And, yet, I am giving this a 4 star review. Why? There are some maddening things where you can't do certain things with certain types of documents. For example, if you are defining a profile for a receipt you can choose to automatically name the document and can order the title before or after the date. But, if you are defining a profile for a document, you can't do that. The date must come before the title. You can't change the order. Why? No clue.
On the other hand, you can't choose to scan a receipt to a searchable PDF. The default is to scan receipts to jpeg. You can change that to default to PDF. Fine. But, you can't make it a searchable PDF! Well, you can but that is flawed also. If I scan to the cloud (say to Evernote) I can make it a searchable PDF but if I want to scan to my computer I can't. Well, I can lie to the Scansnap software and can tell it to treat all receipts like documents. Great! I can then scan to a searchable PDF. But, wait! When you do that for some odd reason the automatic naming for a receipt no longer works. It defaults to naming the receipt based upon the date scanned. Why? No clue.
There just seems to be a rigidity in what "they" think you will want to do. So, if you have a receipt they don't think you want it to be a searchable PDF. I like to scan everything to one file and make it all searchable. It is useless to me to have my "documents" be scanned searchable while the receipts aren't searchable. So, I have defaulted to just scanning everything to PDF (not searchable) and then I will mass OCR it all.
Just annoying to have the software assume I don't want to OCR my receipts or to assume that I only want to put the date first in the name of my documents. It would take so little to make this worthy of a 5 star review. But, alas, not yet.
Oh -- I read a review where someone commented it is harder to scan long receipts than it was with the iX500. What I did was create a long receipt profile so it is one step to choose that option and then for the next document I just choose my usual option (which is mostly scan to folder). Very easy.

It already sucked that I had to buy this damn thing when my previous scanner was working just fine. But, no, wasn't compatible anymore. Total cash grab.
I'm reading on Inet and Reddit, and people far more knowledgeable than me are struggling to get this to work.
I'm also reading reviews here and it's very obvious that many of the 5 star reviews are FAKE, FAKE, FAKE.
UPDATE: It gets better. Now, I'm unable to use the scanner because a window pops up that demands I register the product, which I've already done. They do that great thing where they ask you to sign in, but you can't, so you try to create an account, and it tells you that you already have an account. After screwing around with this $420 f-ing thing for 1/2 hour, I then went to their website and went through screen after screen until I could finally find someone to call. The person on the phone did not listen to what I said, kept asking me to repeat myself, told me that my computer should say things it clearly did not. Given my interactions with this person, I suspect it's another case of on the job training of someone with little to no knowledge at the customer's expense. She then wanted to get onto my computer, and I gave up. I'm going to have to find a different scanner. These people are SCUM.

I lost weeks of documents because of this change. After having a paper jam, I opened the iPhone app to see if the document had scanned correctly. While doing so I noticed the file had a note "send to a service is on hold." I logged into OneDrive to check my files and found that the scanner hadn't saved anything for weeks. Anything that had been scanned over two weeks before wasn't saved to OneDrive, and had been deleted by the ScanSnap Cloud service. Brilliant. Throwing an error on the scanner itself would have been better than hiding it in a generally unnecessary app.
The hardware is fine if kind of '90s retro-ugly. The scans are crisp and clean. It rarely jams. (If it did, I may have found the cloud issue earlier.) I disabled the wireless function and now just wait until I have a stack of paper big enough to justify pulling out my laptop.

This device is quite nice. It has adjustable features for the quality of the scan (I recommend the highest for signed documents) and you can scan in a stack of papers. I haven't used it yet, but it also has a special attachment for receipts, which I'm sure would be of use to a business, accountant, or people who just really need to keep track of that sort of thing. It also scans business cards. Basically I think I could stick just about anything paper with writing on it in this.
The software must be downloaded and installed separately from the website. The software is interesting because it reads legible printed text on what you scan in and uses portions of it to generate the filename of the scan. This feature can be disabled if you're paranoid (it's just machine-learning font/text recognition, similar stuff is built into a lot of PDF readers now), however it makes every document scanned rather easy to identify in your filesystem. THe software also categorizes whatever it scans and will attempt to identify things as business cards, receipts, or documents. When you choose the location you are saving scans to, it will automatically create a "business cards" and "receipts" folder within that directory.
The device has a touchscreen interface. It turns off or sleeps when you fold down the cover, which also protects the touchscreen. I have the white version. I like it.
