However, the reason I never bought a console before because I didn't really see an advantage over PC gaming. Now, I love detailed graphics (which is why I preferred computer games for so many years) but to me that is not all that gaming is about. The PS3 and Xbox360 games look awesome, but when you get down to it, you are still just pressing buttons. And you can punch buttons on a PC just like the consoles. So for me there weren't enough differences between the PC and a game console to justify the extra cost of a dedicated game machine and the more expensive games. Then came the Wii.
Now for all of you that have been gaming for years--every day of your life, for several hours a day--I can see why you wouldn't like the Wii. All those years of training your thumbs to move little joysticks and perfecting rapid button pushing skills are mostly useless when you pick up a Wii remote. This is not the console for the hardcore gamer.
But for the rest of us, the Wii is the great equalizer.
I have tried to play video games with my boys in the past but it would take me most of the time I had to play, just to figure out how to get started. My boys were always very patient and helpful, but I'm sure that the only reason they weren't bored out of their minds was just because I was spending time with them. I doubt they got much fun from playing with me. (Well, other than the entertainment of watching mom's characters kill themselves 30 times in a row because I kept pushing the wrong buttons.) Now, we can actually have fun playing together. My boys have put in lots more gaming hours than I have, and the first couple of weeks we had the Wii they could beat me at just about everything. Now not only can I play, but I can sometimes obliterate them. Hee-hee.
I love the motion controls. It is not just a gimmick to me. It is much more natural and fun. Yes, playing Lego Star Wars on the PC is fun, but for a lifelong Star Wars fan like myself, getting to swing the Wii-mote around like a light saber in Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga is just about worth the price of the system alone.
I am also very happy with Nintendo itself. After months of heavy use, our Wii developed a disc drive problem one week before Christmas. Now, you could say that this means it is a defective product. But I have had tons of computers and sometimes you just get a bad drive. This is why you have a warranty. Anyway, we had bought games and more Wii-motes and Nunchuks for the kids and it would really wreak our presents if the Wii wasn't there for Christmas. They explained they would do their best but there were no guarantees. To make a long story short, at absolutely no cost to me they shipped it back the repair shop, fixed it, and shipped it overnight so that it arrived on the morning of the 24th. Stuff like that makes me a lifelong fan.
The Wii is really great for wet, cold winter days when it is too miserable to go out and play. When people are sick and we can't go anywhere, we can still go bowling. (Unfortunately, the Wii controls are very realistic and I am just as bad bowling at the virtual bowling alley as I am at the real one.) My whole family is having a ton of fun with this. We used to spend evenings sitting watching DVD together--now we play games together. Now, I've actually seen people complain about the fact that you can't just sit and play, but that's what I like about it the most.
We have a Tigger in our family who can't stay still for more than a few seconds at a time. Getting him to sit down and play a board game is next to impossible. We would have to call him back from across the house every time it was his turn, so having a family game night was pretty much out--until now. Now we can play Mario Party 8, Godzilla Unleashed, or whatever and he can have fun and bounce around all he wants. Fun without the stress.
I highly recommend the Wii. You get a whole lot of bang for your buck. For the less than the price of a PS3, I have bought the console plus 3 Wii Remote Controllers, 3 Wii Nunchuk Controllers, and had enough left over to buy several games. But more importantly, it has been a fun addition, beneficial addition to our family. The Wii definitely makes my lifetime list of Best Purchases I Have Ever Made.
