This drive is slow. I ended up using it as storage only. [...]for a good read. Seagate is not the company they used to be. This is a good 'green' drive for storage, but not for use as a primary drive IMO.

This has got to be the worst drive I've ever used. It lost my data from day 1, even with the new firmware. It's just a bad drive. Avoid it at all costs.

I have measured read and write speeds of well over 100 MB/sec on the outer tracks of this drive. This is the fastest drive I have ever seen, and I have 10000 RPM SCSI drives. The price is right, too. This is an ideal drive for RAID. It is low profile and low power so you can cram them into your case without worry of overheating.

I ordered two of these. One came before the other. Both came in the proper drive packaging that is suitable for Seagate warrantee return requirements so you want to save this packaging. It's perfect. I installed them in on Intel's mini ITX Atom based board that has two SATA ports but does not support RAID. I decided to try Fedora Core 10's software RAID 1 configuration and is my NAS. It has been online since Feb 3, 2009 and the hard drives are working perfectly so far.UPDATE: Today, it's Jan 18, 2011. Both drives are still functioning. I have rebooted a couple times within the last six months I think.

I bought this harddrive because of the large capacity to use in my media center computer.I have used the drive for about a month now, and I am afraid that I have to join the ranks of the people who are experiencing random stuttering.Specifically, when I try to play either HD movies or Blu-Ray movies from an ISO image, the drive will randomly cause the movie playback to start stuttering. Some times I can get lucky and watch an hour without a problem, other times barely 5 minutes of the very same movie. No other processes are consuming any notable resources at the time, so everything seems to point to the hard drive. I have tried defragmenting the harddrive, but nothing seems to make a difference.On the 150GB hard drive that came with the computer, I never experienced any stuttering.

"Performing a firmware update can be risky by itself even in the best of situations" -seagate support website.http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=206091The new drives (as of Feb 2009) STILL have problems (read/write errors). Meanwhile I've been waiting for a week for response from Seagate. I tried calling, and their technical/warranty lines are DOWN, except for the automated service that shuffles you from option to option. I'm returning the unit. Also be aware that Seagate does not offer the firmware from the website. You have to get it from their tech support people on an individual basis (who are not available). They say that it is because "Performing a firmware update can be risky by itself even in the best of situations."

I bought one of these a few months ago. I use it for digital photography files ranging in size from 15MB RAW files to 1.5GB layered Photoshop files. This 1.5TB drive does a great job of moving these files around at sustained throughput speed of about 90-100MB/sec.BUT, after only a month or two, the drive started making the "sound of death" clicking noise, and locking up my whole computer. So I sent it back to Seagate for a replacement, and ordered another one from Amazon.Right now, I am only using these drives for redundant backup, and based on reviews that I have read, the rate of failure on these things is pretty high.Bottom line: these drives are probably good only for high-speed large redundant storage situations, where you can afford to lose a drive without negative consequences.For a primary, large, high-speed drive that is reliable, I recommend the 1TB WD "black".

I was looking to expand some of my 1TB drives and this one was a perfect replacement. Speed is about the same or a little faster (transfer Mb/sec) and seek times are about the same.I read other reviews saying those drives tend to go bad but so far this one has been working fine. No unexpected temperature issues, etc.I run a bunch of drives in a RAID5 array so I'm not overly worried if one crashes.Given the price - I'd say it's a great buy!

Please be aware that this drive also requires you to separately purchase a data cable and rail screws to secure the drive to the PC frame; all you get is the drive. If you order, it's luck of the draw, hope yours works.

First unit was DOA. Got a warranty replacement from Seagate which has been working fine for a few weeks. I thought I was spending $60 for a new hard drive, but ended up paying $70 for a refurb (after shipping original to Seagate -- grrr). Other than that, no complaints.

My 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 installed effortlessly and works well on my Windows XP system. I am buying a second one for backup purposes. This is a cost-effective solution for backups and 1.5TB is enough for all of my digital photographs, MP4 files, and the like.I did not experience any of the firmware issues referenced elsewhere. Highly recommended.

It was working for a month, then it started having hardware errors.1. Linux would re-mount it as read only after hardware error.2. After the reboot it may or may not work at all.3. After a reboot some directories were completely lost.4. The drive would mount fine but stop working after a minute or two.Do not waste your time on this junk. It is far worse than throwing your money away. The only reason to spend money on this hard drive is to pay someone to remove it from your computer.

If you plan to use this in an external enclosure, keep in mind that this is a 4-disk drive and uses up to 2.8A at 12V during spinup. Most enclosures are rated for up to 2A and some will have problems powering up this drive.

I have this drive and it works great. A couple of people are saying that this drive is slow or pauses when transferring files or playing media. They need to check to make sure that there are no jumpers set. This drive normally operates at 300 MB/sec. See below from Seagate's page:"It is not necessary to set any terminators or other settings on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 150MB/sec drives is for factory use only. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 300MB/sec drives can be used to force the drive into SATA 150MB/sec mode for use with older SATA controllers that only work with SATA 150MB/sec drives."The jumper setting can be seen here [...]If your system is sata 1 then you will need this jumper set. If your system is sata 1 and the jumper is not set that could be causing the pause problem since the drive is trying to send the data faster than the system can accept it. If you system is sata 2 and the jumper is set then this could cause slow read/writes.

Well, I am using 2 of these drives in RAID mirror for my My Documents folder (yes you can assign the My Documents folder to specific hard drives, just rt click and go into the properties). This way anything in My Documents is 'backed up' due to redundancy. The drives just work. They are speedy enough, and there is an extravagent amount of storage. I also have 2 250 GB drives in RAID stripping mode for speed, and that gives me just under 1/2 TB on my C drive and 1.5 Tb of storage, total almost 2 TB storage. That is a LOT of space. Fully recommended.

Anyone that would care to have ENORMOUS Hard Drive space in your 24" iMac should buy this little unit. It popped in using the info on this site.[...] I did the job myself. Now Photoshop CS4 has endless space to use. Not to mention it being fast and inexpensive.

I love Seagate hard drives! I had to return one recently after 4.5 years of use. I didn't need the original receipt or be the original purchaser. The return and exchange experience was so positive that even if I wasn't already a committed lifetime buyer I sure as heck am now. I highly recommend this hard drive in particular. I've ready many reviews online and somehow this is as fast as my WD Raptor drive and as fast as most solid state drives which cost many times more per GB. I recommend buying two of them and running in RAID-0 so your PC thinks you have one 3TB drive, b/c that's L33337. ;-D

I've got about 15 of these in my array for movie storage and I've never had one fail. I did have one that said it was unhealthy, but performing a repair fixed it and never had issues since.

I have always bought Seagate drives, recently upgraded my MBP to a 320 MB Seagate, same with my MacMini; so even after reading so many negative reviews I decided to take a chance with it. I upgraded the 500 MB drive in my Time Capsule with the 1.5 TB Seagate and it works perfectly, it not only provides backups using Time Machine for all my Macs, but also works as a media server for all my house and I can stream music and videos from it without a single glitch, even streamed different music for two Macs at the same time. The drive is very fast, very silent and has massive storage. Maybe I just got lucky and the one I received has the new firmware, I actually never even checked what version it was, just installed it. I would definitely recommend this drive it's just awesome, huge amounts of space, quick, silent, low heat, very very affordable and so far very reliable; just hope it stays that way, but so far it's an amazing drive.

Purchased these on the end of September 2008 as replacement for my old 500GB WD RE2. Since that time they run in RAID6 (Areca ARC-1231ML controller) 24/7 without any problem (still keep my fingers crossed however) but even if 2 drives of 4 are dead I will still have all my data intact (that's benefit of RAID6). Drives run very cool and quiet, the only time you can hear scary noise coming from them is when you power the computer on but this is not a problem. Remember - all hard drives fail soon or later, and the only way to have more redundancy is to use at least RAID1 and do regular backups on different media. Will buy next drive soon to expand storage with additional 1.5TB (also very easy with hardware RAID controller). With these drives I can have 16.5TB total storage for my favorite high-def movies (CoolerMaster Stacker 101 case allow you to install 12 drives and you can put 1-2 more for OS inside 5" drive bays). 5 years warranty. Low power consumption. Best price/megabyte.

To me, yes.Not only is the "the Seagate® Barracuda® 7200.12 drive--the 12th generation" company's drive.The drives with capacity multiple of 500 GB are build with 500 GB/platter.There are only three companies producing 500 GB/platter att:Western Digital, Seagate, and Samsung.Seagate's drive, as long as remember, comes with a 5 years warranty.

I recently ordered this drive. I was weary of the quality from some of the negative reviews, but decided to try it out. BIG MISTAKE!!!! The drive arrived in good visual appearance but as soon as I tried to format it, using both windows and seagate's own software, it threw sector errors and refused to format.

The Seagate Baracuda that I bought works just fine. It's fast and quiet and holds a lot of information (1.5T). Since it's SATA there's no worry about jumpers. Just be careful with the cable, which can be a little delicate. The price is excellent. The official reviews were also very good.

The drive works great under XP, but has severe problems with Vista. I now own 4 of these drives and it took a while to figure out why I was having problems. I first started using the drives under Vista and they seemed to work well, but suddenly Vista started freezing up and after a power off and reboot Vista chkdsk couldn't fix the drive. I finally moved it over to an XP machine and the chkdsk fixed it with no problem. It took quite a bit of experimentation to find out that if the drive is more than 2/3 full (more than a TB written on it) when vista tries to deal with it Vista locks up and trashes the drive (happens in both 32 and 64 bit Ultimate Vista). XP has no problem whatsoever with the drive, so for now I have them in the XP machine and can't use them for video streaming under Vista which is why I originally got them.

I purchased 2 of these drives to install in my D-Link DNS-323 Network Attached Storage device that I also purchased from Amazon. The two work great together.So far I have been these drives in the DNS-323 for a month and have had no problems. Overall, I am quite happy with my purchase. Drive failures on the Seagate 7200.11 family have been around 20-30%. Totally unacceptable for this kind of product. Read the reviews on Amazon dot com site or NewEgg dot com. For every excellent review there are 1/3 of very bad reviews with DOA (dead on arrival) or failures after a month. If you care about your data do not buy this drive even if you are gong to use it in RAID configuration as it is known to cause RAID volumes to break as more than one drive would fail at the same time. Search on Google for the Seagate model or look at the Seagate Community Forums, they are on fire! Seagate response? None, non-existing support!!!

This product offers a very good price/storage ratio. However, it suffers from a crippling defect wherein the drive will pause for several seconds and refuse to answer any commands, typically accompanied by a loud "thunk" noise. This happens more often under heavy disk load, making this drive suitable only for storage purposes and not for any important data such as an OS or applications.Per Seagate, this is normal behavior and any data loss associated with this behavior is to be expected. Would not purchase again. Look for a Hitachi or a Samsung.

I have other Seagate hard drives and they are great. They preform well and last long. I love this one because I needed some large storage space and this filled my bill. This drive gives you a lot of space for the money. So far I have had no issues with this drive and it has performed well. However, there are some known faults with this drive that cause it stop working. There is a firmware update available to fix the issue but the update process has also caused the drives to stop working. I suggest doing some research on the issue before deciding to buy.

I purchased this drive for my Drobo. Now going on 90 days without a problem. Limited noise comes from 4 of these drives that populate my Drobo. Once thing is how hot these drives run. I have resorted to placing my Drobo in a ventilated rack system to maximize the cooling of the 4 closely positioned drives.

I am only using this drive as a backup and have been very happy with it over the past month. I have it docked in a Thermaltake BlacX eSATA Hard Drive USB Docking Station with the Serial Ata To External Serial Ata Dual Port Adapter and only have the drive on when I perform manual backups each week. The drive is quiet and has performed solidly for the approximately 40-80 hours of use. I would recommend at this time. If anything changes, I will update this review.

I bought four of these drives from Dell to put in a Drobo drive array thingy. Worked fine for 24 hours, then I started seeing the unit go into "data protection mode" and flash lights indicating drive failure. This has happened three times in four days now. Once it took eleven hours to reconstruct the data that had been on the "failed" drive.Anyway, it now seems there are lots of people having problems with this drive, and the company that makes the Drobo enclosure now has a prominent notice on its support page stating:"Data Robotics has temporarily disqualified the use of the 1.5TB Seagate drives at this time due to reliability issues with the drives.Pending resolution of this matter by Seagate, Data Robotics will re-qualify these drives for use in Drobo."I'm going to call Dell and to try to return them all.

this is my 3rd drive and i'm so happy it didn't fail at least not yet. you will get 1396 GB out of it. of course you will need sata data cable because it's an OEM drive. whats in the box? only the drive in sealed bag and the bill. so don't look for any cables or screws because the isn't any.the installation was easy done in 5 minutes. thankfully my drive wasn't from the effected drives so no firmware update was needed.

I was afraid of buying this disk due to previous reports on firmware problems, but the firmware upgrade at Seagate's site excluded the range of SNs to which my three units belonged. So far the disks have performed flawlessly in a RAID5 setup (Synology DS508 host), about a month already. I understand that the early firmware fixes implied on a slower speed than what this drive is physically capable of, however that's not an issue on a home NAS, since the bottleneck is clearly the network connection.

Well, the disk it self i very good one, almost not noise and not too heavy. The only thing that i dislike is that in Vista(professional) at least 32bits, i did not find yet drivers in order to make it work as just one disk and not have to partitioned it. I think is going to be release in near future. I don't use it in RAID and works great

i buy'ed this disk, about december 08, and i starts to experiment constantly freezes, and windows, constantly check disk screen at boot up.i read some info about this disk and means this disk have problems with firmware, i dont know how change firmware.but, i recommend to people don't buy this disk, its a piece of crap.look at disk dont have problems, like this.

I use this hard drive predominantly for photo storage and it is very responsive and quick. I am very satisfied with this drive and its humongous storage capacity for such a reasonable price.IMPORTANT: KNOW HOW TO FORMAT A DRIVE BEFORE YOU BUY IT!This drive does not come formatted and Windows cannot recognize the full capacity on its own. You have to download the Seagate SeaTools and DiscWizard to be able to do that. It's very simple, and takes less than 5 minutes, just be aware that its not as simple as plug and play.

I'm bought three of these for use on my dns-321 (two for raid 1 and a spare to rebuild if one fails). After updating the firmware on all three drives (from sd17 to sd1a) and on the dns-321 (to support the 1.5T drives), I've had no issues. I was a bit worried about buying these, but they are running fine.I got these from Tiger and they shipped them without packing material so the drives were banged up. What am I gonna do except try them out and hope for the best? Those packers at Tigers are idiots.I also have a dns-323 that I will use once they get the firmware out for the 1.5T drives. If my seagates hold up for another month, I'll buy two more of these drives.Gary

Installed this to replace a smaller hard drive for storing video data. Have had no issues, as other have stated, with playing any of these. They are anywhere from less than a meg to full length movies. They are in a variety of formats: AVI, WMV, MPG, ASF and DAT files. Also most music files too. Very pleased with the increased storage size and plan to start replacing other smaller drives now.

I have had four of these drives for a month now and all have worked flawlessly in my first generation Mac Pro running 10.5.6 . An excellent drive with good speed and at a good price. I checked the serial numbers of the drives before I installed in the Mac and none were affected by the firmware problems early versions had.

Hey, whatz up, if you're looking foward to make a good buy this SEAGATE 1.5 TB HDD is the way to go. All I had to do was plug it and use it. Exellent performance, super fast and super cheap had it for about a month and it hasn't given me any problems. I recomend this product 100%... GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL......

Amazon packaged and shipped this perfectly. They used a special mechanism just for hard drives. Drive has been in for over a week. Running great. I love it. All the drivespeedchecker speed tests I have run show it as fast as my barracuda 750gb. Very fast. I did take people's advice on this board and install the Seagate seatools (free on seagate's web site) to check the firmware. I had sd18 so I upgraded to sd1a using Seagate Firmware Upgrade Utility v4. I do not use RAID, just a home box with home video etc...
