If you want to go for a SSD, there is not much room for non-SF-2881 pieces nowadays.Sandforce's branded chip delivers top notch and yet to be paired performance.Up until a couple of months ago, however, this also meant to cope with some troublesome instability, given that most of the drives out there (OCZ, Corsair, etc.) had their share of issues with SF-2881. BSODs and booting freezes were a constant. It sure took Intel a while to release their version of a SF-2881 based drive, but when they did, it was flawless. Just read any review out there.I am not a computer freak neither I follow all hardware reviews in the world 24/7. I just took interest once I had decided I wanted to go for a SSD.And it couldn't have been better. It was as simple as setting my BIOS to AHCI, installing Windows 7 (which BTW just took around 20 minutes, and that was from the DVD, not a flash drive!) and installing Intel Toolbox for not having to care anymore. It's alive for 2 weeks now and not a single BSOD or boot freeze has happened since.I insist: if you want to upgrade, go for a SSD. And if you want a SSD, go for Intel 520. No questions asked.

This is my third SSD. I bought the 250 version for my gaming pc a year ago and no problems at all. I now have two of these 120 versions in my mini-itx low power always on pc that is in a public area of my house that is used heavily by family and friends. I am an experienced builder and I had no problems with the installation. The price is high, but you are getting a branded name that has a reputation to protect and Intel currently has the superior rom that controls the I/O on the drive.

I have a DV7 series HP Pavilion Laptop running Win 7 64-bit with the Hitachi drive that seems to have the life-span of about 18-months on all 3 of my laptops. When I noticed the classic cluster errors, I decided to pick up this SSD drive as an OS only drive and have a second drive as my storage within the laptop.Installation was quick and easy. The migration was a breeze. I've been doing IT for over 15-years: computers, routers, switches, firewalls, so I was expecting the worst and got the best. Here's where it gets bad.About 5 hours into use I get the Blue Screen of Death. No big deal, reboot and figure out what app decided not to play nice. No luck! The drive was bricked! I got another drive and did the entire process again. This time while running OO Defrag I get the BSOD and this drive is bricked too. I moved it to another laptop to look at the drive. The 80-Gig partition turned into an 8-Meg partition. The rest of the drive is missing. Missing as in not even recoverable by FDISK or any other means within Windows.I plugged in "Intel SSD 80 Gig 8" on Google and sure enough a TON of people are having the same problems. The drive just fails randomly and they're left with an 8-Meg drive. Some people are using 3rd party applications to force the drive to recover to factory defaults or just sending them back to Intel. Some even after sending them back to Intel have a failure a month or two later. I already invested nearly 10 hours of time and I am not doing it again. For people considering buying this drive I suggest you pass on it because of the possibility of it being a ticking time bomb in your computer is too much to risk.UPDATE!!!!: After following the 8-meg bug threads the IBM update bricked a bunch of drives. Amazing!!! Firmware update - 4PC10362 intended to fix the issue. Inetel says it's "isolated", but I had 3 drives crash in a week. How isolated can this bug be? As of December 12, 2011 people are still reporting SSD crashes because of this bug and after installing the latest firmware.

I had been holding buying a SSD as I am on a X58 platform, hence no SATA 3. However, when my HDD gave up the ghost, I finally took the plunge & bought the 480GB version.System Specs: EVGA X58SLI MB, Core i7 920, 6GB RAM, MSI 7970 Graphics Card, 2 x 320GB RAID0 HDD (For data), 1TB HDD (For backup)Pros:1. Excellent performance even post filling up more than 280G in less than a day which included 2 reinstalls without secure erase.2. TRIM works even with RAID enabled in MB BIOS.3. large enough to hold my games4. Gives 7.7 on WEI on my systemCons:The usable capacity comes to only 447GB and not 480GB post formattingI would strongly recommend this for a combination of capacity and price.

My opinion on the Intel 520 120GB SSD is based on two previously owned SSDs, an Intel X-25M 80GB SSD and a Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SSD.As compared to the Intel X-25M SSD, the 520 is like night at an day. I'm running the 520 on SATA3 and every mouse click result in near instant responses. Both are very reliable. As compared to the Corse F Series 3, the speed is practically the same, but with the 520 I can have faith no to worry about a crashing and BSODs.I'm running two 520s in a RAID0 array and while the speed is great, running two is overkill. At this point in time, I can not notice real world difference between using one SSD vs two SSDs.This is my first time purchasing retail kit SSDs and Intel provides you with alot of stuff. For my application, the included 3.5 to 2.50 bay converter is similiar in dimensions to a typical HDD. Its is a little cumbersome and extends quite a bit out of the 3.5 drive bay.Overall, this is a good, good purchase. I am thrilled with the speed and reliability.

This is my first SSD drive. Boy does it make a difference compared to a standard notebook 7200rpm mechanical drive. Weight wise, it's about the same. Less power consumption, better performance. I can't speak for reliability just yet, but this worked without a hitch. The drive comes in a height of 9.5mm, however my notebook a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 only accepts 7mm drives. The Intel 320 SSD series uses a black spacer. The spacer has to be removed in order for the drive to fit in my notebook. To remove the space you must remove the screws, remove the plastic spacer, and find some hard drive screws. Even though the spacer can be removed (this does not void the warranty, unlike other drives such as the Crucial m3/m4 drives), I had to take screws out of an old 2.5" hard drive. The screws removed are a little longer to accommodate the height of the spacer. Once I screwed in the shorter screws I was ready to go.I plugged in the drive and restored my OS. Significant difference in performance.I also appreciate the 5 year warranty (extended from 3 years by Intel to prove that the drive is more reliable). However, Intel clearly states, while the drive itself is warranted for 5 years, all SSD drives have a lifespan, the amount of physical writes to the NAND. Once it hits Intel's specified maximum, I think it's 20GB a day for 5 years, if you reach this limit before 5 years, a bit is flipped on the drive and the drive is no longer warranted. So a comment related to the "Retail kit" vs the OEM version. Both drives come with the 5 year warranty, but for $4, the retail kit is totally worth it. It comes with a 3.5" bracket if you wanted to install this onto a desktop computer. A SATA cable and power converter is also bundled. I think the big plus is the SATA to USB 3.0 cable that comes with the drive. While it's meant for migration from a previous drive, you can use it as a way to externalize SATA drives. For 2.5" drives, it also comes with a very thin rubber case. The rubber case is not going to protect the drive from a drop, but it'll at least help the little bumps.

I was running OCZ Agility 3 60GB RAID 0 in my gaming rig and had an annoying issue where a drive was not recognized on boot causing a "Failed" message. I'd have to reboot and hope for "Success." After taking the array down to flash to v2.22 firmware, an OS reinstall only to have the same issue, I was DONE. I sold them off and bought a 120GB Intel 520. I was only expecting an end to the drive recognition issue. The speed increase is noticable and welcome! Everything from OS installation, to surfing and gaming is faster and smoother. A single Agility 3 scored 7.6 on Window Experience index. In Raid 0 they scored 7.8. A single Intel 520 scores 7.9!You have a lot of nerve Intel doing away with my SF-2281 issues AND providing a performance increase over OCZ's in Raid. Seriously though, very impressed Intel; you've gained an SSD fan. Wish 520 was released a year ago..
