BASIC REVIEW:
This console is so fun, entertaining, and versatile I would be willing to pay twice as much money for it. The backward-compatibility with GameCube games & controllers plus the ability to download classic SNES, N64, etc. games makes this the only Nintendo console you need. Additionally, the News, Weather, Everybody Votes Channel, Internet Channel, Photo Channel, and many others will serve your needs beautifully. It's very easy to use this device ten hours a day, seven days a week and not get bored of it.
DETAILED REVIEW:
In addition to what I said in my basic review, the Wii has the following:
Pros:
-Small, stylish form factor and the ability to rest horizontally or vertically make the Wii a great accent to any room.
-Motion sensor completely revolutionizes gameplay. It feels very natural to point at what you want or to turn the controller when steering a virtual vehicle. That's right. Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel takes advantage of this new technology to bring gamers what they've been instinctively been trying to do for years: steer by twisting the controller.
-The simple Wii remote is so easy and intuitive to use you quickly forget about it and get immersed in the game.
-Remember not being able to pause your games? Not any more. By pressing the Home button on the "Wii-mote," as I like to call it, you can instantly freeze the game. On that menu one can check the battery levels in all four controllers, go directly to the home menu, get help (when using a channel), or rearrange the order of Wii-motes (1st player becomes 3rd player, for example.)
-The wireless Internet connection allows for easy software updates, game/channel downloads, and Internet viewing.
-Parental Controls can restrict children from viewing inappropriate material on the Internet, changing Wii settings, or spending money on the Wii Store.
-Portability: the Wii is the lightest full-featured console on the market and the smallest, which makes it a breeze to carry it in a case. I recommend the Wii G-pak Console Organizer Case - Black; I've been using it for months. It performed admirably during my two transcontinental flights and the Wii & accessories all came out without a scratch.
Cons:
-Motion sensor doesn't work if the Wii remote isn't aligned in front of the TV or with an unblocked line of vision to the Sensor Bar. For four people to play at once you need to sit side-by-side.
-Using a wireless router with a password more complex than a WPA password won't work with the Wii. Also, you have to type the password on the screen - not good if other people are there.
-The Parental Controls are dumb, in my opinion. By dumb I do not mean useless, I mean stupid. Instead of categorically blocking content, they can only block the entire channel. For instance, to block pornography on the Internet Channel you must restrict the whole thing, same with the Wii Shop Channel and Wii Settings. Your four-digit password is required to access them at all.
-The Wii needs an adaptor to connect using Ethernet.
-The Internet loader is pretty slow - you'll want to stick to a computer.
-When downloading items from the Wii Shop Channel, an annoying Mario runs across the screen collecting coins and occasionally hitting one of the three overhead blocks. The noise is supremely irritating; I recommend muting the TV.
-The Wii uses a moderate graphics processor - no high definition gaming like in the XBox 360 or PlayStation 3.
-It's easy to accidentally move a character on the screen when simply reaching for something in the real world - the Wii-mote's motion sensors see to that.
Overall, the cons are pretty easy to tolerate - I barely notice them. I only listed the cons so you'd have a thorough understanding of what you're going to get. The reason I brought my Wii on two transcontinental flights was because I had so much fun without it, I couldn't bare going a whole month without playing my Wii.
You might say the Wii is expensive. Two hundred fifty dollars could buy you about 50 meals. However, when compared with the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii is much more fun (I own all three consoles and have used them extensively; the Wii reigns supreme) and cheaper. If you're thinking about getting a new game console, get a Wii. Besides, why do you think it's still sold out after a year and a half of being out? It's a wonderful device. Trust me, you'll be glad you spent the money for it.
