...so you can get it out of the package more easily. I never saw a more difficult package. What is the point? Who benefits from this kind of packaging?I would like to have a way to turn off the microphone and/or turn off the camera by a physical switch somewhere within inches of the lens, but I don't find anything like that. And no, having the ability to unplug the USB doesn't suffice, in my opinion.I ordered this camera in the color blue, which means there's a blue stripe around the perimeter of the lens housing. When you look at the camera eyeball to eyeball, it looks black, and the flexible support device that attaches it to your monitor (or whatever) is black.The picture looks really good for such an inexpensive camera. The microphone works fine and doesn't echo the speakers.

This is a great little camera for very little money. It is fantastic in low light conditions (has no problem capturing my black dog in a dark room!) and very responsive to movement. I use it with Skype, so I assume the microphone works well as I've had no complaints on the other end. It's small and unobtrusive enough to leave it sitting on top of my laptop when I'm at my desk. The bendable grip works pretty well (at least if I'm not moving the computer around too much), and it's nice that it's so easy to adjust the field of view by a simple twist of the camera. The one annoying thing is that the button on the top - which is hard to miss when adjusting the camera - only works for Windows Live. Overall, I am very satisfied with this camera and would highly recommend it to others.

Nice videocam for the money. A far cry from the early webcams, good color, good sound. A little choppy with movements, but within tolerating limits.

Great cam for the money! I almost didnt buy it after all the reviews on here... glad i did! The cam AND the software work FINE w my copy of windows 7 64-bit! Someone else said it wont work w more than 3 gigs of RAM... horsedroppings! I have 8 gigs of RAM runs without a hitch! The cam uses thirty percent of resources while recording in 720p with a few internet windows open at the same time. Ya the cam refocuses too much- so what?!? At least it friggin HAS an autofocus!

I have never been able to establish a stable connection with this camera. it works great thru its own program, but is very unstable when using Skype. Must always disconnect and reconnect to the computer to get it to work. Sometimes this does not work either. I am using VISTA which may also be the problem, but I have not been able to find anything confirming this. All troubleshooting information on the Microsoft website leads me to pulling the plug out of the computer and reconnecting it. This is very annoying, and as i said before, doesnt always work. However, when it does work the audio and video are fabulous.

Very nice picture on this Camera. The low light is great as well as the sound. The auto focus gives a better image but it refocuses behind you if your not in the center. I would definitely buy another one of these if I needed it.

they sent back my money because the web site was so stupid they listed the wrong camera i was so dissapointed because i realy was looking forward to gtting the camera it was faulsly advertised

We purchased the LifeCam VX-5000 primarily for Skype use on a Windows Vista desktop computer.Pros:Great camera for the moneyFine picture and video qualityCons:Took a while to install the software, and the install program ran multiple times (at least once for multiple users). I have a feeling you could install this camera without the CD (even though MS says not to) but didn't feel like chancing it.The flexible mounting pedestal is cute and novel, but not extremely secure when used on top of an LCD monitor.The install software wants to integrate the camera as much as possible with Windows Live and assorted Microsoft messaging tools, but we won't use the camera for that. There are several effects available in the LifeCam software (including ones that add virtual wigs and masks to your facial image). These are interesting, but probably only useful or amusing to grade-school children. On a more serious note, we started Skype up, and the camera was recognized immediately.As other reviewers have noted, check ALL the different colors of this camera that are available. For whatever reason, they are not priced the same, and the prices fluctuate. Blue happened to be cheapest when we ordered. Super Saver Shipping took a bit longer than expected, but overall we are pleased with the purchase experience.

OK Video, and OK sound, but consider the following problems:(1) Nearly impossible to stabilize on a laptop screen. The worst mounting design I've ever seen on an add-on device.(2) Comes with a ton of junk software. Totally insulting. They apparently consider webcam users idiots.(3) The wide angle isn't wide. If you put it on a laptop, it will not be usable for more than one person on your side. So it is essentially a single user WebCam. Does not work for a group conversation at all.(4) The software settings are either dysfunctional or have very awkward user interface. Look at this stuff, you understand why Microsoft has not been able to create sleek user interfaces for consumer products (Windows and Office are okay). They are still clueless.(5) The low light performance is mediocre. Usable, but nothing to be excited about.

Not the best webcam in the world, but for what it costs, works wonderfully.After my laptop webcam started having issues with deciding it would take more days off than on (not recognized USB blah blah...) got fed up and started looking for a webcam small enough for convenience without lowering the video quality. This lifecam has a better picture quality than the laptop installed webcam and worth the money. Now, if I were settling down in a house and wanted a really nice webcam, there are definitely webcams that are superior, but for what I need (small, reasonable price for good quality) I got just that.

Easy, easy, easy. Just plugged it in on Windows 7, and everything was taken care of. Within two minutes, it was up and running all on its own. Quality is very good, and I've had no issues at all using it with Skype.

I purchased to of these at the same time - one for me, and one for my son. After we both installed the cameras and starting video chatting, we wondered why we hadn't done this long ago. I didn't install all the Windows Live stuff - I don't use the Microsoft stuff much. I did install Skype immediately after installing the camera, and that works great. You can let Skype search your contacts and you'll know who has Skype already installed and is ready to video chat right away. I am very pleased with the quality of the video. My room is low light, and the camera adjusts just fine. The video can be a little jumpy, but nothing like the old webcams of the past - the audio actually stays with the video very well. For the price, this is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family at long distances. I can actually see and hear my first granddaughter live now.

Clear, takes great pictures, visible to other party when using SKYPE. Great buy for the price. As far as sound is concerned I have found I still have to use headset with mic.

This is a good inexpensive aftermarket addition to my desktop that I have had for a few years. Use it for skyping, very satisfied. If only it would make me look 30 years younger!

I purchased a pair of the VX-5000s so our family could more easily keep in touch with our daughter away at school. I selected the VX-5000s based upon reviews & price. Anything I purchased had to operate seemlessly with the XP, Vista & 7 OSs. (our family has an array of computers) The image & sound quality are so good that our college student was able to participate in our high school student's birthday party from over 2500 miles away. (via skype)

It works well with Windows 7. I use it for Skype and both video quality and the microphone work very well. Easy plus and play installation. I didn't install the extra software, so I can't comment on that.

This was a great camera at first, but the auto focus never turns off! Even with the software installed there is no option to turn it off. So even if you're sitting still and talking it goes blurry for about 3 or 4 second every couple minuets. It's horrible! Other than that the HD and lighting is amazing. If only you could turn off the auto focus it would be a great cam. :(

This product (HD-6000) is great looking, but it has major limitations:- No TWAIN Driver for standard applications.- It doesnt capture really sharp images (Do not believe otherwise)- It gets a little a little too warm when used... YES... Hot compared to others.- Movies produced in high res where produced with low frames.In other words... Not worth all the hype.

The LifeCam VX-5000 meets or exceeds my expectations in every way. It was very easy to install and setup. It works well with Skype and Windows Live Messenger. It is a very good fit with my Windows 7 operating system.

One question I have seen asked here over and over, is will this work on a mac? I took a chance, got it, and... it does!I installed "Macam" which is an open source set of drivers that allows usb webcams to work on your mac.I have used this webcam with photobooth, iChat, and Skype.The webcam performs beautifully, and I notice no slow down.The video quality is very nice, the only con I can think of for this webcam is the fact that it does not output in widescreen format.But, this is a webcam, so I can more than live with that.To sum it up.On a mac, this webcam works (Mac Pro Using Leopard 10.5.6 (it did not work on 10.5.5) I installed the macam drivers (do not need to use the application), and everything is fine (you may not need to install the drivers). I note that I use leopard, because it might not work on tiger or lower. It did not work on 10.5.5 but did on 10.5.6.Video quality is great. I notice no drops, and the quality is impressive. Looks a lot better than some other webcams I have used in the past (many which cost more than twice the price of this one).Works well in low light or plenty of light.Works in iChat, Photobooth and Skype with no problems. It is automatically detected, and "just works"It is very flexible, and "shocker" looks very good! If I sit this next to my speaker, it does not look out of place, on top of my monitor, still looks good. I love this little webcam!PS, one more thing I should mention, the audio quality is fantastic! I'm really impressed. In all honesty, i thought the webcam would either not work, look horrible, have poor image quality, would not be compatible with most applications, and the sound would be bad. The complete opposite is true. It looks amazing, the image quality is great, works with every piece of software I own, and the sound is crystal clear. It picks up from a good ways off. And I could not be happier with this product.If you are on the fence, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. With the pros that I mentioned, and the asking price, you just cannot go wrong.(PPS, I did not install any of the software that came with the webcam, just plugged it in, updated to the latest version of leopard, and tada!)
