I got a used mac pro off craigs list, and wanted to utilize it's much spaceness. Thus I decided to purchase this sizable hard drive.I partitioned it: 1TB & 500GB. I'm using the second 500GB slab for a dual boot of fedora. It's a really annoying process, but you'll be happy to know that this hard drive has continued to hold all my data as promised.

The Seagate Barracuda gives me the freedom to concentrate on other work while it adds loads of movies unattended. It is an apt companion for my Dell which runs on Windows XP. I made three partitions - 100, 100 and 120 - to store movies, work files and music and was able to format all the three partitions without a pause. However, the video streaming was a bit of a problem because there has been pauses in-between probably due to the firmware problem. Checked for firmware updates and now the problem seems to have stopped. Wondering why it dropped out of raid config without any reason on a couple of instances. I had problems downloading the internet connection drivers. Required help on that..And I would like to know why Seagate did not include the chassis screws?

I purchased three of these drives to expand the internal storage in my heavily upgraded PowerMac video editing system. The drives perform as advertised, but I failed to check the peak current draw at start-up which exceeded the available current in my 1KW power supply. The peak start-up current is about 45% higher on this particular model, all other specs are the same or very close to the other 1TB drives I own. My solution to the problem was to move two of the drives out to an external drive enclosure.Overall, a very good value with good performance.

I tried 3 of these drives and was disappointed to see read and write errors, as well as bad sectors, start to pile up after only a few days of heavy use. There may be good ones out there too, but it only took three bad drives to convince me to move to a different vendor.

Its a hadr drive, it does what hard drives do, my only reservation is the fact that amazon no longer does any form of "price protection" so I have no way of knowing whether or not I got a good deal. But in the end the price was acceptable.

I've always had good luck with the Seagate brand and this drive lived up to my expectations. Drive isn't plug and play, needs to be formatted in order to use. I bought it along with a Coolmax 3.5" enclosure [...] to use as external backup. Works great!

This HDD died after under 3 years of light use. I would expect a hard drive to last longer than that. The drive still spins up but does not provide data storage.

1.5TB for under $100?If you are building your own PC these are a fine choice for your "cheap and deep" storage area. Buy them in pairs, mirror them (RAID 1), and forget about them.Spend your cash on your Solid State Drive for boot and swap. Put your high-IO areas on a set of more expensive, faster drives.But for archives? It's hard to beat a 1.5TB RAID 1 set for $190.

After a couple of experiences with Western Digital HDs i cannot rate an HD with a 5. This Seagate has been working properly so far, i did not havev any type of trouble with the setup since my PC recognized it with no problems. It's a little noisy when it start but overall it's worth the buy.

I dont normally buy used things, but this SATA 500 GB hard drive works perfectly. I recently bought a usb enclosure to use as an external hard drive and it works perfectly. No problems or no loud noises.

I have considerable experience working on computers, having done so for 20 years. This hard drive was quite difficult to get to install properly initially. All previous Seagate drives that I've purchased in the past have installed without a problem, however, this one is an exception to that rule. I was installing this to replace a faulty 750GB drive that was a primary drive in a computer. After I installed the hard drive, and booted up the computer, the cluster count on the drive was accurate. I formatted the drive as NTFS5.0 using a bootable utility disk that has worked wonders for me in the past, upon reboot to install the OS, the drive was no longer reading the accurate size, but rather, was being rated as a 4 MB (yes, MB) drive.In order to get the drive to function properly, I had to initially format it as a Linux EXT3 drive, then reformat it using Windows installation into an NTFS format with a full format instead of a quick format. This was an extremely lengthy process of elimination of circumstances for its miscalculation of size. Once the initial difficulties were taken care of, the drive has performed wonderfully.The technical specs that I have encountered with this drive are as follows:Average latency: 4.22 msecAverage read seek time: 8.14 msecAverage write seek time: 9.55 msecDefinitely a good value if you are tech savvy enough to overcome some initial difficulties.

Bigger hard drives are a bargain now. Don't get one that is huge or you will lose a lot like I did when my WD 500 gigger lost it's file system after a BSOD shutdown.My other seagate is only 80 gigs and going strong after 3 years. I have three hard drives in my pooter, one pata and two sata's.

Seagate had issues with a firmware update that caused a lot of users problems early in 2009. This was unfortunate, as Seagate's Barracuda line has always been the top or next to the top, in throughput. So basically, the people who buy Barracudas are looking for something pretty good for their system.Fortunately, this drive, so far, runs very well. We purchased two of the 1 TB drives and are using them in a RAID configuration. They run pretty quiet and they are truly fast.The bulk drive normally comes in a cheap cardboard box with a wrap or two of bubble-wrap. This does not truly isolate the drive, as, when purchased from another vendor, one arrived with a broken SATA port. This was sent back for a refund, and I got its replacement from Amazon.Amazon ships it in a cardboard box, but it is much better insulated, with plenty of space around the drive and the two ends being housed in shock-absorbing plastic. It looks cheap, but you soon realize it is the most practical way to get a bulk drive shipped.This is a good buy for anyone wanting speed, low noise, and capacity as a low price.

Purchased some of these drives for a RAID, and half were DOA. Seagate's drives seem to have taken a nosedive in reliability recently. This is, of course anecdotal, and may not be cause and effect, but it seems that since much of the production was shifted from Thailand and Singapore to China, the drives are not reliable. I have been using Seagate drives for more than two decades, and have had great success until the last few years. Maybe it's a coincidence, but the only Seagate drives I've had fail were the ones purchased in the last couple of years, and all were produced in China. It has been more than a few, now. Half of the examples of this model I purchased were DOA- one, for example, spun up, but was unformattable. Drive failed the Seatools tests and reported a huge number of unrepairable bad sectors. If you can't count on HDs to be reliable, how can you function (computer-wise, of course)? Of course, I back up redundantly and in real-time, but who wants to go messing around having to constantly restore data? Also, Amazon's "Frustration-Free Packaging" is a little on the skimpy side as far as protection goes.

I'm a graphic designer who uses this drive to store not only Photoshop files, images and other materials, but have also taken advantage of the extra space to house my music, web scripts and more. The drive works great on my older model Dell 8300 running an older PATA drive. I highly recommend it.

This is a serial drive, so if you have an older computer you will need to buy a parallel to SATA adapter in the form of a cable or converter hardrive connector. As others said the packaging could be better, there was really very little packing to minimize vibration during shipping. Luckily the hardrive worked. Very quiet and smooth operating unit. You can tell that Seagate and other long time hardrive makers really have made great improvements. The big problem in getting it to work is that you have to get it formatted for your operating system to work (Windows 7). It would be nice for them to give you a piece of paper showing you where to get support, especially to have it setup for NT format. I finally got it done but it took a lot of "fooling" around to get everything running.

So far so good. Using it as a media drive for music and video and haven't seen any drop in playback speed compared to when media was on a much smaller drive (~80GB).

I got this hard drive cause i was running out of space. Now I have plenty to put all my photos and videos. Hope it last long. Seems to be good so far so good. Noise level is low. Speed is fast. My C drive was running at 25% free space. So my pc was running slow. I got this drive and moved all my big files over to it so I can free up some space on C drive. Cleaned C drive, Defrag it and it's running fast again. I love it. I highly recommend it.

I purchased this OEM (meaning no box or manual, just the drive) hard drive from Amazon. Shipping took almost two weeks. But I can not believe it when I received the box. I could hear the drive bouncing around in the box. I could not believe it. I opened the box and that was NO packing what so ever in the box. Just the drive in anti static wrap and the packing list. The static bag was pretty beat up and had holes in the corners where it had banged around in the box during shipping. I am returning this drive. I will not risk my data to a drive that has traveled the country rattling around in box for days.I can hardly believe Amazon would ship anything in this manner, especially a fragile hard drive.I have purchased many things for Amazon, like books and they have enough bubble wrap and those air bags to take a beating, but a hard drive, come one, Amazon you can do better and should know better.Go forward I will stick to books, heck after this, maybe not even that.I have photos and video of the box and drive showing it being opened for the first time.I would recommend buying computer equipment from a computer company and not a book company that does not know how to ship.

I purchased this drive to replace one that failed in a 5 year old Dell 4700. It was a easy to install and reload the operating system, all the user accounts and all of the software I wanted. Luckily I had been automatically backing up all data files so I was then able to quickly put all use files back in place. Reloading the OS and needed applications got rid of accumulated junk so at the end of the day the computer ran faster than pre-crash.Great price, great product.

The drive came as advertised, in about the time frame it was supposed to come. It worked right out of the box and I was able to get my wife's computer set up with the new drive the same day. So far it's working out great, and she has lots of free space on her drive now.

This is nice hard drive...it works as it says...not problem in installing...computer detects is like 1..2..3...format as NTFS or any format...works..writing speed is good...does not make too much noise for me..overall...it's good hard drive..and price is good too..

I very much like this drive. It is fast, quiet, and has had a very good history in our raid servers. HOWEVER, ordering this drive from Amazon was sadly a mistake. Three drives were ordered last week and when they arrived our IT department was blown away at the lack of packaging. Three drives were placed in a large box free to slosh, clank, and bang into each other. The only padding that was included was air filled bags. The drives, of course, failed every test our raids put on them just to initialize them. Our Raid server immediately upon installing the drives notified us that all three drives were experiencing extreme data loss and should be replaced as soon as possible.Love the drives and love Amazon but I have to suggest ordering them from any other vendor until Amazon realizes that "approved" packaging is not 3 small drives placed into a 14" x 10" box to slosh around. Those that are experiencing problems or those that are thinking about ordering - look at the packaging when it arrives and save yourselves headaches and return the drives if they are not adequately packed! Nobody likes installing hours of software just to have a drive die 6 months later.- Bri

I used this drive along with an eSATA external enclosure to expand the storage on my Cable Company DVR. Seems to be working great and has increased the storage space of the DVR 10-fold. The drive has all the necessary specs to fill any sort of storage needs with extremely fast data streaming.

I bought two of these drives for my HP MediaSmart Home Server model EX495. Packaging and shipping were excellent. These drives appear to be the exact model currently shipped with the HP MediaSmart EX495 Home Server. HP EX495 1.5TB Mediasmart Home Server ( Black) Both installed in about a minute without a hitch. I added them to the server storage pool with one click in the MediaSmart configuration application, and they have been running quietly and reliably ever since. By the way, I bought the server here, as well. Best prices I could find anywhere on both the server and drives, online or brick-and-mortar. I've had better luck lately with the Seagate brand than with Western Digital. Also note that you must use the 7200 RPM drives with the HP MediaSmart EX495. Slower drives may be a little bit cheaper/larger, but, unlike these drives, they are not recommended by HP for use in the MediaSmart server.

I used this SATA hard drive as a second internal mass storage device. It was a matter of connecting it to the motherboard with a SATA data cable, connecting the power source and a single BIOS setting change to make it visible in Windows Explorer. Formatting this drive made it ready for anything. I am very happy with this purchase. File size is not a problem anymore.

I ordered 2 of this from Amazon. Put them into NAS (DNS-323) and configure as RAID-1. Worked in a couple of days, and then NAS kept saying my RAID-1 is degraded. Pull the both out of NAS, and use Seagate tool to test. One of them failed SMART test.Return and refund is under way.

I have 2 of these (one for over a year, the other for over 6 months), and have had no problems with them. I bought them when they were $100, and now they keep going down in price. I'm tempted to get another (I do video editing so I use a lot of space). They aren't the fastest around, but I have no problems with them. If you want to spend more money on a faster drive, be my guest, but this works perfectly for me and all my data.

Loud?? The complainers must have really sensitive ears, this is the quietest drive I've ever owned. I can't tell it's accessing data unless I look at the flashing light on the outside of my case. The drive installed flawlessly. The drive is a real fast one, too, it's noticably faster than any I've used in the past. Basically, you expect a hard drive to perform right out of the box, and this one does! I've had issues in the past with reliability when using WD drives but I dig the Seagate products, never had a crash or a performance or installation problem. Love it!!

Ordered 5 of these for our external RAID5 enclosure, but continued to get error messages and RAID crashes. Took them out and used a couple of these 1.5 TB drives in my Mac and they work fine. I then purchased Seagate 1 TB drives for our RAID and haven't had a problem. Seems like the 1.5 is okay for computers, but not for external RAID boxes.

Seagate quality control failed me. The 1.5TB hard drive I ordered through amazon.com arrived DOA. It will not power up. I have ordered Seagate hard drives in the past from amazon.com without any quality issues. Seagate quality control should be adequate to prevent dead drives from being shipped to customers. Has anyone purchased Western Digital hard drives recently? I purchased Western Digital drives in the 1990's and was happy with their products at that time.

I bought this HD after I checked some previous reviews about this product so I took the decision to get it. The first week I got my first drive I started having problems with it because sometimes it was not recognized by the Bios and sometimes it was. One week after it never came up. I delivered the defective one and one I got the replacement it worked fine for 1 year. Now it is not recognized either by the seatools for Windows software or the Bios. I have to send it back again.

We purchased over 20 of these drives a few months ago. Of the 20only 1 went "bad". Good speed. Reliability is iffy at most with somany bad reviews about it. We believe buyers will spend time writinga bad review because they DID GET a bad product.Which leads us to believe that Seagate, which has been a great companyfor producing Hard Disks in the past, hired a double agent from WesternDigital a couple of years ago unknownly, and now WD is rising, andSeagate falling...Think about it Seagate.Danxo (The Walter Judson Group)

I purchased three of these drives. I was hesitant after the problems with version 11 but after reading a review on how fast there drives were and reading that the version 12 drives were fixed I went ahead. I set up two drives in a RAID 1 and used the third drive as my boot drive. Within 24 hours my PC was slowing down and during boot I was getting a "RAID degraded message". Then the clicking started. I isolated the clicking drive by pulling the power from the drives one by one. It was one of the RAID drives. I sent it back to Amazon and received a new drive. I installed the new drive, the RAID rebuilt itself. Less than 24 hours later my system started to slow and the clicking started again. This time it was the Boot Drive. Same process, returned the drive, got a new drive and installed the drive. Less than 24 hours later the new boot drive started clicking and freezing my system. 3 of 3 is a 100% failure rate. In fact Amazon has chosen to not replace my drive, they will only provide a refund. How can a company like Seagate have such poor quality control. I love the performance of the drives but........

I installed this as a second drive in my desktop computer and have been satisfied with the performance. I would rate it as very quiet. If I listen closely I can tell that it is running, but that is about all. The only sound that is really noticeable is when it auto-parks after it has been idle for a while, and when it restarts when I access it. I actually enjoy hearing the "snap-snap" sound that occurs when the two drives auto-park in sequence when the computer goes to sleep -- I guess I am just easily entertained!One caution: this is an OEM package, so don't forget to order a SATA cable and the appropriate (very short) 6-32 screws to go with it, as there is nothing in the package except the drive itself. I was able to find "retail package" drives locally, which include the SATA cable in the box (don't know if it includes screws), but they were all the 7000.11 version, not the 12th generation drive like this one. The 7000.12 is supposed to be quite a bit lower in power consumption, and based on the wattage readout on my UPS I can confirm that this drive adds very little load to the power supply.

I purchase 4 of these drives over the period of a month. They all have under 100 hrs of use and only one is still operational with substantial errors and warnings from the S.M.A.R.T diagnostics on the drive. Working with the vendor is a challenge, they would like you to run their diagnostics but on dead drives nothing happens and getting to support without that is a challenge, still trying. Apart from that, the drive sounded like a great solution for storage but given the failure rate, I'm not happy or would NOT recommend them. At least if support was accessible, then you could work with that. Some of folks complained here about packaging, in my case the boxes arrived in very good conditions and the drives were well protected.
