I've been purchasing several hard drives recently including Hitachi and Samsung, and this is the first on I had to send back because it wouldn't format from brand new. That was a big inconvenience and with all the firmware nightmares posted, its clear Seagate is not a 'quality' first company. Won't consider a Seagate again; the Samsung's always preform flawlessly, run cool, and seem to be the most green.

I purchased 10 ten of these bad boys and I haven't had a problem with any of them in four months. I used the Seagate "DiskWizard" software to install them into my Antec 1200 Case. I didn't use any raid options. Eash one is istalled as a single drive. I now have tons of storage space for all of my games, music & movies. What, Me Worry? Thanks Seagate, for making a fine product!

The one I got was one of the affected drives. I quickly got the corresponding firmware from the internet and applied it before using the drive (beware, there are different versions, you must use the correct firmware type).I've had the drive for almost a month now and I have no problems so far. It's only a single drive at the moment, not in a RAID. Transfer rates are great and seeks are pretty silent. It's a great value for the money, I think will be buying more of these drives for backup purposes.

I got these drives for my HP home server, what a breeze, installed them and the server configured them for extra storage... i was dreading having to install them in a separate pc and format them but turned out not to be the case....

I was foolish enough to ignore previous reviews and buy this drive. The first worked ok, but had a piece of metal ratting around inside (good quality control.) The second was completely DOA. I am on Mac OS X10.5.6, by the way. I bought a 2 TB LaCie and have been very happy with it.

I ordered two of these drives and one was DOA. Amazon very promptly replaced it and both drives have been working fine for the two months since. You definitely can't beat this price per gigabyte if you need tons of storage; in fact, you can probably buy twice as many as you need and mirror or backup regularly. I'm a photographer and videographer and love these things. If it weren't for the DOA, this would be a 4 star rating.

Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5 TB Barracuda Sata 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 8.5MS Hard DriveI just bought this 1.5 TB drive and it works well. The formatting took a few hours but that can be expected considering it's size.Can't say I experienced those problems that other reviewers had, it seems lightning fast and it's not my primary drive but a secondary drive for archiving all the media you seem to gather so quickly these days.Only risk I see is if something does go wrong you stand to loose an awful lot of data.perhaps buying a set of smaller drives is wiser if you have enough free drive bays.Nearly Christmas 2008 now and it is still going strong, ripped 100's of DVDs to it and it plays them without a hitch....

I bought two of these (not from Amazon, but another vendor), and they are unusable for media or any other near real time use. Every 5-10 minutes, the drives will stop responding for a period of time (10-30 seconds). Data is not lost, but it's useless for playing back media files, as videos and even MP3s will stop playing.SMART monitoring shows no errors and that the drive is working properly.It is possible that Seagate will fix this in firmware, or it's possible that both of the ones I received (from the same batch) are defective. To be certain, this is Model ST31500341A Revision: SD17I've read a few reports on the internet of others having similar issues, but then plenty of people say the drives work great. So who knows if it is a firmware issue, a bad batch of drives, or what.

I have 25 years of professional experience working on computers. I thought that others were wrong and I could make it work.....I'm wrong. I tried it on a Mac....won't work. I tried it on Windows.....won't work. I contacted Seagate Tech Support....they were supposed to get back to me in 24 hours.....no response. This drive is severely flawed and Seagate won't even attempt to fix it.Don't waste your money.

I felt like I really gambled on this drive, but so far I am very happy with it! The firmware did not need to be updated, as it had the latest firmware already installed. It is fast, huge and you can't beat the price. What's not to like? Recommended!

This is a great hard drive from Seagate. I use this hard drive for my NAS. It has been turned on since I installed it. I have been filled up 60% of the total capacity. I will continue purchasing this hard drive when I expend my storage.

I, also, bought this hard drive (not from Amazon) and have experienced the same thing with media (audio in iTunes) playback. There was a noticeable lag every so often and I had to move my library back to the other drive that I was migrating from. However, the drive is VERY good for backups, archiving and general storage as it has a usable space of 1.36 TB (1,360 GB) which is MORE than enough for a daily backup of my boot drive, a weekly backup of my iTunes library and Toast images of all of my software CDs so that I have access to all of my software without wasting time searching around for them later.All in all, a very good, LARGE storage drive (5 stars) but a poor media playback drive (1 star). Good for room, not for iTunes.

My main drive was getting full and my system was getting slower so I needed a bigger drive. Setting it up was breeze- just plugged it in and the operating system recognized it immediately. Formatted it and used Acronis to transfer all software then pointed to the new drive as the boot drive. Worked perfectly! Great product. Great buy!

It stores 1.5 Gb, runs fine and is a good buy. I can't speak for extreme usage. Bought them to back up 40 years of videos and pictures and stuck them in a drawer. Used all 1.5TB. Sure hope they work 10 years down the road if I need them.

Seagate claims they fixed the problem. Based on serial number they say there is no problem with my drive. However, sometimes the drive will not get detected on boot. I'm going to return it since it is obviously still defective.

it worked great for 7 days, then worked at 1/4 speed for 3 days, i read about the firmware update trying to get speed back up due to the 32mb buffer issue, no prob i thought follow directions change the firmware. after the attempted firmware update i have a 2 pd paper weight that doesnt even spin up at boot. seagate just lost all future buisness from me. i should have stuck with old reliable western digital. dont buy this piece of junk. lost all 1.36 tb of video thanks seagate

At the time of review (JAN-09), you won't find anything bigger. Works as expected and it's reasonably cheap if you take into consideration that it's state of the art. I was a little worried because of the freezing issues that people has been experiencing but fortunately that wasn't my case. I updated the firmware just to be in the safe side :)

I bought a 1.5 tb Barracuda 3 days ago. After 18 hours, it crashed my Macintosh. None of my software recovery could do anything with it. I took it to a local computer store. They had no luck with it. So I exchanged it for another new one yesterday. I brought it home, and it would not even mount. All I heard was a clicking sound. So that one was returned also. I have since warned the computer store about the problem. Don't buy until, or if, they get all the kinks worked out of this device.

I am very pleased with the value, that is, amount of storage capacity for the purchase price. There is slight latency in the response time but that might be expected for this size disc. SATA CONNECTOR CABLE IS NOT INCLUDED.

Seagate is blaming operating systems for the drive's failures, but it just breaks down all the time. They're not wanting to resolve the problem. Horrible customer support. Don't buy it!Edited June 5, 2009: I forgot to come back and edit this to say that they finally did come out with a firmware update in January that did fix the problems. BUT that was months after the problem appeared. Months after they tried to blame everyone else for the problem. You can probably buy one of these drives and not have problems now, but I don't trust this company anymore.

Out of the many makes of drives, Seagate is the only one who still offers 5 year warranties and they do not pro-rate their warranty like the others recently changed policy to. This drive has all the room you need, it's quiet and it's fast, in SATA II mode (AHCI). I highly recommend most any Seagate product as they function with little issues and they are supported by Seagate with little hassel. 8 cents a gigabyte is rather cheap.

I installed this drive over christmas break, and do far I have had no problems. I used it as a replacement for a 500gig WD drive that went kaput after less then a year. The drive is pretty fast, not like the raptors, but its not priced the same either. So far I'm pretty happy.

I initially tried to set this drive up with the Disk Management Utilities within Vista, but it did not recognize the full drive capacity, for some reason. I then downloaded and ran the Seagate DiskWizard from their website, and I got the full 1.5TB drive capacity, with no errors or bad sectors. It's fast and runs cooler than my other SATA II external drives that are a lot smaller.

Seagate 1.5TB 32MB SATA Hard Drive ST31500341AS - Good product, in use archiving video from a dish network DVR. At the present rate it will take me 10-11 months to fill the drive up. By then a second 1.5TB or better will be dirt cheap. Don't you love technology?

I never write reviews on Amazon for anything, but in this case, I feel it is warranted. When this drive first came out a month or so ago, I couldn't believe the size for the price. I ordered 7 of them from Amazon and various vendors for different machines. Over the last 4 weeks, 3 of them have gone bad. All in the same way. They starting clicking for a couple of days (while still working) then they just die. 3 out of 7 hard drives dying in a month is just unheard of. And yes they are all properly ventilated and kept cool to the touch.

I have went through two of these. Fastest hard failure ever, in my experience. 6 days for the 1st drive. 4 days for the 2nd. Seagate had the best drives before these types of drives. Not any longer. Seagate dropped the ball on this one and they act like they have lost it.

There were many reviews indicating problems with this drive in a RAID configuration. I am using the drive for storage space in a multi-disk machine, each as separate drives. Works great, no problems at all. Very happy with the drive. Lots of storage space for the money.

got it like 3 weeks ago and i have been running it as a my main back-up drive. i've been watching movies and playing games straight from it and no problems so far great item. The only worry i got so far is what else i should dl to fill up this baby >:D

This drive has a major problem. Seagate is aware of this and claims to be working on a firmware revision. I own 4 of these drives and all of them have exhibited problems. I will be looking to replace them ASAP. See the following link to an article by Cyril Kowaliski on techreport.com...[...]Addendum: Seagate never resolved this problem. I got stuck with 4 expensive paper weights. Now I buy my HD's from Hitachi.

This hard drive has a well-documented problem with freezing up, sometimes locking up your entire system. There's a firmware fix available--ONLY IF YOU BOOT INTO DOS. If you run Linux or Mac OS X, you're out of luck.

Don't buy this drive until Amazon publishes the firmware upgrade version they are selling. there are significant issues with the two I bought. One was just flat out dead.

The drive died almost immediately (30% into formatting). After rebooting, the BIOS could no longer detect the drive. I should have read the reviews before I bought it. I'm returning it for a refund, not a replacement. I thought Seagate made quality drives. Not any more. Zero stars for this piece of junk.

This product is mess! It had numerous problems and I had to call Seagate 5 times to get them resolved. The problems were with the product not my computer. It still will not write files. I am going to return it. I do not recommend this hard drive to anyone.

I just purchased this one for storage, copied over 900GB at once from one of WD Greenpower drive to this one. It didn't freeze up but it is louder than most of my other hard drive. It it could be more quite, I will give it a 5 star.

installed on a new windows vista 64 bit home premium with no problems. just connected the power and SATA connector. I did not need to upgrade firmware to get vista to recognize it.

Just purchased this Hard drive, work fine and well on Raid 0, Had no problem so far either during file copying, HD movies or playing games or any sort.Also i did not notice any heating problems with the drive. I hope what i read from other people reviews about this drive does not happens to me, Cheers.

I should have believed the other reviews. After about 15 minutes of working, I was no longer able to access the drive. And ofter 2 days of trying different things, I returned it for the 1TB.

connect to an XP or Linux machine to format. Took a few hours to format using vista. Only 4 stars because, although it works great, it has no competitor at 1.5tb to compare to.
