  • + 1. Хорошие диски дешевые диски от Seagate

I bought two of these drives in January 2012; one from Amazon and one from Newegg. At the time, Newegg was having some issues about how they were shipping their OEM drives (wrapped in bubble wrap, but otherwise loose in the box), but I was glad to see that both drives arrived double-boxed, with the drive in an anti-static bag with plastic holders on each end to prevent the drive from bouncing around. I rate both retailers equal in that regard. The drives were purchased for a ReadyNAS Duo upgrade, so I did not do any benchmarking on a PC for speed. This model was one of just a few 2TB drives approved by Netgear to run in the ReadyNAS Duo. After verifying that the firmware was up to date on the drives, backing up the existing ReadyNAS drives, and doing the requisite upgrades to the ReadyNAS to handle the advanced format 2TB drives, both of these drives were placed into service.Since this operation was basically a new drive installation, with a new secondary drive as well, the first drive was inserted and the ReadyNAS did the setup work it needed to perform. I then inserted the second drive and gave it a chance to mirror the data on the first drive before reloading any additional data.Once the mirroring process was complete, I began to restore nearly 1TB of data back onto the ReadyNAS. This took some time, but there weren't any problems transferring thousands of large and small files alike. Here we are, over five months and 3700+ operating hours later (almost continuous operation save for a few power-down periods), and there haven't been any problems. No errors reported through the SMART tests, and I have not found any data corruption problems. The drives are running quietly relative to the fan in the ReadyNAS at 95/96 degrees F in a 77F room.Since I didn't do any benchmarking on these drives, I don't know how happy I would be with them in a desktop environment from a performance standpoint. However, after more than five months of continuous duty and no issues, I'm happy with their reliability so far. Given that I would be looking for performance over power-savings in a desktop, I'd look at Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200RPM 2 TB SATA 6 GB/s NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive and Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Internal Desktop Hard Drive - WD2002FAEX first for desktop data storage needs (the OS should go on an SSD, like the Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT128M4SSD2).

My digital life went into the proverbial turd bucket, when I tripped over my 70 pound boxer, and my open, running laptop and I hit the deck, while reading an article.Of course I lost months of accumulation, that I'll never get back. I had no backup plan. With several PC's in our household, Online cloud services didn't appeal to me, and since I was the proud owner of a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ with four 250g Seagates, I felt I could use it as a solution. The problem is that that horse already left the barn.... but that's another story.I bought Acronis Home Image 2011, and started to use it to back up my PC's. My capacity before the upgrade was 676 gigs, and based on how my backups were progressing, I knew I better start looking at upgrading my drives. I checked the READYNAS website and got their list of the latest 2TB drives that they certified and off I went shopping. The price per TB has come down. The last time I looked at the price of upgrading to 4 x 1TB, I remember it being around $450, so it was a pleasant surprise to see twice the capacity at a much lower price point. I choose the ST2000DL003's because of solid reviews, and my partiality to Seagate. Now for some technical observations, for those looking to upgrade their ReadyNAS NV+.My ReadyNAS NV+ unit originally shipped with four Seagate ST3250620AS 250g units. with is set up X-RAID, so with the redundancy, I had 676GB of usable space. These drives had only ~8,000 hours on them, and they have never given me any issues. So I'm sure I'll find them handy to have around...With Seagate touting the new ST2000DL003 drives as "Green", I decided to take some before and after power readings. The old drives idled consumed 29 watts, and while the drive were working the NAS consumed 52 watts at the power cord.ReadyNAS's touted X-Raid technology worked as advertised. I started with drive #1, and here is a typical log report for the four drives:Tue May 17 12:15:23 EDT 2011 Disk remove event occurred on SATA channel 1.Tue May 17 12:15:24 EDT 2011 Disk fail event occurred on SATA channel 1. If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead.Tue May 17 12:22:46 EDT 2011 Disk add event occurred on SATA channel 1.Tue May 17 12:22:56 EDT 2011 Disk initialization started. The estimated time of completion is 17 hour(s) and 39 minute(s), at which time you will be notified via email. You can also check the progress in Frontview in the Volumes -> RAID Settings tab. Please do not shutdown the system while the initialization is in progress.Tue May 17 17:45:49 EDT 2011 Disk initialization successfully finished.Tue May 17 17:45:49 EDT 2011 RAID sync started on volume C.Tue May 17 19:07:21 EDT 2011 RAID sync finished on volume C. The volume is now fully redundant. Then after 2 - 3 days of rolling the four drives in, the wrap up looked like this:Thu May 19 07:52:09 EDT 2011 The first stage of the in-place volume expansion is done. Please reboot the device to complete the volume expansion.Thu May 19 07:53:27 EDT 2011 System is up.Thu May 19 08:10:07 EDT 2011 Please close this browser session and use RAIDar to reconnect to the device. System rebooting...Thu May 19 08:10:08 EDT 2011 Rebooting device...Thu May 19 15:04:23 EDT 2011 Data volume has been successfully expanded to 5490 GB.The watt meter settled down to around 45 watts while the drives were active, and around 25 watts at idle.If you crave more room in you NAS, these drives at their great price point definitely fill the bill. The drives strike a good balance of lower power consumption, less noise and heat, and a fat buffer. Hope this helps!

I can't honestly evaluate the product as I never received the proper hard disk drive. I received a different model Seagate 2T drive and additionally, the drive I did receive was defective and slower than what I ordered. I hadn't realized I had the wrong item at first, I discovered that when I had problems and returned to my Amazon account to check the Deal-Stop return policy/proceedure for defective items and discovered the difference in Model number (only one digit was different). The drive did receive was model ST2000DL001 and was a lot slower but still 2T. Deal-Stops invoice had the correct Model and Serial Number for the drive I received.I had problems trying to install Windows 7 on the drive. Windows 7 returned an error saying it could not configure the drive. I assumed it was something I did at first, but could not get the drive loaded properly even with help from Microsoft support. I eventually downloaded software from Seagate to test and possibly repair the drive. When I first called Deal-Stop to return the drive they were not very co-operative told me it was under warrenty and I should send it to Seagate instead of return it. After I discovered the model number I received was different from what I ordered Deal-Stop became very co-operative. Because Deal-Stop had sent the wrong item, I couldn't send it to Seagate for repair/replacement and get what I ordered. Deal-Stop gave me a return Authorization at that point which expired within 15 days. I returned the drive re-paid the next day at my expence($14.27). The following day I recieved another email from Deal-Stop with a return UPS Label, too late for me to use. I called Deal-Stop and was told me they could not refund my UPS Charges since Amazon would not let them refund more than I had paid, even though they sent the wrong item. Deal-Stop also took a week longer than they said it would take to refund my money. As a result I still am without a new Hard Drive. And $14.27 poorer. I droped 2 stars for getting the wrong item and then 2 more for they way they handled the problems. My Advice to all is to FIRST double check the verify any item you receive is exactly as you ordered and make sure you get a pre-paid return label before returning something that is wrong or defective. Also, if you get hard drive, see if the manufacturer has test software to check it out completely, before wasting a week to load it then find any problems. Sometimes even brand new hard drives can be defective, because the firmware will load and pass a quick test.

I bought three of these at the same time and put them in a Synology cube station in a RAID5. I use that one unit as a home file server, media server, and pretty much all-around primary storage for my home with three PCs and a few media systems, some on a 1Gb LAN and some wireless. Hence, it gets plenty of activity from simultaneous clients on a regular basis. They perform great and the volume is over half full. I've run a few scans and SMART checks and found no errors. I can't find anything to complain about these, and will probably buy another at some point to fill the fourth slot in the system. It may not be a fair comparison, but I previously had another Synology cube station of a previous model and filled it with Western Digital drives of the time, mostly 320GB units. I lost about one a year during the 4+ years I had it, although thanks to RAID, I never lost any data. So, 1.5 years without losing one of these with similar or increased use is encouraging. I'd give these 5-stars except that I can't find anything particularly extraordinary about them, which is what I normally save that rating for.

I ordered this BRAND NEW 2 TB SATA 6GB/s Segate (GREEN) drive for a backup of all my valuable data. Some files would not copy over to the NEW drive because they were stuck on the old 1TB drives. So after starting over with the copy proecess several times (3 maybe 4) I decided to Move (copy/delete) the files to the new drive. That way I would know which files were getting stuck and were having problems. Well I managed to get all the files over to the NEW Backup Drive from SEAGATE. These files included thousands and thousands of my .pdf books, music files converted from LP, cassette and cd as well as purchased and downloaded, and business documents, and finally pictures of all my trips, vacations with the family, Europe Hooneymoon, kids growing up, and pictures of my deceased mother, etc. 30 years of data. After getting it all over to the new drive.... it CRASHED! CRASHED! before I could get the data back to the original drives for normal usage. Error said "Drive must be formated before it can be used." I'm going to use SPINRITE 6.x to try to recover my files. Say a prayer... not for me,but for SEAGATE, so that they can stop ruining the memories that people work hard to collect and save.FOLLOW UP POST:I contacted Seagate about recovering my data:WATCH OUT: NEW SEAGATE DRIVE DIES AFTER TWO WEEKS. THEY CHARGE YOU FOR DATA RECOVERY. $99.00IS YOUR DATA WORTH SAVING $30.00 ON A CHEAP DRIVE?They deleted my complaint as posted on their Facebook page. They deleted the post but not before I made a copy of it. They are some real low lifes. Buy this drive at your own peril. Don't go through this pain for $30.00 saving.I talked to a Supervisor: Mark (Employee ID: 434468). He told me that the company charges for the software, and that data recovery is expensive if I wanted to go somewhere else. So, if I wanted my memories back, that was the price. I told him I would use Spinrite and never buy anything from them again, and return the drive after I recovered my data. He was fine with that. I agree that $99.00 is cheap to recover 30 years of data, if the drive was out of warranty, but it was only two weeks old! Two Weeks! Just enough time to get your data on to it and crash. And they still want to charge you for selling defective products. I really hate companies that act like this.

My first drive was a 20 meg Seagate drive which cost more than this one. Sadly, I bought one less than six months ago, and it failed with less than 3100 hours on it (from SMART).But what prompted me to write the review was the fact that the warranty-*REPLACEMENT* drive is also junk. The original was manufactured in China, the replacement (refurbished) in Korea. Interestingly the refurbished drive shows 0 hours in SMART, so evidently they are able to reset the counters. So, replacement drive is failing after less than 48 hours. "The device, \Device\Harddisk2\D, has a bad block."Caveat emptor. This was supposed to be a RAID-1 companion to a WD drive:amazon dot com/RE4-Enterprise-Hard-Drive-WD2003FYYS/dp/B002XW44QYI am extremely impressed w/ the WD drive. I'm currently doing a robocopy of 1.5 T of data, and the WD is significantly faster than the Seagate (plus, the WD doesn't lock up & throw a bunch of errors). chkdsk on the wd was an order of magnitude faster than the equivalent Seagate drive.Over on newegg, I see similar complaints about Seagate's plummet, esp. wrt their "rebranding" of Samsung. If you're about to purchase a Samsung drive assuming you'll get the same quality, beware, since Seagate bought them out.

I used to only buy Seagate drives, and at the time most came with 5 year warranty, the best in the biz. But now most are 3 year warranty, and I have had multiple drives fail shortly after the 3 year mark. They will not work out any kind of replacement or discount once past the warranty, so I am essentially out $150 plus for "top of the line" drives. Based on my recent experience I am now using a competitor (Toshiba), hoping they are better. So far their drives are quieter, and performance in line with Seagate. The ONLY thing I still like about Seagate is their utilities for testing drives that have errors and have failed. But I would much rather have a drive that doesn't fail, and not need to use that software. So I guess their priorities are in the wrong place.

After moving around about 5TB of data recently, I noticed a loud, obnoxious clicking noise coming from my Probox 4-bay enclosure, and fearing for my data I removed each hard drive and tested them on my desk to find out what was wrong. I've had 2 SG drives fail before and lose a significant amount of data, 0 WDs, so I've been biased for awhile and figured it was the SG drives clicking again. WRONG. My 2 2TB SG drives were running flawlessly and barely made any noise at all, no matter what I did to them. I then tested my 2 1TB WD Caviar Black drives (considered to be WDs best and most reliable drives) and BOTH of them were much louder than the SGs when seeking for data, one was even audible down the hall and in the next room. I would partially attribute this to the 7200rpm speed, but that only explains them being louder than the SGs, which spin slower, the noise difference between the two WDs is unacceptable and the louder one is getting replaced soon. Now that I'm considering changing my allegiance, I have some advice to offer potential buyers of ANY brand of hard drive. Always make a backup, of your backup. Drives are incredibly cheap now, so get 2. Get them both from different manufacturers and see which one works better for you. Once you test them both, if they both pass, delete one and use it for something else, sell it, or just keep it in your closet for an emergency.EDIT: Forgot to mention, by Caviar Black killer, I do NOT mean performance-wise. Obviously a 7200rpm drive is "better" than a 5400 or 5900, but when you run most everything from a SSD, spindle speed becomes basically irrelevant and size and reliability are your biggest concerns. Also if you store huge files, like BD/DVD rips, a slower spinning drive is better. Google it for a better explanation if you're curious.

I have just had ANOTHER Seagate drive failure!! This drive was a replacement for a new drive that failed after 3 months. A surprise is that the Seagate replacement drives have all been REBUILT drives - not new drives, evidently they have a lot of returns and this is a good way to get rid of them. To be fair, the replacement drive lasted twice as long as the initial new drive - 6 months!! Prior to using Seagate originally I used Maxtor drives that were almost "bulllet proof", but then Seagate bought Maxtor and I continued on using Seagate drives, something I am very sorry for today. The 3 year warranty that Seagate offers will probably be reduced by them to a more believable 6 month warranty I would suspect. Very disapointed and disgusted.I am not complaining over the failure of one drive..more than half of the Seagate drives on our 14 systems have failed within an unreasonable time frame. All our systems have large power supplies and have UPS protection because dependability is key to our operation. There is absolutely no reason for these early failures! Incidently, before you buy a Samsung hard drive you might want to check who really manufactured the drive as I have been told that Seagate produces some of the, or all, of the Samsung drives. As a solution, I have started phasing out ALL the Seagate hard drives on all of our systems and will NEVER use another Seagate product. I am not a particular fan of Western Digital, but they now offer a 5 year warranty on some of their better drives - a good investment in my opinion. In the past Weatern Digital had been accused of knowingly shipping drives that had bad components, but that was long ago, so I'm hoping for the better now.

I travel a lot and might only use this machine a few days a month. Next time I booted up it would lock up but after several tries I could boot and run and access files. But had trouble getting to all files and did not remove them until to late and now the drives locks up the system anytime it is connected and the files are lost and can not access them. It now set in a drawer waiting until Seagate admits a problem and comes up with a repair.Might want to use a different brand for large storage.Paul

This is a good hard-drive. My only complaint is that because of it's architecture, it throws incorrect error's to my Netgear NAS. It is a known issue, but an irritating one. My NAS sends me an email every time this happens and fills up my inbox with errors that according to the manufacture, do not mean anything. I have run a diagnostic on these drives and there is nothing wrong with them so no warranty on them. Just drives me nuts with telling me they are dropping data.

Seagate charges for advanced replacement. I have NEVER had a hard drive fail before so for these all to fail within 12 months, I was very let down by the company. The only positive note is that I can say the return process was painless even though it did cost like $15 to do the replacement.Find something of better quality like WDC or Hitachi. I cheaped out with these and in the end, it bit me.

I installed this drive in my MacPro as additional space/backup in early April, 2012. It received minimal to light usage, with files totalling probably less than 5% of the capacity being copied over periodically. After about a month, my system took an extremely long time to boot up and then the drive was listed as unreadable. I used Disk Utility and it said the Seagate was damaged and needed to be reformatted. I lost a very small amount of data, as the majority of what was on it was backed up elsewhere.I reformatted the whole thing, but was cautious about using it too much, as I feared something else would go wrong. Today, I realized I haven't paid attention to it in a while, and looked for it, only to realize it will now not mount at all! It is completely dead and won't appear in Disk Utility, System Profiler, etc. I pulled it out and reinstalled it in the bay and still nothing.Dead as a doornail, after virtually no use.Am in the process or arranging its return to Seagate. Terrible product. I saw some of the warnings in comments here, but thought I would chance it as it would not be used for critical information. This was my mistake as it has still been a hassle and complete waste of time/money. I've not had a drive fail in 20+ years with other equipment.Do not buy this garbage!

Let's be honest, there are not a lot of things to review when it comes to an internal hard drive. The main things are if they work and if are stable. I ordered four of these for a NAS device (the Synology DiskStation 4-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS411J (White) if you're interested) and one of the drives was dead on arrival. Amazon replaced it quickly and the system has been running for 10 months with no drive problems what so ever. The speeds I'm getting are exactly what would be expected with the NAS device running in RAID 5. I'm getting about 30MB/s writing to the drive and 60MB/s reading from it which is more than fast enough to stream HD content.I'll update this review if any of the other drives go bad, but as of now all the tests show perfectly working drives. I'd definitely recommend these drives.

Seagate tried to cheat me on the warranty, so please make sure you check that while you still have the box / receipt. It worked great for about 4 months and then disappeared. Seems they have a similar firmware issue to the 7200.11 series. Seagate insists this isn't so, but data recovery firms tell me otherwise. I saved money on this drive, but it's going to cost me in the end. I'd suggest you try a manufacturer that knows how to write firmware and will correct their obvious errors.

I would like to give seagates lineup of green drives some much earned love. I have 5 of these and I had them in a 5 bay Qnap ts-509 pro and for the last 3 years they have performed flawlessly. The thing that makes my review worth reading is the fact that this nas has traveled the world with me. I lived in japan for about a year then deployed to Afghanistan for 7 months then back to America. All I did for travel was take the drives out and put them in a Duffel bag with bubble wrap. I do not need to Comment on the preformance due to the other 100+ reviews that clearly state these drives outshine. I commend Seagate for deciding to move from 5 to 3 year warrantys, THEY ARE SAVING YOU MONEY. For small businesses a 3 year warranty is better then most computer components now and days. And statistically if they don't fail in three years then they will at about 6 so as long as the users do not abuse them you should be good. I am no fan favorite and have had every brand of hard drive and i strongly recommend these drives to anyone looking for the perfect NAS drive. I have 2 raids with these and never had a disk failure in the 3 years running. Do not hesitate buy the Seagate you will not be disappointed!

Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST2000DL003.I bought this HD Brand NEW right here from Amazon, I've rarely used it...Not even a Year yet and it went bad on me...it started to make a funny sound...I called Seagate they told me to get all my files out of this HD (good and free service) but that doesn't help, it's good for 3 years warranty, so I sent it back to Seagate...now I'm waiting to get a Refurbished one back, (not a NEW one) and they told me if this one goes bad too it's not their falt they will not replace it again...I should have bought some other brand.

I bought a total of 10 of these Seagate 2TB LP drives and after minimal use in my mediacenter already 2/10 failed miserably. What's even worse is the Seagate warranty return. If you have to return multiple drives you need to login but you can only create an account if you are a reseller, OEM or other kind of company. I had to return two of these and another Seagate Momentus 2 1/2 inch notebook drive which was DOA. The reliability of these terabyte drives is in the crapper. There is no quality control. If you do not care about losing everything on these drives anytime within the first year, go ahead with Seagate. I will stay away from them as they have become the Yugo of hard drives. The fact that Seagate has been cutting back on the warranty period from 5 to 3 and from 3 to 2 or 1 year on some other drives shows you that they have no confidence in their own product.Amazon review system needs an update. Besides selecting for stars, there should also be a way to eliminate reviews that have been written after less than 6 months or 1 year of ownership. 95% of hardrives work well within the first month (when most people write their premature and glorious reviews). I want to hear from customers that used the drive for over one year and see how many are still happy about their purchase.

I've had this hard drive running for about a year now (since July 2011) in my gaming computer. It's being used as a data storage drive, so doesn't get as much use as a boot drive does, but I've been quite satisfied with its performance. I am using it with an ASUS P8P67 MoBo, which supports Sata II 6GB/s, and have it and a different hard drive connected to the SATA II connectors on the MoBo. Hard drive transfer rates are easily the bottleneck in my system (I'm running a Core i5 2500K), and transfer between this and my OS drive (which is probably as fast as transfers to/from stuff on my computer are going to get) happens at about 110 MB/s for a single, large file. It tends to be slower when you're transferring many small files (duh). That's pretty quick, enough so for me, and destroys my USB 2.0 and 3.0 transfer rates with ease (~35 and ~55 MB/s, respectively).Anyway, so far reliable. I'll let you (and Seagate, believe me) know if it fails.

I've owned about 12 Seagate drives since 2001 for personal use and bought dozens for my clients. This company makes a quality product. The quality of their product, matched with their fantastic warranty makes these a no brainer for me. You pay a little more than you would for the 'bargain brand' of the hour, but don't be fooled. Spend the extra ~$10 and get the seagate.

I purchased two of these to expand my storage capacity on my FreeNAS home server. I had a pair of Western Digital 7200rpm drives, and added these Seagate 5900rpm drives to the mix. I was hopeful that with 4 drives in the array the speed difference wouldn't be too noticeable. After rebuilding my volume, I had a 6TB container running RAIDZ1 (equivalent to RAID5) with decent transfer speeds. The limitation for me was definitely my network interface. I consistently can stream files over the network at 85Mb/s and the drives are more than capable of keeping up.Running local tests I find that with my combination of drives and motherboard, I'm able to see sustained write speeds that fluctuate between 900Mb/s and 1.03Gb/s. I have a feeling these could be a touch higher if the Seagate drives were 7200rpm units, but for my needs (backing all my home PCs up to the NAS, storing music & pictures) I'm more than happy. The drives also seem to run a little cooler than my WD drives which makes sense because they spin a little slower. For the money (I caught them on sale) I highly recommend. Drives prices are still too high due to the flooding in the Asian tech markets, but if you need lots of storage these are hard to beat. I would stagger them with another brand, and run them in a mirrored or RAID5 (or 1+0) configuration to reduce the risk of losing data to a bad drive or even a bad batch of drives.

I bought this hard drive for a 4-bay NAS as it was on the hard drive compatibility list. It worked well for 1 year and 1 month. It is now dead and I'm debating if the warranty claim to get a refurbished drive is worth it.I'm planning on going with a Western Digital 2 TB WD SATA III Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive, Red WD20EFRX [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] hard drive since it's going in a NAS when they come back in stock.Update: I filed the warranty claim with Seagate (hard drive is still well under warranty) and they responded that my replacement is being delayed due to low inventory.

I have bought/sold Seagate drives for 25 years. I have recommended Seagate for most of those years. I am in the storage business and have a lot of direct experience with drives. The problem I am discovering is a greatly reduced reliability in Seagate 1.5 and 2TB disks. I currently have about a dozen 2TB Seagates in active use. 7 of them are beginning to fail, in under 4,000 hours of use. These are disks which were burned in by certifying them for about 3 days with an intensive read/write pattern, to eliminate early failure disks. In the general disk population, I have also seen a high failure rate. This is unacceptable.Google performed a study using over 100,000 disks a few years back. Google found statistical differences in failure rates between manufacturers, that they did not publish. They also noted that "enterprise" drives did not result in longer lifespans. They found NO correlation between heavy duty or light duty use in failure. What Google did report was that a handful of SMART parameters could be used to predict drives that would soon fail. Among these are reallocated sectors. Once a drive begins reallocating, they generally fail within 6 months or less. There are SMART utilities which are starting to implement this knowledge and alerting users to predicted failures. For a long time, Seagate was the premium brand of hard drives, along with Hitachi. They may still be. However, this failure rate on the 1.5 and 2TB drives, in addition to the major firmware flaw on the 1.5TB drives (Many customers lost data on the 1.5TB drives, where drives suddenly failed from a firmware flaw), makes me very cautious on Seagate now.I am recommending Hitachi for now, they will cost a little more, but until more data is in, be alert if Seagates are installed and perhaps avoid them in servers and mission critical installations. I have no data yet on the 3TB drives.

I bought 2 of these with some hesitation, but so far they work great.I'm getting good read/write speeds despite modest 5900 RPM, which my biggest worry. So far they work well and are a good deal.Much faster than my older SATA II 7200 RPM drives (~ 4-5 year old drives).I * AM * using SATA III cables and SATA III capable ports on my motherboard, and believe that makes a difference in performance.I also used one of the drives in a USB 3.0 setup for a few days and thought itwas as fast, if not faster.I don't have any scientific setup or bench marking, I'm just doing a lot of transfer of data from old drives to these new ones, 4 TB worth, so they are getting a good work out.I'm only giving 4 stars b/c I've only had then about 2 weeks. If they keep working for years I'd give 5.Happy customer at this point.

I got this drive to put in an external drive holder for movies and tv shows to watch while on deployment. I've only had the drive for a few days, but so far it powers up and seems to run normally. I had no trouble formatting it for use with OSX Lion and Time Machine. However, it is horribly SLOW!! Probably half as fast as my old 160 GB WD Caviar Blue that I was using previously. I didn't think I was someone who would care about (or even notice) drive speed that much, but I was wrong. I also notice that it runs quite a bit hotter than the WD, but that's likely because it takes so long. If you're not planning to transfer very large files often (like multiple seasons of TV shows; around 20+ GB), this drive will probably work very well for you.

...certainly the true test of a hard drive comes over time, and ultimately, time will tell the largest story about this drive. However, installed as the primary non-volatile storage on my current desktop machine, it is a steady performer. Runs quietly, and no issues have shown up in any of the SMART and third-party diagnostic tools I've used.In my desktop, this model joins its predecessor from Seagate, which has been running flawlessly for almost two years. While only time will reveal its long term reliability, works great out of the box and sustains my confidence in Seagate drives.

I purchased three on 29Sep11 and had one of the three fail on 12Jan12. That is very poor reliability. According to Seagate's specifications on the ST2000DL003 model, the Mean Time Between Failure is 750k hours, and 0.34% annual failure rate. After looking at the other reviews here, it appears as though this drive suffers a pretty high infant mortality rate and potentially enough to invalidate the Reliability specifications on Seagate's website. I was lucky to buy the drive prior to the 2011 Thailand Flooding, so the price ($75) was about 1/2 of what it is now. I would certainly not recommend buying this drive for anything more than $75, if I were to recommend it at all.To RMA the drive, unless you pay a fee for Advanced Replacement, you must follow *very strict* guidelines from Seagate (including the vendor of packaging you use) for shipping the drive back. This is the note that they provide in the instructions for RMA: "In event you do not currently retain any of the suggested packaging in this document there are options to purchase packaging provided below. "Seagate does not sell packaging materials separate from our products, neither does Seagate authorize nor recommend any specific thirty party vendor's packaging materials or services. The company that provides packaging materials is: "Reflex Packaging, Inc."

I purchased 5 of these along with Synology DS1511+ NAS from Amazon back in April, 2011 for my home. I can't say about how they perform as internal drives for a desktop or in an USB/eSATA external enclosure, but I can definitely state that they work great as NAS drives. I have these configured as RAID6, which means you can lose up to 2 disks and still have your volume intact (but at point you won't have fault tolerance). The NAS I got itself is a high-efficient unit, and combined with these green drives it definitely consumes less power than the two servers that I replaced...and I have 5.44TB of fault tolerant storage accessible from my 10 PCs/Macs.I saw other reviewers commenting about them not being "high-performance" drives. That is correct, this drive was never intended to be used as your primary drive for your system. If you're looking for a high-performance drives, you should definitely look for 7,200/10,000rpm drives with 16/32MB cache. However, when used in a RAID configuration, these drives will deliver high-performance with overall reduced power consumption. In my NAS I was able to sustain around 160MB/S throughput writing to NAS over gigabit network (and even faster reading from it). There's nothing low-performance about these drives when used in a proper setting. The drive is also quiet. Standing next to my NAS, I can't hear any drive noise even with 5 drives side-by-side.Bottom line, don't purchase drives purely based on price and capacity. You don't buy Prius for high-performance, why expect high-performance from a "Green" drive? Identify what you're going to do with it, then look for qualifying drives for best result. I would have never purchased this to be used in my desktop (for performance) and neither should you.

Ordered and installed this drive in a Readynas Ultra 2 which had come with the identical drive installed in the first drive bay. Started out fine, but after ten days it started giving me SMART warnings that failure was imminent. The drive won't pass a SMART self-assessment because the seek error rate is abysmal and getting worse. Took advantage of Amazon's exchange policy and they are sending me a replacement (thanks to Amazon). I have also taken the step of purchasing even a third drive to act as a spare in case I have similar problems in the future. It is unfortunate that hard drives of all brands seem to have increasing numbers of failed drives. Incresing complexity, manufacturing woes (floods in Thailand) and competitive pressures are driving all of this...but that shouldn't be an excuse. The industry seriously needs to take a step back and evaluate their business model that produces devices so critical to business growth but prone to such high rates of failure. I hope my next drive is a keeper...I really do. Maybe it is time for Segate to pull some of their manufacturing back to the USA...as many others are doing.
