My first drive was a 20 meg Seagate drive which cost more than this one. Sadly, I bought one less than six months ago, and it failed with less than 3100 hours on it (from SMART).But what prompted me to write the review was the fact that the warranty-*REPLACEMENT* drive is also junk. The original was manufactured in China, the replacement (refurbished) in Korea. Interestingly the refurbished drive shows 0 hours in SMART, so evidently they are able to reset the counters. So, replacement drive is failing after less than 48 hours. "The device, \Device\Harddisk2\D, has a bad block."Caveat emptor. This was supposed to be a RAID-1 companion to a WD drive:amazon dot com/RE4-Enterprise-Hard-Drive-WD2003FYYS/dp/B002XW44QYI am extremely impressed w/ the WD drive. I'm currently doing a robocopy of 1.5 T of data, and the WD is significantly faster than the Seagate (plus, the WD doesn't lock up & throw a bunch of errors). chkdsk on the wd was an order of magnitude faster than the equivalent Seagate drive.Over on newegg, I see similar complaints about Seagate's plummet, esp. wrt their "rebranding" of Samsung. If you're about to purchase a Samsung drive assuming you'll get the same quality, beware, since Seagate bought them out.

I used to only buy Seagate drives, and at the time most came with 5 year warranty, the best in the biz. But now most are 3 year warranty, and I have had multiple drives fail shortly after the 3 year mark. They will not work out any kind of replacement or discount once past the warranty, so I am essentially out $150 plus for "top of the line" drives. Based on my recent experience I am now using a competitor (Toshiba), hoping they are better. So far their drives are quieter, and performance in line with Seagate. The ONLY thing I still like about Seagate is their utilities for testing drives that have errors and have failed. But I would much rather have a drive that doesn't fail, and not need to use that software. So I guess their priorities are in the wrong place.

After moving around about 5TB of data recently, I noticed a loud, obnoxious clicking noise coming from my Probox 4-bay enclosure, and fearing for my data I removed each hard drive and tested them on my desk to find out what was wrong. I've had 2 SG drives fail before and lose a significant amount of data, 0 WDs, so I've been biased for awhile and figured it was the SG drives clicking again. WRONG. My 2 2TB SG drives were running flawlessly and barely made any noise at all, no matter what I did to them. I then tested my 2 1TB WD Caviar Black drives (considered to be WDs best and most reliable drives) and BOTH of them were much louder than the SGs when seeking for data, one was even audible down the hall and in the next room. I would partially attribute this to the 7200rpm speed, but that only explains them being louder than the SGs, which spin slower, the noise difference between the two WDs is unacceptable and the louder one is getting replaced soon. Now that I'm considering changing my allegiance, I have some advice to offer potential buyers of ANY brand of hard drive. Always make a backup, of your backup. Drives are incredibly cheap now, so get 2. Get them both from different manufacturers and see which one works better for you. Once you test them both, if they both pass, delete one and use it for something else, sell it, or just keep it in your closet for an emergency.EDIT: Forgot to mention, by Caviar Black killer, I do NOT mean performance-wise. Obviously a 7200rpm drive is "better" than a 5400 or 5900, but when you run most everything from a SSD, spindle speed becomes basically irrelevant and size and reliability are your biggest concerns. Also if you store huge files, like BD/DVD rips, a slower spinning drive is better. Google it for a better explanation if you're curious.

I have just had ANOTHER Seagate drive failure!! This drive was a replacement for a new drive that failed after 3 months. A surprise is that the Seagate replacement drives have all been REBUILT drives - not new drives, evidently they have a lot of returns and this is a good way to get rid of them. To be fair, the replacement drive lasted twice as long as the initial new drive - 6 months!! Prior to using Seagate originally I used Maxtor drives that were almost "bulllet proof", but then Seagate bought Maxtor and I continued on using Seagate drives, something I am very sorry for today. The 3 year warranty that Seagate offers will probably be reduced by them to a more believable 6 month warranty I would suspect. Very disapointed and disgusted.I am not complaining over the failure of one drive..more than half of the Seagate drives on our 14 systems have failed within an unreasonable time frame. All our systems have large power supplies and have UPS protection because dependability is key to our operation. There is absolutely no reason for these early failures! Incidently, before you buy a Samsung hard drive you might want to check who really manufactured the drive as I have been told that Seagate produces some of the, or all, of the Samsung drives. As a solution, I have started phasing out ALL the Seagate hard drives on all of our systems and will NEVER use another Seagate product. I am not a particular fan of Western Digital, but they now offer a 5 year warranty on some of their better drives - a good investment in my opinion. In the past Weatern Digital had been accused of knowingly shipping drives that had bad components, but that was long ago, so I'm hoping for the better now.

I purchased mine on 12/14/2011 form a large retailer to store and back up files. Once I got it installed and formatted and loaded files it worked well for a month. I travel a lot and might only use this machine a few days a month. Next time I booted up it would lock up but after several tries I could boot and run and access files. But had trouble getting to all files and did not remove them until to late and now the drives locks up the system anytime it is connected and the files are lost and can not access them. It now set in a drawer waiting until Seagate admits a problem and comes up with a repair.Might want to use a different brand for large storage.Paul

This is a good hard-drive. My only complaint is that because of it's architecture, it throws incorrect error's to my Netgear NAS. It is a known issue, but an irritating one. My NAS sends me an email every time this happens and fills up my inbox with errors that according to the manufacture, do not mean anything. I have run a diagnostic on these drives and there is nothing wrong with them so no warranty on them. Just drives me nuts with telling me they are dropping data.

I purchased 3 of these green drives for a home NAS to use RAID 5. The first two failed within 6 months and the 3rd one went yesterday. I purchased in March 2012. Seagate charges for advanced replacement. I have NEVER had a hard drive fail before so for these all to fail within 12 months, I was very let down by the company. The only positive note is that I can say the return process was painless even though it did cost like $15 to do the replacement.Find something of better quality like WDC or Hitachi. I cheaped out with these and in the end, it bit me.

I installed this drive in my MacPro as additional space/backup in early April, 2012. It received minimal to light usage, with files totalling probably less than 5% of the capacity being copied over periodically. After about a month, my system took an extremely long time to boot up and then the drive was listed as unreadable. I used Disk Utility and it said the Seagate was damaged and needed to be reformatted. I lost a very small amount of data, as the majority of what was on it was backed up elsewhere.I reformatted the whole thing, but was cautious about using it too much, as I feared something else would go wrong. Today, I realized I haven't paid attention to it in a while, and looked for it, only to realize it will now not mount at all! It is completely dead and won't appear in Disk Utility, System Profiler, etc. I pulled it out and reinstalled it in the bay and still nothing.Dead as a doornail, after virtually no use.Am in the process or arranging its return to Seagate. Terrible product. I saw some of the warnings in comments here, but thought I would chance it as it would not be used for critical information. This was my mistake as it has still been a hassle and complete waste of time/money. I've not had a drive fail in 20+ years with other equipment.Do not buy this garbage!

Let's be honest, there are not a lot of things to review when it comes to an internal hard drive. The main things are if they work and if are stable. I ordered four of these for a NAS device (the Synology DiskStation 4-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS411J (White) if you're interested) and one of the drives was dead on arrival. Amazon replaced it quickly and the system has been running for 10 months with no drive problems what so ever. The speeds I'm getting are exactly what would be expected with the NAS device running in RAID 5. I'm getting about 30MB/s writing to the drive and 60MB/s reading from it which is more than fast enough to stream HD content.I'll update this review if any of the other drives go bad, but as of now all the tests show perfectly working drives. I'd definitely recommend these drives.

This HDD worked fine out of the box. Seagate tried to cheat me on the warranty, so please make sure you check that while you still have the box / receipt. It worked great for about 4 months and then disappeared. Seems they have a similar firmware issue to the 7200.11 series. Seagate insists this isn't so, but data recovery firms tell me otherwise. I saved money on this drive, but it's going to cost me in the end. I'd suggest you try a manufacturer that knows how to write firmware and will correct their obvious errors.

Couldn't be happier and I'm actually surprised by the amount of negative reviews. Crazy thing is I bought these locally on sale for $69 each before the flood in Thailand. Looks like prices are still not back to normal...

I would like to give seagates lineup of green drives some much earned love. I have 5 of these and I had them in a 5 bay Qnap ts-509 pro and for the last 3 years they have performed flawlessly. The thing that makes my review worth reading is the fact that this nas has traveled the world with me. I lived in japan for about a year then deployed to Afghanistan for 7 months then back to America. All I did for travel was take the drives out and put them in a Duffel bag with bubble wrap. I do not need to Comment on the preformance due to the other 100+ reviews that clearly state these drives outshine. I commend Seagate for deciding to move from 5 to 3 year warrantys, THEY ARE SAVING YOU MONEY. For small businesses a 3 year warranty is better then most computer components now and days. And statistically if they don't fail in three years then they will at about 6 so as long as the users do not abuse them you should be good. I am no fan favorite and have had every brand of hard drive and i strongly recommend these drives to anyone looking for the perfect NAS drive. I have 2 raids with these and never had a disk failure in the 3 years running. Do not hesitate buy the Seagate you will not be disappointed!

I bought a total of 10 of these Seagate 2TB LP drives and after minimal use in my mediacenter already 2/10 failed miserably. What's even worse is the Seagate warranty return. If you have to return multiple drives you need to login but you can only create an account if you are a reseller, OEM or other kind of company. I had to return two of these and another Seagate Momentus 2 1/2 inch notebook drive which was DOA. The reliability of these terabyte drives is in the crapper. There is no quality control. If you do not care about losing everything on these drives anytime within the first year, go ahead with Seagate. I will stay away from them as they have become the Yugo of hard drives. The fact that Seagate has been cutting back on the warranty period from 5 to 3 and from 3 to 2 or 1 year on some other drives shows you that they have no confidence in their own product.Amazon review system needs an update. Besides selecting for stars, there should also be a way to eliminate reviews that have been written after less than 6 months or 1 year of ownership. 95% of hardrives work well within the first month (when most people write their premature and glorious reviews). I want to hear from customers that used the drive for over one year and see how many are still happy about their purchase.

I've had this hard drive running for about a year now (since July 2011) in my gaming computer. It's being used as a data storage drive, so doesn't get as much use as a boot drive does, but I've been quite satisfied with its performance. I am using it with an ASUS P8P67 MoBo, which supports Sata II 6GB/s, and have it and a different hard drive connected to the SATA II connectors on the MoBo. Hard drive transfer rates are easily the bottleneck in my system (I'm running a Core i5 2500K), and transfer between this and my OS drive (which is probably as fast as transfers to/from stuff on my computer are going to get) happens at about 110 MB/s for a single, large file. It tends to be slower when you're transferring many small files (duh). That's pretty quick, enough so for me, and destroys my USB 2.0 and 3.0 transfer rates with ease (~35 and ~55 MB/s, respectively).Anyway, so far reliable. I'll let you (and Seagate, believe me) know if it fails.

I've owned about 12 Seagate drives since 2001 for personal use and bought dozens for my clients. This company makes a quality product. The quality of their product, matched with their fantastic warranty makes these a no brainer for me. You pay a little more than you would for the 'bargain brand' of the hour, but don't be fooled. Spend the extra ~$10 and get the seagate.

I purchased two of these to expand my storage capacity on my FreeNAS home server. I had a pair of Western Digital 7200rpm drives, and added these Seagate 5900rpm drives to the mix. I was hopeful that with 4 drives in the array the speed difference wouldn't be too noticeable. After rebuilding my volume, I had a 6TB container running RAIDZ1 (equivalent to RAID5) with decent transfer speeds. The limitation for me was definitely my network interface. I consistently can stream files over the network at 85Mb/s and the drives are more than capable of keeping up.Running local tests I find that with my combination of drives and motherboard, I'm able to see sustained write speeds that fluctuate between 900Mb/s and 1.03Gb/s. I have a feeling these could be a touch higher if the Seagate drives were 7200rpm units, but for my needs (backing all my home PCs up to the NAS, storing music & pictures) I'm more than happy. The drives also seem to run a little cooler than my WD drives which makes sense because they spin a little slower. For the money (I caught them on sale) I highly recommend. Drives prices are still too high due to the flooding in the Asian tech markets, but if you need lots of storage these are hard to beat. I would stagger them with another brand, and run them in a mirrored or RAID5 (or 1+0) configuration to reduce the risk of losing data to a bad drive or even a bad batch of drives.

I have bought/sold Seagate drives for 25 years. I have recommended Seagate for most of those years. I am in the storage business and have a lot of direct experience with drives. The problem I am discovering is a greatly reduced reliability in Seagate 1.5 and 2TB disks. I currently have about a dozen 2TB Seagates in active use. 7 of them are beginning to fail, in under 4,000 hours of use. These are disks which were burned in by certifying them for about 3 days with an intensive read/write pattern, to eliminate early failure disks. In the general disk population, I have also seen a high failure rate. This is unacceptable.Google performed a study using over 100,000 disks a few years back. Google found statistical differences in failure rates between manufacturers, that they did not publish. They also noted that "enterprise" drives did not result in longer lifespans. They found NO correlation between heavy duty or light duty use in failure. What Google did report was that a handful of SMART parameters could be used to predict drives that would soon fail. Among these are reallocated sectors. Once a drive begins reallocating, they generally fail within 6 months or less. There are SMART utilities which are starting to implement this knowledge and alerting users to predicted failures. For a long time, Seagate was the premium brand of hard drives, along with Hitachi. They may still be. However, this failure rate on the 1.5 and 2TB drives, in addition to the major firmware flaw on the 1.5TB drives (Many customers lost data on the 1.5TB drives, where drives suddenly failed from a firmware flaw), makes me very cautious on Seagate now.I am recommending Hitachi for now, they will cost a little more, but until more data is in, be alert if Seagates are installed and perhaps avoid them in servers and mission critical installations. I have no data yet on the 3TB drives.
