At the time of writing, I have around 16 x 7200.11 drives... of which 9 are the 1.5TB ones (all of which are running the latest firmware, CC1H).The 1.5TB ones are running in RAID 6 on a quality RAID controller (3ware 9650SE-24M8) and every few weeks, one of the drives goes into DEGRADED mode.In all, I've had to send back 4 dead drives and 2 which stopped being read by the controller/BIOS.The worst part of it, is that Seagate keeps feeding me the same BS over and over about how I'm part of a small minority of its customers experiencing these issues or that I must be doing something wrong with my machines or that I'm the unluckiest guy around to have several defective drives...They don't even cover my shipment costs expecting me to continue paying for these drives.I've just about had it with Seagate... the next time I experience any of the above faults, they're either paying all shipping costs and arranging pick-up OR they're paying to replace all my drives with Western Digital equivalents OR they're gonna find themselves target of a lawsuit.

Seagate is known for their Barracuda hard drives. Currently, this is the only manufacturer I would buy a drive from since several La Cie drives failed because of faulty enclosures. After I had taken out 3-4 drives out of their enclosures and trashed them (still have the drives) another La Cie drive starting acting up so I took it out of it's enclosure and discovered it was the power connector to the circuit board, it was not making contact for some reason so it kept powering off and on, I fixed it so the connectors were always in contact and the drive now works perfectly, no power issues. I never had this problem with Seagate drives and because of this they are my brand for now on. I'm a film maker and artist and can't afford to lose any data.

I installed this as a second drive in my G5 Mac computer and have been satisfied with the performance. I already replaced the original drive with a Seagate just like this one and it is running great. I really can't hear either one running other than when they spin up. The only sound that is really noticeable is when it auto-parks after it has been idle for a while, and when it restarts when I access it. I have always liked Seagate and they have always been reliable for me. The 160 GB OEM Seagate drive in the G5 finally died and it ran almost continusly for six and a half years. I am really happy to have the 1TB drives, one backing up the other. I agree with the other commenters that they're also quiet and don't seem to run too hot. I can recommend this product.

I have had this drive for only a month now -- So I cant truely speak for reliability, but this drive is fairly quick and does its work silently. I have 2 drives in my computer and its amazing when I access my second drive it sounds like a turbo jet is revving up -- the barracuda remains silent and powers through some pretty intensive tasks. For sure there are drives which are much quieter and faster (ie ssds) but those drives lack one thing... space. 1.5 TB is enough to satisfy me for the next couple years until the next best thing. I definitely recommend this drive to anyone looking to upgrade

It crashed on me with numerous bad sectors after several years of service. Good thing I have back-ups for back-ups which back-up just in case thing like this happens.

I own my own Tech company and have worked in major DataCenters throughout the world. Not a single Mainframe, reputable server, or enterprise desktop, uses any other HDD other than Seagate. Period. Seagate invented the Floppy disk. Invented first HDD to fit in the FDD 3.5" form, first to introduce 5400rpm, 7200rpm, 10K, 15K, and so on. I have never had a Seagate HDD crash on me, EVER. One customer though had one that had died, it was a 10GB HDD from 1990. Also WD suck. They always crash. Also Seagate are the only drives that have Shock Protection.The people who rate this product negatively are obviously ID10T's. If you buy a 1TB HDD the r/w time is going to lag, read the specs on the manufacturers website. Please do not complain about something you should have investigated beforehand.Bigger Drive = slower speed.I have one of these HDD's and I only use it as a Secondary Backup Drive.You want speed go with SCSI.

I purchased this drive to use as an external backup drive so I can keep my most important data physically separated from my main computer. I am lucky in that the motherboard for my computer has an external SATA port so I was able to put this drive in a case that is designed for external SATA drives -> external SATA ports, rather than using a slower USB 2.0 port. So, consequently, by using the external SATA port I'm getting data transfer speeds just as if I was using this drive internally, and this drive is fast. I'd recommend it as it is affordable and very cost effective

My computer came with a 40 GB C drive and I wanted a bigger one as I'm running out of storage for DVD work. I used Acronis True Image to do a disk image of the old C drive, pulled it out, installed the new Barracuda and let ATI do it's thing. In about 1 1/2 hours I had a perfectly opertional C drive without having to spend most of the day downloading Windows updates, TrendMicro updates, and all the drivers that would have to be downloaded and installed. Now I have plenty of storage with the 500 GB C drive and a 650GB slave drive.Oldyeller

This drive must be the least noisy drive i've ever own. the price was ok and the package it came in was secure and very easy to open. i just hope i don't fill this drive too quickly. for now it works great, i haven't had any issue.

With a little difficulty, the hard drive installed nicely. A cloning software would have been nice but it was the problem from the manufacturer so I bought a third party program and that did the trick

got it in 2008136 bad sectors, 8-250million raw read errors a day and similar seek error rate.10+ spin up retrys (not powersupply related)works, has decent transfer rates. believe it or not im still running a winxp system on it with hardly any problems besides it hanging on boot 1-3 times every day (could be unrelated).

I ordered Seagate 250GB SATA drives and received them, as described. Not much to review here. In my overall experience, over the past 10 years, Western Digital and Seagate drives have the lowest failure rate, so that is what I always order.

I currently already had 2 Seagate internal hard drives for my Mac Pro behemoth. Both worked very well, except the one time about 8 months into owning the computer one of them gave me a "failing" warning in Disk Utility, so I was able to back everything up and had it replaced. Other than that, beautiful, hard working hard drives. Bought this third hard drive a few days ago for more storage space, and I haven't had a single problem with it. Installed easily, formatted like a charm, and is working just well. Quiet drive, starting-up sound for it is no real different than the other Seagate drives I own. I would recommend this to other people.

I bought it to supplement 1 tb drive in my Netgear NAS Duo network attached storage (to function in RAID1 configuration it needs to drives, but I bought it with one,also from Amazon). This drive is compatible with NAS Duo, and does the job. I liked the packaging which is environmentally friendly.

I bought two new Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB - SATA-300 on October 13 2009, they shipped with the CC1H firmware. They worked fine under Windows 7, but about 30 days later I started to hear the click,click,click then the computer would lockup with Event Log errors that hard drive timed out. I ran SeaTools for DOS (boot cd-rom) which found 6 errors and fixed them. About 10 days later the computer froze again, upon reboot it wouldn't boot. SeaTools for DOS said the drive was not responding to any commands. I called Seagate Support was said there were no known problems with this drive and sent me over to Warranty Support where I paid $19 dollars to get another drive shipped so I can re-build my PC. Google search for Barracude 1.5TB freezing has a lot of hits.

Frustrated. Returned the drive after repeatedly unable to format drive in a Windows Vista PC. Formatting hung at 73% complete two times in a row. Seagate diagnostic software could not find a problem. Should of read the many other unsatisfied reviews on Amazon before purchasing this Seagate. Returned the Seagate Barracuda to Amazon and purchased a Samsung 1Tb SATA, formatted it without a hitch and it works without an issue.

When I plugged this drive into my PC, the BIOS and XP reported the drive contained only 32MB instead of 1TB. After trying a few things, I burned a bootable CD with MHDD on it. This utility reported the drive had 1TB. I used the CONFIG and FDISK commands of MHDD to reset the drive information. After that, my BIOS and XP reported the drive contained 1TB. It works well.I'm giving the item 4 stars because of the need to reset the disk info to 1TB and because Amazon's packing was terrible for a disk drive.

I bought for of these drives for my Drobo and then added a fifth several days later when I started having problems. I wanted to believe it was just one of the drives in my array failing and not an issue with every drive. After all, Seagate wasn't communicating anything in response to the thousands of inquiries I discovered in retrospect. Once it became obvious there was something seriously wrong with this drive and those failure lights would continue on my Drobo, I attempted to quickly move off the mass of data I had moved over - but I didn't beat the clock. I woke up the following morning with a catastrophic array failure on my Drobo.Needless to say I sent these drives back. At that point Seagate still hadn't claimed any issues (though Drobo had posted an alert by then, essentially saying "we know there's something wrong with these drives and if Seagate won't admit it, we will advise our customers directly to not use them").I used to exclusively buy Seagate hard drives. After having lost half a terabyte of highly valuable data I cannot ever imagine buying another from them. It's one thing to have an issue; it's entirely different to spend months pretending it doesn't exist. I've since moved to Western Digital Green 1TB drives that run much quieter and cooler. They also seem to work extremely well, with no failures so far.My recommendation is to really think hard before you buy any drive model that has any history of failure, even the company finally owns up and provides a potential firmware patch. This isn't like a video or ethernet card or any other device - it's the place you store your most valuable information. Don't trust it to just any hard drive and don't just buy on hard drive size and price alone, or you'll regret it. I still do.

I have ordered 2 of these disks. 1 started showing reallocation counts on the smart++ interface with in 1 month. Which means that the disk is basically moving data to save it. I have these configures on RAID 0 configuration. So I am returning one of the bad disk to Amazon which is shipping the disk now. I will see how many more months this will last. I am hoping nothing bad will happen from now till the replacement disk arrives. I am not sure why Seagate is making such a bad disk with high capacity when its not reliable to store anything on it.

Got it in mail, package perfect. Attempted to use as replacement drive in PC. Bios wouldn't detect it. Tried to detect it plugged into external drive case. Several systems attempted none could detect it, drive did not seem to spin up. Big thanks to Amazon for fast and easy return policy. Won't be trying anymore of these drives.

I needed a new drive for my laptop,so I went to Amazon. Unfortunately their website has some problems. I searched for Laptop/notebook drives and this product came up in the results(not sure why). So when I saw a Seagate Barracuda 500 gig in the results I was thrilled. I'd never seen a Barracuda drive for a laptop before(I used to work at Seagate Labs in development). So I was excited because I know the reliability and performance of the Barracuda drive. Its a shame I couldn't use this drive. It's an even bigger shame that Amazons' web site is not able to tell the difference between laptop and desktop and that Amazon is charging me so much for returning it that it's not worth it to do so.

I have had good success with Seagate drives in the past (older PATA models). Because of this, I decided to buy one of these 7200.12 1TB drives despite the mixed reviews (and 7200.11 known problems). It failed in a week--good thing I hadn't yet trusted it with much data. At least I can just return it to Amazon and buy another brand rather than being stuck with a refurb or whatever from a Seagate warranty claim.

I purchased 2 of these drives. They are a good buy for the storage space. The only issue I have is not with the product but how it was shipped. We know how drives are shipped in foam or protected crate to protect them. Well the shipping department had one drive in the protective protected crate and just threw the other drive in the bottom of the box where is could be bounced around and banged up. I had to format the drive twice to get it to work. I hope it lasts.

Great value for money but please not that this package was not sealed plus it had no wires in it. The order shipped a week after it was purchased. Not sure why. Happy with the product but shipping took forever.

I ordered two of these for a HTPC build on which I'm working. They're replacing two WD Caviar Black 500g drives in a RAID 0 configuration. They work Great! Very Quite and Fast. Not quite as fast as the WDs, but much quiter. The only problem I am having, and I am not sure if its the drives, my RAID controler software, or my MB BIOS, but I am only able to utilize 1.1t of space per drive for a total of 2.2t. That means I have lost 800g of storage. I have not had the time to research whats causing the problem, since it could be the drives I give them four stars. All in all a good product

This item arrived very quickly and was packed very securely in a damage proof box. I gave this as a present to a nephew with very little experience with computers. Although there was no documentation with the unit, the Seagate site provided all the necessary instructions and documentations. Having purchased an additional drive for my computer, I knew to buy the cable at the same time. My nephew installed the drive and set it up in about 20 minutes. It works perfectly. I would highly recommend this product and vendor in the future.

I purchased the Seagate ST3160318AS bare drive for interim use with one of the same drives I already owned. I built a RAID 0 array for use with my Apple Final Cut Pro HD video editing and production (Studio Pro HD) software. It works great in that capacity. The drive worked as expected. I was very happy to find out that it shipped with the latest firmware that is necessary to keep the drive from failing. Because of the seriousness of the firmware issue I still strongly suggest everyone make sure that their drives have the latest firmware from Seagate on these Barracuda hard drives.

I partitioned and formatted and it only came out to 1.35 terrabytes, I really do not want to go through the hassle of unscrewing the drive, unplugging, taking it out, and shipping/returning this drive back to the sender but seriously, they need to check their drives. VERY disappointing... 150 gigs is a lot to be missing when your spending over a $120.Everything else is fine on the drive though.

i bought 5 drives from 2 lots for a 4-drive raid + hot spare. first drive was courteous and failed (tick, tick..) within a week. the second one took 4 months (this week). firmware is CC1H. on the plus side, seagate's turn around is pretty quick.i wouldn't dream of using one of these drives w/o redundancy.edit: oops.. just lost one of the replacement drives 1/9.3 from the other lot continue to chug along happily, tho, so could be a bad lot. but truly does show you should buy from several sources.

The packaging was nice and easy, the drive does what it needs to. Seagate Barraccudas are reliable drives, and the price was right for a boot drive. I recommend it for anyone who needs a new boot drive for a shiny new windows 7 installation. Do yourself a favor and buy a terabyte to store all of your files and back up your music.

Amazon dropped the price another $22 within the next week of my purchase and they don't have any price match guarantee or anything like that so I will think twice and shop around a LOT more before buying it from amazon from now on.

I bought two of these 2 years ago and they keep working just as good as they did from the beginning. I recently bought one more of these drives to build a mid-end computer and it did not let me down either. I am planning on buying one more again to build another low-end computer.Great hard drive overall.

The original 320 GB Western Digital hard drive in my iMac 2.8 stuffed it after only 14 months. I ordered this little baby to replace it. Installation of the drive is straightforward (assuming you know how to open the iMac), it is only a matter of moving the iMac specific mounting hardware and the temperature sensor from the original drive to the Seagate (make sure you have a complete set of small Torx drivers). The Mac OS had no problem recognizing the new drive. The drive is very quiet in this application and performance seems to be appreciably improved over the Western Digital drive (iPhoto and iTunes open and load faster).

I looked at many units, but went with what I have used for years. Seagate has beenmy choice for many years. Some of my older units have been in operation for close to ten years with little trouble. This unit was easily installed, formated, and in use in mere minutes. Great price for a great product. I recommend ths unit if you have similar needs.

After having one of these for just a few months (and just replacing it with a Western Digital) I advise you all to steer clear of them. They are noisy, lock up periodically and have an assortment of other problems that Seagate can't seem to fix. There are numerous other reviews on the Internet from unsatisfied customers. Save yourself a lot of frustration and buy a different drive.

added a second hd for my sons computer so we could install some of the games he received as gifts.this is perfect for extra storage. using it under win xp- after a simple format- it was ready to roll- works just fine- not noisy.It appears they use a special packaging to hold the hard drive in place in the box. good idea.remember when you buy oem hard drives- you do not get the little screws to hold them in place-also have a spare sata cable on hand for the install.

As I type this review, I'm copying the contents of my only Seagate 1.5TB to still be visible to an OS. The drive is clicking loudly, the copy is running painfully slow (2MB/s), and there is a good chance that I'll not be able to get all the data off before the drive completely fails.This is the fourth Seagate 1.5TB drive that I've owned and the last Seagate drive I'll purchase. Two of the 1.5TB were DOA, the other two failed after a few months. All were purchased at different times and from different vendors.In addition to the failure of the Seagate 1.5TB drives, since the beginning of the year, I've also lost a 500GB and three 320GB drives. All of these drives were Seagate drives, and none over a year old.My environment is clean (not dusty and I don't smoke). The computers are on UPS and should have pretty clean power. The machines don't get moved around. I have to assume that Seagate has really gone downhill in terms of reliability.I've slowly been switching over to Western Digital as the Seagate drives fail. So far, not a single problem with WD's 300GB VelociRaptors, 500GB Passport, 2TB MyBook, 500GB MyDVR, and 2TB Green drives... Knock on wood.

Just buy adapters for power and SATA to IDE or a SATA controller card and this will work fine in a computer that isn't SATA ready. Seems perfectly reliable and the speed is limited on my computer to the IDE speed so can't really say anything about that.Giving it 5 stars just because it's reliable and cheap for a lot of storage.
