It seems that the quality of a Video/Audio camera for computers is comparable directly to the price. My Dell Laptop has a built in webcam that has a 640 X 480 Video resolution and a 1.3 megapixel photo capability. The `LifeCam' also has the same (640 X 480) resolution, but the quality seems to be slightly better for some reason. I suspect it is because the `LifeCam' has 2.0 megapixel photo capability instead of 1.3 and you can place the camera anywhere, instead of fixed directly in front of you. I also compared it to my Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 which has a High Definition Video resolution of 1600 X 1200. Of course the Pro 9000 is much better, but it is also twice the price. The settings on the `LifeCam' are easy to set to a fairly good quality reading with some blur when you move about quickly, but that is typical of almost any videocam for a computer.The nicest features of the `LifeCam' are the low light quality. I simply used indirect light from a window and the picture is fine. Too much light can be worse. The audio is fine as well - not as crisp as the Pro 9000 and a tiny bit tinny, but perfectly adequate. If you want to take a photo with the 2.0 pixel, you know exactly what to expect, as most phone cameras are 1.0 to 2.0 megapixels. There is a slight delay with motion, but that really doesn't matter when you are simply corresponding with another person on the internet. The pan, tilt and zoom are typical of most cameras and is useful. The flexible stand is probably the most inventive part of the camera, allowing you to place it in almost any position, including hanging it over the top of your monitor. This is a very important feature as every person's computer set-up varies.The quality is better than my built-in Dell laptop, but not nearly as good as the Pro 9000. So as the adage goes, you get what you pay for. But to be honest, I don't have great use for a super high quality video camera, so the Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 is a perfect choice for the beginner who just wants to see and talk with their family or buddies on the internet. All this is based on using SKYPE, but I imagine most providers are similar.

So, I had to do a lot of reading and saw some sites saying that this was a good camera to use with Linux. What I found out was that it was easier than I had expected. I just had to connect the camera, turn on Skype and voila, everything was working.I wasn't looking for the best quality image avaliable and mainly because I knew that I didn't have the best internet connection to send back hd quality, so I'm pretty satisfied that my first webcam worked (so) well under Linux.OS: 9.10 karmic koalaapp used: skype betaconsole?: nope!

I am amazed at the quality and ease of use of this device. The installation went perfectly and I was up in less time that I ever emagined. Not only does it do Webcam functions, but it also does audio clips, vidio clips. It also allows me to send email directly from the cam software. Over all, this is worth the money and then some. Amazon has a great price on this item.

Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 (Red) Quality has very good quality. I faced some problems installing it though. Cool Features of changing image styles works only with Microsoft live chat, not with skype / Gtalk / Yahoo Messenger, which is the only thing I miss,it would have been great. Built in Microphone is of good quality. Stand is flexible. Works fine in low light.

Running a Dell Dimension E810 with 1GB RAM, 250GB hard drive with XP Media Center Edition.Update, Live Messenger became a hassle to use. But the camera still works great with Skype and my wife and her family use ours and theirs (same model) weekly or more.We received the camera quickly using the Super Saver Shipping. Physically it is easy to install (plug it in)and is easy to use after the software is installed. However, the CD with the software is better used as a coaster than anything else. When I followed their directions, it just sat there for an hour before I gave up. I then just ejected the disk, stopped the process and plugged the camera into the USB port. Went to the Microsoft site and started to download the driver and it appeared to be instantly doing more than the disk had done in an hour. By this point I had seen enough and went to bed. In the morning, all was well and the camera works great now with Live Messenger. Picture quality is good. Sound is apparently good. My wife can talk to her sister 500 miles away and everybody can see the kids regularly.Chuck the disk, plug it in and go to the Microsoft website, screw the instructions. Without the software issues, this would rate a 5 star item. I have and would still recommend this item to family and friends.

The image quality is much better than expected. The low light image quailty is the best out of any webcam that I have owned. The bendable/adjustable stand seems to fit on anything and can bend to stand on a desk surface. I took a chance on this cam instead of buying the Logitech QuickCam 9000, and I am glad that I did as I saved about $50 and got an excellent performing cam.

My suggestion is to not even try and use the CD that comes with the camera to run the install. Put the CD in but cancel the install. Plug in the camera and the computer will try and install the drivers. Instead of letting it find the drivers automatically, browse to the CD manually. Only then did the camera install for me.If I tried running the CD or downloading the software from Microsoft (which I did a few times) the install seems to work but then 5 minutes into it an error pops up saying it couldn't install because it "encountered a unexpected error". That's it. No explanation whatsoever. A Google search, as many have said, shows many people with that problem. Their suggestions didn't work for me. A little trial and error with the above steps worked.I don't know if there's supposed to be come kind of software with it but I don't have that installed (as I said above, the install always failed). And using Google Chat or Skype it does not look like High Definition video like the box says. Chatting with a friend using their Mac camera they look great at full screen but they said we looked pixelated. They sent us a screen capture of us and the quality was disappointing.For a Microsoft product installing on a Microsoft OS this is absolutely abysmal. Now that it's installed it seems to work fine. But the trouble in getting it installed (and I'm an IT person) is not worth it.

I tried installing this product on a machine with Windows XP and the software will not work. The camera works fine with the various messaging programs and even through the camera wizard, but the microphone and the features advertised with the camera do not. I tried several fixes I found online for the problem and none of them worked. If you are running Windows XP, buy a different camera.

I have ordered two of these new VX-5000 Cameras because I had to send mine (same model, just a red ring around it) to my family in South America, so we can communicate. I also sacrificed an antique Intel 431 from 2001 which I sent as well. Surprisingly the new VX-5000's are not remotely as good as the old one was. Not to speak of the Intel which operates on a whole different level. I am somewhat disappointed seeing the pictures from South America with my old cam through Microsoft Messenger being much crisper, with much better colors than my new one - Messenger really gives me an A:B comparison. Well. I am NOT happy with the new cameras I ordered, but for the price I paid for them I will live with them for a while. Microphone works. The Microphone on the one in South America is excellent!Shipping was fast and this complaint is just about the lower quality of the basically same product VX-5000

I did a lot of research on this product before I bought it and I love it! It is great! The only two complaints I would say that I have is that I wish you could have the fun features on while you are video chatting and that the bendable holder was a little bit longer. Other than that this web cam is GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone!

This camera is awesome for the money. The picture quality is excellent for pictures or doing video chat (AIM, Skype, Windows Live)There are cool settings to play around with such as enlarged eyes, different colors, and animated features to add on to your head/faceI was pleasantly surprised with how perfect this camera is for what I was looking for, especially for the price!I would definitely recommend it!

If you are a novice user this is a great piece of equipment. It's very easy to install, (took about 5 minuets and Windows 7 did everything for you) Picture quality is OK, not professional quality but good for general use. The grip is very handy and can be attached to most anything near the computer. I only wish it had a lens cover.

I have a Mac Mini so it didn't come with a camera. I bought this and was able to walk my wife through the installation over the phone so I can video chat with the family while on the road. The sound quality was very impressive and the image quality is on par with nearly every other web cam on the market. I highly recommend it.

I bought this camera to use with Skype and it was pretty hard to get us all together where we could see each other at first and when we did, the picture quality on their end was horrible, but I saw them pretty clearly. The price is right with this camera, but they spent $20 more and got a much better camera. This one is hard to attach to the back of a flat screen and had to be duct taped on. Because I don't use mine often except to say hi to the grandparents I probably won't upgrade really soon, but if you want a really good camera, spend a couple extra dollars.

Microsoft's LifeCam VX-5000 is very small, the camera also has a colored ring that goes all the around the face. This ring comes in red, blue and green. The camera which I got has a blue ring. A blue LED is placed in the upper left hand corner of the face that turns on when the camera is in use. It is good to see that this LED is very dim. Having a Bright Blue LED flashing at you can be very annoying.Video is recording done with the following resolutions, frame rates and bitrates in WMV video with 160kbps WMA audio.640x480 15 fps 1900 kbps320x240 30 fps 900 kbps160x120 30 fps 675 kbpsImages are taken at 1280x960, 640x480, 320x240 and 160x120 in jpeg format. Audio is recorded in WMA at 48 kbps, monoPROS:[+] Very Small and Inexpensive camera[+] Decent Audio and Video Quality[+] Flexible Base which adapts to almost all places for placement of the camera[+] The glossy black plastic looks great, feels great and looks well built.[+] Low video and image noise with comparable USB webcams[+] USB powered, No Need for additional power supply needs.[+] Nice array of video overlays and effects that can be added for fun.CONS:[-] 640x480 video only runs at 15fps that can cause jitters on the video[-] The software is very basic and does not have additional customizations.[-] 1.3 megapixel (1280x960) JPEG capture is not that good as it does heavy compression.[-] The Button on the camera works only when Windows Live Messenger software is installed.The Webcam is recognized by Windows XP Professional (SP3) without any need for additional drivers and most applications (like Paint) could easily import the pictures as a USB video Device, But for Windows Vista (32Bit) it seems that even though it got recognized and drivers loaded it still needed the software CD to make it useable for most of the applications.Bottom-line is that it is an inexpensive well designed Webcam which will surely serve it's purpose very well without much of a fuss. The Software is easy to use. This is a keeper, Money well spent.

My daughter moved to England for a few months, and we're keeping two of her dogs for her. She told us about Skype, so my wife and I each bought one of these combination mic/web cameras for our desktop computers. We installed the software quickly, plugged the units into our USB ports, and viola! Instantly we were sharing an online video call with my daughter so she could see and "talk to" her two Shih-Tsu pups! Is it "high definition" quality. Not even close. Is it perfectly adequate for video phone calls. Absolutely. Great little product. Easy to use, excellent sound quality, and we're thrilled with ours. Thank you, Microsoft, for another cool little product!

Pros: The quality of the picture of the camera is very good. The camera's software and compatibility with other software is easy and straight forward. The installation was simple as well.Cons: Attaching it to your computer is a little bit of a hassle, but once you get it where you want it, it has been fine.Note: You need to install the software first before you ever plug the camera in or there will be problems, which is posted all over the instructions. This is only a problem for people who don't read the instructions.

This cam works great, when it decides to actually show up.I've reinstalled the software over and over again because the camera fails to work on any consistent basis.Would not recommend this product.

This webcam does its job very well. No problems with installation or use. It is compatible with Win 7, which I am using. My older webcam still worked OK, but not with Win 7. Picture and sound are good. Satisfied customer.

With all the hype of video conferencing I finally purchased a web cam with mic built in. I was disapointed with the Mircrosoft due to everyone complaining that I cut out on vocals when I video conference on Skype. Haven't had a chance yet to try the cam out on a different service but will try it out on differnt ones, maybe Yahoo!'s service or something. Very poorly designed base that is fine on the desk but horrible on your monitor, and I have a flat screen which is what it was supposed to be designed for. The picture quality is very poor especially with the HD Graphics card I have installed and all the RAM and processing power to boot. Very long time to have the program start, don't know why it has to think so hard just to turn the unit on and show the picture on the screen. But there are better versions of these cams on Amazon, but you will pay for them. If I could do it all over again, I would try Logitec since I love them for their wireless keyboard/mouse combinations.
