive did not actually fail... it just got warnings on two different hard drive tests. I think that the old drive may have been the victim of excessive heat. The problem might have been related to the old hard drive not getting a full format by the PC manufacturer (the drive came with a custom built PC). I always do a full format on new drives, thus the fact that this new drive had never been formatted (part of "bare") was not a problem.Have only had the new Seagate 1.5 TB drive for a few weeks but have had no problems with speed or data loss. It has required no maintenance, including defragmenting, and I use the drive for video work (tough on fragmentation); full size/length videos, not just internet publications.I would recommend this drive at this point... will update after I have been using this hard drive for awhile.

When the hard drive stopped working in my parents' Dell XPS 420, I wanted to find a relatively low-cost replacement to get them back up and running. This Seagate Barracuda was an upgrade in pretty much every way (320gb to 500gb, 5400rpm to 7200rpm). Thanks to the way Dell has set up their cases (a great improvement over previous-generation Dells, which were almost inaccessible), it was a breeze to get this baby in and up and running. I had the hard drive in the case and ready to install Windows in just a few minutes. The hard drive is relatively quiet (though not completely silent), and it has plenty of space for anything my parents need to use it for. It's only been in use for a few weeks, so I can't comment on the longevity of this product, but from all appearances it should hold up fine. I've purchased Seagate products in the past with no problems. If you're in the market for a replacement hard drive, for the price you'd be foolish not to consider the Seagate Barracuda line.

I own several Seagate drives, from 7200.9 through the latest 7200.12, in 40GB to 1TB sizes (the 7200.12 is 1TB). I recently swapped out one of my HTPC 160GB drives for the 1TB Barracuda (just for capacity, not because it failed). The drive is dedicated to my HTPC's DVR/PVR app (SnapStream's BeyondTV) which I use on a daily basis. Why am I telling you all this? Because my HTPC records and plays multiple (and often simultaneous) high-definition feeds (yep, all the way up to 1080i) onto or from this 1TB Barracuda, and it has never failed (nor, for that matter, have any of my previous Seagate drives used for the same purpose). So it's fast enough to keep up with 3 simultaneous HD streams (2 recording, 1 playback), and super quiet. Well I do hear it spin up from dormant mode, but after that I can't hear it (the motherboard fan in my chassis is louder! I temporarily shut down the fan and couldn't hear the 1TB drive!).The drive has been running day in day out for about 3 months now, and based on this and my experience with the other drives, it seems it's got a long ways to go!

Received the all four disks within 5 days using the no cost shipping, very nice. Plugged 4 drives into my TR8M Sans Digtal storage, intialized as as GPT (GUID) type via windows disk manager. Created parity raid 5 partition via San Digital and got a single 4 terabyte partion using windows disk manager to format. No problem with about 4 minutes taken between install and quick format to complete. Windows Vista 32 bits running AHCI, Intel q9450, 2 gigs memory, Gigabye x48-DQ6 with San Digital TR8M eSata external storage.I did read about others having problems with same drive with previous BIOS level. My disks were all the latest version of disk firmware (CC1H) and have no problems using my San Digital RAID 5 setup. I have already loaded up about 2 terabytes of the 4 terabytes available (1 drive for parity) using raid 5 with no problems. Drives just as fast as my older and smaller 7200 RPM drives from seagate in RAID mode. To date the drives are problem free, noiseless and very engery efficient during operation and boot. I monitor the San Digial storage via KillaWatt. No spikes at boot and very low watts (about 20-30 watts) per hour for the 8 drive San Digital box with 4 of 8 drives being the newer 1.5 terabyes type.

I bought this HDD when it was on sale for $45 so it was definitely worth the money. However, even at $66 (what it's going for at the time I'm writing this) I would still recommend buying this drive.I read these reviews before purchasing, so the very first thing I did after I installed the drive was update the firmware. It was a relatively painless process that took only a few minutes and worked great. Just make sure you follow the directions that are posted on the Seagate website. I have another Seagate hard drive installed on the same computer before buying this one, and thought that maybe it would cause problems with the firmware upgrade because it automatically detects your Seagate hard drive and does it all automatically. I didn't want the wrong hard drive to get the upgrade if it wasn't compatible, or ignore the new hard drive, etc.. but there were no problems. It detects which hard drive(s) is/are compatible and upgrades the firmware accordingly.I have had absolutely no problems with this drive since I've had it and considering how easy upgrading the firmware was, I've given this product a five star review. It's pretty fast, very quiet, and has plenty of space. Now only if the SSD's were this affordable...

This device freed up my computer to run faster. I moved all my windows folders to this data drive and in the process emptied about 1/2 the space on the C: drive. This has resulted in much faster performance on my primary drive. This drive holds a lot of data and can be a good backup to your primary drive. Simply backup windows to this drive and if your primary crashes then you can restore the backup. It installed quickly but took almost 4 hours to do a full format on the drive. It is not a fast access drive but is great for saving pictures, documents, and videos. I have also put most of my games on this drive also. When asked where to install the game you simply change the C: in the path to whatever letter is being used for this drive. In my case "C:/program files/GameX/" becomes "E:/program files/GameX/". If your system has the proper amount of RAM then this process will start the games a little slower, but improve overall PC performance.

Received drive and allowed to warm up indoors for 7 hours before installing...realized I have no SATA power connectors on my ancient powersupply...however I have another burnt out supply lying around. Soldering gun and electrical tape fixed that problem.Drive booted normally. No problems after installing windows and 40GB of games. Have no clue about firmware updates, planning on checking that out soon. I will update this review then.Update: My drive came with CC46 firmware installed which is the newest version.About the packaging: Yes, it was awful. Same padding on top, just 2 layers of cardboard between bottom of drive and the ground. The antistatic bag didn't look creased in any of the contact locations so I am going for the glass half full "UPS didn't bang my package around", even if it comes back to bite me.Replaced an ATA133 80 GB 5400RPM. Faster, quieter, cooler. A+++ if reliability holds out.Update 2/27/11 - Still working great after almost 3 weeks of being left on continuously. If it was going to die....it probably would have. I got a good one :D

1TB and 7200 rpm with a 32mb cache was the specs i was looking for. it came down to this and hitachi but i chose this because it was such a great deal on Amazon. older reviews are becoming less and less relevant because of firmware updates and i like how Amazon ships OEM bare drives. it comes in a bigger and longer box that is filled with "air paks" and under all the packaging there is a smaller box where you drive in securely located.go with amazon they do their very best for customer satisfaction. their email response is quick and will do what u want. THEY give u a $5 credit offer for future purchases.I've heard about the bad packaging but i decided to go ahead and try it out myself so i ordered this hard drive and i dont know if im just lucky or if amazon is really paying attention to their packaging because i recieved it yesterday and it was nicely packaged inside a Western Digital box kind of weird considering the HD is by Seagate but anyhow it was tightly secured in the middle of the box with 2 black plastics so it wouldnt bounce around. I bought this for my desktop because my old HD died so i inserted it and installed Windows 7 and its been working perfectly fine. I will try to keep you guys updated on how this HD works out in the future.

Pros: Single platter. Indeed quite fast. HD Tach showed 117.6 MB/s average read on one unit, 112.3 MB/s on the other. That's within 3% to 7% of my Spinpoint F3s. Also relatively low vibration, much lower than my F3s. And low seek noise, which I admit does not bother me in general.Cons: Relatively small 8MB cache. Constant high-pitched acoustic whine, noticeable several feet away. Reminds me of what 7,200 RPM HDs sounded like before fluid bearing motors, though not that loud. By comparison, my Spinpoint F3s spin virtually silently, as does my older single-platter Seagate 7200.10, which is still a great drive. You have to put your ear up to them to detect the sound of the platter spinning.Other Thoughts: So, once again, the annoying reality of HD noise: there's acoustic noise and vibration noise, which is potentially much worse, because it can turn your case into a sound (noise) system. My Spinpoint F3s are acoustically silent, but they produce so much vibration and audible case resonance that I have had to place them on low-density foam to isolate it. (Foam weather stripping works nicely.) This is not necessary with these Seagate 7200.12s, in my opinion; loose screws due just fine. However, I don't know yet how to reduce the high-pitched acoustic whine without blocking air flow to the drive. Might just have to live with it, which annoys me a bit. Though not enough to outweigh my generally favorable impression of the drive.

It was time to replace the 500MB Western Digital drive in my desktop, so I decided to try this Seagate 1TB drive. It took nearly 2 hours to format in Windows to NTFS, but I've heard that's typical for Windows and it now runs fast and quiet (so far). Some older Seagate drives have known firmware issues, so Seagate's website allows you to enter the drive's serial number to confirm the firmware and get a firmware bios-flash update if needed. The drive I received was new enough not to need any upgrade. I've only given it 4 stars for reliability due to the fact that I've only used it for a month as of this post. There was no SATA cable or installation CD and the packaging was sparse, but I've ordered "bulk" drives from Amazon before so I knew what to expect and I'm not complaining about it. Its 32MB of cache helps a lot for gaming, watching videos and booting/closing quickly the OS.For its performance, capacity, quality and acceptable price, worth the money. Recommended.

Please ignore the all the bad reviews sighting bad firmware; they fixed all the issues. The packaging is another issue though. My drive seems fine after stress tests and benchmarking/heath probes/tests, so I guess there was no issue with the drive being damaged because of the packaging for me. Just make sure you update your firmware if it isn't already. My drive came with the latest and greatest! The only problem that you could have with this drive is the amount of noise it can make sometimes. This is rare but seems to make an unusual amount of noise when doing a lot of simultaneous reads on different files, but by the same token, I can't even hear it through my case when the drive is maxed out read/write so idk. I shopped around for the cheapest drive and found this one at about [...] tax and shipping free so I jumped. I only wish it had a 64BM cache like some. I would advise against buying a 10000 RMP drive as they are so over priced always. The 1TB size was a perfect complement to my existing 1TB and fits about 837 of my finest movies at standard quality.

I believe computers are tools. I want the best hardware and software for the lowest price--it doesn't have to be at the bleeding edge. I also build systems for myself and close friends, non-gamers. I have owned just about every make and model of hard drive there is, including a number of Seagates back to the late 1980's. They have always performed well for me--and this one is doing just fine so far, but It's only been running a few months, and quietly, thank you Seagate. How it will do 1-2-3-4-5 years from now, who knows?I was a bit concerned about this drive because the packaging from Amazon was poor--just a few inflated baggies in the box for cushioning and the drive rattled around a lot in the outer box. Amazon should oversee their shipping partners more closely. Returning a DOA drive is a hassle. Should I receive one from any merchant, I would think more than twice about doing business with them again.

After I used it for a week, it crashed. It's code was not one of the firmware codes that needed updating. I lost the receipt so my own fault for not returning or RMAing. It may have overheated cause I got it to work for a while by separating it from the drives in the cage more and putting an external fan on it. That and I'm seeing problems with that SATA port. Not to be too ambiguous, but I don't trust SATA as much as I used to.So possible causes:1) controller bad on the motherboard for that SATA port (seems unlikely, but one of the PS/2 ports went out)2) SATA header for that port is bad. I tried the drive on a different port, but it may have been too late.3) SATA 1/5 with SATA II drive? Not really compatible?4) Seagate sucks (possible)5) Drives too close in the cage, improper airflow, open case. (Heat damage)So now I'm building a new PC with proper design, proper airflow, proper static precautions (no more popping drives out of the bag and handling without a wrist strap), hiqh quality motherboards, best cables I can find. That and buying only 1.2M MTBF drives from WD. No more data loss! Eventually RAID 1 and hot-swapping. I got a UPS too to clean the power in case that is a problem, and my new PC has well-spaced drives, 2 120mm high CFM fans, 5 hd 80mm fans in the middle bulkhead.I don't trust SATA.

I received a drive with the CC1H firmware and it is totally awesome, no failures whatsoever, no streaming issues, no lockups - no failure to detect the drive, etc... btw I use windows only, no Mac or linux etc, and have not used this drive in a Raid setup. My plan was to exchange the drive I received which had the SD17 firmware that I updated to SD1A. I still had problems with streaming video and video playback in general - read my review earlier for more details. I say WAS going to exchange. Since receiving the new drive I checked one last time on the Seagate website for firmware and found they now have SD1B firmware for my original drive. After flashing the firmware - which went very smoothly and did not destroy any existing data - it seems to work at or very near the same level as my other drive with the CC1H firmware. The drive is incredibly fast in tests with HD Tune software - my max read speed with either drive is always over 102 Mb/s and that is better than my Raid 0 setup that gets 70 Mb/s or better for maximum sustained read speed - and that is with 2 250gb Seagate drives, which performs very nicely for a moderate desktop system. I'd like to try it in a Raid 0 but I think I'll just keep the 2nd drive as a spare. I decided to just keep the 1st drive and the 5 year warranty Seagate offered until early this year. Seems to be a solid drive now after the update - it does get warm so I recommend a ventilated enclosure with a fan for sure with these to get maximum life.(OLD REVIEW) I have had this drive for a few weeks, and I called Seagate when I first got the drive because I read about the firmware problem. Well, they told me I had the SD17 firmware and that was one of the drives that may need to be updated, but they wouldn't give me the download unless I experienced problems. Well after trying to use the drive, I couldn't even boot on my Asus a8v motherboard, tried different jumper settings and nothing would help, so connected it to another pc and it was detected with that one. Instead of waiting for another 1/2 hour for Seagate tech support I ended up downloading the firmware posted on that Eggy site and did a firmware update using a usb flash drive. The update was successful and I thought that would be end of story. Well, it still wouldn't be detected with the Asus motherboard (Via 83837 SATA chipset - sata I) so, I figured it wasn't compatible with the chipset even though other sata II drives worked fine. I decided to use a external usb/eSata enclosure with the drive, I copied about 900 gb of data onto it - music/mpeg files etc and things seemed to work ok, but the transfer speed (read / write speed) was much slower than it would have been with the sata connection. Anyways, using this drive for a media center pc / dvr became a nightmare - it would stop / freeze about 20 minutes into the movie. It stops and then is not detected by the pc. I could sometimes go to standby then come back and it would work again, other times, I have to shut down completely and reboot. It is almost impossible to watch anything straight through on this. I have tried disabling the write cache (in device manager - drives - optimize for quick removal / or for performance) and either way it has problems. I am sending back for replacement and I hope I get a better drive - I used to trust Seagate and for the past 5 years have been very pleased with them until this drive.

Pros:Fast, roomy, quiet, and cheap. Quiet compared to other similar hard drives.Cons:Scared of all hard drives made in the last two years as many have had problems. This is not just a Seagate problem, but all hard drive manufacturers. This is a great hard drive that I use for my image backups on my main computer. It's quiet and remains cool compared to other hard drives I have used. I have used several of this specific model of hard drive and have never had any troubles, but others have. But all hard drive manufacturers have been having problems, usually solved by firmware, where the hard drive bricks in a short period of time. It's not Seagate specific. I'd recommend this drive, but I'd also recommend that a buyer test it out with some heavy duty file copies to and from this drive and a check using a utility like HDTune or CrystalDiskInfo or another hard drive utility.

Unfortunately the HDD I received was damaged.I tried SEATOOLS and DiskWizard from Seagate's website but they (and Windows) do not detect any disk (my PC BIOS does not detect any HDD either)... It just makes a clicking sound known as the "Click of Death"... it denotes a physical damage and these sounds can be caused by a malfunctioning spindle, Read Write head or loose components.I have another Barracuda 500GB drive which has been working great for over 2 years... I believe it is a matter of luck. However I am glad that Amazon refunded my money. I will probably buy another one but I might do it from a local store, I do not want to wait for another drive that might arrive damaged...

This drive failed within 12 days of purchasing it (grinding click of death). Just prior to biting the dust it passed the entire suite of SeaTools diagnostics with flying colors! I sent in for a replacement and it was DOA out of the box. A SECOND replacement lasted a whole 26 days before grinding to a pitiful end. After that I gave up and got a refund -- less restocking fee. The two Western Digital 1TB drives I got instead have thus far been trouble free (going on six months now). This is a cheap drive in every sense of the word. It is less than useless, since you cannot trust even a working model with your data; it has a high failure rate. If you own one of these and it is still working, I would suggest backing everything up to a reliable drive and tossing it. That's better than losing 1.5TB worth of data! If someone were to GIVE me a new one of these drives I would recycle it. I wouldn't even try to resell it on eBay since I value my feedback too much.Seagate's large capacity consumer drives have gone downhill. I would only consider buying their enterprise-level HDDs at this point (which I cannot afford anyway) since they are tested thoroughly and are not cheaply designed/manufactured. Avoid this model in particular! If you read all the horror stories about this drive and buy it anyway (like I did), then you've no one to blame.I frankly don't know what Seagate could do to get me to buy their drives again. Once you lose trust in a storage device, what is it worth? Perhaps if I hear nothing but rave reviews about their drives for a few consecutive years, I MIGHT consider the possibility of thinking about imagining a scenario in which I could theoretically contemplate the potential of evaluating the prospects of a hypothetical purchase... maybe.

If you have Windows XP, you might have to go into your BIOS and turn on whichever SATA port you plugged the new drive into. Then, you need to format the new drive. The Seagate website has the info in two different places in their FAQ and the instructions are more complete in one place than the other. Once I got through that, this drive works great on my XP system.

I bought four of these about 15 months ago here at Amazon. One arrived dead, and Amazon quickly replaced it. I agree with the packaging comments - our bumpy long mountain road is enough to destroy anything that isn't packaged well - but I didn't do an autopsy on the returned item.I'm using these in a Readynas Duo, a terrific little item that we use for backups and as a home server. Two in the Duo, one swapped out intermittently for off-site storage of our data. About three weeks ago, the second one started going bad (The Nas immediately reports disk flaws). So I'm faced with buying another one or switching brands, no decision yet. Sorry to see the bad reports, and I'm not really sure how long disks are supposed to last anyway. I'd like a little longer life than 1 year, that's for sure.

In August 2010, my Dell Studio XPS 9100 arrived with two Western Digital drives in a RAID1 configuration. Within several days, they failed; one of the drives became corrupted beyond repair. Dell sent me two idential Western Digital drives as replacements, and customer service directed me through the installation process. By November, these drives failed in the same way. Dell customer service recommended that I use Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drives instead and sent me two as replacements. They have worked very well so far. Very fast, but the two drives in tandem can be heard. Not loud enough to be a nuisance but they are there.Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST31000528AS-Bare Drive

The only thing I absolutely need in a hard drive is a low probability of failure.Unfortunately, this drive worked perfectly for 1 week. The bad news is I had to return it. The good news is I didn't have it for long enough to have saved anything personal on it. I only had time to partition, load an OS, and go thru windows update 15 times and also load a few applications. After getting most of the system running well, the drive stopped being picked up in the BIOS (uh oh). I swapped cables between a working drive and this one and no luck. Took the drive out and listened as the PC booted up and heard the dreaded clicking sound. Total failure within 1 week... not a disaster but pretty frustrating still.Today I teturned it and bought a Western Digital with similar specs (for about $10 more). I know that Seagate is a reputable company but this has kind of made me too nervous to try again right away.Back up all your data - two places at one time is minimum... think about it.

I have purchased 2 of these drives based upon very good service I have received with it's predecessor, the ST3500410AS which was super reliable, super fast and super quiet. Apparently, Seagate decided to cheapen something in this drive with the ST3500418AS to make more money without assuring quality and it is an abysmal failure. Both of the new drives were almost instant failures and reviews I am reading are backing up my experience and bad feelings! I am now paying $35 more for the WD WD5003ABYX for the privilege of having a decent, reliable drive. So long, Seagate, until you can get your act together again!Update 5/19/2011: I find it interesting that the 1 star ratings are 42% of the 5 star ratings for these drives. Are you listening Seagate?

I bought this hard drive to replace my main C: drive. Everything went well for about 2 days. Then I started getting automatic checkdisk from windows when I reboot after windows crashed. Finally on one of the auto Checkdisk my windows got corrupted after the automatic repairs. I changed hard drives to a good Samsung hard drive that I was using for backing up my data and put it as my main drive. I needed to reinstall a fresh windows again. Now everything is working great with the Samsung Hard drive. The Seagate I am using as a backup now. I have a software that tells me the condition of the hard drive. It was telling me the raw reading error rate was extremely bad from the start. I thought the software was wrong. Now I see that it was correct. This is a brand new hard drive. I not going to go through the hassle of returning it. It is only good for backup storage if at that.

I bought two of these for use in a Synology NAS. I looked at 2TB drives but they were much more expensive and slower. I decided to accept reduced capacity to save money. The faster speed was a nice bonus. This may not be the latest and greatest hard drive available but it remains a great choice at a great price.
