This is a replacement for my X25-M. That drive lasted and still have ~95% life left after 3 years, according to Intel's tools. It was only 80GB, so too small for what I wanted. I got the 520 in the 180GB capacity; it allows me to move all of my VMs to the SSD, making them run much better.The 520 is not the cheapest SSD. While functionally identical to other SF-2281 drives, this one has been validated and has a custom firmware, plus Intel's top-shelf flash memory. That was worth the extra money to me, but it may not to you.I'm only using it on a SATA2 port, but it is more than fast enough there. This is one of the fastest SSDs you can get. Worth the money, and recommended.

Pros: Uses Intel 5k flash. Most competing drives use 3k flash which is cheaper but lasts 40% less. May not be an issue but I would like the drive to last as long as possible. Reliable; 5 year warranty, and Intel has been selling the same product without so much as a firmware update for almost 8 months. Sandforce controller has better performance than the competition with data on the drive; see reviews at Tweaktown and Real World Labs. Excellent Toolbox program to periodically optimize drive. Unique Intel firmware with working TRIM; other Sandforce drives don't have working TRIM unless using 5.0.3 or higher firmware. Relatively low power consumption.Cons: Expensive, but compare price to the Kingston Hyper X non-3k which is also 5k flash. This is a better deal. Sandforce controller is not as fast as the competition with incompressible data such as mp3s and jpgs.Other thoughts: Intel is readying an update, the 525 series, which might be mSATA only. Perhaps it will fix the Sandforce AES-256 bug, which is not an issue for me. Intel 330 series drives are similar to these except they use cheaper 3k flash like most competing drives.

They don't get 5 stars because their data migration software (also came in the kit) worked well, but, it shrank my system partition to 29 MB, so small I couldn't run a backup--not good timing. It was easy enough to resolve, but took awhile. Intel earns my tempered praise, I will buy more of their disks and recommend them.

If it gives you a problem, google MiniTool Partition Wizard. Free program, works wonders. Make your partition smaller than the new SSD, then copy/paste from one drive to the other. PC will restart, then finish the job. Afterwards your new SSD will have all the boot flags etc it needs, and will be your new C: =)

There are a bunch of less expensive alternatives out there, but my experience with Intel and their reputation at-large made it a simple decision to stay with Intel. I installed it, setup my BIOS, used the migration software, and was up an running in less than 15 minutes. The migration software is FAST. Much faster than typical Windows file copies in the GB range. Most 3rd party software (and this IS! [Acronis]) is terrible, but not this one. While I need some more time to really see the difference in performance, I have no doubt I made the right decision!!

However I since have found a problem.The Intel Disk Migration software created a tiny (32MB) Windows 7 System Reserved Partition which will not allow Windows Backup to run. I'm hoping this doesn't cause any other problems since it's next to impossible to fix without completely reinstalling Windows now! No response from Intel technical support either!Would have given it 5 stars if the software did its job and 4 if Intel supported the product better! As is I'd heartily recommend the SSD if you use another method to partition it.

Great way to speed up your system. Once I installed Win7 and all of the necessary drivers and software my system is ready to go in about 12 seconds. Comes with some nice software to manage your disk.I was unable to transfer my existing drive to this ssd due to my lack of knowledge regarding cloning software. My old hdd was a GPT disk which most of the free cloning software do not like to copy. I was forced to complete a fresh install of Windows in order to use the new drive.

Great way to speed up your system. Once I installed Win7 and all of the necessary drivers and software my system is ready to go in about 12 seconds. This drive failed in under four months, but it worked well until it failed. Unfortunately can't justify more than one star for an expensive, failed hard drive that resulted in complete data loss. Fortunately I do not trust SSDs (or hard drives in general) and had backed up all important files.Be sure to back up your files since the drive will fail eventually and may fail a lot sooner than you expect.

I just got my 520 today. First thing I did was run the Intel toolbox and ran the longer integ test and it came up in the green. The toolbox doesnt optimize the drive the run button your soupposed to hit is frozen. ( not the program the button just doesnt react ) It does work with my other intel ssd drives. With the Atto test I am seeing read speeds at up to 375mbs and write up to 440mbs. When I get my other motherboard back from Asus I will be testing it against my 510 ssd. Also I have to mention I have had to return 2 ssd's to intel before one drive I recieved used and defective and I the new replacment a year later. ( Intel checked my part number and said it was still under the 5 year warrenty and I sent it in they sent me a new ssd back not a reman ) I have read lots of horror stories of other companies making it a complete hassle to get a replacement. I was able to talk to someone right away , they never asked for a reciept all they did was check the serial number. It took about 2 to 3 weeks including the time it took to return mine first. I give it 5 stars for reliability speed and good service. Ssd's are getting alot cheaper I see them at 128gz for like $75 cheaper from other companies but I read so many bad reviews about the service and reliabilty that I just dont want to risk the trouble it could cuase dropping dead then all the hassles that comes with it. All test were done on my Maximus extreme z using sata3 6g UPDATE I tested my 520 , 510 and my 3g 160gb ssd ( all intel ) with AS ssd benchmark the 520 scored 568 , 510 scored 325 , the 160gb scored 387. I think this is a keeper

I cloned my laptop's HDD to this Intel 520 Series 480 GB SSD without any major problems. Unfortunately, Intel's Migrating software couldn't see the drive (!!!???), so I used the Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit ASW-USB-25 (White) adapter with its included software, EZ Gig IV. Alternative software recommended by CNET includes the free EaseUS Disk Copy Home Edition or the free EaseUS Todo Backup programs for these purposes.The SATA to USB 3.0 adapter I used, the Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit ASW-USB-25 (White), does not require a power adapter like the Vantec NexStar SATA 6Gbps to USB 3.0 Adapter for 2.5/3.5/5.25-Inch SSDs (CB-SATAU3-6), which I have also used successfully. Since it doesn't use a power adapter, the Apricorn instructions suggest disconnecting all other USB devices before use so that the USB port will be able to supply enough power without problems. I did that & it worked fine when cloning my internal HDD to the Intel SSD.Some reviews of this drive that I've found are:1. [...] (Feb., 2012)2. [...] (May, 2012). Awarded first place. For starters: I've built every PC I've owned as well as built PC's for hardware labs for various gaming companies around the Seattle area for over 15years.Once the price came down on the Solid State drives I figured I would buy to check it out.I had no problems with Win 7 Pro 64bit or Asus bios recognizing the drive. A clean install took half the time as a 500Gb HDD. Windows start time from cold boot was extremely fast!Installing 92 windows updates (only critical/recommended) took about an hour while I was also downloading Skyrim - this is based more on connection speed.Installing mods for Skyrim as well as random other programs was about half the time as normal.Watching the SSD load assets in Skyrim and other games was wonderfully quick. Load times with hi-res assets and all graphic options cranked up to max was still faster than loading Med textures on a conventional 500Gb Seagate 7200rpm drive.Once the price drops even more, I will likely buy a few more of these for my wife's PC and for backup.We'll see how long the drive lasts, but considering I've bought multiple 1TB drives over the last few years that failed my hopes are tempered.

I picked up the 240 gig version of the 520 for my Thinkpad W520. Since my laptop has SATA 3, I figured I'd go all out, and didn't mind spending a bit for what was touted as being the best SSD around, blessed with custom Intel firmware. So what if Intel packages this drive with a small CD that contains warranty information but not their drive cloning utility? It just gives me more time to think about how much faster my computer will be!The speed was great, and it was definitely on the faster side of every benchmark I could throw, but as time went on, I had this nagging feeling that I let hype make my purchasing decision. And as reviews started flowing it, it looked like the 520 series may not be the drive to beat.Eventually, I caved, and gave the Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240 GB SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (MKNSSDCR240GB-DX) a try, based on what I was seeing on some review sites.Sure enough, the Chronos Deluxe was knocking off my shiny 520 on every test. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't massive. But 80 points on R+W in DriveBench and nearly 400 points overall was quite an eye-opener -- especially when the Mushkin drive costs nearly 20% less. Granted, you give up two years' worth of warranty. By the same token though, Mushkin's been around for a really long time, and they're based out of Colorado if you ever need help.If I hadn't read some other reviews, I'd be happily chugging along with my 520. By all accounts, it is a very good drive with a very nice warranty. But when comparing speed and value, the Chronos Deluxe is a very compelling alternative.

The included Acronis software could NOT be used to clone the existing drive. After hours of trying various combinations and doubting my procedures, I finally found a reference on the web that admitted software was faulty. After giving up on the Acronis stuff, I located free software (AOMEI) that was then used to do the job and the drive has worked flawlessly. Why include software that you know doesn't work in all cases? Based on past experience I expected more from Intel. Performance is now the BEST.Great drive ... just immediately trash the included software.

I bought this as a replacement for Intel 320 series since I needed more disk space so i thought of moving to a newer model.There's not much noticeable performance difference to be honest (windows experience rating went from 7.6 to 7.9) and it may be too early to tell if the BSOD has been eliminated. I was having BSOD with Intel 320, about 3 occurrences in the past 10 months. Not entirely sure if it were a software issue or a HW (SSD?) problem. I've been using this 520 for about 3 weeks now and so far so good. I'm happy with my purchase!

I was having BSOD with Intel 320, about 3 occurrences in the past 10 months. Not entirely sure if it were a software issue or a HW (SSD?) problem. I've been using this 520 for about 3 weeks now and so far so good. I'm happy with my purchase!

I got this just shy of a year ago. No issues with a failure or other signs of wear. Very fast and stable SSD. I got this just shy of a year ago. No issues with a failure or other signs of wear. Very fast and stable SSD. Following the other reviews I expected it to be faster. It's everything they say it is. With the instructions and online videos they want you to believe anyone can install it. I did. After the data transfer I swaped the new drive for the old HDD and went to the local computer shop a couple of days later to have the BIOS set for the old HDD. Except for that I was able to do it myself and it worked the first time. I got the 240 GB size thinking it was a little more money now but I'd save the extra cost if I did the install myself. It worked. Made a big difference in my computer's performance. I'm happy with the SSD, happy with the purchase and happy with the performance. I'd definately buy again.

We ordered this along with a Black Magic product. The SSD was very nicely made but it was not fast enough for our use. I returned it to the supplier. I would not recommend this device if you need it for video production;

Got this as a disk cache for Adobe After Effects CS6 to speed up renders. So far so good. After it was installed the system didn't immediately show it as a usable drive. I have Win7 64 bit. I had to use the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\computer managment to create a new drive letter. After that everything was great.

I gave it an okay due to the one we bought was bad and had to return it. However the other one we got works great, just the drive is not really big enough for our pc. I need to get a bigger drive.

Quick, silent, low energy and heat. Only issue I have with it is that it came completely unformatted/partioned and I've still got some issues with booting from it as a stand alone drive. A setup disk would have been handy.

product arrived exactly on schedule. though the supplied cd was nigh on needless and useless, the recommended migration software was very easy to download and install. migration from the incumbent hard drive was a breeze, and my windows experience index has grown from 5.9 to 7.8... my intel core i7 3930k is now the slowest part of the system...the package came with all that was needed for the installation, cables, bracket, screws and all... quite nice in all... kudos to intel...

This was my second Intel 520 series SSD purchase. I bought a 180gb for my Lenovo laptop a few months back, and it has been scary-fast. For my quad-core / Gigabyte motherboard box I thought to spend a few bucks less and try a Co.-based brand's top offering. A week and countless hours of tuning, weirdness and Win7 blue screens later, I returned it (by the way, great return policy, Amazon, even a nice person on the phone at 2:10am (grin)). I spent the extra $25 for a 250gb 520 series. My second Intel 520 SSD has worked perfectly! It appears, based on my admittedly very small sample size and some reading of others' experiences, that Intel is doing something right in their controller tuning and quality control. Buying an SSD that "works" on your particular set of hardware seems to be a minefield for some folks, so having a good return policy like Amazons was for me is essential. 500+kb read *and* write on my board... whoa.

Of course I purchased this drive solely because of the Intel brand name and wasn't disappointed. I installed in my LATE2011 MacBook Pro 15" to test and experienced sustained read/write speeds of 125MB/s and 250MB/s which is about the average for SATA II. I then installed in sister's MID 2012 MacBook Pro 13", who is a power user, and she hasn't experienced any hiccups yet. Look forward to purchasing more Intel from now on.

I purchased this SSD to upgrade my MSI GT70 laptop. It is smokin' fast and has the Intel 5 year warranty to boot. I have move it around several times and had no problems.
