The Wii Fitness and fitness related games were one advantage of the Wii platform. If they still are (given the games), then it might still be a good buy. At the risk of sounding like a teen fanboy, I prefer my PS3 & XBox.

I've read many reviews of the Wii that begin, "I had it a week (or month) and it's now collecting dust because it didn't (fill in un-met expectation here) compared to the (XBOX 360, PS___, etc). It's unfortunate that way too many folks these days need instant gratification in order to be fulfilled or narrowly define what is considered worthy or not based on a comparison to something it isn't supposed to be compared to. There's 2 things that I think are obvious about the Nintendo Wii: 1-it was created for a specific target audience, namely, Nintendo loyalists wanting the next generation Nintendo console, non typical gamers and kids; and 2: it was not created to compete head to head with the graphics intensive and usually brutally violent games of the XBOX and PlayStation line. If you understand these two points, you will see that the Wii is an excellent choice. My family is easy to please as we still purchase board games and we all enjoy playing those as well as all the electronica that comes and goes in an instant.
After a year, the hype of being newly released cannot account for the lack of availability. Wii's are in short supply for a good reason, they're a great buy. The price is well below the other guys but the bang for the buck is more than many things I've purchased before. Availability of games is also not a problem. My last visit to Wally World found shelves full of a variety of games. The Wii also allows older folks who have never played a video game to get in there and play against 5 year olds by using familiar movements like throwing a bowling ball or swinging a bat or tennis racquet to perform the onscreen actions. The idea that a family can get together and play is a diminishing trend due partly to the fact that more kids are playing video games that parents don't have time to learn or even understand. The Wii also plays the earlier Gamecube games that will soon become available at bargain prices or were purchased over the years of use with the Gamecube. We have plenty and my kids still enjoy those games as well. There are slots for the Gamecube controllers, memory cards and microphone as used in the Mario Party games and 2 USB slots for a keyboard and whatever else Nintendo offers as a USB add on. Another nice feature is the wireless connectivity. If you have a wireless Internet connection in your home, the Wii will find it and connect to offer on-line Nintendo shopping, weather and news.
There's not a lot of sitting around with many of the Wii games. You have to move. Every notion you've had about kids staring at video game screens while buried down in the couch cushions may change after using the Wii. Some of these games require movements that will almost wear you out. I've watched my kids play just about every game we have standing up. We have Guitar Hero III and I have a better appreciation for the effort that rockers have made over the years in their performances. The cover versions of the classic rock songs are excellent and my kids are enjoying the rock songs we listened to in the 60's, 70's and 80's. I've even been forced to listen and "play" a variety of musical genres that I previously ignored and actually now like some grunge and heavy metal.
The biggest after purchase cost over-run for me came from purchasing extra controllers. The typical Wii package comes with one controller. Depending on the game, if more than one person wants to play, you have to pass the controller from player to player and this doesn't work for team or head to head games. Extra controllers run about 40 bucks and the Wii can handle up to 4. Although not necessary, a standard SD memory card can be used to store games and settings and those are available these days for under 15 bucks. This is a big improvement over the expensive propriatary memory cards that were used with the Gamecubes and were never enough for all the saved games. In all, I probably dropped 600 bucks for the console, 4 controllers, 1 extra nunchuk, battery charger and stand, 6 game discs, and all of this was purchased at "normal" retail prices. With the price gouging out there, this was actually a good deal. Please don't be suckered into over paying due to impatience. The Wii will be available soon when things settle down and waiting will also be a good lesson in patience.
Finally, I appreciate Nintendo's effort to inc
