It all started with there being next to no documentation.

It worked fine for a few days and now I am in software heck with "support" only open on weekdays and problems "communicating with the software error -14" . This is like a 1980's error message and there is nothing on the website to help you. There is next to Zippo for documentation. I have tried all manner of things (resetting computer, scanner, uninstalling and reinstalling software, temporarily turning off antivirus) and keep getting the communication error. Many hours of wasted time.

I tried a second computer and I am getting "Could not perform the recognition process"

I guess I will find out how their support works on Monday. This feels like the beta of a new product or maybe I just got a bad one.

UPDATE: Their telephone support was very nice but after over an hour with the "tier 1" support, they passed me onto "tier 2" support. It turns out there is a software bug that messes up a DLL file. The Tier 2 support person appears to have fixed the problem by updating the DLL file. There is apparently a software update coming that will fix this problem.

Its too bad the error code and the issue has not propagated down to their Tier 1 support so I didn't have to mess around for another 1+ hours.

UPDATE #2 - They have released the fix for the bug in the software and it seems to work. I'm enjoying how fast it can scan through some old paperback manuals that I am scanning so I can save space and be able to find things electronically. I think they could do a much better job with the software and user interface and the documentation is almost non-existent. Overall, I am becoming more pleased with the product as the main thing is the speed of scanning.

I was hesistant after reading reviews about purchasing the iX1500, but I am glad I did. I have not encountered any of the noted flaws with feeding jams or software other users have thus far. I am fairly IT savvy and expect this system to perform well. I am using this for the home office on a Windows 10 PC and the software loaded and updated without issue. Wireless connections and setup was straight forward as it gets. I set up OCR when scanning documents and could find them via keyword searches without issues. I do enjoy that the software works well and doesn't have a ton of deep menus. The online user manual could use an update since it is broken across many individual pages instead being available as a single webpage.

One thing I did not expect was how small it packs up when you fold over the feeding tray which closes it up into a bread loaf sized piece. Scanning on both sides at 600 dpi takes only about 3 seconds for an 8"x11" document which seems nice to me. I thought about the price tag for a bit wondering why it is over $400 given the hardware isn't ridiculously high-end and doesn't have bluetooth speakers or make sandwiches. I figure the software quality and the R&D is where much of the cost goes because without the streamlined software and filing, scanners are just not going to be efficient in helping record and organize files. The software is solid, the scan filing, OCR'ing, and cloud uploads are all great for simply getting paper into cloud storage. If the house burnt down I would buy this again.

*Update 5/10/20 - So after a year of use I continue to be pleased with the iX1500. Motors still work, rollers are smooth, feeds are smooth, and there is an incremental software update about every 2-3 months. The OCR and indexing is nice...example; ease of searching up older vision exams papers and I could track the slow progression to more powerful eyeglasses prescriptions. Using this scanner and the Adobe Scan app for my phone has resulted in 80% of my documents being cloud based.

Have been using a Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 at home with a Mac for 10 years. Would have used it for another 10, but the MacOS Catalina upgrade isn't compatible with the drivers and Fujitsu says they won't be updating them. Kind of frustrating, but hard to complain about getting 10 years of solid service out of a product like that.

With all the negative reviews of this scanner from people who felt like they had downgraded from the ix500, I almost didn't buy it. In fact, I bought an Epson DS-780N first but ended up returning it because I thought the software was awful, at least for the way I use it (way too many steps to do a simple scan).

But I'm finding that I like the IX1500 a lot. I preferred the physical configuration of the S1500 (the output tray on the IX1500 feels cheap and doesn't open smoothly), but at least for me that's minor and at most a secondary consideration.

I like the LED screen, and how easy it is to customize the buttons. Most of the time I just want to scan what's in the feeder, dump it to a default directory as an OCR'd PDF, and open it in Preview which makes it easy to rename, move, and edit if I need to. That was super easy to configure, and also create a couple other commonly-used variants.

Setup was easy and straightforward, I set it up via Wifi.

I would have been happy to use the S1500 for 10 more years, nothing about the IX1500 is good enough that I'd have thrown out the S1500 and spent another $400 if I didn't need to. But given that wasn't an option, at least I do feel that what I got is a little better than what I had.

Update 2: The ScanSnap lost connection to my laptop, error message "The device is not responding. Check if this ScanSnap is selected by the device currently in use" I can only get it to work again by connecting the USB cable. Definitely not how I want to use it. Please fix Fujitsu

Update: it was working fine for months but some weird error happened today, it couldn't detect the computer - error message "the device is not responding. Check if this ScanSnap is selected by the device currently in used" and I had to reset the scanner and reinstalled the ScanSnap home on my computer for it to see the scanner again and get it working. I'm just glad all the scanned files didn't get deleted. So because of the weird bug and frustration to fix it I give it 1 star.

It scan documents to your computer. So far it works just fine, got two computer setup to receive the scans through Wifi. It can also scan to Google Drive and other clouds services -> setting that up was confusing, you can't set it up on the machine, you have to open the ScanSnap Home software -> go to Scan Settings -> click on cloud and set up your account.

You also need to go to their website to download the software -> instruction provided from the scanner mini-screen.

There are settings that can only be changed from the software and there are settings that can only be changed from the Scanner touch screen -> for example - if you want to load multiple load of documents and want them saved in one single pdf file. You have to changed it on the scanner touch screen -> you click the page icon and pick one with multiple page -> when that is done once one batch is done it asks you to add more pages until you are done you click finish. However if you use the software -> Feed Mode Settings -> Continuous Scan (which is what you are doing) it won't work.

I am amazed at the size of this powerful scanner. The color was a soft white similar to the “soft white” lightbulbs on the market today. Very pleasing to the eye and blends in with my HP printer and Label maker since they are all the same color.
The initial set up was very easy considering I am not a Techie. I did not have any issues connecting to my network. The screen on the front very vibrant and easy to read. The prompts talked me through everything. The cost is very reasonable considering all of its functions, and capabilities.
Nowadays document scanners are the modern-day electronic answer to filing cabinets. I am using the scanner for both my business and personal use since it have the ability to set up multiple users.
The scanning speed was very fast and quiet. Since my purchase I have scanned everything from sales brochures, photos, receipts and multiple size papers.
Love that it scans 30 pages per minute. The auto sheet feed perfectly handles multiple size documents at one time. I mixed 8 ½ X 11, 4 X 6, receipts and a business card in the trays and everything came out in one file. It even duplexed the ones with information on the back page.
Another feature I like is the phone interface software you can download. I have an IPhone so I downloaded the iOS software from the App Store which allowed me to scan receipts and documents from my phone. In under a minute they are downloaded to my DropBox (also can send to One Drive, Google and most cloud base storage software.) account in a specific directory I set up to accept these scans. I was amazed at how fast it worked.
I previously had a Brother ADS 2000 but had multiple problems getting it to work with my updated computer software. Ended up having to scan all my documents to a USB drive, then copy them over to my computer where I then had to rename them. Very long drawn out process.
I highly recommend this scanner for both personal and business usage.

BLUF--For everyone worried that the ix1500 would be a completely disappointing upgrade to the ix500, this is a worthy replacement. I worked with the ix500 for years at work and when it came time for me to buy one for home, the ix1500 was my only realistic option due to pricing and availability. I was genuinely concerned that I was purchasing a lesser product based on the reviews I read on Amazon. Not the case. This is just as simple and easy to use and the new interface accommodates options for immediate storage in the cloud where you can access it from your laptop, desktop, and mobile device. Too easy. Another concern was whether the wi-fi connection would prove too troublesome to use with slow upload or access. Not an issue. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I just bought the ix1500 as an upgrade to my old s1500M. I was considering the ix500 but saw the brand new ix1500. Unfortunately, after hours of searching around (the ix1500 has no manual and there is little information online) I discovered a big difference between the ix500 and the ix1500 is that the ix1500 software can't send contact details from a business card directly to Outlook or Apple Contacts. The ix500 can use either the old ScanSnap software (Manager, CardMinder, etc.) or the new ScanSnap Home software. The ix1500 can only use ScanSnap Home. While CardMinder could send contact information directly to your Outlook/Contacts address book, ScanSnap Home does not have this capability. The ScanSnap customer service rep I spoke to told me that if scanning business cards into my address books is important, I should probably return my ix1500 and get the ix500. This seems like a HUGE FAIL on the part of Fujitsu in designing ScanSnap Home. I have wasted many hours in setup and trying to solve this.

I bought my first scansnap S1500 back in 2012 and an ix500 in 2018. both are still being used in my office and working great. Needed another scanner for new employee, so got this one. Absolute piece of junk. the scan to menu is gone unless you create a profile, and even then half the features are gone. Read another person's review talking about how the engineers took away all the good features of the older models and I second that. Over half the time I hit scan I get a message saying it is unresponsive and I have to hit the scan button 4 to 5 times before it will scan. Then if it does scan, half the time after I save the document I get an error message saying it has failed to scan. Extremely disappointed and have returned the item and will be purchasing a scanner from a different company

I just spent 3 hours trying to set up the cloud service for dropbox. No success. Never in my digital life (been on a Mac since 1992) have I seen such convoluted, useless help file. I usually don't need a help file, i always figure it out without help. I can't even start to explain, how twisted and full of contradictions the 'manual' is. the scanner itself is very fast and works well, but if you want to set up your own file structure in the cloud, you are at a loss. Other reviewers went through the same experience. Trust us, if you don't want to waste precious time, run away from this machine as fast and far as possible. for many years I used the S1300 Scansnap, and setting it up was a breeze. I simply set up a file in my dropbox folder and it would upload. Not so with this one, it does not let you change the destination folder - you have to go through a lengthy set up with the fuji website first and in the end, it just doesn't work, there has been a big yellow exclamation mark calling out at me for hours now - I am throwing the towel, this thing is going back, simply because of the deranged software.

5/4/19 I have just downgraded this review from two stars to one star. And this was only an hour after I wrote the review. I got another Error Code: -14 when attempting to scan again. This is the same error code that caused Fujitsu to reload my SW interface yesterday. A scanner that costs $400-$500 should not be doing this.

THE SCANNER ITSELF IS FANTASTIC. .... BUT ...... The SOFTWARE INTERFACE and it's problems make it just UNACCEPTABLE. How a company that makes great scanners can let a piece of garbage like this out into the marketplace is beyond me. There are so many problems with it.
For example:
1) Interface locks up all the time (especially when "recognizing"). This causes me to close the program, disconnect the scanner and start over.
2) My task manager shows that the image processing never shuts down and hogs my PC resources. (I have to open task manager and end the process for all of the processing tasks before it'll work again).
3) When I scan in "verify mode", I can change the name of an image and save it. However, the software then changes it back to the original scanned name, thereby forcing me rename the file a second time.
Conclusion:
I have read a number of reviews where people are complaining about the software interface where they said it was better on the previous model of this scanner. These models are pretty hard to buy now though.
My review would have been 4.5-5.0 stars IF the software was up to par ... but it just isn't.
So I gave it three stars for ease of use, and only two stars overall, because it is so much harder to use with all of these unnecessary problems. I have wasted hours on this and shouldn't have to.
Tech support was quite helpful. They reloaded the software yesterday (5/3/2019) and the problems went away for about a hour! Now I'm having the same issues again.
Disappointed. Hope they upgrade the SW soon.

I had an iX500 and an S1500 and they were very fast and reliable. So when my S1500 died rather than paying for the "renewables," I thought I would just buy the newest model. BIG MISTAKE. I have struggled with it for nearly three weeks to get it to run right. I have installed and reinstalled the software. Tired different ports. It runs for a while and then I get error messages like my computer does not recognize the devise or there was an error in recognizing the document and it hangs up. The scanner is very fast, but the software takes forever to process the images. It wants to OCR everything and with big files it not only takes a long time, but it hangs up. The scan software is clunky and not very intuitive. If you want to just quickly scan documents to PDF and save them somewhere, this isn't the machine for you. It has to process everything and save a copy in the software and that not only takes time but it hangs up every 6th or 7th scan and you have to restart the machine to get it going again until it hangs again. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I am going to have to leave Fujitsu after 10 years but I can't struggle with this machine anymore.

UPDATE 6/29/2020. Went from 1-star to 5-star because it the old Scansnap Manager software now works with this unit and it's great as ever before. Kind of makes the touchscreen superfluous but at least it's working as well as my old ix500 which was a 5-star product. I've tried other brands (Epson, Ambir) and their software does not match up.

ORIGINAL REVIEW WHICH NO LONGER APPLIES:
I've used the older IX500 that's no longer manufactured and read some of the negative reviews of this newer IX1500 based on the software. I'm very good at learning software and figured how bad could it be. Maybe people just don't like change. Well I will tell you in this case it's a real move backwards in usability. The new capture utility is so walled in and full of bloat that it's really hard to use a workflow outside of the software without a bunch of extra clicking and such. With the IX500 you scan and it pops a window. From that window you simply name the file, select the folder and DONE. With the new software it's such a chore getting it to a folder of your choice. I can't stand it. For now I'll have to buy used IX500s or else start looking around for another brand. As a software engineer, it absolutely burns me when I see a decent design get rewritten into something supposedly fancier but much less user friendly and full of bloat.

We have 5 IX500's in our office, used the big $3,000+ scanners way in the past. Reading about this new IX1500 for some time and seeing the negative reviews, I stuck with and still bought the IX500 when i needed replacement. Til the IX500 increased in price to $700. Then I thought I will give IX1500 a try. My fears were unfounded. It is superior to IX500. There is no extra step (there is an extra step if you choose that extra step of confirming the scan). The menu is superior to the IX500, you can point to the different types of scans, instead of going through the menu of the IX500. Definitely recommended.

We have had this over a month now and have scanned in thousands of documents. I am so happy to be decluttering my life and digitizing. So many papers are being thrown right into the recycling bin. Resources I have collected over the years such as Sunday School ideas, Boy Scout materials, home daycare, recipes, taxes, product manuals, etc. will be gone and shelf space freed up! Whooo hooo! It works quick and efficiently. Sometimes I am annoyed with it requesting to be cleaned, but realize this is necessary maintenance to keep the product working well for a long time. We keep a lens cloth nearby. The OCR to rename the file is wonky, but can be turned off. I tested a photo and was satisfied with the size and quality. I pulled the image into Photoshop because I am aware that to evaluate one must consider both the dimensions and the ppi as they work together. It is adequate for printing a 5 x 7 and possibly 8 x 10. I have no need for the images to be larger. If I do, I can use another method, but the photos I am scanning are voluminous from old albums and the originals would not be of a quality to support a larger size regardless. Mostly likely they will never be printed again anyway. Set up from the laptop was fairly easy once I poked around and learned the software. I have it set up to put certain types of documents into different folders. I love being able to scan in documents right away as they come in, toss them into the recycle, and avoid the need to file. I am so weary of putting papers in a "pile to file," then filing them, only to a year or more later go through to purge them. Yes, I have to rename and organize them right away on my laptop, but that is a small effort enough for me to say, "good-bye paper pushing!"
EDIT: I compared two scans of the same image as in the attached photo (compared multiple ones) and this scanner makes all of the photos a red tint and makes them more saturated. I zoomed in and the pixelation is the same. The size is the same. Black and whites are very similar. Keeping in mind this scanner is not marketed for photos, I will not reduce my star rating.

And it no longer seems able to connect through wifi to my computer (despite being able to previously). I've put an email into Fujitsu CS so I'll report back after I hear from them. ...But to be quite honest, I'm not expecting "Amazon Customer Service" from Fujitsu after reading many reviews about their "lax" service. 2019-01-17 10:03 PM MST

The good thing I can say about this newest ScanSnap is that it is much faster than my last. I use it for archiving old writings, magazines, mementos. Everything else about it is INFURIATING. In particular, it has a lot of automation to "help," but most of the time, at least for me, it fails. And, there's no way (that I have found) to turn off the automation that's not working, so I'm stuck doing more work in Adobe Acrobat to correct for things it "fixed."

Examples:
- On old models, if you put the pages in the right way they scanned the right way. Now it "auto" determines the top of the scan, which is almost always upside down for handwriting. This would be a great feature to be able to turn off, but the interface doesn't have anything in settings to allow you to.
- Even if you're working on a Continuous Scan of PDF document, if it comes across a page shaped like a receipt, it will decide to scan that as a receipt and not assume you meant to scan it with the document you were scanning. It will also cut the document in half, so everything before the receipt is in one PDF and everything after is in another. I was scanning a large doc that had one odd-shaped insert and now I have 2 PDFs and a JPG. Again, I'm sure this is a great feature for some people, but if you can't disable it from the interface, it's not a feature, it's stupid.
- It does not default to searchable PDFs or provide an easy place to enable searchability. I never had this problem with previous documents so now I have to figure out how to go back through the 2000 pages I have scanned with this thing to find out how to turn that on or what to do. Again, this could be a simple icon to click.

Overall this is a DESIGN FAIL. I used to have a lot of functionality that I could turn on and off at will and assign to different profiles. Now I just have a couple icons on an onboard screen. They made it great for people who have limited needs and aren't used to the customizing abilities of previous interfaces. I thought I was paying for another great experience from the ScanSnap line. Instead I received a shiny disappointment.

We have used Fujitsu scanners exclusively for over 8 years. We currently have 15 Scansnap Model: iX500 scanners. They are true workhorses and scan really fast with the right settings. Well, this new model came out and we bought one to try. All I can is that this scanner is a total disappointment. It is super slow. In our business we scan hundreds of pages a day and speed is of the essence. This new scanner and application just sit there thinking for a while before we can save the scan. I've tried optimizing the setting but nothing has helped. Fujitsu has really dropped the ball here. There is no way it can compete with the previous model. We even have an old Scansnap S500 from 2007 that scans faster than this new one. So sad. We'll have to look for another alternative once our old scanners start dying.

The only reason I returned the ScanSnap ix500 that I purchased, which worked beautifully, was that it wasn't compatible with 5G, so it required hard wiring my laptop to ScanSnap every time I used it. I returned it and "upgraded" to ScanSnap ix1500. Unfortunately, it's inferior to ScanSnap ix500. The ix1500 is less efficient (with extra steps and unnecessary features) than the ix500. Also, the ix1500 is lousy for scanning photos, because they always come out way too light. It's frustrating that Fujitsu lost the beautifully simplistic functionality, efficiency, and high-quality scans of the ix500 when it designed the ix1500.

I basically went paperless about 8 years ago sith the Scansnap S1500M. With Catalina, I had to upgrade. I read the horror stories about this new model, and how it would not save documents directly to the cloud very well. But then it occurred to me that in my workflow, I don't want to go straight to the cloud. I want to name it, upload to evernote, and then run it through Hazel to put it in the right folder. This model does that very well. The touch screen on the front makes it easy to switch from receipts to regular multipage documents and even to documents that contain pages of unequal sizes that you have to put through a few at a time. (This one requires you to tweak some settings.) It is much faster than the S1500M. It rarely jams.

The negatives: the installation process appears to be written by a non-native speaker of English. The instructions took me a long time to figure out. For example, do you want to connect through a wireless access point? Or directly to your computer? Well, I want to connect through my wireless Lan directly to my computer. So which is it? After searching google for a half hour, it turns out that I should select wireless access point. You have to make this decision on the spot. You cannot defer it until later.

Another caveat: The new software works fine and will do what the prior software did. But the defaults are different. So you have to play with them until it behaves the way you need.

One more thing: The ScanSnap Home software will try to be the manager of your documents. In a sense, this is a good thing because you can edit the document right there and give it a name and view the metadata. (You can see the text recognition, for example.)
But if you use another app in your workflow like Adobe acrobat or PDF Expert, then when you finish using the app, the ScanSnap gets confused and will not scan until you shut down ScanSnap Home and restart it. Fortunately, you can turn off the feature where ScanSnap Home manages your documents, and then you don't have to worry about the scanning errors.

So, you will go through some pain in the initial set-up. But once you have it tamed, it is a great experience.

Bought this to replace my Fujitsu S1500 which is still working, but is definitely tiring after 8 years of heavy use. I also considered the iX500 but felt that it made more sense to go for the newer technology the iX1500 offered. So far I have grave concerns. The touch screen is pretty. It is faster, smoother, and quieter and has maintenance warnings, but there are issues. Firstly the new Fujitsu ScanSnap Home software does not want to make friends with my 3rd party software Document Management System. With the old ScanSnap Manager this was a non-issue and everything worked perfectly right out of the box. I'm going to give it a few more days between Fujitsu and software company's support departments to resolve these issues. My fear is I am going to have to figuratively boot the iX1500 to the curb and get the older tech iX500 which still uses ScanSnap Manager. Last thought, the touchscreen and firmware seem to be slow to react to input, another concern. I will get some more scans under my belt with a new computer this week and report back.

Continued later........

Updating my review of a few weeks ago. I still haven’t done any mass scanning yet, but after the long Christmas weekend tech support shutdowns I was able to get Fujitsu on the phone and explain all my problems. It turned out that all it was was setting up some of the configuration options properly in ScanSnap Hime. The new software is different and everything is there but it’s just in different places than in the old software. So they walked me through a lot of unintuitive configuring and now it’s working pretty well with my document management system. Fujitsu tech-support admitted this software still has a bit of a way to go, but hopefully improvements will be on the way as this product only been out a couple months. Considered acceptable to buy at this point and I’ve upgraded it to four stars.

First, be aware that Amazon is doing a disservice by grouping reviews for the ix500 with the new ix1500.
The ix500 has been discontinued and the new ix1500 is a much different machine. I understand that people loved the ix500, as did we, but don't be daunted by some of reviews.
That said, we recently purchased an ix1500 for our legal office, and so far it works just fine, and the paralegal who uses it is happy. She had been using a ix500, but likes the new one more.
Installation was fast and error free.
In setting it up, I worked with Fujitsu tech support, which is consistently excellent, to create a user profile so it works exactly as the paralegal wants. The key is to set up user profiles.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC SOFTWARE BUNDLED WITH THIS PRODUCT. Every time after scanning you are forcibly prompted to select file destination that you've already specified prior in the settings. There is no way to disable this popup after EVERY. SINGLE. SCAN. The "Uncheck Quick Menu" option is gone from the NEWER VERSION (WTF?), so you are forced to make dozens of clicks after every scan. There are no Youtube tutorials for the latest ScanSnap software or how to even disable it. All these tutorials are based on older versions that DO NOT work with the latest software. Abosolute SH*T. Would give this product a negative thousand stars and dislikes if I could. Paid over $500 for this and got a wasteful time-consuming product that should SUPPOSEDLY get my scans done in a matter of minutes but takes DAYS to instead.

This scanner is incredibly good. The hardware and scanning software are excellent. I previously had installed software for a Fujitsu S1100 scanner that has worked flawlessly for years. But I wanted to put a scanner on our home network that could be shared by multiple machines. I decided to stick with Fujitsu based on that experience, even though the closest competitor was less expensive. People who bought the competitor's machine indicated that scanning, renaming and moving scanned documents was awkward. I am so glad that I bought the Fujitsu ScanSnap ix1500. It is so easy - just open the cover, and press "Scan". It automatically scans to a folder that I selected during setup. But even better - it names the file according to the content of the document. I have used this scanner quite a bit, and it is extremely fast and accurate. I couldn't ask for anything more.

My S1500M lived a great life and still lives on with someone who bought it from me on eBay. I was reluctant, well more like po'd, that I had to fish out money to replace my S1500M because of the MAC OS moving to 64 bit OS. That said I am VERY pleased with the IX1500! It works as well and is as dependable as my legacy machine but does a whole lot more. I especially like the Profiles feature. On the machine's display, I have four different colored-coded sets of similar profiles but each set is for a different user. Wife needs to scan to email, the daughter needs to scan to her Mac, I need to scan to DevonThink or to a small receipts folder... easy! I don't use the Cloud option since I use DevonThink instead but it looks nice as well. I did have a small issue setting up the profiles but Scansnap support helped me through it. So it's OK to put up your crying towel after you bid farewell to your S1500M, you have an excellent machine to take its place!

I have 3 Fujitsu fi-7160 series scanners. Fujitsu also makes ScanSnap. I originally bought the fi series because I wanted TWAIN capability. But the fi-series are REALLY expensive (around $800-$900). I needed another scanner for my business and even though the fi series are amazing work-horses, I was hoping for something less expensive.

After reading reviews and getting recommendations, I bought the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 (even though I had heard it wasn't as good or as intuitive as its predecessaro - the iX500...but strangely enough the new iX1500 was cheaper than the iX500 and I figured maybe the people that wrote bad reviews for the iX1500 just didn't know how to read instructions or how to set it up). Anyway, I got the iX1500 and was SO EXCITED to put it to work and try it out.

After 2 days trying to make it work and testing it out, I ended up returning it. Compared to the Fujitsu fi-series (fujitsu also makes the Scansnap), the Scansnap is SO SLOW and clumsy. It scans slower. It saves slower. The associated software also requires SO many clicks and button pushes to do the same thing that would only take 1 click with my fi-series. I am not exaggerating when I say it made me frustrated beyond belief.

I know for personal use, I probably wouldn't splurge on the extra $400 to get the fi-series, BUT my 3 other Fujitsu fi-series scanners have been going strong for the last 4 years, never had a single problem, they're lightening fast, and they are *workhorses* (I scan medical documents for my office....and I need to scan treatment contracts while a patient is waiting so it needs to be FAST).

I am so disappointed with the Fujitsu Scansnap series. I have returned my Fujitsu Scansnap iX1500 and will be buying another Fujitsu fi-7160 scanner.

I absolutely dislike the software with this scanner. Compared to the ix 500, the device is much slower and the software has been dumbed down and for those of us with a certain way of processing our documents, this has very inflexible software that requires additional steps from what we were used to with the ix500. WE purchased this ix 1500 so that we could network it and move the ix 500 to another location. I would rather buy an ix500 for each desk than have to deal with the ix1500.

I've been using ScanSnap products since 2009 and I upgrade about every three years. This model is a giant regression from the ix500.

— Fujitsu decided not to write a 64-bit version of their software to, so none of the older models work with Catalina/Big Sur, etc. Their solution was to push their cloud software, or buy new hardware (e.g., this one).

— They try to manipulate users to use this product via their 'cloud'. If you choose the 'home' (aka, the "offline" version), you are bombarded with dark design pop-ups to get you to go to the cloud. No one wants to upload their scans to the cloud, they just want to scan them locally.

— If you try to use this with third-party scan software, e.g., ExactScan Pro (which is the best software to use, it's faster, OCR is instant and offers many other features), that software will not work if you have the ScanSnap software installed. If you uninstall the ScanSnap software, the hardware display changes to this alert dialogue that prompts you to download their bad software, and no buttons work (ExactScan still works, but it's annoying that you cannot use the screen to scan).

— The screen is now an illuminated touchscreen that feels cheap. I miss the hardware buttons.

Overall, it's a giant step back and I have no idea why Fujitsu did this to one of their best products. This is why the older ix500 unit is selling for 50% more now (~$600 as of July 2020) — everyone wants it instead.

Do not buy this scanner! The best way to go now-a-days is to find a scanner that is compatible like ExactScan Pro or VueScan that scans faster. There are many scanners now that are faster and about half the price of this that will work perfectly with third party. If Fujitsu reverses the trend to push people into their bad cloud software and allows their devices to freely be used with third-party software, I will update my review.

Easy to use out of the box but I have a few quibbles:

1. If opting for WiFi instead of USB, it is finicky and need to connect computer to the unit before every scanning session. USB is more automatic. Had to get rid of the USB connection because I already have the SV600 and only one Scansnap is allowed to be connected via USB at single time per PC.

2. Big rollers lead to unsightly tracks on the scan when scanning cheaply inked books or newspapers. I have kept an older model with smaller rollers to scan these materials.

3. Streaking warning appears even after cleaning the glass.

4. No longer bundled with Adobe PDF Standard.

The actual scanner is what you expect from Scansnap. Fast, reliable scans with good quality. Unfortunately, they force you to use the new Scansnap Home which is worse than useless. You cannot avoid it. With the old software you could have it scan directly to another program but Home is still in the mix and I get errors every time saying that the PDF is being used by another program (Home). You used to be able to scan to print (to send to onenote or another program) but you can't do that anymore.

Even if you use the Home software, it's half baked because you can't use it to organize documents. You can't easily move to other folders and if you use explorer, it won't recognize that any of the files have been moved but just give you an error that the file can't be found. You can't easily print from the program (you have to open up another program to print from). I understand that new software can be buggy, but forcing you to use the software (you can't use the old ix500 software, even though if you have the ix 500 you can use either).

Lastly, the scan cloud is another bust. You would think that you could avoid all the above problems and scan directly to the cloud without a computer. Wrong! Every time I try it says I need to re login, which means starting.... Scansnap Home and back to the problems listed above.

We bought this specifically so that we could digitize (scan) all of our tax paperwork which had a mountain of papers, receipts, etc. to scan for quite a number of years of taxes. We were previously trying to get this done with our Epson flatbed scanner, but it was taking FOREVER!

The Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 is making quick work of this task and we are getting a whole year's worth of taxes scanned in an hour or two, instead of weeks and weeks. This scanner is SO FAST! I still can't believe it scans bother sides of the item being scanned. It is truly amazing how well it works. There is a small learning curve, but not bad at all.

It is very well designed and is a quality made unit. It is also VERY versatile as is out of the box, but you can also change the settings for how it scans things and saves them if you wish. My only wish is that I had bought this scanner a LOT sooner!

I've scanned *hundreds of thousands* documents and pictures since my first scanner in 1992 which cost $1200 back then. I'm intimately familiar with their features and shortcomings.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap ix1500 is a HUGE disappointment, not just in the quality of the scans, but the software and ability to fine tune settings.

The software is a disaster, as is the online documentation. There is no manual included, only a thin pamphlet with brief setup instructions.

The software is a space hog, within the first hour my disk went from 21GB of free space to ~30MB of free space followed by relentless errors about disk space being low. Every language under the sun is installed by default, instead of prompting for the language you prefer and only installing that. The software is scattered across multiple folders in obscure places that made it difficult to find what was using up all my disk space.

The settings are another disaster, the main settings page/tab contains *some* settings, but others are nested in unintuitive places and are only visible after clicking an obscure checkbox. The language in some of the menus appears to be written by non-native English speakers, for example when choosing image quality, instead of choosing resolution like 200,300,400,600 dpi, you get to guess what "Good, Better, Best, Advanced" means.
Which is better, Best or Advanced?

When I finished installing the software and tried my first scan, I repeatedly got something like "An error occurred while processing the images. Code: -100", also "Scansnap Image Monitor has stopped working". If I googled the error I found nothing related to the scanner. The online documentation made no mention of the error code or how to troubleshoot the problem. In the end, after a couple hours of shear frustration, it turned out Kaspersky was blocking it because it detected suspicious activity. I had to add it as a trusted app.

The disk space problem turned out to be an option to keep RAW scans (for 2 weeks), but again this option was difficult to locate. I expected the RAW scans to be stored in the same location as I specified for the scans to be stored, not some obscure folder on my C: drive hogging up my space.

After fixing the Error 100 and making some scans, I found that color scans were badly faded and nearly unreadable. The bleed through from the back side of the page was bad too. There is a setting to reduce bleed through, but its not great. Another problem is scanned text, the lines for characters were thin and missing pieces, if you zoom in it's easier to see. There's setting to improve contrast, but its just a checkbox, its not adjustable. These scans were from clean first generation laser printed (text) and inkjet color, as well as printed color pages from magazines. I took those same pages and scanned them on my all-in-one printer/scanner/fax at 600dpi (which is what I'm assuming "Excellent" means) and the difference is obviously better.

The instructions to install the "snap-in" plastic document guide are unclear and its entirely possible it will get broken trying to install it or not get installed correctly.

PROS:

The pros are convenience to scan many documents with an automatic document feeder, and speed. Also, the unit is compact, doesn't need much desk space, and closes up when not being used. I was also able to configure it to scan directly to my NAS

I'm still on the fence about returning it, but lack of a better alternative in the same price range is a problem. I suspect the quality issues are due to the brightness of the LEDs used to illuminate the document. There are reasonable ways this could have been fixed and made adjustable, but were likely just disregarded.

I may get a chance to update this later with some examples of the scan quality.

I am writing this review because I am very pleased with this scanner. I have been using a portable Brother Scanner for 5 years and I am in the Mortgage Business. I have had so many fights with that stupid scanner. I finally took the leap and bought a real scanner that I didn't have to hand feed into the scanner. I literally walk away from my new scanner now and I don't have to worry that it will pull 5 pages through at once. I paid $400+ for this luxury! I love how the scanner has a page counter on the main screen so you can see how many pages are going through. I read a review on here and the guy said he worked in an IT department and was very happy with this scanner. I was sold on his comment. That is why I bought this scanner. I would highly recommend it. I Love the touch screen. All around I would recommend it to anyone!
