This drive is awesome, it is the quietest 2TB drive I've ever heard (or not heard rather!). Whisper quiet and it doesn't even get warm to the touch. I'm using it in a external docking station and I love it.Highly recommend to anyone, extremely fast access and transfer, whisper quiet and doesn't even break a sweat what more could you ask for in a drive!

I bought five of these HDD's to match a Synology DS1511. After one month of use, I have no complains.I'm using previous Seagate 2TB LP (ST32000542AS) for over a year now. And, I was never very pleased by the older model: it make some strange noises that scared in the beginning. All four ST32000542AS units that I have do the same strange "click" noise. Googling I discovered that this annoying noise is normal for the first LP generation. This is a problem when you have 5 of then working together in a NAS.So, the first improve I noticed in STL2000DL003 is the quiet operation. Then I made some benchmarks using HD Tach:- Compared with ST32000542AS (firmware updated to CC35) the unit is faster in average read (113MB/s against 97.1MB/s) and uses less CPU (2% against 3%), but has worst Random access (17.4ms against 14.2ms).- Compared with WD20EARS: the unit is faster in average read (113MB/s against 100.6MB/s) and same CPU use (2%), but has worst in Random access (17.4ms against 16.2ms).Anyway, it's a nice HDD for the price.Other Thoughts: Some people do prefer WD hard drives, but in my experience there is no advantage in this particular brand. In the past I need to use worldwide RMA (from Brazil, to be specific) from WD and from Seagate. More than one time for both companies. Seagate was always fast and painless: no more than one week between send the defective unit and receive a new one (again: outside USA!).But with WD was a nightmare every time! More than one month to receive back the same unit, but refurbished. Guess what? The defective unit that they refurbished and sent me back has become defective again... Another "over a month" waiting for a solution. This happened more than one time, first with external HDD then with internal HDD (green caviar)! Since these events, I never bought a WD again and I don't recommend to anyone.So, in my opinion and my experience, the Seagate costumer service is another highlight for this HDD.

I purchased two of these drives to expand my raid-1 from 1TB to 2TB. I removed drive 2 (HDD2) from the unit, and replaced it with one of the new Seagate drives. It rebuilt in 3 1/2 hours. I moved that drive to the drive 1 slot (HDD1), and put the other new Segate drive in slot 2 (HDD2). After approx. 2 hrs., the raid unit was showing a red led for drive 2, and sent a message to the screen that it could not continue with the rebuild. I pulled HDD2, and tried to format it again. The PC (iMac i7) could not see the drive, so I tried my MS machine (Windows 7), and although it showed a drive as RAW - NO FORMAT, I could not do anything with it. The platters were spinning, but I never heard the heads move.The drives are exceptionally quiet, and even after the one drive ran for 3 1/2 hours, it was much cooler than the 1T WD drive. However, the 2 X 1T WD drives haven't failed in two years.I've returned the drive to Amazon, and they, as always, are sending a replacement unit while I box up the defective one for return.I've been ordering from Amazon since the mid 90's, and I have never had a single problem with shipping or returns.*** I received the replacement disk, and installed it in the raid box, and it rebuilt with no problems encountered. These two disks must disapate significantly less than prior disks. The two drives ran for 11 hrs. copying data, and were still cool (just above room temp.) when the re-build finished.These drives will be in constant use on a video production system, so I will modify this review if there is some change to report. I changed the rating to 4, as I am very impressed with the noise level and low heat generation of these drives.

Should have heeded the warnings. Seagate used to be a good brand, but no longer for me. Drive was flakey from day one and I can no longer trust it for backups. It seems to have problems spinning up or too many bad sectors. Warranty is pointless, as I'm not sending drive with confidential data on it off to strangers. Dead in less than a month and 10 hours of use. As other reviewers have noted, this drive "beeps" when it is going to act up, so be warned.Update: before trashing this drive, I moved it to an enclosure with 50% more amps. With this extra power, drive now seems like it might be an OK backup drive. It is counter-intuitive to me that a "green" drive takes more power at times, but that seems to be the case. Other reviewers have noted the idiosyncratic power requirements of this model.

I just bought this Seagate 2TB hard drive after seeing great reviews of the product. I was going to use it as a back-up drive for my computer. I bought a hard drive enclosure for it and hooked it up via eSATA. For just shy of two days, the hard drive worked great. File transfers were fast, and it sounded very quiet, much quieter than my other hard drives.Well, by the second day, when I went to use my computer, I noticed the hard drive was making intermittent beeping sounds (in 1-second intervals). The computer no longer registered the hard drive. Other than the beeping sound, I didn't hear any disk spinning.Because I was using an external enclosure for the drive, I tried the following to rule out reasons other than hard drive failure: (1) I disconnected the eSATA cable but kept the power supply to the enclosure going. Still beeped. (2) I installed the hard drive into a different enclosure to rule out a faulty enclosure. Still beeped. (3) I installed a different hard drive into the enclosure I used. Still beeped. (NOTE: I didn't install the hard drive in my computer because I have a slimline desktop, I had no extra hard drive bays, and swapping the existing one was too cumbersome).I explained my methodology of testing to a Seagate Technical support rep, and he agreed that the hard drive had failed.Anyway, I am very disappointed, obviously, since the hard drive lived long enough just for me to back up ALL my files before it died. Now I have to return it to Amazon without being able to properly wipe my drive.I have purchased Seagate drives before without problems, and I know hard drives can fail at any time, but it's difficult to overlook the fact that it took less than 2 days for this unit to do so. It definitely makes me think twice about purchasing a Seagate drive again. On the other hand, if it didn't fail, I actually think I would have really liked this hard drive!

I got two of these at the local store (sorry Amazon) for $69.99 Retail Box, not OEM (i.e. bare drive) and I got a very good surprise as the box states Sata II and 32MB cache however the drives are in fact Sata III and 64MB cache which, for the price, is awesome as they also come with a 5 years warrenty. Also they came with the latest firmware CC32 (that you can also find here [...]) which was a nice thing.Windows 7 x64 recognized the drives right away and was able to format them on my Gigabyte AMD based motherboard using SB750 chipset in RAID mode.As you can store a lot of data you sure don't want to loose everything if a drive dies, hence the RAID 1 or 10 would be a good option. I'm always affraid of RAID 5 for drives that are not meant for RAID from the manufacturer.Nonetheless, I started to build a RAID 10 for my NAS server (I'm using the free Starwind iSCSI NAS) and I was able to create a RAID 10 using two of these Seagate drives and 2 of the Hitachi Coolspin 3TB. As the drives are different capacity and speed I thought it would have been an issue at some point but the AMD RaidXpert took care of everything and seems happy with the configuration. Also I get around 330MB Read/Write in RAID 10 which is pretty good for Green Drives.I'll update this review after weeks of usage to see how they behave over time.So far so good. I'm transfering data

I ordered 4 of these drives for a NAS unit and took delivery of them on June 15th, 2012. As of June 30th 2 out of 4 drives have failed. One lasted all of 4 days. The other managed a whopping 15 days. So far both failures have been under Amazon's 30 day return window and returns/exchanges have been handled promptly. I've not suffered any data loss on the NAS, but I'm very nervous that these drives were a waste of money.

I never knew modern day Hard-drives failed SO FAST! I've had this product for barely 3 months in my NAS and it no longer boots up!I bought this drive to use in my Synology NAS as my primary data store at home -- I had spend hours transferring 10+ yrs of personal photos, videos and my entire music collection. I was finally getting happy with the way my music played seamlessly from my wifi-player and they way my photos showed up on my TV through other devices.My use of the harddrive on the NAS has been 'light' by most standards. I used it for about 1-1.5 hrs a day and the harddrive would be turned off during weeknights and weekdays.One fine day, not too long into my 'happy' home setup, to my utter shock - I noticed that my NAS started beeping, implying it was unable to boot up ... because the harddrive had crashed!!!I had thought Seagate to be a respectable company making quality products but unfortunately this wasn't the case in this case -- and this learning turned out to be at the expense of some valuable data.I guess the lesson I take away is: (a) I'm not buying a Seagate harddrive again. (b) It doesn't matter which Harddrive one buys, its important to have a backup routine. (c) If one has a NAS (like mine) that accepts 2+ Harddrives, it's worthwhile spending some extra money and building some redundancy (RAID).I hope this helps other buyers.

I run a data recovery company and seeing how these hard drives are packaged is a disgrace. This must have been the first time someone packaged a hard drive as there was no padding at ALL on the bottom of the hard drive. Additionally the hard drive could move freely back and forth. If your sending out hard drives make sure you package these items with appropriate padding on each side of the drive since they are extremely fragile. The hard drive should NOT move in the package.I asked for overnight shipping on the first drive and they were good to get it out the following day of my return however the next drive was DOA as well and poorly packaged like the previous one!!! Whoever is at the packing department of this company is making the manufacturer and this vendor look bad. Get them in line and a lot of these negative reviews will start to disappear.

It's slow and it's maybe not the most reliable, but I have an SSD cache and backups, so my priority was max storage for minimum money, and this fit the bill. I haven't had any problems with it.

The drive's warranty information is NOT 3-years as Amazon lists. It's only 2 years. In fact, it's only 1 years and 8 months based on the serial number I provided.I have to send Seagate the Amazon's receipt in order for the warranty information to update to the correct 2 year length (they will NOT do 3 years).Avoid this drive if you're worried about warranty!

I've been using the 2T version of the drive for over 6 months with no problems. I use it to backup my main drive. It seems to be faster than I would have expected for a 5900 RPM drive.

Worked excellently with my Netgear readynas ultra 2.Its very quiet, and the price on amazon was way lower than other sites.The hard drive came by itself on a box with a static bag.No cables or screws are included, but hey! who doesnt have a box full of those?

Good warranty. There are now only a few main companies who make hard drives so they don't have to compete any longer and are take there warranties from 5 yrs or 3 yrs to 1 yr which is horrible. This had a 3 yr when I purchased it and that could change. Drive works great so far. I only had this for a few months.

I bought 3 of these drives for a small business NAS (Synology ds212j).2 drives were set up with RAID 1 mirror, the 3rd drive was just a replacement in case 1 of the other 2 failed.Within one month, 1 of the active drives was reporting back drive errors.I'll order another as a back up for now, but hopefully Seagate's warranty will replace it.It's probably just bad luck, but felt it's important to publicly document the issues so the customer can be aware.

These are great drives so far. 6 months in and they are still quiet and cool (relatively). They would have received 5 stars, but I had to return one that was DOA. Exchange was easy and fine, no questions asked. Well I should add that the DOA was from another company that has one of Easter's symbol in their name and are New - Anywho, Amazon meets or beats their prices anyway. The ones from Amazon have been 100% great. Love these drives!

I bought two of these drives for my new NAS and one for a new PC i built. It is still pretty fast despite it not being 7200 RPM. I beat on my NAS every day because I backup multiple PC's daily and I also do a lot of downloading. The drive has held up very well. The only issue i had is the way Amazon packaged the drive. There was nothing in the box to cushion the drive. It was poorly packaged. I bought the same drive from another online store and they packaged it very well. Amazon is usually good about shipping items but i think someone fell asleep at the wheel. Thankfully the drive has not failed yet and hopefully it doesn't.

I have had three of these hard drives in my computer. The first one failed, then the second one failed, the third one did not fail, but was very slow when starting programs.The cursor would have the moving circle (which indicates the drive is searching) next to it any time you started a program. It would take on the average of 10 seconds before receiving any response. In addition, the entire screen will freeze for a few seconds randomly, including when a program is running. Seeing that the computer (late model Dell) has 2 processors, this should not be happening.See this article to read more about this problem.[...]The model in my computer is 2 TB, 7200.I have replaced it with a "Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive". For the record, they are sold on Amazon.This drive works perfectly. 5 stars for Western Digital.If a "0 star" rating existed, the Seagate Barracuda would be highly deserving of it.

I put these in my cart for a RAID system; upon checkout I found that Amazon removed all but one. Assuming it was my error I tried to purchase more, only to find out that it is limit 1 to a customer.1 drive is useless. There is no, clear or otherwise, marking on the product page indicating a limit. I just paid 28$ more, and was offered a 15$ credit. This is after wasting time trying to figure out why and then waiting on the phone to have the support person figure it out.The worst part is that they will arrive late, because it took too long to put in the more expensive order.Good job Amazon.

We picked up two of these to run inside our network attached storage drive. I had read online that there can be issues with drive spin-up and data retrieval. I can certainly see where comments like that came from. The drives are built to automatically spin down after a certain period of inactivity. This is smart, because it saves power, heat and wear on the motor. However, the first time I access the drive after not using it for a while (letting the drive spin down), there's a few second delay (over my network). It's not a horrible lag, but is certainly enough to be noticed.However, the drives have performed wonderfully to this point. They're very quiet, run cool (just over 100 degrees F in an enclosure), and haven't had an error or issue yet. After two months, I'm very happy with the purchase. I certainly could have purchased drives at two or three times the cost of these Seagate models that would have eliminated that start-up lag, but I'm just trying to store family photos and files, and the drive does a great job at that. And it's fast enough to play HD video back out over the network once it spins up.If you need server-grade results, buy a server-grade hard drive. If you just need to store a large amount of data in your home environment for a fantastic price, this is an excellent option.

I must admit that I'm a fan of Seagate. My experience is that they're cheap, quiet and reliable. The one or two Western Digital drives I've bought have been noticeably louder. I bought this one to use as a backup for the cooking videos my wife produces. So far (I installed it 2 weeks ago), it has worked exactly expected and matches my past experience. Installation was easy and I haven't noticed any performance issues (though the main bottleneck is the 100Mb connection between my wife's machine and my Linux box). Would definitely buy again!

Like any other product, it is not perfect. Here are some PROs and CONs:.Pro1. Seagate is the only manufacturer that has a 5-year warranty on their high-end and larger capacity hard drives.2. From actual experience dating back to the 1980s, I have less problems with this brand. When this company built its units in America, the products were durable and reliable - they lasted beyond the warranty.When manufacturing was shipped to Malaysia and Thailand, the life span became much shorter, and defects were very common. To avoid losses because of too many returns, the firm altered its warranty policy...Cons1. The 5-year warranty is not a true 5-year warranty. In a 5-year period, the manufacturer replaces the original drive that becomes defective. The replacement is a refurbished that usually breaks down within 3-12 months. Because this second drive has a different serial number and is not new, it does not have a warranty.. The fallacy of this policy is this. Assuming your new drive goes bad within a month, Seagate replaces it with a refurb. If the second goes bad within another month, there are no more replacements because the 5-year warranty does not transfer over to the second drive. As a result, you really have a two-month warranty.

This is my fifth ST2000DL003 drive. They seem to work okay. I use them for monthly backups.Shipping a hard drive in a static bag at the bottom of a 7x10x3" box, then covering it with air pillows is not the recommended packaging for a hard drive.For example, Seagate's RMA Packaging instructions:"Enclose each drive in an ESD (electrostatic discharge) bag, in an anti-static plastic shell (SeaShell) or anti-static bubble wrap.Secure each unit in 2 inch-thick foam rubber in a corrugated box. Do not use popcorn, peanuts, bubble wrap or newspaper. If packaging more than one drive, use a separate container for each drive."Running this drive through the usual badblocks test, before I put it to use.

I have had good success with seagate hard drives... until now. I bought this Green Drive and it was really cool. That is until it died on me. And, to make matters worse, it died six days after the return period with amazon had ended. So, now I am stuck with a $130 paperweight. I would recommend that you NOT purchase this particular hard drive. I have two 1.5 TB seagate hard drives in my system that have been in use for more than a year without any problems.

I've had two of these Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drives [ST2000DL003] for 3 weeks now. They are installed in a brand new Synology DS-411+II RAID. My review is in two parts: Product itself and Amazon's packaging.PRODUCT: 5 starAfter 3 weeks, the drives are still very reliable and fairly quiet. The 5900 RPM speed is a very nice feature at the $69.99 price point. I have been so pleased that I have gone ahead and ordered a 3rd Seagate ST2000DL004 drive for the Synology.PACKAGING: 3.5 starUnfortunately, when the drives arrived from Amazon. They were each packaged in the plain cardboard "frustration free" box. This part was fine; however, those two boxes were placed inside a larger Amazon box with our a little bit of crumpled up heavy stock paper on our side. For something as delicate and shock-sensitive as a hard drive, I would have preferred that Amazon's distribution center use the inflatable air bags that are used with some other Amazon products OR use more crumpled up heavy stock paper.Again, while the product itself is essentially 5-star, the overall purchase is 4 or 4.5 star since the distribution center packaging is disappointing and reflects poor attention to detail.

I bought this drive to replace a WD Caviar Black two gig hard drive that was running warm in my server. The drive temp went from 114 F to 100 F and the speed appears to be at least as fast. I plan on buying at least two more of these

I'm amazed at how fast this drive is. It has awesome throughput and is the main storage (not OS) drive for my home server. It has run for a few months without a hiccup, so I assume we're in for the long haul with this drive, which makes me happy.

When I opened my box the two hard drives had just been put in a large box with a few air pillows (see customer photos). That is not the correct way to ship hard drives and not how the company I normally get my hard drives from ships their hard drives. I am returning them, since it is not worth the risk of possible damage. Based on reading other customer's reviews and looking at the customer photos this is a common and on going problem. Amazon needs to train people how to correctly ship these types of items. So much for Amazon Certified Frustration-Free Packaging specifically engineered to protect fragile items during shipping.

This is the third drive from my second return. The first two had some problems. I could not format with partitioning the way I wanted for some reason but with this 3rd one I was able to format and partition the way I wanted. I am please with this hard drive. I won't need another hard drive for a while until this 2TB gets to be filled. Thanks Amazon for taking care of my returns.

I added two of these HDD's to a Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS212j (White) and the whole system is running silently and with very little heat output (~35 Celsius/~95 Fahrenheit).Fast access times and low power consumption make these drives ideal for NAS devices or as internal desktop PC drives to give plenty of storage space.

I use these disks in my Drobo when I'm using Final Cut X.It seems like these disks can't keep up with my workflow.I'm sure they're fine for ordinary stuff but I would not recommend them for Final Cut X.

My main reason for writting this review was to let owners of HP Windows MediaSmart servers know that this drive works fine as a system drive with these units. Newer drives with advanced formatting (and that's almost all drives now) can cause some pretty major problems with Windows Home Server OS, unless you resort to running utilities, etc. This drive does not require that and works out of the box (or at least it did on my HP EX495). Outside of that, it's not the world's fastest drive nor does it seem to be particularly noteworthy in any other way, but that's of minor importance for use in a home server.

I have owned several dozen desktop computers starting in 1986, and have had good experience with most of the hard drives. However, two Seagate hardrives have failed in their first few weeks of operation, including this 2 TB Seagate Barracuda, which failed in the first two weeks of very light use. Fortunately I was only using it as a backup for a large number of photographs. Seagate has been very good at replacing and refunding these drives, but I am leery of losing data, so I have now switched to another make of hard drive.

I purchased 3 of these for a Drobo raid set-up. In the past 6 months, two of the three have now failed. Fortunately, warranty replacement through Seagate has been easy online, but my expectations for the one remaining drive and the warranty replacements are low.I have never seen drives fail so consistently before.Update: the replacement drive through Seagate has failed. It worked for four months.With the constant cost of return shipping and time to rebuild, I would not take the chance on this manufacturer.

Good price. Easy to install. Easy to format. Easy to use. Fast enough for what I use it for as a media library.

I installed the Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA drive into my iMac (Mid 2007) after reading several reviews online. Installation and formatting was easy. The drive is extremely quiet and I notice a major reduction in heat. My old drive was a WD 320 gigs at 7200 rpm. The seagate drive is only 5900 rpm but it still seems faster with the 64 mb cache. So far I've had no issues with the drive. Great drive for the money.

I use mine for the external hard drive enclosure I have for my Mac and it works great. I have had ZERO PROBLEMS with it. The price is better than WD (Western Digital) and the performance is top notch. When the time come to add to my enclosure, Seagate will definitely be the way I go!

I bought 4 (FOUR) of them to use in a Qnap TS-419P+ (from another website sure but the price was good and I kick myself for not getting them from Amazon because the RMA process cost me about 7% of the purchase price PLUS shipping back ** So ALWAYS buy from Amazon, NOT the others **{my two cents worth})Well...Qnap listed this as a compatible drive.....but they took it off because so many people complained about loosing RAID when using these drives.I came into the same problem but had gotten them BEFORE they "delisted" them.So if you have any thoughts of saving money and getting them for ANY Qnap NAS, DON'T DO IT!They will drop RAID array, no matter what you have it set as (I tried RAID 0, 1, 6, 10 and JBOD and Individual) and just got degraded, degraded and oh yeah....degraded array.So for any other product I would use them, but I am stuck with a Qnap (got it from the auction site) and now I have to just bear it and spend twice the amount for a HD that works.Side note: Do not get a Qnap.....get a Synology BUT only get it from Amazon (or a 'authorized' reseller) because if you don't, you will NOT have a warranty..period.And Qnap's are only for the semi-professional IT guy/gal or above....hard to configure if you go to 4 bay's or more, ESPECIALLY for Mac's.

one of the two hard drive has failed after 45 days and the warranty is only 30 days after you submit your order.very bad product.note recommended.

I purchased five drives and two failed in the first month. This drive might be okay if you plan to archive data and store it in a safe deposit box. I do not plan to return the two drives, even though they are under warranty, because I would not trust the replacements. I will never again trust Seagate with my data.
