This refurbished product was delivered promptly and in like new condition. I had read reviews regarding the bright blue LEDs, but I was still surprised when I plugged it in at just how bright they are. My goal was to use the DIR-655 as a wireless N access point and gigabit Ethernet hub. There are instructions on the web for configuring this router as an access point, which worked well for me. I have a wireless G router (Linksys WRT54GL), which is located on the second floor of my house. Therefore, I have the DIR-655 configured for wireless N only. It resides in my basement and I have both a media center PC and Roku HD hooked up to the ethernet ports. My laptop computers with wireless N cards are consistently reporting speeds of 270 mps. I am very happy with the product and the installation.

Installation went easily, since I was familiar with D-Link system. Had some problems with the included USB printer set-up, to print to a printer on the router USB port from any computer on the system. Slow to change connection from one computer to another on the LAN.

I'm on my second unit after the first one had range issues. When I replaced my old G-band router I expected to get better (or at least the same) range with the DIR-655. Unfortunately that was not the case, as my range was effectively cut in half. I made several calls to D-Link and they stepped me through some configuration changes, which did not help. After 3 calls, they told me to return it to Amazon and request a new one. Amazon's exchange policy was quick and painless. With the new router I have the same range as my old G-band model, but the speed is quite a bit better. After setting up the new one, I noticed that it was hardware version A4 as opposed to the first one, which was A2. With all that being said, if you get an A2 model and have issues, you may need to exchange to get a later hardware revision. As far as the router goes, the setup was ridiculously easy and so far the performance and reliability have been fine. Plenty of features in the firmware to tweak. I haven't messed with the USB port yet, but other reviewers have some complaints on that one. Right now I'll call this a decent router for the price.

I consider myself to be relatively "techie". I have been in the IT field for close to 15 years, with a heavy concentration in network administration and design. That being said, I have always been (on the consumer level) a huge D-link fan. So to say I am disappointed in the purchase of my DIR-825, is a mild understatement.I don't have an extensive network at home, but the Wi-Fi items I do have I have almost completely hard wired because the latency with the dir825 is unacceptable. Here are some of the issues I have been having, but of course check the forums out there and you will see the trend for yourself.- Vonage VOIP calls almost inaudible (sounds like you're under water), even when the wireless/wired network is quiet.- The auto-channel select feature, which is enabled by default, is supposed to automatically choose the least congested Wi-Fi channel in your band. Not only does this feature not do advertises, it also randomly disconnects clients.- Horrible/Intermittent wireless connectivity on both bands, in fact I don't know that I have ever connected at full bandwidth on the N side.- UPNP connectivity with Windows Home Server terrible. Very spotty, at least 3 or 4 times a day the console shows red that UPNP is not available on the router. Until you configure port forwarding (which the router is supposed to do automatically) the issues continue.- Network connectivity drops/router reboots several times daily. If this is going to be used in a home business setup DO NOT PURCHASE.- Customer support/Technical support.....Don't get me started, my 80 year old, never used a computer before, still enjoys a riveting game of solitaire, grandmother is more tech savvy. In conclusion, go with the DIR-655, it is hands down the much better router.

For most of us, IT issues are too complicated. So when it comes to a router you want something that is fast and easy. This router fills that bill. In less than 10 minutes I had it up and running and with security. It works much better than my old router which kept hanging up or dropping connections. The great part of this router is that it has 8 ports - really 9 as the internet IN is a separate connection. This eliminated the need I had for a separate switch after I rewired my house during a remodel. In short well worth the money. I read a few reviews about it not lasting long, which I can't comment on but so far - works flawlessly.

Pros: Simultaneous Dual Band (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) connections; In-Depth Router menu; Slim side plugging transformer; SharePort feature; Price Cons: No printed manual (108 pages is not fun scrolling through Adobe); Still shipping with older (v1.00) buggy firmware; Poor signal transmittal both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz; Could have used 3 antennas rather than 2 to help improve the signal quality; LED's should be another color other than blue to reduce brightness and introduce a softer tone; WPS did not work for me; Slow SharePort speed (When using external HD) The Router did not take full advantage of Wireless N out-the-box. I had configured this router without the use of the supplied installation CD. I set up my network manually, albeit its Wizard, and I was connected quickly. I found myself connecting at 160Mbps and decided to look into it. I discovered that the Channel Width settings were set to 20Mhz, which wont allow for full 300Mbps N tranmittal. Changed to Auto 20/40 on both bands and now Im connecting at 300Mbps even with a fair connection on the 5Ghz band. Also do yourselves a favor once your connected, update the firmware to v1.01 as it fixes performance issues with N and also adds Shareport to the USB feature of the router allowing you to connect devices like Printer, MFP, Scanner and Storage Devices. Let me say that I am happy with the router at the moment and that some of the negative reviews others and I have mentioned are just a few shortcomings the router and the 5Ghz technology have. It is important to point out that the reason the 5Ghz band operates so poorly in contrast to the 2.4Ghz band is because its more susceptible of being absorbed by objects such as walls, doors and furniture. This ultimately, regardless of router, will hinder its performance by weakening its signal. Unfortunately, the 2.4Ghz signal quality was worse than my 6 year old G router it replaced. This router should either be performing on par or better on the 2.4Ghz band given the time it has been given to mature in this area. Fortunately it is only a slight set back for me which I could live with. For those with signal issues, try making parabolic reflectors for the antennas and point it in the direction where you need a stronger signal, you could see +3db boost in signal strength and its free and easy to make. Overall, Im happy with the performance of the router, but it definately has room for much improvement. Scouring the web gives mixed reactions on many other dual band routers and I decided on this model because it seems to have more favorable reviews regarding simultaneous 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz transmissions. I am also interested in using it with the D-Link DAP-1522 to create a Wireless N network bridge for my home entertainment center since I cannot hard wire ethernet there to connect to my devices LAN ports. This will allow me to use the 5Ghz band for streaming and high bandwidth tasks and the 2.4Ghz band for the rest wireless devices. Its important to note that the older DIR-655 is essential the same but without the 5Ghz band and 3 antennas. The DIR-855 is esentially the same as the DIR-825 but with an OLED display, 3 antennas and costs substantially more.

I own the Dir-825, hardware version A. When I got the item with firmware 1.01, connections dropped tremendously. I upgraded to firmware 1.11NA so as to solve the problem but this made it even worse. Connections dropped even more and other persons were complaining since they also shared the internet connection via the router. I always had to keep on physically powering off the router and plugging it back on. It got so bad that I installed an electrical switch on the plug that connected the router to an electrical outlet. So instead of pulling out the router's charger and then plugging it back on so as to reboot the router, I could now switch off the power supply. However it has been a week thus far and I have not had to reset the router. This is of course a world record for me since I had to reset this router every 2 days or so. I'm not sure if it's a fluke or what but I'll tell you what I did. I first saved the router settings to my hard drive. Then I upgraded the router's firmware to version 1.12NA. Then I upgraded to firmware version to 1.13NA right after.I then reloaded the router's settings that I saved on my hard drive. In the advanced tab of the router's webpage I went into the Qos settings. I unticked "Automatic Upload Speed" and I set the manual uplink speed to 360 kbps. My acutal uplink speed is 256 kbps but I just set the uplink a little higher to see what would be the effect. Thus far there has been no ill effect of doing such. In the end the router has not dropped connections or stopped being accessible via it's webpage.A great feature about this router is that when wireless clients log onto the router you can actually see who logs on as well as the percentage strength that the wireless device is receiving. Also the router respects the commands that you set in for port forwarding as well as port blocking. Port blocking is very essential for my use as well as the website blocking.

I've been a satisfied Linksys user since 2001, but I wanted an 8-port LAN solution. So I tried the D-link DIR-632, even though none of my wireless gear uses 802.11N.The networking reliability is inadequate. Without changing the networking settings on Linux,I installed this router in place of the Linksys box, and now get frequenty warnings from myLinux browser sessions on firefox:"The connection was reset - The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection."This disruption happens often enough that web browsing sessions are now very dysfunctional.Internet searches reveal that the DNS service built into the router can be problematic, thoughthe messages aren't specific to this firmware. With no new firmware to test, I have no options totry other firmware.I shouldn't have to put devices into networking lab to figure out what's wrong after I buy them.

I'm not sure if the router is the critical link, but my connection tested 50% faster than ever before at Internet Speed Test; 34 MPBS.Also, having 8 ports lets me connect all of my computers and the newer TVs that want an internet connection.

When I upgraded my 100Mbps wireless router to a gigabit router I was expecting to pay at least $80 to $100. I browsed Amazon long enough to find this D-Link DIR-655 gigabit router that was refurbished by D-Link and resold by Amazon for under $50 dollars. I was a little skeptical after I bought it as to whether or not it would work properly. I guess I should trust Amazon more because not only has it worked but it has exceeded my speed expectations and has worked perfectly fine for around 3 months now.Literally a steal!!!

Step 1 - Open the box.Step 2 - Go to the Dlink website and download and update to the latest version of the firmware for the router. This router is a great value for the price. It has all the current bells and whistles. 2.4 and 5.0 Mhz, simultaneous dual band, gigabyte ethernet ports, USB port to plug in any USB device to share. The user interface is really nice and has a lot of features to set your router up any way you want. This router has all the features of the more expensive "gaming routers". I'm using this router for everything; web surfing, gaming, voip phone, video streaming, media server with PS3, and file and print sharing. This router doesn't miss a beat. I have experienced no shuttering or slowdowns. Video streaming is smooth and steady, and voip calls are as clear as a landline. If you buy this router, download the latest firmware for the router on the dlink website. I struggled for two days trying to get the shared printer to work. But once I downloaded the latest firmware it worked immediately. There is a little button in the user interface that says "check for latest firmware version" or something like that. When you click it, it says you already have the latest version. That was the first thing I checked when I had problems with the printer. Two days of struggle later, I went to the dlink website and saw there was a much newer version of the firmware. So, don't believe the little status button in the user interface, go to the dlink website and look for yourself, download and update to the latest firmware. Most of the problems people reported in earlier reviews have been corrected with the latest version of the firmware. So save yourself a lot of time and hassle and update to the latest version. Even if you just opened a brand new package, it probably still has an old version of the firmware installed. So, go and update the firmware first thing. I think the orignial problems dlink had in late 2008-early 2009 was that they released this router before the firmware was ready for prime-time. Now the problems appear to be fixed in the newest version of the firmware.I love this router! So many features! A big upgrade from my three year old wireless G router. The only real negative I read on reviews from other websites concerning this router was the signal range. I live in a two story concrete house. The router is in the second floor in the far front of the house. I can go outside all the way to the back of my back yard and still get "excellent" signal with all bars showing. That's got to be a total distance of 200 feet through about four drywall walls and an exterior concrete wall. So the latest firmware might have solved that issue that was reported with the first versions that came out in late 2008.

I am a Linksys person and I teach a Wireless course using Linksys products. I have been using Linksys products since their 802.11b wired routers first became available. I recently purchased the WRT610N and after trying this D-Link, I am sorry I chose the Linksys WRT610N.As my first D-link product, I failed to realize D-link uses a 192.168.0.1 network address for its router. I am used to 192.168.1.1 on Linksys products.PROs:It is a Dual-Band wireless router, just like the WRT610N. It allows you to schedule wireless access. It has a great manual, which even tells you how to hook up one router to another for extending coverage. I was surprised to see this. I like being able to adjust power output of wireless radios. I love the idea of Guest wireless internet zones. It allows guests, such as friends, to get on your network without having access to local resources or giving out your normal SSID/Password.It clearly has more options than the Linksys WRT610N, which can be seemingly less user freindly and requires more knowledge of networking. The web configuration screens are similar to Linksys screens though. Anyone familiar with Linksys can find their way around. I did not try the setup CD. Instead I manually configured it using the web interface.I did not experience any of the instability issues I had with WRT610N. With a Lenovo T61, Apple TV, iPhone, two Macs, a PS3, and a PC connected to a Buffalo LinkStation Gaming Adapter, I needed to find the least common denominator wireless settings in order for all of these devices to connect and stay connected successfully. There were just too many disconnects, which necessitated the least common denominator approach. This approach meant I had to choose "Mixed BG" instead of "mixed (which includes n), had to set channel width to 20, and had to use Tkip WPA only. The D-link allowed me to use all three speed grades (B, G, and N) with WPA or WPA2 (becuase it autodetects the best encryption method available with client devices). I was also able to set the Channel Width to auto (40 or 20 depending on the clients).CONs:It only allows up to 63 alpha characters for the wireless passphrase/password. I prefer 64 hex character passwords. The menus are a bit more complex, which could be an issue for some.Only one person at a time can access a USB hard drive attached to the D-Link wireless router. Many can access the USB hard drive hanging off of the Linksys WRT610N.OVERALL:This is a great wireless router. I tested it as a drop-in replacement for my Linksys WRT610N (after changing the subnet to 192.168.1.x) and it performed admirably. If you are looking, I would consider this strongly before purchasing any other brand.DECEMBER 2009 UPDATE: When my company moved to a webpage-based VPN solution (we have to access a webpage and login which then opens up the tunnels), I discovered that the firmware version (1.01) I had caused issues. I upgraded to version 1.12NA and now I am experiencing daily wireless connectivity dropouts on the 2.4 ghz band. The only solution thus far is to restart the router. This new development has been detailed across the web. I am going to try some of the suggestions, such as any one or a combination of...disabling DNS Relay, disabling IPV6 on client computers, downgrading to 1.11.SECOND DECEMBER UPDATE: After disabling the DNS Relay, I have been running for over a week with no issues.

Bought a couple of these a few months ago for use on work computers that were Ethernet capable only...problem is that most hotels are wireless only. In bridge/adapter mode, these convert the wireless signal to Ethernet and problem was solved. Also use it to connect my satellite TV receiver to my wireless network for ordering movies vice running cables across the room...3 position switch makes it easy to switch modes and share an internet connection with others.

I have been operating with a wired router for a number of years and finally decided to go wireless so that my laptops and printer could could utilize their wireless capabilities on the home network. I liked the idea of the dual bands to make sure I could get the best connection/speeds with other devices as well (i-pods, PDAs, etc.). After operating for over a month, I am pleased with the speed and versatility this wireless router provides. Throughout the house (basement to top floor), I get excellent signal strength. In fact, I was able to walk into the field behind my house for 150 yards and manitain my connection, though it clearly weakened the further I went. However, set up was not an easy task. First, I tried to set up the router in place of my wired router. But it was not able to do so - a modem issue. My internet provider was prepapred to charge me for a compatible modem. Fortunately, the installation allowed for the wireless router to be hooked up THROUGH my wired router. That is where the installation got dicey. I had to call tech support. They were helpful, and walked me through the installation settings. But in the end, it did not work. They placed the blame on my wired router, which must have failed - though it had been working fine 15 minutes ago before we had made the configuration changes. Their help was over at that point. I had to struggle a while longer to get it up and running. But I was successful on my own at that point. My son then tried to setup the wireless printer the next day, and changed settings on the router such that I lost ALL access to the router. I had to reset completely to factory settings, and re-configure all over again. But having done it before, it was much easier. In fact, I set up the wireless printer in a snap on a separate tab on the setup page.At this point, everything works well. In the end, my connection speed is limited by my modem, not the router. I am able to operate my PC, a laptop, and a couple of ipod touches simultaneously with no compromise over the wired access speed. The only complaint is that once a day on average the router loses its connection. Sometimes Windows is able to restore the connection. Sometimes resetting the modem and/or routers fixes it. But typically we have to reboot the computer that setup the router. Not sure why this happens. But if you are operating a PC, you are used to re-booting for no apparent reason.

From the looks of the other views perhaps I'm one of the very few people having this problem but ever since I installed the router in place of my older wireless one I've had trouble connecting to my wireless regularly... sometimes I'll get great reception while other times it'll cut out completely from just a room away.My best guess is the band the router is running on is also being used for someone else's router in my building (Boston, large apartment building) so it's causing the signal to cut out but I never had this problem with my older router.Going to give it more time before I give it a final go/no-go decision but so far it hasn't been as reliable (although works perfectly fine when it is being reliable) as I had hoped.

This thing is great! My new laptop couldn't connect to my old router unless I recycled the power on the router. With the new router, my laptop connects instantly every time I power it up. The other computers, TV, and ipod have a solid wireless connection every time, too. I'm also getting faster connections. I was slamming Roadrunner for our slow internet access, but with the D-Link DIR-632, I'm getting speed test results like I've never seen before. I now have plenty of ports for all of my hardwired devices; several computers and two printers that are near the router. With eight ports, I can now add an NAS or two to our network. I'm so glad I found this router when I did!

My linksys befsr81 died on me. Using an internet speed test on the linksys I was never able to get more than a 6 mb/s download speed. This dlink router solved that. My isp provides me with 12 mb/s download and 2 mb/s upload. Using a speedtest on an ethernet connection through the router I managed to crank out 11.88 mb/s download and 1.91 mb/s upload speed. This is the same speed I would get if my computer was connected directly to the modem.I needed 8 ports because I am using 6 devices including; PS3, 3 computers (one is a server), sony bluray player, and a toshiba tv.I turned off the wireless because my house is wired with cat5 jacks.Worth every penny. Purchased this model after realizing I could barely find any routers with external antennae. I never owned a d-link before so I was worried but everything has been fantastic. Within the first few days I needed to restart the router twice to regain connection but there have been no issues since then. There is no noticeable signal loss anywhere in my house which is what I was looking for, and I know I won't have any lack of Ethernet ports for media servers or networked drives. The only downfall to this router seems to be the firmware which comes across as very over complicated, but it's possible that I just feel that way because I'm not used to it.
