We purchased the Nikon Coolpix L620 on August 30, 2013 to replace our 2008 vintage Coolpix which was lost in a white water spill after 5 years of great pictures. Several days after receiving the L620 we headed off to Great Smokey Mountains National Park for a week of relaxation and pictures. Several hundred pictures later in a variety of compositions and lighting we return giving the L620 high marks. Needless to say the 18MP images render a sharp crisp picture. We didn't buy this camera to take low rez pictures so all of ours were at full resolution. In non flash situations the camera was able to recycle in less than a second between independent pictures. When a flash was used, often as a fill flash which produced amazing results, there is a noticeable time between pictures approaching 2 seconds which was not a problem at all. The 14x zoom was great when taking wildlife pictures although the automatic settings resulted in a slower than desired shutter speed resulting in a few blurred images. Perhaps the most impressive result was the vibrancy of the colors, exceeding expectations for a camera of this size and price. Performance in low light and foggy situations was notably good.Now for the rational for the 4 rather than 5 stars. We purchased the L620 in part because it uses 2 AA batteries rather than rectangular customs. With our last camera on several occasions we found ourselves without a spare battery so the ready availability of AA's made dealing with the lesser battery life a reasonable compromise: carrying an extra set in our pocket is easy. In a variety of lighting situations ours averaged 73 pictures (again at max resolution and mixed flash) over the trip (Duracell NiMH 2450mAh). Not bad performance. What was surprising is the lack of warning that you were about to run dry. In our previous 2 Coolpix a warning appeared in the view finder several pictures prior to the battery running dry. With the 620L there was little warning and in two cases the batteries died with none at all (yes there is a little battery in the view finder but it is not at all precise). For a company of Nikon's reputation this is a miss that needs correction.One suggestion, get a high capacity/quality memory card (we used a 32GB SanDisk Extreme) as it is worth cost for the capacity.All in all I would give the L620 a strong recommendation and look forward to years of use.

I had this camera for less than a month before I decided to return it without getting a replacement. It had a defect: while I was shooting video, it would randomly stop the video and shut down after it flashed a "low battery" warning. This occurred even when the battery was brand new and still working perfectly as was proven after turning the camera back on and taking numerous photos while the battery indicator showed full, and the camera never turned off. This issue aside, I have more issues with this camera.I purchased this camera specifically to be able to quickly pick up a camera and snap pictures of birds in our backyard. I have a Nikon D40x (digital SLR camera) but using it quickly has not seemed to work very well, and my wife does not know how to use it. Using this Nikon coolpix L620 I use the auto and easy auto mode to shoot so that regardless of the conditions, I can take quick pics. One of the issues that I've noticed is that it takes a long time to focus. It begins at pretty much already focused, then moves through the extreme possible focus range back to the original focus. This takes a bit longer than a second, which is frustrating when I have a short window of opportunity. Also, I've noticed that even when I have zoomed in on a bird so that it is in the center of the view window, filling half of it or more, with nothing obstructing in front of it, it frequently does not focus on the bird, but will pick up the background or something else. This combined with the camera moving through the entire range of focus before setting can take quite a bit of time to finally get the camera to focus on the desired object. Many of the pictures I have taken have been slightly blurry from the camera not properly focusing. This could be another defect in this specific camera. I could not tell you as I am not going to purchase another.The pictures that I have taken that were properly focused turned out beautifully. I uploaded one such picture.

I use a camera for work - I make house inspections. This camera has everything I need plus more. The quality of the photo and video is very good. The quality is "real life". My previous camera did not have such good quality. As it is now, I don't even use the highest setting because I always download my photos into electronic storage and always lower the quality so it doesn't take up that much space.The camera is fast to take pictures. however, on the highest quality setting the camera slows down. It takes time to save the picture onto the memory card after each shot. The highest setting takes the longest and lower settings are faster. The flash is fast - it will go as fast as the pictures will. So the speed is not affected by the flash. It takes pictures at the same speed - whether the flash is up or not.The zoom is good, but not great. I was hoping for a greater digital zoom. It has a good one now - but my last camera was better, so I had higher hopes than I should have.All in all, the camera is light and economical and is very good for the average family user. It uses AA batteries - which was my main requirement. I travel all the time - AA batteries are mandatory for me.I would recommend this camera for anyone a good quality camera that takes high quality pictures.My only complaint is the zoom - but that was because my expectations. The zoom is good as it is. I was just disappointed.

As a serious semi pro who mainly uses a DSLR, I've taken over 4000 excellent shots with the Nikon L610. The new L620 does have a more sensitive CMOS for low light photos- but Nikon, has short changed us with several serious drawbacks with the L620-perhaps to keep the price the same. While the CMOS is more sensitive, it has two serious drawbacks. First is a much slower shutter speed, without flash in any of the "Auto" scene modes. Unless the subject is really still, you're going to get blur and far less color saturation- and a much more washed out shot. The second problem is the flash on the L620. It takes 15 to 20 seconds for the flash capacitor to recharge the flash between shots- compared to only a second or two with the L610- even worse, the flash doesn't even start to charge until you hold down the shutter half way! Think 30 seconds between flash shots. On the L620's menu, you no longer have the option to permanently turn off the dreaded "red eye reduction" double flash and now have to maneuver around it with each flash setting.Nikon should learn that they set the benchmark for AA Lithium cameras with the L610 and that those of us who love it are willing to pay more for significant upgrades- not a stripped out "new" version, with serious flaws, which they've given us in the L620. Nikon usually builds a camera to an excellent standard and not to a price, which they've done here.I returned the L620 for a refund- and am again- happily shooting with my L610, which is a superior camera.

Although in some respects I prefer my point and shoot Kodak, this camera goes 'above and beyond' in other respects. Initially, I wasn't very pleased at all, but once I had a chance to play around with the camera, and set-up some shots, I had a change of mind (I've been using the L620 quite often since December of 2013).~ The Battery ProblemThe batteries that this camera comes with did not seem to 'agree' very well with the video mode. Many times, the camera stated that the batteries were exhausted, although this was clear not the case. Since changing out the batteries with lithiums, the camera has performed excellently. No more exhausted battery messages.~ The Blurry ProblemUsing a tripod is key with this camera. My old camera had an anti-blur mode that was great for spur of the moment shots. This camera's anti-blur doesn't seem to be as effective (without flash). However, using a tripod has yielded some stunning photographs.~ HD VideoThe video quality has been excellent. I had a chance to capture some scenes in the snow, and was very pleased with the detail and coloration. It also did very well in other lighting conditions, such as with a chimney fire. The L620 captured both beautiful photographs and top notch videos.
